My fondest childhood memories definitely consist of the lovely people who I grew up with and derived my sense of humor/silliness from: my cousins Anna & Emily, Savannah -- my childhood best friend, and Kaleb, my eternal crush. Going to stick these here for now in case I lose the file or need it to be easier to search or something.
Notes on the ES21 soulmate mark AU fic I was rambling about in this post. Just kind of organizing things so when it comes time to write it I can hopefully write it quickly.
Some characters might not show up, others might get added to the list. Those missing so far are characters I either felt like I didn’t have confidence in writing or didn’t really remember since it’s been over 10 years since I finished the manga. Also trying to keep the cast of active characters on the small side even though a lot of characters will be there if only in general. All flashbacks/scenes/etc...will need proper fleshing out and so forth of course. These are all just my initial ideas, which are highly likely to evolve as I go as all my fics tend to do.
Probably going to wait until I finish watching the anime before writing it. Kind of tried to be canon compliant but also didn’t want to spend oodles of time tracking down details, so just kind of setting the goal as having fun with the AU and letting it do what it wants to do
Headcanons:
The World Bowl VI was Sunday, August 2, 2020. (It’s where the top football teams from around the world kick off the football season with a three week tournament started in 2015). The rehearsal is Friday, August 7, 2020. The wedding is Saturday August 8, 2020. Everyone goes home sometime Sunday, August 9, 2020. They have the ranch from Tuesday, August 4, 2020 – Monday, August 10, 2020.
High school football players form Japan, pro players from around the world, friends from school, friends from college are all invited along with their spouses, partners, significant others, and kids. Family members include Tetsuma’s mom who looks like him and their Seibu high school coach.
Sena –34 in December, played for Enma University from 2005 – 2009, been with the Seattle Superstars since 2009. Starting to contemplate retiring. The Seattle recruiter saw Sena’s tryout back in high school and tracked him down to beg him to sign with Seattle when Sena finally cashed in his NFL draft invitation from the Youth World Cup. Officially been in a long-distance relationship with Panther since 2010, but really they’ve kind of been a thing for longer than that.
Hiruma – 34 since February, plays for the San-Antonio Armadillos since 2006, likes to say he won’t retire until his age is his jersey number (55). Has been living with Mamori since 2006. They’re not married, but their daughter was born in 2017.
Kurita – 35 since July, played with the Tokyo Stallions, played from 2008 – 2016, works at the temple now.
Monta –34 on August 31, played for the San Antonio Armadillos from 2008 – 2013, having to retire after a career-ending injury at the start of the 2012 – 2013 season. Married Suzuna in 2008. They have a daughter born in 2010 and a son born in 2012. After retirement, he returned to Japan and he’s been coaching and teaching at Deimon ever since.
Juumonji –34 in October, Kuroki 34 on September 1, Togano 34 in October – all went on to have fairly normal jobs (banker, office worker, advertising). Kuroki is married with a kid or two, Juumonji is gay and has a partner who works the same bank and is his “roommate,” Togano is still single.
Yukimitsu – 34 since February, never played football again after high school, became a veterinarian.
Komusubi – 33 since January – never played football again after high school, became a personal trainer.
Ishimaru – 35 in October, never played football again after high school, went on to run in the Hakone Eikoden in university, has a normal job
Taki – 35 since April, played with the Orlando Divers 2004 – 2008 and then was traded to the Nashville Fighters where he’s been since 2008. Never married. Does he date anyone? Who knows. “My brother,” “my niece,” “my nephew.”
Musashi – 35 since Apirl, been playing the the Takekura Construction Babels since 2004, still working construction, personal life is pretty private, but does have a son who plays elementary school soccer.
Mamori 35 in November, ENL teacher to small children, still helps strategize football, been living with Hiruma since 2006 and had a daughter in 2017, living her best life
Suzuna 33 since March, married to Monta since 2008 with two kids, first of the group to get married, part-time matchmaker, has a decent success rate. Hiruma = You-nii, Juumonji = Monjii, Kuroki = Kurokki, Togano = Toga, Komusubi = Kamusubicchi, Yukimitsu = Yukki, Ishimaru = Tet-chan, Musashi = Musha-syan, Mamori = Mamo-nee, Kid = Kiddon,” Cereberus = Ceru, Sena has no nickname
Kid (Mushanokoji Shien) – 35 in November, comes from a noble line, at odds with parents over lifestyle choices and is now estranged, played with the Takekura Construction Babels from 2004 – 2005, played with the Tokyo Stallions from 2005 – 2010, played with the Houston Fishermen from 2010 – 2020. Started Sports Club with Tetsuma in 2012, which is a revitalization of the Boys and Girls Club concept. Hopes to keep working and growing the club in retirement. Been with Tetsuma since 2006. Wanted to enjoy being married so that’s why they waited until they were retired from pro ball.
Tetsuma – 35 since May, his mom looks just like him, played for the Tokyo Stallions from 2004 – 2008, played for the Dallas Titans from 2008 – 2020. Helps Kid run Sports Club, very good at organizing and budgeting.
Riku – turned 34 in April, played with Enma Fires from 2005 – 2009, played with the Yokohama Belugas from 2009 – 2015, still wears the team’s squid hat merch when it’s cold outside. Retired after a horrific injury which he still uses a cane for. Runs a pet bird store. Dated lots of people, still hasn’t settled for anyone.
Buffalo – 36 in October, got rid of the dreads soon after graduation in a bid to try and fit into Japanese society, now his hair is just long. Moved to the US in 2005 and ended up doing stuff like MMA, Ninja Warrior, and UFC. Has an American wife and three daughters (ages 12, 9, and 7).
Horide – no canon age, so let’s assume he’s roughly like late 50’s – early 60’s by 2020, still coaching football, but considering retirement, proud of all the kids who have ever been on his team. He’s pretty much in a parental position in the audience seating, and treated as one might treat a dad during such an event
Saba –mid-30’s, no real wiki info, became an office worker, has one child, didn’t play football after high school.
Aiuchi Hina – mid 30’s, not much wiki info, head cheerleader, Miss Seibu, probably married to an unnamed former teammate, and probably has at least one kid
Shin – 35 since July, played for Ojou Silver Knights 2004 – 2009, played for the New England Musketeers since 2009, has many Super Bowl wins, a true legend in both the US and Japan. Ignores tabloid rumors about him dating models and singers so he can enjoy some privacy with his partner, an indie rocker who preformed the half time show in 2013. They’ve been living together out in the middle of nowhere upstate New York since 2016 in a modest house that no one really would think celebrities owned. Has a condo near the Musketeers’ training facilities.
Sakuraba – 34 since March, played for the Ojou Silver Knights 2004 – 2009, played for the Seattle Superstars from 2009 – 2018, retired because he wanted to do something else with his life. Has gone on to play in a local band that’s had moderate success around the Pacific Northwest touring clubs, lounges, and bars. Keeps his private life very private.
Panther – probably 34 (no birthday given), likely graduated high school in 2005 like Sena, so probably met Sena the summer before sophomore year at high school, maybe has a summer birthday and was already 16 when they met. Nasa Aliens/Shuttles was a travel team he was in from 2001 – 2005, also played high school football with his local high school from 2001 – 2005, played with the San Antonio Armadillos since 2005, took business courses online and has a degree since he thought that might help him keep from falling into pitfalls other pro-athletes fall into with money and retirement. Didn’t have a cellphone when he met Sena, but they exchanged e-mail addresses. When Sena went to Notre Dame High School, they exchanged AIM handles and got to talk to each other more often since they were on the same time zone. Eventually exchanged numbers once Panther got a cellphone after graduating high school. Kind of were rocking the long distance relationship chic before it was an official relationship.
Jeremy – probably 34 or 35, the kid with the glasses, still close friends with Panther. Played at Stanford from 2004/2005 – 2006/2007, knows multiple languages for fun so he’s still not the best translator. Continued his degree while playing professionally because he promised. Played with the New England Musketeers since 2006/2007 and retired earlier in 2020. Has a son and daughter (ages 6 and 9). His wife is a teacher.
Homer – probably 34 or 35, the kid with the long hair, also still close friends with Panther and Jeremy, chose to go into the NFL draft upon graduating high school. Played for the Nashville Fighters from 2004/2005 – 2010/2011, and then got transferred to the Chicago Gangsters in 2010/2011 and retired in 2018 back to Houston where he helps run a charity that picks up the slack across Texas after disasters when FEMA can’t get its act together to help people. He’s currently trying to build the charity up so it can function in multiple states.
Big Brother Gonzales – probably 36 maybe about to turn 37, biggest guy from the travel team and probably the oldest member. Played with the University of Kentucky from 2002/2003 – 2006/2007, played for the Denver Pumas from 2006/2007 – 2010/2011 when he had a career ending injury. Had his kanji tattoo covered up and started collecting more tattoos. Has also gotten the correct kanji tattooed on him at some point.
Little Brother Gonzales – probably 32, never really got as big as his brother so he never played football after high school. Had a few tattoos including the dumb one from high school.
Vague Summary:
Sena/Panther soulmate fic in which Kid and Tetsuma’s wedding brings most the gang and more together. Kind of a choose to stick together thing? Idek. See where it goes. Think of it like a romcom movie maybe?
Soulmate Concept:
In this world, soulmates are considered near-extinct but they really aren’t. Lots of people have a wide variety of soulmates, it’s just that their soulmarks aren’t very obvious. For example, Mamori and Hiruma both have a splattering of freckles on their hands that are actually a continuation of each other’s pattern, but it’s too subtle and freckley to really realize what it truly means. Other people might have birthmarks that fit together or have moles placed in the exact same places or mirrored places, etc…However, there’s a subclass of soulmate marks for those who have a truly deep bond. Those marks have a more distinct look to them. Sena has what looks like roses cascading down his Soulmate marks tend to start developing upon meeting your soulmate and evolve as your relationship deepen, so Mamori and Hiruma upon meeting in first-year were probably like huh freckles, and by second year it’s like lots of freckles but who cares it’s just mysterious high school freckles.
Flashbacks:
Panther and Sena:
2002 – Hanging out by the river bank after practice before Panther has to regroup with the others where they’re staying. Sena’s soulmate mark is on his right leg and looks like cascading roses except more impressionist since the mark is still forming. Panther’s looks like chrysanthemums following a similar pattern on his right leg. At the time they think it’s kind of weird, but don’t over think it. Sena’s dad told him that most people develop one in high school and he has something like he and his best friend have stuff like that on their arms.
2002 – Sena asks Panther for his number after the cat incident, but Panther doesn’t have a cellphone yet. He does have e-mail and AIM, so they exchange e-mails because Sena doesn’t have AIM. By this point, their soulmate marks seem more like flowers than birthmarks, but they’re still underdeveloped.
2009/2010 – Panther and Sena meet up to celebrate New Years and Sena’s belated birthday since they’re finally both living in the states now (even if it’s an almost four hour plane ride apart), end up deciding that they’re dating. They have a good idea what they’re getting in though because they’ve been long distance friends with a fourteen hour time zone difference so at least now they can more feasibly see each other when they don’t have football commitments
Kid and Tetsuma
2006 – Kid, being the only son of a noble family was going through arranged marriage hell. Texted Tetsuma, “Save me,” both kind of half jokingly, half for serious. So Tetsuma shows up in nice clothing (because Kid’s always talking about how people get overly dressed up to come over to their estate) and kind of just showed up during a marriage prospect meeting, held Kid’s gaze a long moment, bowed on his knees to Kid’s parents like a good wedding prospect, and then promptly slung Kid over his shoulder, and rescued him. They’ve been together ever since. Honestly probably would have dated in high school but social pressure got in the way.
Venue:
It’s a large, sprawling ranch/inn in Wyoming. It’s large enough to accommodate everyone. There are horses to ride, a functioning farm, and a view of mountains in the distance. Everyone chipped in money to secure it not only because it was in a location the press wouldn’t bother all of them, but also because it sounded like a fun time no one could pass up. Kid and Tetsuma helped organize the whole thing so nobody would be priced out of coming especially if they had to fly from Japan or elsewhere to come.
Wedding:
The wedding is set up outdoors with everyone gathered around the altar so it’s les syour side and my side and more umbrella shaped. Kid and Tetsuma enter together, Tetsuma breaks off at a full run and Kid quick draws the bouquet, shoot it towards Tetsuma, who catches it and holds it through the whole ceremony. The ceremony is kind of a mix of typical American wedding stuff said by the ordained and then the vows are Shinto, though there is no sake. Kind of a mix of Kid and Tetsuma’s love of the wild west and their commitment to each other which follows more of a love, respect, console, help, and protect than a love, honor, cherish, and obey.
Reception:
It’s in the great hall of the ranch/inn. Lots of wild west/ranch/cowboy chic happening. Variety of food, mix of American and Japanese traditions. Kid tells the flashback about Tetsuma rescuing him from an arranged marriage. Reception ends at sunset and they ride off into the sunset together, heading to a nearby campsite to kick off whatever their honeymoon will be.

Barcelona consider U-turn on Philippe Coutinho’s future
The winter transfer window is closed, but now it’s time to look ahead to the summer! Here are the new rumours floating around Europe’s big leagues and beyond.
TOP STORY: Barcelona might do U-turn on Coutinho
Despite reports in England stating that Barcelona are willing to part with Philippe Coutinho should any cash-plus-player offers come forward, Spanish outlet Sport claims the Catalan club is still considering the option to include the Brazil international in their squad plans for next term.
2 Related
Barcelona have made no secret of the fact that they have spoken with a number of interested Premier League clubs concerning the midfielder, with a €90 million price tag reportedly set as the asking price.
Manager Quique Setien is said to be exploring a number of options amid the coronavirus pandemic. But Sport’s report says it is unlikely Barcelona will manage to sell Coutinho for a figure equal to or greater than their asking price, meaning the 27-year-old’s future could yet remain at the Nou Camp.
The outlet also says Setien thinks that Coutinho adds a dynamic element to Barcelona’s game in midfield and can work as a creative player who fits in with the club’s playing style.

Bayern confident in poaching teenage talent Hepburn away from Celtic
The Sun has claimed that Scottish sensation Barry Hepburn will be targeted by Bayern Munich this summer.
• When does the transfer window reopen? • Karlsen: Possible coronavirus impact • Best ever transfers: 100-51 | 50-1 • This summer’s top free agents • January transfer grades • Latest completed major transfers
The 16-year-old Celtic winger, who still has another year left to run on his youth registration with the Hoops, is believed to have rejected a professional contract with Neil Lennon’s side — much to their frustration.
German giants Bayern are now reportedly closing in on securing the teenager’s services, with the Bundesliga club confident an agreement can be reached this summer.
Dalbert and Biraghi are caught in the middle
Fiorentina will look to purchase Dalbert from Inter Milan this summer after being impressed by the left-back’s efforts while on loan this season, but permanent contract negotiations are likely to hit stumbling blocks, suggests Calciomercato.
That’s because Cristiano Biraghi, currently on loan at Inter Milan from Fiorentina, was effectively part of a loan swap when Dalbert joined La Viola temporarily last summer. The Italian outlet says Fiorentina and Inter were due to meet this month to discuss the future of both players, but that meeting had to be canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The report adds that Fiorentina’s wish to buy Dalbert outright from Inter Milan will be made easier should Inter chief Antonio Conte choose to add Biraghi to his squad. Both clubs are expected to reopen negotiations in the coming months, with all scenarios reportedly still open to negotiations.
Tap-ins
— Southampton are open to selling out-of-favour Norway winger Mohamed Elyounoussi this summer, and are likely to demand at least £8m for his signature from interested clubs. Celtic are one club interested in the 25-year-old, with Real Sociedad also keen to lure Elyounoussi away from St Mary’s.
— AC Milan are hunting for a new goalkeeper after confirming Pepe Reina is unlikely to be part of the club’s plans next season. A report by Calciomercato says Reina’s €3m-per-year contract at the San Siro is taking too much out of Inter boss Conte’s wage budget.

U.S., Mexico expectations for Friday’s friendly? Test their next waves of talent for bigger tests to come
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Friday’s friendly at MetLife Stadium between the U.S. and Mexico doesn’t come with a ton of emotional baggage or themes of revenge. The historic animosity between longtime rivals is present, but both sides will be looking to get something a bit more meaningful out of their latest friendly.
ESPN’s Tom Marshall and Noah Davis preview the match from both perspectives.
U.S. point of view: Biggest test yet for the “kids”
The point of sport is to win, of course, but perhaps it’s also to learn. That’s especially true for a national team, who plays endless friendlies that present learning opportunities intermingled with the qualifiers and tournaments in which victory is always the ultimate objective. When the USMNT takes the field against Mexico on Friday, a rematch in name if not in reality off the back of El Tri‘s 1-0 Gold Cup final win in July, U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter will be seeking forward momentum more than balls in the back of the net.
“A very consistent theme since we’ve been together is to just keep progressing,” he said in the lead-up to the game. “We got to a certain point in the Gold Cup. We want to analyze where we got to, and now can we build on that in this next game, in this next phase?”
– Berhalter: Dest will start vs. Mexico – O’Hanlon: Dest is proof of U.S. progress in developing talent
Continuing to build on “that,” the style and philosophy Berhalter brought to the team after his December 2018 hire would be a welcome sight for American fans who watched the squad flounder in an awkward limbo for a half-decade. Early returns have been decent if not spectacular, most notably a strong Gold Cup in which the Americans dominated until they didn’t and never looked overmatched.
Against Mexico (and Uruguay in St. Louis on Tuesday), Berhalter has close to a full-strength roster — Tyler Adams, DeAndre Yedlin, Tim Weah and Matt Miazga are missing due to injury — and 180 minutes to test ideas, theories and combinations. “Every player on the team is a puzzle piece,” said defender Aaron Long, one of the last year’s biggest success stories.
Berhalter’s goal over this break is simply to see what the next wave of talent has to offer as well as give more thought to where Pulisic fits best in this U.S. team.
The most important puzzle piece is where Christian Pulisic best fits. It’s not a new conundrum. Both Jurgen Klinsmann and Bruce Arena tried — and succeeded/failed in equal measure — to figure out where to play the American’s most dynamic attacker. Berhalter’s choice about Pulisic will dictate a great deal of the rest of the formation. The Chelsea acquisition is listed as a forward on the latest roster, as opposed to the midfield role he occupied in the pre-Gold Cup releases. This might mean that the coach sees his young star playing farther up the field, likely out on a wing with Josh Sargent in the middle, or it might mean that Pulisic will play farther back and that an “F” or an “M” next to his name means little.
It’s also a chance to continue integrating the next generation into the national team.
“The youth wave for the U.S. is coming,” FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon said. “I feel like I’m having gray hairs in the back of my head at 21. I don’t know why. But I’m always excited about this youth.”
The fact is simple: a roster comprised of American players 24 and under would be the favorite to beat a starting XI of guys 25 and up. Making this transition as seamlessly as possible needs to be a priority. Mexico and Uruguay, two quality but beatable sides, present wonderful opportunities to find out who of the newer crew can hang in Berhalter’s proactive style.
The coach understands this. He knows how valuable the games, and the trainings are for the future prospects. For example, there’s a shot for Atlanta United FC center-back Miles Robinson. “It’s a chance for us to get an up-close look at him,” Berhalter said. “We know he has the physical talent. We know he’s a competitor. We know he’s had a great season so far for Atlanta. It’s nice to get him in our environment and see how he can adapt to our style of play.” It’s high praise for the 22-year-old, and Berhalter could offer similar sentiments about at least a half dozen players in camp.
2022 World Cup qualifying begins in roughly a year. The process, as always, continues.
— Noah Davis
Mexico point of view: Stay perfect under Martino
A victory for Mexico over the United States in a noncompetitive game would exorcise the stat that El Tri hasn’t defeated the Stars and Stripes in a friendly since 1999. Also at stake is Mexico head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s undefeated record in his first 10 games in charge.
Obviously, the Gold Cup final was the big one for the rivalry and a victory for the U.S. wouldn’t change that or bring much in the way of revenge. In fact, it would possibly fuel the perception — at least for El Tri fans — that Mexico tends to be the team that wins when it matters. The stats in games since 2000 may be 14 wins, eight losses and six draws but in official competition, Mexico has won eight of the past 15 games (8-6-1).
Mexico does head into this game as a significant favorite. Martino has 31 players in camp and the return of Hector Herrera, Jesus “Tecatito” Corona, Javier Hernandez, Hirving Lozano and Miguel Layun means that El Tri is much stronger than it was during the Gold Cup. The victory over the U.S. in the final came without arguably Mexico’s best two players (Herrera, Lozano) and the national team’s all-time top scorer (Hernandez). Martino himself said “we will be better” after the Gold Cup final and referenced those absentees.
– Martino brings strong Mexico squad to U.S.
The big question mark is which starting XI Martino will put out on Friday given the number of players in his squad and a game against Argentina coming up on Tuesday in San Antonio. More than the result, Martino will be looking closely at what those returning players can bring.
Martino is thought to be delighted with the progress of the younger players, particularly at how they have adopted his methods. The thinking is that Mexico will play the group stage of the CONCACAF Nations League (Bermuda, Panama) with the younger group, with a few of the more experienced players sprinkled in. Therefore, these games against the U.S. and Argentina will be used by Martino to figure out which players of the Europe-based players will be best suited for CONCACAF Nations league action.
For example, there seems to be little point in bringing both Raul Jimenez and Hernandez to play away against Bermuda given that one is guaranteed to be on the bench in Martino’s 4-3-3 system. (It’ll probably be one of Andres Guardado or Erick Gutierrez.) Equally, the Pulisic vs. Lozano angle — mainly pushed in the Spanish-language media — may not have any legs given both aren’t exactly the most brash personalities willing to trash-talk, but it will nevertheless be of interest to see two of CONCACAF’s best attacking on the same field and on opposite teams. Having such quality has to be good for the rivalry, especially given both are now playing for European clubs that are expected to be fighting for titles.
Lastly, this should be an entertaining game. Mexico has usually been the protagonist in this rivalry in terms of having the ball and taking the game to the U.S., something that’s continued under Martino’s aggressive style, but with Berhalter as coach, it seems like Stars and Stripes are now looking to play more front-foot soccer, meaning there should be plenty of space for the attacking talents on both teams to shine.

Yucatán- Week 5
All of the communities in Emily’s route have either launched or finished their CBIPS!
In Tixcacaltuyub, Gerardo, Lily, and Melissa worked very hard all week to collaborate with the community on several fundraising events for the community meeting palapa. Luckily Tixca has been able to earn enough money to purchase all of the necessary materials and services for the palapa. The partner agency, La Fundación de Haciendas del Mundo Maya, is supporting the project with an architect who is designing the palapa, and the construction will begin this next week.
Itzincab had a successful club marathon where they held makeup classes, English classes, and a movie club. The participants in Itzincab, Sam and Daniel, had an awesome time this week going on a city-wide scavenger hunt in Mérida to find all of the materials for the clubs with two community members! Sam and Daniel helped create a schedule for the next six months and worked hard to ensure the sustainability of the project so that the clubs will continue long after they leave.
In Xcanchakan, Isabel and Annamaria also went on a journey to buy construction materials in Mérida for their community’s bus stop, which included sheets of tin roof, wood, wire, and nails. Once the girls returned back to community, construction began just five minutes after the materials were unloaded from the truck, and the entire bus stop was finished three days later. Xcanchakan is very excited to now have a more comfortable place to wait for transportation, one that protects from the strong sun and frequent rain.
Finally, in San Antonio Chun, Daily and Jessica worked with the local youth to organize the final construction of seating surrounding six trees around the community’s sports field, which will provide shade and comfort to spectators. The girls had a great time painting the seating with the youth in San Antonio Chun a few days ago!
Overall the participants are going to miss their communities a lot, but many are looking forward to returning home to be reunited with their families.
CHICHIMILA Taylor and Cora this week got their materials for the Project! And as soon as they got them they started working. The community project is about the improvement of the public spaces inside the community. They will work fixing and painting the plaza. It is also part of the project the creation of 2 murals. One of them is about the unity of Chichimilá empowering diversity and to feel proud of their identity, and the other is about the importance of recycling and having a clean community. A few days ago with the youth they finished the first mural and they are all super excited!
TIXHUALACTUN After receiving the rest of the materials this past Tuesday, Sofie, Sanna and the committee started crafting the trash cans. The community project is working on setting a trashed recollection system, which include building trash cans and putting them, and also promoting and talking with the community members about the importance of recycling and taking care of the environment. They are collecting signatures in order to ask in Valladolid Municipality to have the trash recollection system, and they are talking with the community about how much having the system will benefit the community.
TEKOM Tekom has done a great job this week. They went to buy their materials and they have already started working! They have done the first activity planed which was cleaning the Cenote. All the youth are really excited about the project moreover now that they have the materials. They are fully supported by the municipality too. They will clean and paint the local plazas, which will create a better space for community members to spend time together.
DZITNUP Carina, Lesley and the youth group have made some great advances with the project this week. On Monday they got the rest of their materials for the CBIP. They are all really excited about the project of fixing and improving the soccer field. They even get support from the municipality which will pay for the builders. They started building the fence around the field and these days they are going to be painting. It something all the community is really excited, and especially the youth.
All of the CBIPs are progressing quickly in these last weeks in community and the participants are finally getting the satisfaction of seeing all of the hard work they did with the community come to fruition! In Yalcobá (Shayna and Kayla), the CBIP is almost finished; the community has already laid the cement floor in the structure and is halfway done laying the cement for the pathway out of the cemetery. The only things left to do are finishing the pathway and affixing the new gate to the entrance! In Chechmil (Emma and Ashley), the community members have just started putting up the posts for the fence around the church and have also already taken out the old dangerous play structures in preparation for the new ones from the Bevil Grant. In X-Cohuo (Sari, Carmen, and Jack), the community has already put up the posts for the fence around the clinic and only needs to affix the chain link fencing to the posts. In Sisbicchen (Helen and Patricia), the weeds have been cleared and the community organized a day of plant donations and planting for the community garden. All that is left to be done is to put up the fence around the area to keep out the animals!
This has been a fantastic last week in communities for Shayan’s route!
Starting in Chibilub, Eduardo and Elian had the opportunity to visit an ancient Mayan ruin in the jungle behind their community where they found a well filled with sleeping bats, caterpillars as big as their arms, and the highest point in their region with an ancient Mayan altar. They have also had two extremely successful workshops in regards to their project where the women in the community have come together to weave their hammocks together and share techniques/designs. And the best part, they all stayed an extra 3 hours because it was such a great way for the community to come together! They are making the most of their last week in community and have been spending time with all the youngsters that have filled their summer days and the teenagers who make their soccer-filled nights all types of fun!
In Muchucuxcáh, the participants Clarissa and Sharon have begun the construction of their project of a community center and are waiting to paint it and put cement floors before it will be completed and become a beautiful area for the community to have refuge from the sun or rain while still having an outdoor space to be together! They are practicing a salsa dance every day with their host family to prepare for a performance during their despedida, which will take place in the newly built community center. Also, for their last extracurricular activity they held a water themed activity in the local pool (that only goes up to their knees) with almost all of the youth they’ve gotten close with this summer! On Sunday, the community is throwing a big despedida party for them all and they will say their goodbyes to the community before heading to debriefing on Tuesday.
The trio in San Diego of Vivian, Sara, and Ariana have had a fantastic last week in community filled with soccer and basketball games with all of the local youth. The partners spend their days hanging out with the local youth in the community playing cards, sports, or other games the youth invented for themselves. During meal time, they have been arriving early to help the women make tortillas and learn to weave hammocks, which connects directly to their microenterprise project. They are nervous to say goodbye to their community and cannot believe the project has already come to a close and now realize that 5 weeks is truly a short amount of time to live with a new group of people!
In Popola, Lesly, Athena, and Jesus traveled to Valladolid and bought books for the community library! The windows for the Molino center will be installed on Tuesday. Abril, Valeria, Mattie, Arturo, Angelis, and Laura, along with the large population of children in the Kancabdzonot are patiently awaiting the arrival of their new park. For now, they’re staying busy sanding and painting the benches of the park. Christian and Gerson have been working hard every day with Luis, Sitlali, Johnny, Graceli, and numerous others to paint the community park and monument, and plant trees. A local electrician starts working tomorrow to install lighting throughout the park and towards the monument. In Chimay, materials have arrived to begin construction on the cement flooring for the park. Lots of community members have committed to donating time and labor this weekend to get started! Communities and participants are diligently working together to finish projects and affirm sustainability plans, before their upcoming despedida in the Centro Cultural Comunitario on August 8th. Lots of tears were shed this week reflecting on their time shared together, and much more wait for Tuesday!

Kobe Bryant left deep legacy in LA sports, basketball world
LOS ANGELES — Kobe Bryant inspired a generation of basketball players worldwide with sublime skills and an unquenchable competitive fire.
He earned Los Angeles’ eternal adoration during his two decades as the fierce soul of the beloved Lakers, and he was respected by basketball fans from every place with a hoop and a dream, including his native Philadelphia and in Italy, his other childhood home.
Less than four years into his retirement, Bryant was seizing new challenges and working to inspire his daughters’ generation through sports and storytelling when his next chapter ended shockingly early.
Bryant, the 18-time All-Star who won five NBA championships and became one of the greatest basketball players of his generation during a 20-year career all with the Lakers, died in a helicopter crash Sunday. He was 41.
The crash occurred in the foggy hills above Calabasas, California, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Bryant was killed, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press, and a different person familiar with the case confirmed Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna also died.
Both of the AP’s unnamed sources spoke on condition of anonymity because few details of the crash had been released publicly.
Authorities said nine people were on the helicopter, and all were presumed dead. No names were released.
Bryant lived south of Los Angeles in coastal Orange County, and he often used helicopters to save time and avoid Southern California’s notorious traffic. He traveled to practices and games by helicopter before his playing career ended in 2016. He continued to use them after retirement as he attended to his new ventures, which included a burgeoning entertainment company that recently produced an Academy Award-winning animated short film.
The basketball world and Los Angeles reacted with an outpouring of pain and disbelief. Bryant is all but certain to be elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this year, when he is eligible for the first time.
“For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “He was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are legendary … but he will be remembered most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability.”
The crash occurred about 20 miles from Mamba Sports Academy, Bryant’s basketball training complex in Newbury Park, California. A youth basketball tournament — the Mamba Cup — was scheduled for a second day of competition Sunday at the facility, and Bryant had attended the opening day Saturday with Gianna.
Bryant and his wife, Vanessa, had four daughters. He had been a vocal booster of women’s sports since his retirement, coaching and mentoring basketball players around the world while also backing women’s soccer and other endeavors.
Bryant retired as the third-leading scorer in NBA history with 33,643 points, all scored in Lakers purple and gold. The self-nicknamed Black Mamba was a prolific, gifted shooter with a sublime all-around game and a relentless, hard-edged work ethic that thrilled his fans and almost everyone else, even those who reviled him.
Taking cues from Michael Jordan, one of his idols, Bryant played with a swagger that compelled him to talk trash, to guard the toughest opponents, to play through pain and to demand the ball at the biggest moments of games.
He didn’t always hit them, but Bryant never stopped trying.
“He had zero flaws offensively,” LeBron James said Saturday night. “Zero. You backed off of him, he could shoot the 3. You body him up a little bit, he could go around you. He could shoot from mid-range. He could post. He could make free throws. … He was just immortal offensively because of his skill set and his work ethic.”
Bryant held the No. 3 spot in the league scoring ranks until the day before his death, when James passed him during the Lakers’ game in Philadelphia.
On Saturday night, James said he was “happy just to be in any conversation with Kobe Bean Bryant, one of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play. One of the all-time greatest Lakers.”
Bryant always reacted graciously to the achievements of James, his former on-court rival who joined the Lakers in 2018.
“Continuing to move the game forward @KingJames,” Bryant wrote in his last tweet. “Much respect my brother.”
Tim Duncan, the San Antonio Spurs great who also retired in 2016, is also expected to be part of the Hall of Fame class that will be announced at the NBA’s All-Star weekend next month. Duncan, now a Spurs assistant, was visibly emotional on the bench during their game against Toronto on Sunday.
Bryant had been spending more time with his daughters since leaving the league. The Bryants’ first daughter, Natalia, turned 17 a week ago. Bianka Bella Bryant is 3 years old, and Capri Kobe Bryant was born last June.
Gianna, better known as Gigi, had a promising youth career and a competitive pugnaciousness that reminded everybody of her dad. Bryant sat with her courtside at a Brooklyn Nets game late last year, clearly passing along his wisdom to his daughter.
Bryant told Jimmy Kimmel in 2018 that Gianna wanted to play in the WNBA and recalled how fans would often approach him saying “you gotta have a boy, you gotta someone to carry on the tradition, the legacy.”
Gianna took exception: “She’s like, ‘Oy, I got this,’” Bryant recalled.
News of Bryant’s death inspired an outpouring of grief around the sports world and beyond, but it was felt particularly painfully in Los Angeles, where Bryant was unquestionably the sprawling city’s most popular athlete and one of its most beloved people. Buildings from downtown to Los Angeles International Airport were illuminated in Lakers purple and gold.
The Lakers’ next game is Tuesday night against the crosstown rival Clippers, but hundreds of fans — many in Bryant jerseys and Lakers gear — spontaneously gathered at Staples Center and in the surrounding LA Live entertainment complex on Sunday, weeping and staring at video boards with Bryant’s image before the Grammy awards ceremony.
“I thought he was going to live forever,” Lakers great Magic Johnson told KCBS-TV. “I thought he was invincible. … There was nobody who took more pride in putting on that Laker uniform than Kobe. Nobody. He was just special. We will miss him and we’ll remember him for his greatness, but let’s not forget how he impacted the world, too.”
Bryant retired as the Lakers’ franchise leader in points, games played, 3-pointers and steals — no small feats on a franchise that has employed many of the greatest players in basketball history.
The NBA kept its games on as scheduled when the news broke. The Spurs and Raptors both took voluntary 24-second shot clock violations at the start of their game in honor of Bryant, who wore No. 24 for the second half of his career.
Several other teams followed up by deliberately taking delays of 24 and 8 seconds, honoring both of his jersey numbers. Many players were seen crying before their games, and James looked emotional on the tarmac when he got off the Lakers’ team plane from Philadelphia.
Bryant’s future appeared to be limitless in retirement, whether in sports or entertainment. He opened a production company shortly after leaving the Lakers, saying he was just as passionate about storytelling as he had been about his sport. He won an Oscar in 2018 for his contributions to “Dear Basketball, ” an animated short about his relationship to the game. He also produced content for ESPN.
In 2003, Bryant was charged with attacking a 19-year-old employee at a Colorado resort. He had said the two had consensual sex, and the charge was eventually dropped when the women declined to testify in a trial. The woman later filed a civil suit against Bryant that was settled out of court.
Bryant went on to become one of the NBA’s most popular players and the face of the Lakers. Winning a record four NBA All-Star Game MVP awards, he was the overall league MVP in 2008 and a two-time NBA scoring champion, but he also earned 12 selections to the NBA’s All-Defensive teams.
He teamed with Shaquille O’Neal in a combustible partnership to lead the Lakers to NBA titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He later teamed with Pau Gasol to win two more titles in 2009 and 2010.
A two-time Olympic gold medalist with the dominant U.S. team, Bryant retired in 2016 after scoring 60 points in his final NBA game. In December 2017, the Lakers hung banners retiring his No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys in the Staples Center rafters in an unprecedented double honor.
Bryant looms large over the current generation of NBA players, most of whom grew up either idolizing Bryant or absorbing his work ethic and competitive spirit in the same way Bryant’s generation learned from Jordan. Bryant exemplified and passed on that mentality to James, Stephen Curry and the NBA’s current wave of high-scoring superstars.
After James passed Bryant on Saturday, he remembered listening in awe to Bryant when the superstar came to speak at a childhood basketball camp.
“I remember one thing he said: If you want to be great at it, or want to be one of the greats, you’ve got to put the work in,” said James, who later teamed up with Bryant on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team in Beijing.
Bryant was a basketball superstar for his entire adult life, and he grew up from a teenager to a respected veteran in the unforgiving Hollywood spotlight.
He entered the NBA draft straight out of suburban Philly’s Lower Merion High School in 1996 after a childhood spent partly in Italy, where his father, former NBA player Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, played professionally. Bryant was occasionally estranged from his now-65-year-old father, but reconciled.
Bryant spoke four languages and played a major role in the NBA’s international growth over his two decades in the league, traveling the world and connecting with athletes in other sports and celebrities.
The Lakers acquired the 17-year-old Bryant in a trade shortly after Charlotte drafted him, and he immediately became one of the most exciting and intriguing players in the sport alongside O’Neal, who had signed with the Lakers as a free agent. Bryant won the Slam Dunk Contest as a rookie, and the Lakers gradually grew into a team that won three consecutive championships.
Bryant and Gasol, the Spanish star, formed the nucleus of another championship team in 2008, reaching three straight NBA Finals and winning two more titles.
Between those title runs and before the quiet final years of his career, Bryant accomplished innumerable feats including an 81-point game against Toronto in January 2006. Bryant’s final NBA seasons were dogged by injuries, but he still went into retirement with that jaw-dropping 60-point performance against Utah.
