Manga Review: 'Skip and Loafer' #7
Skip and Loafer, Vol. 7 by Misaki Takamatsu, Nicole Frasik
Tumblr media
comedy
coming of age
romance
wholesome manga
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The spring semester roars into action and the gang splits up among its many classes. Mitsumi is determined to corral as many new friends as possible, to make the most of her burgeoning high-school experience, but reality is a bit crueler than she was expecting. SKIP AND LOAFER v7 renews its focus as a character drama, and in doing so, deftly splits its characters' time and expectations between manifesting and navigating the uncertainty inherent in new (and unstable) interpersonal dynamics.
Mitsumi and Makoto share a class, and together they come to the awkward agreement that Mitsumi may have spoiled her good fortune as a first-year student. But have no fear! Mitsumi has a cute bento and the willpower to greet anonymous students on Day 1. But it's tough. Makoto is used to being a loner. Mitsumi, for the first time, struggles with being ignored, brushed aside, and sometimes deliberately cut out of conversations or social dynamics. For example, during gym class prep, Mitsumi and two other girls are hanging up some banner or other, but when someone calls for volunteers for another task, the other girls slip away without a thought (Girl 1: "We're gonna go help!"; Girl 2: "Thanks for finishing up!"; Mitsumi: "Huh?"). Mitsumi, a budding socialite and strident conversationalist, for the first time, must learn how to adapt.
Yuzu is in a class where she doesn't know anyone. Mika is in Sousuke's class, and Kenta and Tsukasa are in another class altogether.
Yuzu's case encompasses the middle-third of SKIP AND LOAFER v7, and it's a tear-inducing undertaking that again avails readers to the author's skill in developing vulnerable characters. Everyone thinks Yuzu, pretty and peaceable, attractive and amicable, will have no trouble getting up to speed. The truth is less kind. Her first new friend group lies to her, disregards her emotions, tries to manipulate her into dating some schmuck, and then blames her for the fallout. Yuzu has been here before.
Fortunately, readers are treated to a curious new pairing: Mika and Makoto. For six brief pages, the two girls exchange doubts and insecurities, and come to the immediately realization that Yuzu's façade is a constant cry for help. It's a clever and effective narrative transition; individuals who normally don't interact, directly, somehow share an emotional fault line with the manga's most fragile character. As such, when Makoto goes to Yuzu home to see what's wrong, the two friends swiftly acknowledged that this whole "growing up" business is a lot of harder than they realized.
Yuzu has to learn how to stand on her own, but Makoto has to learn that it's often necessary to step up and lend support when her friends falter.
SKIP AND LOAFER v7 is a good volume for the way it carries its characters into a new chapter, while also, not-so-subtly revealing the next great hurdle or two. Mitsumi is increasingly comfortable with expressing her thanks and affection for Sousuke's kindness. Meanwhile, new characters enter the fray: Ebuchi, a gentle and random classmate; Chieri Yasaka, a girl who is no doubt a schemer and staunch egoist; and Momo Yukawa, a chemistry wizard who kind of likes that some students (like Mitsumi) are more whimsical than they initially appear.

Regina 'live-watches' Last Man: Zenmou no Sousakan S01E07.
This time up, the American Embassy ask the team and Minami for help in investigating a found body. And more backstory is revealed about Minami.
I snuck a peek at the ending of the episode because of @okonominyaki's comments, so I could have a good sense of what's coming. The opening of this has a sting to it because of it.
Aaaand, I watched a clip from it this morning on Instagram, so I'm not only spoiled for that, but for the identity of Deborah, whom Minami keeps name-dropping.
She's his ex-wife. And Godo's reaction to learning this is hilarious, from his first reaction of 'How did you pull that?' in amazement and then in sarcasm when he learns the truth of it.
And now she's flirting with Godo and he's having none of it. This is a fascinating dynamic, wheee.
Mutually beneficial relationship; I see how it is.
Deborah has explained that she wants Godo and Minami to investigate the widow of the person who was found dead because she is suspected to be a spy.
Minami: I'm very interested…. she's beautiful, isn't she? Me: Hello, Yukawa Manabu.
(Probably not a Galileo reference, but it's very similar to a few lines of dialogue in that show. Actually, scratch that, I bet Masha put that in there. Apparently the show-runners have been allowing a lot of adlibbing, so a reference like this could be on purpose.)
Ah, she's competent. And very closed and composed. Godo isn't jealous but he is feeling a bit overlooked; also gathering new information about Minami as he observes that interaction between them.
Hmmm. I can work with that when it comes to writing fanfic.
Minami is sitting on the other side of Godo at the briefing this time. (And he's there again later on. Either he wanted to be there or he was led there by Godo. It doesn't mean anything, but it was a change, so I noted it.)
I know it's a trope in crime shows for the investigators to speculate before proof is even found to support that speculation. I find it annoying and harmful. Pet peeve when it happens in otherwise well-written shows. Grr.
Minami sitting there agreeing with me. His unimpressed look is a thing of beauty.
Of course, that could mean that he's going to be proven right in some way, and that could deconstruct the trope. Maybe.
Also, I'm not so impressed with the bias of the writer about the women characters of this episode. One is treated as a flirt, and the other a black widow? Yeah, no thanks. (Redeemed only slightly by the end of the show.)
This is a very gossipy group of subordinates, lol. Izumi and Agatsuma teasing Manome about his crush on Sakura.
Godo to Minami: Your bias is showing. … And you're a hypocrite. Minami: ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄
Hey, Debbie, let me have that supermarket sushi!
If Minami asked for her to bring snacks then she undoubtedly asked what he wanted for Godo…
I find this whole business of Godo accusing Deborah of being upset, sussy. Like he's testing to see if she does still care about Minami despite the casualness of their former relationship.
There have been a few hints that Minami's blindness is such that he's still able to make out shapes. This episode is leaning hard on that. He stops short of two people on the ground while using his cane without indication from them to stop. And shortly after that, though this could be chalked up to camera work indicating to the audience what is important, he appears to be cognizant that a glass of water left behind can be dusted for fingerprints.
Given that he's already been playing a few things close to his chest (why he's in Japan, that Deborah is his ex-wife) it's possible this is one of them.
If that's the case, I hope it doesn't lead to a reversal of the problem that caused Minami's blindness because I'm never here for that.
The twist here is utterly ridiculous. Lol. But! Truth is always stranger than fiction, and it makes both character and narrative sense.
Curse you, Japanese drama! How dare you always tug my heartstrings!
This is all down to Masha's ability to act, that the shift from outer perspective to inner perspective, has us be able to tell the difference in his perception. He appears able to see during that shift, to see the truth of the person sitting in front of him, instead of the lie.
This one is ostensibly about investigation, of course, but thematically, there was so much about interpersonal relationships of the romantic variety. It's actually hard to balance that, and I should know, because case fic is my bane and romance comes much easier to me.
Don't snoop, Godo! You won't like what you find!
That was a better twist, from my speculation of last week. It makes much more narrative sense to have Godo discover on his own that Minami has been investigating his parents' death.
What a cliffhanger, though.

In 1935, Hideki Yukawa explained why protons and neutrons — particles made of quarks — stick together. Only now do physicists have the tools to investigate how rarer groupings of quarks interact.

Kisekae Insights #24: GJ Club - how a spinon became a spinoff featuring Kyōya and Kasumi Shinomiya
Tumblr media
(Art by 結城辰也)
The Kisekae Insights series has allowed me to bring the spotlight back on Waifu Network animes that I haven’t posted much about in the past due to lack of fanart or lack of interest. Like Hidamari Sketch in the last instalment, GJ Club will be no exception until I continue posting the usual content in my anime posts. Honestly, it was good while it lasted.
While Hidamari Sketch is a fairly popular and notable anime, GJ Club, sadly, isn’t. The anime was adapted from the light novel series written by Shin Araki and it only received one 12-episode season in 2013 and an OVA in 2014. Since it is a slice-of-life series, not much is known about the characters’ histories, which made it very easy to adapt into my personal project. All these factors coinciding with it being the 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who made GJ Club the perfect anime to adapt and expand on.
Background information
For some reason, the light novel has been a bit hard to find. In short, while you are able to read it online, the sources are unfortunately scarce.
From 2013 to 2015, NanoDesu Translations posted translations of the light novel. They published a PDF and EPUB of the first volume (which is available on archive.org) and translated up to Chapter 17 of the second volume. It was then abandoned for two years before Haraguro Scanlations picked it up. As of September 2018, they only finished up to Chapter 3 of the third volume (with the first chapter being translated by Shadowys on Baka-Tsuki) and there are no further updates after that, with the exception of a one-off chapter released in November 2020.
As of August 2021, however, all the original translations by NanoDesu seem to have been deleted from their site. All the translations are available on AsiaNovel, but there are no illustrations because the reader doesn’t seem to support images. If the images weren’t discarded in the code of the novels, then all they would need to do is add support for them and then they would appear.
There are 9 volumes and two special volumes for GJ Club along with 8 volumes and a special volume for its middle school spinoff. It’s honestly telling how popular the series was when the translators have all but abandoned it.
Shin Araki also wrote an additional spinoff to GJ Club, namely GE: Good Eater, and a sequel, namely KB Club. GE is set in a fantasy world with the characters being based off the characters of GJ Club, while KB Club turns everything meta by having both series be the creations of a high school light novel club, with the characters of GJ Club being based off the members of said club, right down to their names. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of that approach given how I’ve adapted GJ Club into my personal project. In the end, I guess we’ll never really know what happens in the novels, but at least we have this.
Watching the anime and listening to the character music was how I first realised that anime was sexist to males because of the female-centric focus in most animes. Kyōya only gets one character song in the series, and even then it’s a duet with Megumi. If that isn’t sexist to you, then I don’t know how I can convince you that a lot of animes are sexist.
In January 2015, I published two posts outlining my idea for an English dub of the series that also fits with GJ Club’s depiction in my personal project. The setting would be changed to London, England, specifically the areas of Chiswick, Ealing and Acton (where their school is located) and the characters would speak with British accents. The images in the original post are dead because I idiotically copied the images from the site instead of saving and reuploading them to the post, but since I’m grubbing for content anyway, I’m going to repost my character details as follows:
Kyōya: The protagonist of the series. When he started Year 10, he was kidnapped by the girls when he walked into an old school building, hoping to find the Culture Club. He moved to London from Manchester just before he started Year 7. His best friend outside the club is someone named Tesshin Yokomizo (横溝徹心) who is a local and not seen in the anime. In the GJ Club, he is nicknamed “Kyoro” and despite his spinelessness, he seems to have talent in dealing with the girls around him. His birthday is December 18. Due to a crisis involving his family during his childhood, he and his sister Kasumi were left in the care of a family guardian just before they moved to London, but she left when Kyōya started Year 10. It might have been that childhood incident that emotionally scarred him and left him spineless…
Mao: The Year 11 president of the GJ Club. Her family is rich and they live in a mansion in Ealing. She has a habit of biting and picking on Kyōya when she is bored or angry. She always reads books and watches shows without kissing scenes.
Shion: The only daughter in her family, Shion is an expert chess player with many brothers, all experts in some kind of activity. She speaks in a Birmingham (Brummie) accent because her mother and a few of her brothers were born in Birmingham. It is unknown if Shion was born in Birmingham herself.
Megumi: The calm and nice middle sister of the Amatsuka family. She likes knitting and she is always seen making tea and cakes in the club room. In the same year level as Kyōya.
Kirara: Born in Swansea, Wales, Kirara is the tallest and strongest member of the club. She speaks English in simple, monotone sentences. Welsh is her first language. Kirara can be seen eating meat, sometimes sharing it with Kyōya, but not with anyone else. She is afraid of spiders and has little tolerance to alcohol.
Tamaki: (voiced by Karen Gillan!) The newest member of the GJ Club when Kyōya becomes a Year 11 student. Like Kyōya, she is kidnapped and forced to join the club. Her nickname is “Tama”. Her family is from Glasgow and they run a Shinto shrine in Acton. She has several younger siblings.
Kasumi: Kyōya’s younger sister, who was born in Manchester. After a visit to the GJ Club, she becomes inspired to start a middle school division when she starts Year 7. She has a brother complex and she mistook Mao for being a primary school student when she met her. Her proficiency in Welsh is better than her brother’s, who can probably speak at a beginner level.
Geraldine: Shortened to “Jill”. She moved to Chiswick from Swansea to be with her sister, Kirara. She first met Kyōya at Ealing Broadway Station when she had difficulty buying a Tube ticket. She didn’t really understand how to use the ticket machine, so Kyōya went to help her. After this, Jill considered Kyōya her “samurai master”. Jill doesn’t speak English fluently, so she relies on her whiteboard to communicate with the others. She is as strong as her sister and she joins Kasumi’s GJ Club when she starts Year 7 in Chiswick.
Seira: The youngest sister of the Amatsuka family. Though she speaks in a typical London accent, she sometimes talks through her cat clip in Received Pronunciation (the Queen’s English/RP) using ventriloquism to state her true feelings to Kyōya, who she has a grudge against.
Mori: The maid of the Amatsuka family. She likes to ride a motorcycle.  A running gag is her twirling before Kyōya much to his pleasure and annoyance to the rest of the club members. Sometimes, her mother takes her place without the family even noticing due to their identical appearance.
Kyōya, Kasumi and Momoka: The Brother, the Child and the Yandere
Normally in previous instalments, I would have described each character separately, but because their backstories are heavily intertwined, I will introduce them all at once in this section. Most of the backstory takes place around the Battle of Koshi Castle in December 2013 and during the Manchester Campaign of 2005-2013, which I have already covered in #15.
Tumblr media
When Hiroki Ichigo’s twelfth incarnation was killed at Koshi Castle, he managed to escape in his TARDIS, where he regenerated into his new prototype, namely a four-year-old Kyōya. The TARDIS crashes outside North Manchester General Hospital on 11 December 2005.
Earlier, Hiroki and Akari’s gametes (along with those of Hiroki’s brothers and their families) were taken by Reona Yukawa and placed in the Progenitor so that they could breed super-soldiers out of them. When Takumi Kamijō and Kyōko Sakura manage to escape from their cells (saving Nodoka Manabe and Azusa Nakano in the process), he changes the destination of the baby about to be released into the Progenitor’s time portal. That baby was Kasumi, one of the super-soldiers grown from Hiroki and Akari’s DNA. She ended up at the same hospital as well and was about to be taken home by a couple when Girl Power killed them, resulting in Kasumi being taken by Akari and Shaun.
Tumblr media
What remained of Hiroki was contacted by the spirit of Walpurgisnacht. Making a deal with her, Hiroki regenerated into his thirteenth incarnation, the female Momoka Mizutani. No, Momoka is not an OC for GJ Club, but she is based on the character of Apple Lam Chung-yan from the TVB drama A Great Way to Care II, played by Tavia Yeung. Momoka takes Hiroki’s TARDIS and heads to Salford, where with the help of Walpurgisnacht, she establishes a cha chaan teng café in the middle of a trading estate and hires a group of red drone Daleks as her workers, hiding their identities by having them disguise themselves as humans.
Tumblr media
Over the next eight years, Momoka gets close to the new Shinomiya family by influencing them through Kyōya’s dreams to come to her café. Eight years later, on 11 December 2013, the Fourth and Fifth Doctors come in with their companions. When the Shinomiya family come in, a confrontation with Ayaka Kikuchi and her army ensues before Momoka transmats the Shinomiya family to a Dalek spaceship, where she prepares to execute them using the Yashio’ori. However, the Yashio’ori is sabotaged by the enemy army so that the laser beam would not charge.
As Ayaka and her army attack the Dalek ship, Momoka uses the Dalek-enhanced machine guns to fend them off. While two Doctors confront the Master, Momoka is killed by Girl Power officers, resulting in Walpurgisnacht taking over her body as she regenerates, maintaining her current appearance. Read #15 to find out what happens after this.
Once the Battle of Koshi Castle and the Manchester Campaign conclude, the Fourth Doctor helps Kyōya and Kasumi move to Chiswick in 2008. Five years later, the events of the GJ Club anime take place. During his time in Chiswick, Kyōya gets a job at the post office there and later, studies a double degree in Japanese Studies and Politics at SOAS in the University of London while also learning Cantonese, Mandarin and Welsh in weekend and evening courses (apparently he also wanted to learn Taiwanese but they weren’t running any courses, but that’s alright, he can always learn it somewhere else, which he presumably did).
On a side note, I volunteered myself to be Kyōya’s English voice actor, so I’ve practiced my Mancunian accent by watching actors like Christopher Eccleston, Stephen Tompkinson, Karl Pilkington and maybe a bit of Peter Kay as well. The only problem was that I’m not even sure that my accent is even Manc because I can’t tell if I’m getting it wrong and sounding like someone from Liverpool, Yorkshire, Newcastle or even Scotland. Oh well, that’s what happens when you really get into things.
I don’t buy expansion packs, I make my own (budget allowing)
So as I said, GJ Club only got one season and an OVA to go with it. Do Kyōya and the GJ Club make further appearances in the series? You bet your ass they do.
After being absent for much of the Next Gen Series in 2014, Kyōya and Kasumi receive a letter from their aunt, Narutaki, asking to meet in Hong Kong after their mother, Akari, went missing following the Siege of Ōsaka, only to be followed by Mao and the rest of the GJ Club, who learnt where he was going and managed to get on the same flight as them.
Narutaki, who had taken her Girl Power friends and established a rogue faction separate from the main group, takes the GJ Club to Nijō Castle, where she explains the background behind the Manchester Campaign and the events of Series 8 and 9. Soon after, Girl Power’s commander, Daniel, sends his brother, Nathan, out to find Narutaki. Kyōya tries to contact Hiroki, but he is unable to get through to him. Luckily, the TARDIS arrives and the Doctor and Hiroki help Angela and the others repel the attacking Girl Power forces. Some more things happen and by the end of the story, we learn that Kyōya and Mao are dating.
That Christmas, Kyōya and Kasumi head up to Manchester, but the Doctor briefly takes them and their friends back to Hong Kong for a picnic with Hiroki and the rest of the Zhuge family.
A few years later in 2018, the GJ Club and Momoka get a cameo at the start and end of the Gokaiger TV movie special. By this point in time, Momoka’s café in Manchester has expanded to many other branches around the UK and in Hong Kong.
The next year in 2019, Kyōya, Kasumi, Mao and Megumi are featured in a four-part adventure in Soulbound Series 3, helping the cast solve the mystery of Parker’s past and Shinbu’s origins. Two years after in 2021, Kyōya and Kasumi move to Hong Kong (along with the GJ Club) and join the Superhero Project as the new ShinkenRed and ZyuohTiger. You’d think Kyōya would be against violence given his harmless tendencies, but I suppose his character has developed over the years despite having abandonment issues.
So this has been the involvement of GJ Club in my personal project. It’s a shame the series wasn’t more popular or it could have gotten a second season, a manga, more (and frequent) translations of the light novel or hell, even a licenced release. This series is just like Sea Princesses in how popular it was, but despite the number of episodes the anime got, at least Shin Araki hasn’t abandoned the series (by putting it in a spinoff no less) unlike Fabio Yabu, who hasn’t made anything new for Sea Princesses since 2010 after getting more animated episodes than GJ Club did. On the other hand though, neglected series with little material has been good development fodder for my personal project as it allowed me to bring awareness to the existence of those series while also developing backstories and afterstories for them.

Note
My favorite thing is how she said "handsome guys" like the other two guys aren't attractive at all 😂
I know right? In terms of IQ, EQ, heart, looks, position, intelligence…  I would think Yukawa-san is better than everyone in that group :P Hanako has such bad tastes~~

& if you want my opinions on what couples/combos to read in tzc,
all the ensemble + group stories tend to be really fun, and they highlight a nice moment for all the characters.
the chapters denote all relationships as x character/y character, but it’s not necessarily romantic. chapters that involve more than two people are usually good.
for specifics:
Kamine/Gouda
sweet couple that starts off as stoic dude + shy gal, but develops into doting boyfriend + bold girlfriend.
Vol. 1 Ch. 16 - Contact (Gouda/Kamine)
Vol. 2 Ch. 30 - Watching You From Afar (Gouda/Kamine)
Vol. 3 Ch. 41 - Let Me Hear It (Gouda/Kamine)
Vol. 4 Ch. 46 - I Want More (Gouda/Kamine)
Vol. 4 Ch. 53 - Once More (Kamine/Gouda)
Vol. 5 Ch. 64 - Envy (Kamine/Gouda)
Vol. 5 Ch. 67 - Lovers (Chiaki/Kana)  (but focuses on k/g)
Vol. 5 Ch. 70 - Temptation (Takeru/Ayaka) (it’s their first names)
Vol. 6 Ch. 88 - First Love’s Crazy (Kamine/Gouda)
Vol. 8 Ch. 137 - Tryst (Kamine/Gouda)
Vol. 9 Ch. 153 - I Want to Be Your Strength (Kamine/Gouda)
Ch. 187 - Am I That Bad? (Gouda/Noro/Kamine)
Chiaki/Kana
comedy duo. the dude thought the confession was a joke for like, half a year.
Vol. 1 Ch. 8 - Short Distance Relationship (Chiaki/Kana)
Vol. 2 Ch. 21 - Love Comedy (Chiaki/Kana) (kinda more racy)
Vol. 3 Ch. 35 - X-File (Chiaki/Kana)
Vol. 4 Ch. 47 - Score (Chiaki/Kana)
Vol. 5 Ch. 67 - Lovers (Chiaki/Kana)
Vol. 5 Ch. 71 - Froth (Chiaki/Kana)
Vol. 5 Ch. 75 - Let Bygones be Bygones (Chiaki/Kana)

this is nonromantic gal pals BUT…. IT’S SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE ROMANCE THESE TWO GALS ARE SHACKLED TO……
by extension reading shibasaki chapters gives good context for her, and I think she’s fun, and her petty rivalry with the dude she’s shackled with is fun, but I Dont Dig The Romance Angle

energetic girl who joined astronomy club because the boy she likes is the club president, but since he’s a year older, he’s graduated already & now they’re in a long distance relationship
(kaga’s a dude who joined astronomy club because he got a crush on sasahara, and nanase’s his childhood friend who has a crush on him, so they’re all tangentially related and it’s a nice microcosm of Emotions)

Vol. 10 Ch. 172 - Follow the Stars (Nanase/Kaga/Sasahara/Yukawa)
Ch. 193 - Spica (Nanase/Kaga)
Furuya/Minagawa
The girl’s cute. Very go-at-her-own-pace, lighthearted to the point people think she’s insincere, but she’s just here for a good time with the boy she likes. She also goes out of her way to get along with the dude’s sister. IMO it starts out as Kinda Weird but levels out into something nice.
Vol. 1 Ch. 2 - Insincere Girl (Furuya/Minagawa)
Vol. 1 Ch. 13 - Brother’s Girlfriend (Furuya/Minagawa)
Vol. 1 Ch. 16.1 - Plus! One (Omake) (pg 9)
Vol. 2 Ch. 20 - Reply (Furuya/Minagawa) (this is where I feel it starts being solid)
Vol. 3 Ch. 40 - Trap (Furuya/Minagawa)
Vol. 6 Ch. 82 - Pure (Furuya/Minagawa)
Vol. 6 Ch. 98 - Actual Feelings (Furuya/Minagawa)
Vol. 7 Ch. 114 - Pursuit (Hotaru/Minagawa)
Vol. 9 Ch. 140 - Quiz (Minagawa/Furuya)
Vol. 9 Ch. 149 - As a Girl (Minagawa/Furuya)
Ch. 182 - Present (Minagawa/Furuya)
Ch. 195 - Brother’s Girlfriend (Minagawa/Hotaru)
Noro
he’s an idiot
Noro-focused chapters usually have Alice, and she has a thing where she’s crushing on a dude who likes another girl, but also, she starts out Extreme Yandere before here characterization levels out to Regular Yandere (probably because the writer starts letting her talk to people other than the dude she likes)
Vol. 3 Ch. 45.5 - Omake (basically Alice)
Vol. 8 Ch. 126 - Stupid (Alice/Noro)
Vol. 9 Ch. 139 - Nuisance (Alice/Noro)
Vol. 9 Ch. 152 - Dot to Dot (Alice/Noro)
Ch. 181 - Unrequited Love (Alice/Takase)
Ch. 187 - Am I That Bad? (Gouda/Noro/Kamine)
characters I avoid:
Akiga
he’s the delinquent gal’s boyfriend but I hate him
Takano/Sugawara
nothing bad about them I guess but… kinda boring… kinda annoying….
Love Master (aka Saki)
I hate him
Takase/Kanda
starts out relatively entertaining but the longer it drags on the more annoying it gets
Chiba/Kirihara
a girl has a crush on clueless teacher which isn’t what I’m about
Saejima/Souma
weak boy wants to learn how to be strong from strong girl, but it’s kind of uncomfy
Yamane
I don’t like him
Motoyama
I don’t like him
I actually think Sonobe’s nice, but everything around her revolves around her weight, and she isn’t really drawn that differently from the other girls, so like..... it feels very adult dude writing teen gal & that irks me.
To end this extremely long list, here are the chapters above but in order (bc some of them are actually relevant to each other)
Vol. 1 Ch. 8 - Short Distance Relationship (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 1 Ch. 16 - Contact (Gouda/Kamine) Vol. 2 Ch. 21 - Love Comedy (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 2 Ch. 30 - Watching You From Afar (Gouda/Kamine) Vol. 3 Ch. 35 - X-File (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 3 Ch. 41 - Let Me Hear It (Gouda/Kamine) Vol. 3 Ch. 42 - Making Your Kouhai Cry (Ayane/Urara) Vol. 3 Ch. 43 - Unsentimental (Sunagawa/Toda) Vol. 4 Ch. 46 - I Want More (Gouda/Kamine) Vol. 4 Ch. 47 - Score (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 4 Ch. 48 - It’s Not That I Don’t Want To (Sunagawa/Toda) Vol. 4 Ch. 50 - Rumor (Ogiue/Toujou) Vol. 4 Ch. 53 - Once More (Kamine/Gouda) Vol. 4 Ch. 59 - Ahhh (Ogiue/Toujou) Vol. 5 Ch. 64 - Envy (Kamine/Gouda) Vol. 5 Ch. 67 - Lovers (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 5 Ch. 67 - Lovers (Chiaki/Kana) (but focuses on k/g) Vol. 5 Ch. 70 - Temptation (Takeru/Ayaka) (it’s their first names) Vol. 5 Ch. 71 - Froth (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 5 Ch. 75 - Let Bygones be Bygones (Chiaki/Kana) Vol. 5 Ch. 80.2 - Sports Festival (Part Two) Vol. 5 Ch. 80.3 - Sports Festival (Part Three) Vol. 5 Ch. 81.2 - Summer Begins (Part Two) Vol. 6 Ch. 88 - First Love’s Crazy (Kamine/Gouda) Vol. 6 Ch. 97 - Aquarium (Toda/Sunagawa) Vol. 7 Ch. 103 - Airhead (Matsuura/Urara) Vol. 7 Ch. 106 - Poker Face (Toujou/Ogiue) Vol. 7 Ch. 111 - I’ll Lend You My Chest (Matsuura/Urara/Love Master) Vol. 8 Ch. 120 - High Five (Toujou/Ogiue) Vol. 8 Ch. 128 - Ninjutsu (Kana/Chiaki) (a mom tries to escape an awkward situation) Vol. 8 Ch. 136 - Joker (Toda/Sunagawa) Vol. 8 Ch. 137 - Tryst (Kamine/Gouda) Vol. 9 Ch. 147 - Shyness (Kana/Chiaki) Vol. 9 Ch. 153 - I Want to Be Your Strength (Kamine/Gouda) Vol. 9 Ch. 155 - Stimulation (Toda/Sunagawa/Kaji/Akagi) Vol. 10 Ch. 163 - I Want to Be a Good Senpai (Matsuura/Urara) Vol. 10 Ch. 169 - Best Couple Vol. 10 Ch. 171 - Play (Matsuura/Urara) Ch. 175 - Luna Luna (Kana/Chiaki) Ch. 176 - Mischief (Toda/Sunagawa) Ch. 180 - Temperature Difference (Toujou/Ogiue) Ch. 184 - Melting in the Night (Toujou/Ogiue) Ch. 187 - Am I That Bad? Here at Danganromps, we love to hear about your OCs and say nice things about them, but today I’d like to turn the tables! After finishing V3 (don‘t worry, no spoilers here), I was struck with a flash of inspiration and started writing my own separate killing game, because screw what anyone says, do what you wanna do! I’m not too far in (first murder has just happened), but I wanted to share the participants and see what people think! There’s only 10, as I‘m not sure I have enough ideas to make a full-length game, but I’m pretty happy with those I have. So here we go - below the link because it’s a long post:
Hiroko Shizuma - Ultimate Racing Driver ”Racing is the one thing that makes life worth living” Our protagonist, Hiroko, began her way to becoming the Ultimate Racing Driver from a young age, racing her ride-on toys around the garden. At the age of 8, her parents bought her go-kart lessons, and she was soon competing (and winning) against kids twice her age. Since then, she has raced in many different kinds of vehicles and has never lost. Aside from racing, she doesn’t have much confidence in her abilities, but she is a very caring person, often the first to comfort people when they need it.
Yu Ryutaro - Ultimate Policeman ”Can I be of assistance, madam?” My original image of the Ultimate Policeman was Ishimaru turned up to 11, but that was soon toned down to the caring but stern person we have today. He immediately takes charge of the situations the group find themselves in, but does so out of a duty to ensure no harm comes to anyone. He’s also very formal, calling people ‘Sir‘ and ‘Madam‘, even amongst friends.
Kazuki Ito - Ultimate Chemist ”I do experiments with chemicals. And yes, I have accidentally exploded some” The opposite of the ‘mad scientist’ we often think of, Kazuki is an outgoing person and tries to be friendly with everyone. He has a great respect for his area of science, acknowledging that chemistry can be deadly, but also fun. His enthusiasm for the fun part comes across when he talks about his talent, but he also loves hearing about other peoples’ talents
Hitoshi Minamino - Ultimate Climber “Ugh, can‘t get any peace and quiet around here” Not really a fan of other people, Hitoshi began his climbing career in order to get away and be alone. He far prefers silence to noise, and often appears quite cold and aloof.
Izumi Yukawa - Ultimate Videographer “I‘ll go first cause I‘m awesome“ Izumi is very forthright, to say the least. She says things as she sees them, without much regard for anyone’s feelings. She‘s also got quite a high opinion of herself, assuming that everyone she meets knows about her work, and getting very defensive if they haven‘t.
Naoki Takano - Ultimate Contortionist “My talent is the Ultimate Contortionist. I bet they’re wondering what that is. I should tell them“ A tall, skinny guy who is capable of fitting his entire body into a small box. Although quite willing to make friends, Naoki doesn’t have much of an internal monologue, instead verbalising his thoughts into his regular conversation. This makes him seem very strange, and puts people off.
Lina Hulsmann - Ultimate Tourist “I‘m the Ultimate Tourist, le Touriste Ultime” Originally from Germany, Lina has travelled the world, sampling different cultures and taking photos with her trusty camera, which she carries with her everywhere. She regularly drops phrases from different languages into her speech, which many people find annoying.
Mami Kodama - Ultimate Dancer “I-I‘m sorry, I was just, um...sorry” Quite possibly the most adorable looking thing you’ll see, Mami is a tiny girl who wears a cute dress with pink frills and bows. Normally, she is quite timid and nervous, but when surprised, the foul language that comes from her mouth destroys the image that she presents. (I’m considering a different talent for her because small, adorable dancer is a little close to Hiyoko)
“Ayako” - Ultimate ??? “You dont get it. I don‘t know who I am.“ ‘Ayako‘ woke up in a standard school uniform, and no memory of her name or talent. After breaking down in front of everyone because she couldn’t remember, Hiroko stepped in and said they would call her Ayako after her best friend from middle school.
Taki Torisawa - Ultimate Linguist “I, myself, am fluent in 6 different languages“ Although Taki is very quiet and reserved, he has a drive to overcome his shyness and be part of the group. He dresses very formally, but after talking to him for a short period of time, you realise that he’s a really nice guy.
So there they are, I’d love to know what you think. In addition, I will admit to knowing very little about Japanese names, so let me know if any of them are nonsense/accidentally rude/names that wouldn’t be used for that character’s gender/the same as a famous character. Maybe one day I’ll share the story too, if I ever finish it.

Kokkoku 刻刻
Plot: Having failed 19 job interviews in one day, Juri Yukawa's dreams of moving out of her parents' home are utterly dashed. Stuck living with her working mother Nobuko, NEET brother Tsubasa, laid-off father Takafumi, and single-parent sister Sanae, the only hope for this family to raise a decent adult is her little nephew Makoto. However, this struggling family's life takes a turn for the worse when Makoto and Tsubasa are violently kidnapped by a mysterious organization and held for ransom. With only 30 minutes to deliver five million yen to the criminals, Juri's grandfather reveals a dangerously powerful secret to her and Takafumi. By offering blood to her grandfather's mystical stone, the three enter the world of "Stasis," a version of their world where time stops for everyone but the users. Having arrived at their destination, their rescue efforts go awry when they are assailed by a surprising group of people who are somehow able to move around within Stasis. While all hope seems lost, a monstrous giant known only as the Herald appears amidst the chaos, its intent and motivations as cryptic as the very nature of this timeless world. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Episodes: 12
Main Characters: Juri Yukawa
Points: 6.75/10
Kokkoku revolves around a world where time has stopped for humanity except for a few persons. This world is called “Stasis” and is the normal human world without time being a thing. This is also more or less the complete plot of Kokkoku as time doesn't move for at least 95% of the whole series. The 12 episodes still leave many questions to be answered, because many things have never been deeply explored. The antagonist isn't really fleshed out either. Up to today I still don't fully understand how this time is of interest and how becoming a herald (a super interesting being within the anime) is of merit to him. He's been researching the Stasis though and for that reason he's been dubbed an antagonist, an enemy of the main characters. The anime went from mystery to thriller really quickly, which somehow made Kokkoku a lot less interesting, because suddenly it was all about beating the antagonist and dispelling him from the Stasis, so he may never enter it again.
Tumblr media
The anime never exactly brings about character development, because that's simply not the focus. There are many characters I have already forgotten the name of honestly, they weren't given a real backstory and they don't play a major role within the fight, except for Judy, the strong female lead who does deserve praise for how brave and strong she is, although her talent to dispel people from the Stasis isn't something she acquired through hard work or anything.
The basic concept is indeed a lot more interesting than the execution. The pacing is rather weird and unstable. They try to end almost every episode with a dangerous cliffhanger which is easily resolved in the next episode, which took the excitement from watching the series, because it just doesn't feel dangerous any more. Real danger didn't exist, because nothing ever truly happened within 12 episodes. The conclusion of the anime is anti-climatic and also a bit too sudden. The world stays unexplored throughout the whole time; is the Stasis really just the normal human world where everything remains stuck in motion?
Tumblr media
The only really good thing about Kokkoku is the exciting OP, while the crazy psycho shit of fighting sir hulk personally was perhaps a bit too weird.

Anime Idea: Schrodinger’s Cat
So this girl works at a cat/maid cafe and there can be cats there too but it’s hella kawaii and she wears cat ears in a maid costume
But also
She’s fucking good at quantum mechanics so she also studies really hard but has to work and like she’s cute as hell but we have to have an episode where we address the amount of stress.
So at first she hides her nerd side a bit so people can still think she’s cute but this probably works as well as any nerd trying to hide their nerd self
Which is not very well we cannot have more than the first five episodes where people think she isn’t a huge nerd
But
There’s other girls and their quirks reference other major scientists, either in this field or other fields
We reference scientists from not just America like Hideki Yukawa or those from India and the Middle East and such that we’ve ignored way too fucking long.
Also girl scientists too because fuck yeah I need those women drilled into people’s memories
The main character is named Shuroko (schrodinger is japanized probably to shurodingaa シュロデインガー how the hell do you subscript the i in mobile typing I forgot)
But anyways the cat cafe evolves from a cafe to the schools biggest and raddest study group with cats and shuroko teaches good shit.
Like kiddos watching it learn some rad shit too
We probably have an asshole teacher as the main antagonist, maybe some student bullies too but we all know some Umbridge motherfucker is the real villain.
But this is great because low key (as low key as I can fucking get) this is really feminist because girls can love whatever they love and also do science and guys too and also address the fact that the infantilization of women in media leads to a big ass slippery slope to excused pedophilia I’m not bitter and also respect women more
It probably ends with college applications but just
Also it’s Gay too there’s a lot of girls some of them get together and people are chill with it and we have Good Relationships

hi guys! i got home after 9. so i am six minutes late starting this post. 10:06 i mean.
anyway god dang it! i forgot my dream again. i think i was thinking about math and statistics though. numbers are super hard in dreams though because all the information changes and melts between instants.
i got up at a reasonable time- 7:40. still got out of the shower super late though. i’m not even sure what takes so long! maybe it’s because i brush my teeth and blow dry my hair and everything in that span of time so it’s not just “hopped in the shower at 7:50 and oH GOD IT’S 8:15.”
i tried to have a bigger breakfast than usual- i had a bagel and some bacon i put in the microwave. and a big glass of orange juice. i watched snoopy roll around in a patch of sunlight while i ate.
then i biked to campus a little late. i was super thankful that the light on the busy road happened to turn green right as i approached. if you miss it it’s a 2-minute wait for the next cycle.
i used my lecture notes today when i started the lab period!!! people started working on their labs while i was talking though and i got a little discouraged. i’ll need to ask for feedback over email i think. maybe it’s still good to lecture so that the people who already know what’s going on can get started while the people who are still a little confused have some basis to start from.
some questions really get me turned around though. i feel kinda stupid when i have to check my notes on the lab to answer a question like “but are the forces REALLY always equal and opposite?” because i think i know an exception but really no i don’t. and then i have to explain why there are no exceptions and i try to draw on some experiences as an undergrad ta but i only remember half-sentences and bits of anecdotes and i have to try to string them together into a coherent explanation that is catered toward intro physics courses.
i’m always exhausted afterward. i really give it everything even though i’m not the best ta.
i got scolded by my supervisor for getting suzanne to help me fix one of the computers when i couldn’t find him. what had happened was, i saw him talking to suzanne out the door earlier since the lab is across from the office. when i needed to find him i checked his office first, didn’t find him, and asked suzanne if she knew where he went. when she said the other side of the building she also offered to take a look because she’d been having a couple computer problems too on monday.
but a few problems i did fix myself fairly quickly. i don’t mind troubleshooting, but sometimes i have to stand there and process information and i get quiet and kind of stare into space and don’t move and then i feel dumb because i’m not actually thinking using any words.
maybe those are less “processing” thoughts and more “racing circular” thoughts.
ehhh afterward i went to my lab office hour. one of my students with the computer issues was in there trying to finish. he didn’t though.
during my office session i received an email from the grad advisor. he said every single first year grad student needed to be at a meeting right now. it was the end of my session anyway so i packed up and went over to the office to see if anyone else had caught the email.
they were actually all discussing it with an older graduate student. jennica was scrolling through every email she’s received on the student account to try and find any previous information about the meeting. there was none.
we talked about it for a few minutes before the older grad student went up to talk to him. jennica and harrison and i went to get some lunch and i picked a smoothie up for rebika.
actually that was funny. i asked her what kind she wanted and she said “i don’t know” so i said there were like a hundred and i would have to pick one at random so she better be okay with kale. she said whatever so jennica found an online random number generator.
anyway while we were out we got another email from the grad coordinator. this one was really passive aggressive and sent to the whole department about how no one showed up and the lady making the presentation had “come all the way across campus.”
i said “???” because this was well after the situation had been explained to him. i’m not sure why he was so mean about it when it was his mistake. we had literally never heard about this before and he told us to be there one minute before it started.
eventually suzanne found a reminder for it on her phone. we had to hack it to find out when she had actually set that reminder to give us an idea of where we might have heard about it.
it was during our “graduate welcome” presentation back in the middle of august. it wasn’t written down anywhere. it had just been mentioned in passing and suzanne made a note of it in her phone because it sounded interesting. not because we knew it was required.
my classmates complained that we’d never gotten any reminders for it but i was more annoyed that we hadn’t received any written notification of the event in the first place.
after that we studied a lot. i talked about some problems, fudged some math on the blackboard, and scribbled some stuff down on the homework problems i’d printed.
harrison has started telling me to “stop talking” whenever i say something depressing. jennica picked up on it pretty fast too.
during coffee/cookie time at 3:30 ish i was chatting with one of the upper classmen aboutttt star trek i think it was. i’ve never watched it but i know... enough to talk about it i guess. i ended up having a fun discussion with taylor about the boundary between sci fi and fantasy when he said star wars was the superior sci fi story.
i said it was based on how heavily it leaned thematically on hard science and logic to inform its worldbuilding. taylor said it depended on the setting.
anyway i was talking to the guy and i was maybe talking about how i’d burned myself on my tea and also spilled some on my shirt because i’d burned my face and flinched violently. i said “thank you for listening to my problems” and jennica was all “don’t get her started, oh god, unless you want to be depressed.”
i laughed and said “hey did i ever tell you about the time i broke my ribs?” and that got, i guess, a surprised laugh out of him. jennica gave me a Look. “just kidding, my ribs were too soft to break then,” i said apologetically-but-not-really.
i really relate to that short homestuck comic about dave talking about how his bro would leave him in the ball pit when they went to the store. except the ball pit was a slab of concrete in a dark room.
ok! i said my last prayers for the physics midterm and then at about 5:30 jennica and i played five rounds of love letters, adventure time edition. we were going to 3 wins and it stayed pretty close. i admitted that it’s a lot more active with three players and four gets to be a little too much. she seemed to like it well enough at least.
then at 6:05-ish i dumped all my trail mix in my mouth and turbo biked over to the drc to take my Accommodated Test in their Testing Facility. i almost got hit by a car while i was in the crosswalk. i was crossing at the same time as another bike, but as soon as he was past and i was approaching the end of the road, a driver slammed on the gas and i had to actually for real hard brake. i stared at her as she passed, she made eye contact with me. i don’t know why she did that if she saw me.
guess i’ll just go screw myself.
anyway i got there about fifteen minutes before the test was gonna start. there was trouble with the check-in devices so i was glad i got there early. i had time to get settled and put my stuff away and brush my hair a little bit to get the helmet tangles out.
then i took the test for two and a half hours! i was allotted three, and my classmates had two, so i think i made good use of the extra time and didn’t panic too hard.
i’d felt super sleepy and lethargic all day. the test wasn’t much better. but... i recognized all the problems at least. and i knew how to start all of them. and i had enough time to finish to my satisfaction.
i’m not gonna say i did well on the test. but i did way better than if i hadn’t studied. which is kind of a given, but. i think i tried more study strategies this time and asked for more help and maybe that made a difference. can’t say. i had no particular feeling about it when i looked over my work. i noted where i knew what i was doing and where i’d forgotten something, and where i’d probably made a mistake but had no idea what to do instead, and i really have no idea how i did.
i think biking home right after that though did a lot toward helping me not die of lack of energy. i had to bike up the big hill because of where i was leaving campus. that was ok though, i got up in no time at all! in third gear, even!!!
then i got home, and took out the trash, and devoured an ice cream sandwich, and then made some dinner. and then i sat down at my desk for 20 minutes, did a little e&m homework, sent some emails, and started writing, and then here i am.
five minutes left. i will try to talk about something good about me.
i uh... i was gonna talk about something ta-related but i can’t think of anything right now that i actually like about my method haha.
i’ve made a lot of progress this last week toward finding a study strategy that works for me. i know i have to use more than one of the study style fields to really learn material. two is good, three is better, four is overwhelming. i know that i am learning material on the backburner even if i don’t consciously feel like i understand anything because i look at some problems and i’m like “oh! i know what that is!”
still having trouble remembering relationships between equations. but i think that will get better the more time i spend looking stuff up over and over. like i really Get the yukawa potential and how that one equation basically provides a link between classical mechanics and e&m, and that’s so cool.
tomorrow i’ve got group therapy and it’s SPAGHETTI DAY. AGAIN!!!!!! but i also gotta start studying for that e&m test on friday. i need to figure out how to do that. maybe i will find and talk to adamya since he was helping suzanne the other day.
ok. it is 10:45. i will stop writing now and meditate for a few minutes and then go to bed. i need to get up a few minutes early to pick up a package. i think it is either the rest of my stuff i’ve been trying to get my parents to send for the last month, or it’s the cat food that i’m glad i ordered when i did and not a day later.
later guys, i hope you are well. drink more water.

Read this masterpiece on AO3 at http://ift.tt/2roEytA
by Tea_For_Two
It happened so fast… but don't such stories all start that way?
Chaos, death, destruction?
Probably so. As such, it makes sense that even with their close bonds and efficient teamwork, even Karasuno couldn't handle the sudden Apocalypse. They'd been in a training match, with the Fukurodani Academy group, in match against Nekoma, and without warning they are overwhelmed, by soldiers that are trying to evacuate them, Zombies that are trying to eat them, and screams and chaos everywhere...obviously a bunch of unprepared teenagers in the middle of a match…
Well let's just say a lot of them got eaten or left behind that day.
A.K.A... A zombie apocalypse AU, where Karasuno are down in Tokyo for a training camp with the Fukurodani Academy Group, when Zombies take over.
