Today (September 9), Vaganova Ballet Academy professor Ludmila Safronova would have been 90 years old. To mark the occasion, Vaganova Ballet Academy has shared some photos of Safronova from their archives.
Safronova studied under Agrippina Vaganova herself, graduating in 1947, and spent twenty years dancing with the Mikhailovsky Theatre.
Safronova started teaching classical dance at VBA in 1975, and was actively involved with the Academy till her death in 2018. Her students include Elena Pankova, Marina Chirikova, Irma Nioradzem Elena Vostrotina, Alina Somova, Marina Pavlova and Yulia Stepanova.

Hi:)I wanna ask why do you think Yulia Stepanova is a bad dancer?I personally think she has regressed a lot since she re-appear in Bolshoi(I couldn't believe she was promoted so quickly either)Her late Vaganova years to early Mariinsky years was really promising, especially in her graduation performance. Although she might not deserve her principal status, I don't think she's as bad as you think? (eg. as Lilac fairy and Nikiya) still I think she regressed a lot but I dont see others saying that.
I’m sorry I really think that she is the worst principal in all of Russia by a lot right now (even worse than Alina Somova). I have a feeling her goal was always to be a principal rather than a good dancer who loved the art. I agree that her late Vaganova years were really promising but she has regressed so much. My biggest problem with her is that it looks like she has no control over her limbs, which make all her movements look awkward and uncoordinated and her acting skills are non-existent.

Ask Responses: Vaganova
I noticed that all the best-known Vaganova-grad ballerinas were the students of M. Vasilieva, L. Kovaleva or T. Udalenkova. Would you agree that the dancers who studied with them are technically more proficient or is this a prejudice?
Bolshoi Primas & prominent Soloists
Evgenia Obraztsova - Vasilieva
Olga Smirnova - Kovaleva
Yulia Stepanova - Safronova
Zakharova - Evteyeva (Sulegina in Kiev)
Alena Kovaleva - Kasenkova
Xenia Zhiganshina - Vasilieva
Eleonora Sevenard (will prob be promoted soon) - Udalenkova
Mariinsky Primas & prominent Soloists
Diana Vishneva - Kovaleva
Ulyana Lopatkina - Dudinskaya
Ekaterina Kondaurova - Udalenkova
Yulia Makhalina - Vasilieva
Alina Somova - Safronova
Viktoria Tereshkina - Vasilieva
Olesya Novikova - Vasilieva
Maria Khoreva - Kovaleva
Renata Shakirova - Udalenkova
This is an interesting breakdown. The three teacher you mentioned have been at the academy for a very long time. At the moment they more or less represent the entire school and Vaganova style as a whole. They have graduated countless ballerinas - we are only aware of a small fraction of their graduates. I think these teachers are remarkable and each has a unique style which their students can be identifies by. This doesn’t mean that the other teachers’ graduate are somehow lacking; Vasilieva, Kovaleva and Udalenkova have also had the benefit of very long teaching careers. I think this is partly a generational thing. Other teachers working with graduating classes - Sitnikova, Zhelonkina, Kasenkova, etc. - are younger and have their careers ahead of them. They will shape future generations of dancers.

Do you know where is Vlad Belikov now? Did he leave VBA?
I don’t know, but people don’t vanish off the face of the internet when things are going well. Whatever’s going on, I hope he’s ok. I’ve always really like him.
-
I think Anastasia Smirnova is a graduate of this year, but I can’t find her name on your post titled “ class of 2019.”
I’m pretty sure Smirnova is Professor Kovaleva’s student, and Kovaleva’s class is graduating in 2020.
-
Besides Alexandra Khiteeva, who was the other girl who got red diploma?
@decadentwinnertoaddean: I have just seen the Vaganova graduation ceremony. Is it me or no one graduated with honors this year? Savalieva should not be sad: she is in the top three graduates!!
Red (honour) diplomas went to Alexandra Khiteeva and Valeria Sklotskaya.
-
I couldn’t help but notice Zoya Frolova was missing from the graduation ceremony. I would presume she is injured. Do you have any update about Zoya?
I have no idea where she is. Maybe back in Seoul? Tried to look her up recently but came up with nothing.
-
Which graduates were invited to Mariinsky and didn't accept? Is there a chance that they will still go if other offers don't materialise or are they already listed as joining other companies? Hope the other graduates get good offers soon...
If there were such cases we will only find out about them if either the graduates themselves or Fateyev talk about it publicly. Usually such information isn’t publicly available (unless you count rumours; I don’t).

Rank the Mariinsky primas from favourite to least favourite.
It’s a tough one. My absolutely favourite ballerina (Mariinsky or otherwise) is Ulyana Lopatkina. And while Diana Vishneva isn’t necessarily a favourite of mine, I still think she’s in a league of her own and cannot and shouldn’t be compared to anyone else. I would struggle to rank the rest.
Yulia Makhalina and Daria Pavlenko are living legends and stunning ballerinas, but they hardly dance anymore. Alina Somova and Ekaterina Kondaurova are beautiful and unique in their own individual way. I don’t particularly like Oksana Skorik or Viktoria Tereshkina, but this has more to do with personal preference and taste rather than anything else.
I can give you my Top 3 Mariinsky ballerinas:
Ulyana Lopatkina
Diana Vishneva
Olesya Novikova (not a prima but should be one)

About Olesya Novikova, is it possible she hasn't been promoted because there are only a certain amount of spots for principle dancers? Skorik's promotion surprised me, and I don't want to be mean, but Yulia Makhalina barely performs with the Mariinsky and mostly teaches at the Vaganova, and, it's hard to say this because she is such a legend, but wouldn't it be fair to younger dancers to get promoted like Novikova if Makhalina left completely?
I’m not privy to the Mariinsky’s promotions policy, so I can’t give you a definitive answer. Dancers get promoted to primas once in a blue moon:
Oksana Skorik promoted in 2015
Ekaterina Kondaurova promoted in 2012
Alina Somova promoted in 2008
Viktoria Tereshkina promoted in 2008
The rest (Vishneva, Lopatkina, Pavlenko, Makhalina) have been principal dancers since the 1990s and aren’t as active anymore.
It appears that the Mariinsky are very selective and careful when it comes to promoting dancers to principals, though soloists and coryphees progress through the ranks quickly and get plenty of great opportunities.
As far as Olesya Novikova is concerned: she has had three children in the past seven years. Given how many maternity leaves she’d taken (2009, 2013, 2015), Mariinsky’s decision to promote other ballerinas isn’t that surprising. I think Olesya is next in line for promotion (provided that she doesn’t decide to have another baby). Given that promotions happen every 3-4 years, we may see her as a prima within the next two years.
