serotonin machine broke
Resources:
National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255
North Carolina Crisis Line: 1-919-231-4525
The Trevor Project: 1-866-488-7386
There are also text and chat options online, and I highly encourage anyone needing support to reach out to friends, family, or the hotlines if you’re in a bad place.
At the beginning of the semester, when our Branding of Me professor told us we were going to have to write 2 blogs a week, I thought barely anything of it. 2 posts a week? Writing about myself? Easy.
Turns out, it's not as easy as I thought. Like anyone else, I have stories to tell and opinions I like to share, but putting myself on blast for everyone on the web to see is so much harder than I originally anticipated. Despite my efforts to engage with people in person or online, I find that my day-to-day interactions are very surface-level, and never breach the personal, and for good reason. I'm actually a pretty closed-off person, and like to be left alone for the most part.
Although I say I seek comfort in isolation, it has been proven over and over to be a major cause of death across all ages. It is comparable to the mortality rate of smoking, and twice as deadly as obesity. If you thought this blog was gonna go in a different direction, you're wrong.
My personal serotonin machine is broken. Not sure if it came faulty, or it gradually wore down from overuse, but it ain't working right now, nor has it worked since high school.
Talking about mental health without making self-deprecating jokes about depression and suicide is difficult for me, but it has to be done. I've been struggling with a number of problems, and it's recently taken a toll for the worse, resulting in inpatient hospitalization this past week. It was a highly embarrassing low point for me, one that I had gone through before many years ago, but did not expect to happen again. One of the leading factors for it happening was loneliness.
I don't know if it's because of my brain, or because I'm shy, but the cycle of depression and self-isolation is a common one, and not just for me. It's an unfortunate pattern, where depression fuels isolation, and isolation in turn worsens depression, or the other way around, depending on where you begin- depressed, or lonely. It'll be both one way or another.
Eventually, this can lead to problems like self-harm, substance abuse, even going as far as suicide.
Logically, my brain understands that turning down offers of hanging out and cancelling plans is worse for me during these times, but I can't help it. It becomes difficult to flash my customer-service smile all day, much less be an active participant in conversations. It's a lot easier to lay in bed and contemplate the meaning of life alone, despite how it negatively impacts things in the long-term.

Vulnerability inspires connection and change, though, and that is something that is reaffirmed almost every time I open up to someone. For a couple of years, I took part in Carolina United, a program that fosters dialogue about diversity on campus. In a week's time, during which we share our personal stories and discuss avenues for bringing positive change to campus, I've heard countless personal stories and have shared my own. It's during these moments of vulnerability that connections are sparked, and you feel closer for knowing things that otherwise may never be shared.
Problem is, I seek isolation during my worst times, when my brain refuses to do its thing and keep me feeling alright. My friendships, connections and accompanying support systems go out the window, often for months when I withdraw purposefully. This leaves little room for other feel-good tricks. Sometimes, certain coping mechanisms can help, but during times of emotional distress, writing down happy thoughts or drawing for fun does nothing to keep me from falling into a cycle of self-destructive habits, which include browsing social media, cutting, and often combining prescription medication with alcohol to numb feelings. Funnily enough, it's the social media that makes things worse- the rest make me feel better.
Suicide is the tenth most common cause of death in the US, and loneliness is a major contributing factor. Personally, if you told me I would be dealing with a sudden spike in suicidal thoughts due to loneliness (*among other things*) I would've probably laughed. I have a significant number of friends on Facebook and Instagram who I interact with relatively frequently: how can I be lonely? Turns out, with the increasing prevalence of social media comes the loneliness epidemic, with younger generations the primary target for depression to hit due to negative social media experiences. The direct correlation of depression linked to loneliness from social media use is not offset by any positive interactions over the web, making the problem a persistent and ugly one.
Forbes has an amazing article and infographic outlining this epidemic. There are countless articles out there that discuss this problem- I’m only linking a small percent of them. Negative social media interactions worsen mental health.
By negative interactions, the studies don't mean active harassment or bullying. People find themselves lost in comparing themselves to others, even while fully knowing that social media only highlights the good and hides the ugly. Regardless, loneliness increases through social media use, and like the depression-isolation cycle, the use of social media increases the more lonely someone feels.
I can't say for certain how much of a correlation social media use has to do with my suicidal feelings, but it's definitely not been helping. Even my art account on Instagram, where I follow a plethora of artists I'm inspired by, makes me feel worse to scroll through. Facebook, with the constant posts of starting jobs and grad school acceptances, is a place I try to avoid but keep getting sucked back into. LinkedIn is similar, and Twitter is mostly the news for me, which is just a whole different avenue of negativity altogether.
I don't want to sound like a stereotypical old person, as I am only 23, but there is so much more value in face-to-face interaction than any online one. It inspires connection, allows us to open up to others and get to know them (and ourselves) better, and it helps break the pattern of social isolation and depression, even if just for a little while. That's not to say texting is pointless, but a physical proximity to someone tears down the walls that phone screens build, and I am a firm believer that we should all make our best efforts to try to keep in contact by means other than just texting. It sounds hypocritical, of course, but I can't deny the fact that grabbing lunch or seeing someone in person makes me feel eons better than receiving a text from them.
If you know anyone close to you who may be struggling with depression and/or suicidal thoughts, I'd like to encourage you to reach out to them, and maybe make some lunch plans or grab coffee. Go bowling. Do an activity. Insist on it. They may not feel up to it, but social interaction does wonders to the isolated and depressed brain, and it may just end up saving a life. One interaction can make way to more, and give someone an avenue to reach out for help and take their life back into their hands.
I will personally start reaching out to my friends, and making attempts to re-connect after my long period of isolation. It may be slow and it definitely will not be easy, and I may fail, but I'd rather try to break out of this cycle and help my serotonin machine start working again than not be alive to give it that chance.

Do You Need a Prescription to Buy a CPAP Machine, Mask or Supplies?
New Post has been published on https://depression-md.com/do-you-need-a-prescription-to-buy-a-cpap-machine-mask-or-supplies/
Do You Need a Prescription to Buy a CPAP Machine, Mask or Supplies?
In short, Yes. If you’re going through your insurance company, preferred Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider, or online retailer, you’ll need a valid prescription to purchase a CPAP machine, a complete CPAP mask, and a CPAP humidifier.
From there, it can get a little complicated.
Navigating the world of CPAP therapy, insurance coverage, and prescription requirements can be daunting. Here at CPAP.com, though, we’ve been connecting people with the information and supplies they need for healthy and successful sleep apnea therapy for over twenty years.
Regulations have changed quite a bit in that time, and there’s a lot of confusion around CPAP prescriptions because of it. This guide should help clear up any confusion or misconceptions you may have about your CPAP prescription, and why it’s important to have one.
We’ll also cover ways you can obtain a prescription, detail some important things you should know about the process, and even offer resources for tracking down an old prescription you might have.
Let’s jump into why you can’t purchase a CPAP machine without a prescription, and why it is crucial to have one.
Why Do You Need a Prescription for CPAP Equipment?
CPAP machines, masks, and humidifiers are classified and regulated by the FDA as Class II medical devices, which means a valid prescription is required for a legal sale to take place. In 2018, the FDA reclassified CPAP machines from Class III to Class II in an effort to spur innovation for a better user experience by relaxing regulatory burdens.
Sleep apnea can be a very difficult condition to adequately assess and treat because there are several different underlying issues that could be at play depending on the type of apnea events you experience. By working with a healthcare professional you’ll be prescribed the exact treatment and equipment you need to improve your quality of life.
Can I Get a CPAP Machine Without a Prescription?
As stated above, the FDA regulates CPAP machines and requires companies that sell these therapy devices to require a prescription from anyone intending to purchase one. To be clear, you cannot purchase a CPAP machine without a valid prescription from an appropriately licensed medical professional.
Luckily, you can get tested for sleep apnea and receive a valid prescription for your CPAP equipment all from the comfort of your own home. Visit our home sleep test for more details!
Can I Get CPAP Supplies Without a Prescription?
While a prescription is required for machines, masks, and humidifiers, you do not need a prescription to purchase CPAP supplies such as replacement mask parts, tubing/hoses (with the exception of some heated tubing), external batteries/power supplies, or filters for your machine.
CPAP accessories such as fabric wraps, aromatherapy bundles, CPAP pillows, and chinstraps can also be purchased without a prescription.
If you’re really savvy, you’ll find that you can typically even piece together a mask, or get pretty darn close, by searching for the mask parts individually.
To make this even easier, if you’re wondering whether or not you need a prescription for a certain piece of equipment, simply search for it on our website! Every single product that requires a prescription for purchase will have an icon under the ‘Add to Cart’ button that states “Prescription Required”.
Why Is It Important to Get a CPAP Prescription?
For a successful and healthy sleep therapy experience, a prescription is key.
Your CPAP prescription will tell you:
Your prescription is crucial in treating you based on the recommendations from your sleep study as made by your sleep specialist or doctor. A prescription turns the insights from your sleep test into an actionable way forward, giving you access to successful treatment.
How to Get a CPAP Prescription
Acquiring a CPAP prescription can be a pretty involved process, and it’s not so straightforward as simply asking your doctor for a prescription.
First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss your sleep health to rule out other underlying conditions. Your doctor can then write you a prescription for a sleep study that you’ll participate in. After reviewing the results of your sleep study, your doctor can write you a prescription for a CPAP machine if necessary.
To get a CPAP prescription, follow the steps below:
Schedule an Appointment to Discuss Your Sleep With Your Doctor. Express Interest in Participating in a Sleep Study.
You’ll Setup the Test, and Fall Asleep as You Normally Would.
Your Results Will Then Be Sent to Your Doctor.
Your Doctor Will Write a Prescription Based on Your Sleep Study.
Can I Get a CPAP Prescription Online?
An exciting new option in the digital age is to have a sleep study conducted in the comfort of your own home! Our at-home sleep apnea test involves a consultation with a real doctor and is a great way to get a CPAP prescription online.
At-home sleep studies are not as comprehensive and cannot diagnose Central Sleep Apnea, but they’re perfectly capable of determining whether you’re a candidate for sleep apnea therapy based on your indicators for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Our home sleep test can prescribe you with an APAP machine directly, but others may require you to take your results to your primary care doctor in order for them to write you an appropriate prescription.
Who Can Write a CPAP Prescription?
To receive a CPAP prescription, you can make an appointment with your:
Medical Doctor (MD)
Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)
Psychiatrist (MD Only)
Physicians Assistant (PA)
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Dentist
Naturopathic Physicians
Prescriptions written by the following medical practitioners are not accepted:
Chiropractor
Podiatrist
Optometrist
Psychologist
Registered Nurse (RN)
Respiratory Caregivers
Medical Assistants
While your prescription can simply be written on a standard prescription pad, we also offer a General Prescription Form to send to your prescribing physician.
What Does My Prescription Need to Say?
There are quite a few things that need to be on your CPAP prescription, and if you have the wrong phrases in the wrong places, it could affect your ability to get the right equipment for your needs. To help simplify this, we’ve gathered a list of everything your prescription needs to have on it.
Here are a few basic requirements of any prescription for any CPAP equipment:
Your physician’s contact information/NPI
Your physician’s signature
The patient’s full name
The Date of the Order
Length of Need
Diagnosis
How Long Is My Prescription Valid?
Some prescriptions for a CPAP machine have a finite expiration date or can be valid for life as judged by how many “refills” your doctor writes on the prescription.
If your prescription states that it is valid for a “lifetime,” then you are able to use it as many times as you need (this is also expressed as PRN, LON, 99, or 99 months). However, many prescriptions will have an “X” number of refills, meaning if it states five refills, then you will have to see your doctor again on your sixth. Some prescriptions may also have a “valid until” date, which means it cannot be used after the expiration date.
How Do I Track Down My Old Prescription?
At CPAP.com, we can help you to track down any old prescriptions you may have. To do so, we will send a message to your doctor’s office to ask them for the prescription you have on file.
If you’d like some assistance getting an old prescription from your doctor, give us a call at 1-800-356-5221 (M-F 8a-8p CST, Sat 8a-5p CST), or email us at [email protected].
If your doctor needs help with writing a valid prescription for a CPAP machine, mask, or humidifier, we can tell them what topics need to be covered in order for CPAP.com to be able to process the order.
You also can find your previous doctor and contact his or her office. Just search the doctor’s name or practice name online, and give them a call to see if they still have it and if it is still valid.
If you previously worked with another DME, there’s a chance you can get the prescription from them as they should still have it on file. The previous DME can release your old prescription to you, and you can send it to us.
Where Can I Purchase CPAP Equipment?
Once you’ve secured your prescription, you can be on your way to acquiring the supplies you need to get started with your sleep apnea therapy.
The two main ways you can get your CPAP equipment are:
Going through insurance can be stressful for some, and there’s a whole other world of policies and deductibles to dive into on the matter; it’s best to get in contact with your agent to explore your options and see what’s best for you.
Simply put, your insurance provider will typically decide for you what equipment they’ll cover and what you can get.
For this reason, most people prefer to do their own shopping, and typically save money by paying out of pocket for their CPAP supplies and equipment.
To summarize, getting a prescription for sleep therapy is not only required by law but it also gives you the best chance for therapy success. By ensuring that your equipment is personalized to your needs, you’re setting yourself up for a cleaner, safer, and more effective CPAP therapy with greater peace of mind, and empowering yourself by taking control of your own healthcare.
If you decide to go through CPAP.com for your CPAP needs, we have a number of different ways for you to send your prescription information to us to make the buying process easier:
Fax your prescription, toll-free, to 866-353-2727, or internationally to 713-541-7377
Email your prescription to [email protected]
Upload your prescription via the prescriptions section of your CPAP.com account.

community resources you should try to find if you’re struggling
(this is a quick list i whipped up and i want you guys to reblog and add to it with your ideas)
note: this is based on my limited knowledge of community resources that exist generally in the USA. i’m not a professional social services provider or anything like that.
i know most of these things require applications. and i know it sucks. but i don’t think a lot of people know about these things so i’m just trying to help spread some knowledge.
general info on social services
local libraries: my dudes, libraries are the shit. sometimes library systems have social workers who can provide you with information and connect you to social services. even if they don’t, it’s a good place to start for anything you need.
government websites: this will get you started with general (but sometimes specific) information about housing, places to get food, and other things like medical care. might take some searching because government sites are not always............ well-designed or user-friendly
check if your local government has some kind of resource helpline! in king county, you can call 211 and get information on social services. your local government might have something similar.
housing
vouchers: local/state governments often offer help affording rent on the private market. i live in king county in washington state in the US. we have what are called section 8 vouchers, so i’ll use them as an example. if you have them where you live, you need to look up how to get them bc the process and exact numbers will be different. you apply for section 8 vouchers and there’s a waiting list. when you get one, you can rent from any landlord in the county who takes section 8 vouchers, and you’ll pay at least 28% of your rent but not more than 40%
subsidized housing: this type of government-funded housing means you will only pay X% of your household’s income for rent and utilities. this can include public housing which is owned and managed by the local housing authority. this also requires an application process through the local housing authority.
moderate-income housing: my county has this, and in king county, you have to contact the property management for properties on a list the county maintains to see if you qualify or how to apply. from how i understand it works in king county, property owners/managers/developers/whoever get tax breaks or something to set aside units in their buildings/complexes as low-income units for this program.
if you are a college/university student, talk to your school to see what your options are if you don’t have housing over breaks.
food
if you’re in the US, you can call: 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (1-877-842-6273) in Spanish from 7am-10pm EST.
find local food banks. if you live in a big city, there’s probably more than one.
contact local religious organizations. they might run food banks or soup kitchens. exercise reasonable care when interacting with them if you’re LGBTQ+ unless you know they’re cool.
food stamps/SNAP/WIC: the US government runs its own program, and states probably do, too. if you’re a parent (especially a cis mother) with kids, there’s extra programs to help you. there are income limits and an application process.
if you go to school, check with your school to see if they have a food bank specifically for students.
legal aid
contact your local bar organization for the free/”pro bono” services they offer. they might have income restrictions (usually around 200% of the federal poverty line, but in washington, ours tends to cap out at 400%) for pro bono lawyers who represent you. pro bono lawyers are lawyers who work in private practice but choose to take on clients at no cost to the client. HOWEVER, if you need advice on how to proceed or help filling out a document, there are usually programs where you can speak to a lawyer in person for usually an hour and get their advice.
check to see if there are non-profit legal aid organizations near you. some of them will be issue-specific. for example, i’m interning at a non-profit which only does unemployment benefits hearings. others do a wide variety of law. even if they don’t have the resources to represent you, they will be able to give you information. their websites are usually very informative.
see if your local courthouse has walk-in legal services. these services are probably run by the county or state bar and run by volunteer lawyers and assistants (who are usually law students).
if you live near a law school, they might run clinics for certain areas of law where students give advice and represent you while they are supervised by real attorneys. my law school has clinics for immigration, workers rights, and international human rights, among others. it is worth a look and a call to see if they might be able to help you.
your state or county bar association might also have videos and information on various legal issues. the law is complicated -- don’t always trust what you read on tumblr, for example. there are resources out there compiled by people who are licensed to practice law. USE THOSE.
know your rights: the ACLU has a ton of “know your rights” pamphlets, and your local bar association and local legal organizations will have a shit ton of ones specific to your area. landlords will try to fuck you over, but there are things they cannot legally do under federal law or state law (there’s such a thing as the implied warranty of habitability).
there are so many more that i don’t know about specifically or know enough about to list. there are whole organizations and departments of government that exist to provide resources and help. you don’t have to go this alone or rely on the kindness of internet strangers (who can’t be relied upon).

Don’t Lose Your Home. Fight Eviction With These 4 Strategies
A few months before the housing market began to implode, 22-year-old Alisa Daly and her boyfriend — now husband — were expecting their first child.
Working at a small trucking company in Arizona, she was close friends with the office manager, and her mother worked for the same firm. So Daly was shocked when her mom called and told Daly she was about to be laid off. Then, a few months after that, the couple’s car broke down and her boyfriend was fired when he didn’t show up for work.
“It made us feel miserable, overwhelmed, depressed and angry,” Daly says. “We couldn't get a job anywhere, doing anything. And no one would hire someone that was pregnant.”
As a renter in 2007, she was able to avoid eviction, unlike the 958,000 tenants who were evicted during the housing crisis. But she was on the precipice of a life-changing, community-altering tragedy, according to recent data compiled by the Eviction Lab, a project spearheaded by Princeton University professor Matthew Desmond with millions of dollars in support from the Gates, JPB and Ford Foundations and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Luckily, Daly, now a homeowner, negotiated a week-to-week payment plan to avoid falling behind in rent — demonstrating what experts say is your best bet if you’re facing eviction. She said dividing the rent into weekly amounts made it easier to budget for.
But when she moved to break her lease after an attempted burglary at her apartment, she also avoided any additional fees by hiring a lawyer and arguing that the landlord had violated the lease by not maintaining the apartment adequately — another option to fight an eviction proceeding.
Even as foreclosures have fallen 67% since the Great Recession, rental evictions declined only 9.6% to 898,479 in 2016, the latest year that statistics are available. And with experts growing concerned about housing affordability, particularly for renters, and wages remaining mostly stagnant, the eviction epidemic is likely to continue.
“If you live in a community that is plagued by eviction, then it is absolutely an epidemic, but it’s an epidemic that’s always been occurring,” said David Dworkin, president and CEO of the National Housing Conference and former housing policy adviser at the U.S. Treasury Department. “And if you don’t live in one of those communities, it’s an epidemic that’s been easy to ignore.”
Here’s Some General Advice on How to Stop an Eviction
Since the Eviction Lab had difficulty compiling all eviction records from some states, including New York and California, the real numbers of people evicted are likely in the millions each year. It could be your neighbor. A family member. It might even be you.
As Alisa Daly’s story shows, you could end up facing eviction through no fault of your own.
Maricopa County, Arizona, Judge Pro Tem Jeremy Rovinsky can see 100 eviction proceedings during a busy day as he does temporary time behind the bench in civil court.
“It’s very difficult for me I have to look people in the eye, people who are struggling, people who are suffering, and tell them they have to leave their home,” he says. “The worst part of my job is having go look them in the eye and say this is the law.”
So how does an eviction work?
First, it’s illegal for landlords to try to evict you by themselves by changing the locks, turning off utilities or through any other method. They must go through the court system.
In most cases, you’ll be served with a notice to vacate, after which you will go before a judge. Be aware that it’s rare for a tenant to win an eviction case for nonpayment. If the judge rules in favor of the landlord, a law enforcement officer will show up and you’ll be forced out of your home.
Although specific eviction laws vary state-by-state, there are some general things you can do if you are facing eviction due to nonpayment of rent. Below, you can see the specific time frames landlords must follow during eviction proceedings, depending on your state.
Negotiate Any Way You Can With Your Landlord or Leasing Company
Usually, it’s in your landlord’s best interest to work out a payment plan so you don’t fall too far behind on rent. For Daly, that meant a week-to-week plan, but it could even be a grace period until you get back on your feet.
But be certain you get whatever agreement you come to in writing.
“[The landlord] neither wants the headache of going to court [n]or that apartment empty,” Rovinsky says.
Documents, Documents, Documents
Depending on your state, or county, there are technicalities that could force your landlord to halt eviction proceedings. These include failure to keep up the property or any sort of retaliation for demanding the landlord follow local tenant laws.
But you’ll need plenty of evidence. Hang on to your lease and read it thoroughly — or if you lost it, pick up a copy from your local Clerk of the Court. Save emails, memos and letters from your landlord and take photos of the property.
“Pictures really are worth 1,000 words in these situations,” said Alan Mills, executive director of the Uptown People’s Law Center in Chicago. “Judges have to figure out who’s telling the truth, and the more documentation, the better chance you have.”
Find a Legal-Aid Service or Church Group Near You
With all of the fine print in each state’s landlord-tenant laws, it was difficult enough just researching this article. If you lose a job, and especially if you have a family to look after, it can be head-spinning to figure out your legal options in an eviction process.
For one, know that a landlord can never lock you out or turn off the utilities — so stay calm and figure out your next move with the help of a local legal-aid office. Most are low-cost or free, and because they focus on working with marginalized folks, they’ll likely have an expert on tenants’ rights.
Rovinsky, the Arizona judge, recently had an eviction case in which a church congregation stepped in with $500 so a tenant could afford to avoid eviction for at least that month. Sometimes it can take just a month for you to get back on your feet.
Have a Backup Plan if You Can’t Fight the Eviction
“Make a contingency plan,” Mills says. “The worst thing that can happen to anyone is having the sheriff come put your stuff out on the street.”
That means using what savings you may have to rent a cheap storage unit for a month. And make sure you have a plan to keep your kids and family in place — whether that be with relatives or a homeless shelter.
Your first step should be to call the nationwide resource assistance hotline 211.
Once you are stabilized, know that an eviction will remain on your record. So before you pay for a background check when you are looking for a new apartment or home to rent, be up front with the landlord. You could spend half a month’s rent on background checks alone if you get denied a few times, Mills said.
But don’t lose hope; nonpayment of rent is the least harmful type of eviction to have on your record.
“If landlords only rented to people who have never been evicted, there would be a lot of open property,” Rovinsky said. “It doesn’t mean you’ll never rent again or that your life is over.”
Here Are State-By-State Eviction Guidelines
These brief guidelines will help you understand the timeline and some rights you have as a tenant if you can’t pay rent on time. There are many legal variations in each jurisdiction and even by housing type — and we are not authorized to give legal advice — so we have provided contact numbers for legal-aid services and tenants’-rights groups.
These organizations should help you understand your rights better and may help fight a potential eviction.
The Penny Hoarder also analyzed eviction rates — the percentage of rental properties where tenants faced an eviction in 2016 — to show the cities with the most evictions. For context, the national eviction rate is around 2.3%.
Alabama Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Washington DC Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming
Alabama
In Alabama, the landlord must give the tenant notice and seven days to vacate unless the rental agreement is met. During that week, the tenant can pay the rent and the landlord is legally not allowed to pursue an eviction.

Montgomery — 5.82%
Gadsden — 5.53%
Hueytown — 3.76%
Tillman’s Corner — 3.76%
Mobile — 3.66%
Arizona
In Arizona, where Rovinsky hears cases, tenants have five days’ notice ahead of being evicted. But there are three ways to fight an eviction in this state: Pay the rent in full within the five days; pay the rent in full and cover any applicable late fees after five days; or, before a final judgment, pay the rent, late fees and any court costs.
Drexel Heights — 6.15%
Tucson — 6.03%

Arkansas
In Arkansas, landlords have two ways to evict you from your rental: a civil lawsuit or a criminal charge. If they pursue the former, they have to give you a three-day written notice that they will be suing you for “unlawful detainer” if you don’t vacate the property. After you receive a court summons, you have five days to object to the eviction.
In the case of a criminal charge, they will give you a 10-day notice of failure to vacate. If you don’t leave in 10 days, you’ll be charged with a misdemeanor and could be fined up to $25 for each additional day you stay.

Colorado
Like California, Colorado also provides a three-day window before landlords can move to evict a tenant. But in this state, if you pay rent within that three-day period, the landlord can’t proceed with the eviction. If the tenants move out within three days, they are still liable for rent, and if the security deposit doesn’t cover the amount owed, the landlord may sue the tenant for the difference.

Connecticut has one of the more lenient nonpayment-of-rent laws, with the tenant given a nine-day period before the landlord can begin pursuing an eviction. But after that time frame, the landlord can give a three-day notification to move out of the rental.
Then, as in other states, a judge will weigh both sides during an eviction hearing if the tenant wants to challenge the eviction.

In Washington, D.C., a landlord has to provide a 30-day window for the renter to pay rent in full with an official notice. But this is sometimes waived in rental agreements.
If a judge rules in favor of the landlord, the tenant has three days before removal from the property. D.C. is also a “pay-and-stay” jurisdiction, where tenants have until U.S. Marshals remove them from the rental to pay the rent and associated late fees.

Landlords in Georgia do not have to wait between notifying tenants about missing rent and filing an eviction notice. So once tenants receive a notice, they may end up in eviction court right away.
Also, Georgia law doesn’t require a written eviction notice, so a landlord can verbally serve an eviction notice. But Georgia law does allow the tenant to pay without penalty the owed rent within seven days after receiving a court summons.

Today I would like to touch base on a very sensitive issue, suicide. Included in this post is a vast amount of information and resources for those who are either contemplating it themselves or may know someone who is, so that they can get help! Suicide is a devastating act both for the person taking their life and for the ones left behind. It is truly heartbreaking when a person gets so far gone that they feel the only way out and the only way to end their suffering is by taking their own life! A lot of people think that this is a selfish act but in my opinion they would be wrong. Yes it is hurtful to know that someone would rather die than stay with us but the fact of the matter is that they are not being selfish, in fact in the minds of many suicidal people they are unburdening other people with their presence by removing the burden all together. Yes that is an extraordinarily skewed view to have on oneself unfortunately it is not uncommon... The problem is that most suicidal people do not give signs that they are considering it, so it makes it very difficult to know that someone you love or care about is feeling this way. There are some warning signs Loss of interest in what used to be favorite activities Tired all the time No interest in going out or meeting up with friends or family/creating excuses as to why they can't Potential self-harm or extremely risky behavior Giving away things that are known to be very important to them such as Animal Companions or personal memorabilia These are not all the signs and a lot of the times they won't even display these particular signs. The best you can do is monitor their behavior, if someone you know has become even more withdrawn it is time to intervene and find out what's causing the disassociation! If you or anyone you know are contemplating suicide or are battling depression and/or mental illness that leaves you feeling hopeless or despairing, please remember THERE IS HELP OUT THERE! Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and you are much too important to put yourself on the way side!!!! YOU ARE STRONGER THAN YOUR DEPRESSION! YOU ARE STRONGER THAN YOUR ILLNESS! YOU ARE WORTH FIGHTING FOR AND YOUR LIFE IS WORTH SAVING!!! I know the tunnel seems long and dark and the road seems empty and cold, but please don't give up on yourself, reach out and talk to someone! Increase Alertness Taking a cold shower in the morning, and feeling cold water pour down over our body seems more horrifying than soothing. However, the deep breathing in response to our body’s shock helps us keep warm, as it’s increases our overall oxygen intake. Thus, our heart rate will also increase, releasing a rush of blood through our entire body. This gives us a natural dose of energy for the day. Source: MedicalDaily
Stimulate Weight Loss Another way cold showers will make you look better, is by promoting fat loss.
Most people don’t know this, but there are two types of fat in your body. Brown fat & white fat. White fat is bad. It’s the body fat that we all hate so much. Brown fat is good. It’s function is to generate heat and keep your body warm.
When you take a cold shower, brown fat is activated, resulting in an increase in energy and calories burned to keep your body warm. So much so that according to this study, cold temperatures can increase brown fat by 15X the normal amount, which can result in 9 pounds of weight loss per year. Source: Menprovement
Refine Hair and Skin If you’d like to reduce the appearance of acne, cold showers could do the job. Hot water dries out your skin, while cold water tightens your cuticles and pores, preventing them from getting clogged. You can also use cold showers for shinier, more attractive hair that your partner can’t resist playing with. Cold water will close your cuticle, making it less likely dirt can accumulate in your scalp. Source: Lifehack
Build Strong Will Power The next day was more of the same, but I noticed I had more apprehension this time around before hopping in the shower. This trend continued throughout the following mornings as well. If I knew how great it made me feel, then why didn’t I eagerly throw myself underneath the icy spray? The experience reminded me of a famous old saying, one that has been attributed to a bunch of authors: “I don’t enjoy writing. I enjoy having written.” I don’t like taking cold showers, I just like the way they make me feel after I’ve already dried off.
The week has been a success, and I’ve assured myself that I will keep taking cold showers in the mornings. However, it won’t be easy. I mean, have you taken a hot shower? It’s the best. Source: Prevention
Strengthen Immunity According to a study done in 1993 by the Thrombosis Research Institute in England, individuals who took daily cold showers saw an increase in the number of virus fighting white blood cells compared to individuals who took hot showers. Researchers believe that the increased metabolic rate, which results from the body’s attempt to warm itself up, activates the immune system and releases more white blood cells in response. A Few Weeks Ago Amazon Announced Their Newest Alexa Based Product…Echo Look
I discovered this when I visited Amazon to reorder some vitamins…which I forgot to order btw. Because once I arrived I saw this:
Since I’m a huge fan of Alexa virtual assistant and I love fashion I got a little sidetracked. ‘But, no’ I thought, ‘who needs a camera powered by Alexa voice recognition to take my picture?’ I read on anyway and watched Amazon’s video. The video made some compelling arguments for why I need Echo Look. So I checked out the price….$200 and decided I’d ask for it for my birthday.
Amazon’s Video Introducing Echo Look
I explain more about why I decided I really need it a little later. But first, I need to explain why I think this product will be HUGE!
Echo Look’s Primary Function is to Take Selfies
Let’s have a show of hands…who predicted selfies would become a world wide phenomenon. I know I didn’t! In fact I’m still truly puzzled about how and why selfies became such a social epidemic.
But they did!
In case it’s not obvious to you, I’m not a huge fan of selfies. That may be in part because I’ve never really mastered taking them. All I’ve mastered is the ‘looking in the mirror’ method shown below…usually taken with an iPad
Above: Me trying to take selfies as I pack for a trip.
I know I should master taking selfies, because it couldn’t possibly be that hard. After all, everyone you see from kids to grandmas are taking them…and most people know how to take them without using their bathroom mirror! How hard could it be? But apparently it is pretty hard for someone who’s completely oblivious concerning what their best angle to be shot from is, as well as how to make those sexy facial expressions which make you look thinnner and glamorous all at once.
It’s exactly because selfies have exploded onto the world scene that I predict the new Echo Look will become huge! Ironically, selfies aren’t even the new Look’s primary purpose.
Above: Kim Kardashian’s advice on cropping to perfection
Kim Kardashian’s Guide to Taking the Perfect Selfie (Marie Claire)
Kim Kardashian is known as ‘queen’ of the selfie. Interviewers frequently ask her how she does it. How does she take such amazing selfies? Marie Claire included her answers in a recent article which I made into a PDF you can download .
Echo Look Will Provide User’s with a Photographic Journal of all Their Outfits. That in and of itself is pretty cool for clothing obsessed women like me. Yet even that’s not it’s primary purpose!
Echo Look’s primary purpose is to provide women (and impliedly girls who I suspect may end up being the most prolific user demographic for Look) with fashion advice! It’s unclear exactly what form this advice will take. It could be Amazon Echo software but there appears to be a human component to. This, for my purposes, isn’t the biggest selling feature.
Teens and young women I think are the target demographic for Echo Look.
Because frankly, fashion advice isn’t something I really need or want. I don’t want to sound arrogant…but I’m pretty confident that I know what looks good on me and what doesn’t. I’m also pretty confident in my ability to pick out the correct attire for any given situation…but I’m not the norm. The only reason I’ve arrived at my level of confidence is because I went to school for fashion design. Which hopefully explains my clothing obsession too.
Many women don’t share my confidence however. Many more don’t even know what looks good on them, because in general, that’s not an easy thing to figure out. I know, because I’m not great at helping other people figure that out either…it’s actually much harder than it looks. I’ve just been lucky because I’ve had years of concentrated practice with myself while in school. Unfortunately I’ve had much less experience with other people’s body types. I can tell when something does look good on someone else…but getting them to that point is difficult for me.
So, an Amazon Echo function that offers fashion advice to people 24/7 in the comfort of their own homes has the potential to be pure genius! Which is another reason I predict that Echo Look will be huge! Also, I think that this concept leaves room for future development. In my mind…the sky’s the limit. For example, how many years has the concept of virtual dressing rooms been kicked around…yet you never really hear of it taking off. With something like Alexa Echo home integration however, I think it’s not only possible but quite probable.
Below: Part of my fascination with Echo Look is the ‘hand’s free’ capability.
More About Why I’m In Love With the Concept of Echo Look
Every time we travel I spend inordinate amounts of time figuring out what outfits I should bring. First I have to figure out what fits me, because as every woman knows, we generally have at least 2 if not 3 entirely different wardrobes based upon our current weight. I call mine my skinny, medium or fat clothes. Once I have a basic idea of which of those categories might fit me then I have to try everything on with a bunch of different options to decide which combinations look best. Last I have to find the exact right accessories to enhance each ensemble.
After I have about twice as many outfits as is practical I need to start thinning things out because I won’t have enough room (or really my bags won’t meet the pairline’s weight requirements) for everything I’d like to bring. For some reason this thinning out part is the absolute hardest for me. I keep thinking to myself…what if it’s cold…what if I run out of X types of clothing…what if, god forbid, I need to actually shop while I’m there! Not that I don’t love shopping…I do…sort of…but not under pressure and not when I desperately need one thing because that’s when I can never find that one thing.
It’s at this stage that Echo Look could really help me out. As part of the thinning process I take selfies, I guess you’d call them, so I can remember what’s supposed to go with what. I really think that Echo Look could be a huge time saver for me with this part!
The idea that I could just tell Alexa to take my picture and then turn around and take it again from the back, and have all those photos nicely stored and available at a moments notice is fantastic!
Below: I guess you’d call my pre-trip packing photos ‘selfies’
Why I Can’t Ask for Echo Look as My Birthday Present
I was pretty shocked when I realized that I couldn’t actually buy Echo Look yet. That’s because Amazon appears to be beta testing it first. They are only sending invitations to Prime members who request them…but requesting an invite doesn’t appear to guarantee that you’ll receive one. I did request one and received this in an email shortly afterwards:
The email I received from Amazon indicating they’d received my request for an invitation.
After a few weeks of waiting and further research to see if anyone has been invited to buy Echo Look yet…I found nothing online on the topic. If people are receiving invitations no one is talking about it. So I devised a method to contact the Echo department.
My Search for Inside Information About Echo Look
I had to call Amazon customer service about an unrelated matter. Since we have a new distribution center near us most of our Amazon orders are now delivered by the Amazon Logistics department. This is both good and bad. Oftentimes we now can get next day deliveries and sometimes even same day deliveries. But finding those deliveries can be challenging! The new Logistics team leaves packages anywhere and everywhere but at our door…and they never ring the doorbell first. So this was my 3rd time calling them to complain about finding packages in weird places that were soaking wet because they leave them in the rain without first placing them into a plastic bag. It can be challenging finding Amazon’s Customer Service phone number so here’s the one that always works for me.
Calling Amazon Customer Service – Amazon Logistics – Echo Support
The Amazon Customer Service Phone Number I Use
(866) 216-1072
If you Google it, Google now shows you a different number in the first search result
Google Search Result: (888)289-4331
I always had to call Customer Service 1st and explain my problem before being routed to Amazon Logistics so the 3rd time I called I remembered to ask if Logistics has a separate number that I could call directly and they do.
Amazon Logistics Phone Number (877) 252-2701
The First Incorrect Inside Information I Was Given
The Logistic’s person I talked to was chatty so I asked her about Echo Look. She told me that everyone there is really excited about it but that no one really knows anything more about it than the general public. She said that the Logistics team was usually kept in the dark until after products were launched. But she seemed eager to want to help me out. So using Amazon’s internal computer network she figured out that in order to be invited to buy Echo Look you first needed to pre-order it.
I was beyond thrilled with that news! It explained why I hadn’t received my invite!
After hanging up I immediately went back to the webpage introducing Echo Look and tried really hard to find anywhere I’d missed about how I could pre-order it. Sadly, there was nothing…I couldn’t find any information on how to place a pre-order.
Above: You have to admit, Echo Look’s design is pretty great too.
A Few Tricks for Calling Echo Support (877) 375-9365
At least I’d remembered to ask for Echo Support’s direct phone number. That ended up being a good thing because that number is much harder to find. Furthermore I discovered that once I did find it, it’s not very easy call and reach a live person either.
When you call (877) 375-9365 the phone doesn’t even ring…you’re immediately greeted with a robotic sounding message stating that it needs to determine whether or not you’re really a human. It was more than a little jarring to immediately hear this robotic voice before the phone has even rung. Then, after I listened to the message there was nothing but silence afterwards. It took me three calls before I finally figured out that I needed to say “I’m human.” There were few more moments of silence leading me to think that saying I was human wasn’t the solution, but then finally I heard the sound of a ringing phone faintly in the distance it seemed but then I was connected to a real live support person!
The woman I spoke to was also very nice and as eager to help as the Logistic’s employee, but she told me, somewhat sadly, that she really couldn’t enlighten me much more than the Logistic’s person had.
However we continued talking for a few minutes and it turned out she did have access to more information.
In the final analysis calling Echo Support did reveal 3 things that I hadn’t known before:
First, I was told that the prior customer service person was correct about needing to place a pre-order but her timing was off. She said you do that only after you’ve been invited. She said that was the only time that pre-ordering was possible and that preorders were placed from a link supplied in the invitation.
The 2nd thing I learned was that there have been some invitations already extended. But she didn’t know how many or what the future held for any more of them. She said generally there isn’t any consistent pattern to how these might unfold. But she also didn’t think they were looking for specific traits but rather that the selection process was a fairly random one.
Last, she offered to send me some additional information I might not have seen or have had access to by email.
I received her email shortly after we hung up. I’ve copied the most interesting parts below:
Email from Echo Support
As we discussed, the procedure to select the candidates is random, however you can always request the invitation to be on the wait list, Amazon will send you an email if selected or not selected; if you got chosen into the email you can see the link to pre-order the device.
Also, these are some details about the product:
Echo Look is an entirely new category of device – the first artificially intelligent style assistant with Alexa that helps you look your best. Echo Look is a hands-free camera — simply ask Alexa to take a full-length photo or short video of your head-to-toe look, without using a smartphone camera or mirror.
Echo Look mobile app (see above)
In the Echo Look mobile app, you can see your outfit from any angle, get outfit inspired recommendations, easily share your look with close friends on Instagram, Facebook, via text and other social networks and use Style Check for an ‘on-the-spot second opinion’ on your look.
Alexa Integration
As part of the Echo device family, both Amazon Echo and Echo Look have access to the Alexa Voice Service and use far-field voice technology to hear your voice when you say the wake word (for example, “Alexa”). Use the wake word with Echo Look to play music, control smart home devices, and hear information, news, sports scores, weather, and more.
What is in the box?

Privacy Concerns About Echo Look
Rather than reinvent the wheel I’m just going to mention the fact that Echo Look presents huge privacy concerns any way you look at it, and provide links to the best coverage of this topic that I’ve found so far. Privacy concerns range from the simple matter of IoT devices generally having ZERO security to Alexa’s ‘always on and always recording’ utility…for sure privacy is a huge worry!
Setting privacy matters aside for one moment, here’s the thing…I still really want it! I think that if I want it this much, even though I believe I’m more sensitized to this issue than most people would be and that I really do fully understand all of the risks, I’m certain that many, many more people will want it too and that they won’t give privacy issues a second thought.
Public Reactions So Far
While there have been a ton of articles published about Echo Look…pretty much any and all online tech publishers have jumped on this story…very little has appeared that gauges responses of the general public so far. The most vocal group are members of meh.com…which appears to be a millennial Facebook alternative…oh, and they sell junk too. Below are some screenshots I took of user comments there.
I agree with the one person who wrote that this will probably be huge because they don’t think it will be…but obviously not for the same reason!
The only other real opinion piece I was able to uncover is this very short BBC news article that states ‘so far the reactions are mixed.’
What the Big Tech Publishers Think About Echo Look
Reactions here have been almost universally negative…because of Privacy concerns. Two of the best articles along those lines are:
Wired’s Amazon’s ‘Echo Look’ Could Snoop a lot More Than Just Your Clothes
The Verge’s Amazon’s Echo Look is a Minefield of Privacy Concerns
One other article which on the face of it appears to be really negative based upon it’s title ‘The Echo Look is Amazon’s Trojan Horse‘ by Backchannel, really isn’t. In it they really offer some pretty optimistic insights I think, and predict a multitude of unanticipated uses will quite possible quickly follow Echo Look’s release.
I was pleasantly surprised to read this last article which came out a few days after all of the negative and cautionary ones did. It was only one which is really positive about matter’s of privacy. Computerworld’s How ‘Amazon Echo Look Will Improve Privacy This one article alone goes a very lone way towards dispelling any of the privacy concerns stated by all of the others.
Not only that, but Computerworld’s prediction agrees with my own…they predict that Echo Look will be huge!
Conclusion
One last reason I believe Echo Look is destined for greatness is because it’s Amazon. Not that many people are aware of Amazon’s position in the fashion industry…and I’m no expert. Even though we generally don’t order something online in our household unless Amazon carries it…because any other site would be too much effort apparently…I almost never order clothing from them. Socks and underwear…yes…but actual clothing…no. But wait…I really do!
It just dawned on me that one of my favorite online vendors for clothing is Zappos. If you don’t buy clothing from Zappos yet, you don’t know what you’re missing! You get free shipping both ways and 365 days to decide if you want to keep something! Literally no other clothing merchandiser in the world offers such lenient purchasing policies! And guess what…Amazon owns Zappos!
So to wrap things up here, while I’ve yet to receive my own invitation, I still think that Echo Look will, in all likelihood be ‘the next big thing’ if only for the reason that ‘selfie challenged’ baby boomers like myself desperately need it!
My Previously Undisclosed Selfie Album
Btw, I never publish pics of myself, and in fact have procrastinated about writing one very important post for over a year now because of my fear of this…so I’m biting the bullet and sharing this album of my selfies in the hopes that I can now get on with writing that very important post. If you’re interested it’s about how I went from long brown hair to short and grey (really white) in just 1 year’s time pretty painlessly. And yes, I do realize that my long procrastinated about post may not sound very important, but trust me when I tell you that it really, really is.
Why? Because a lot of women struggle with how to stop dyeing their hair and make the transition to grey without looking like a freak for the few years time it usually takes for their to completely grey grow out. Often this transition is harder for people with brown or red hair. Since grey hair is trending right now, and it’s so fashionable to sport grey…I need to publish it before these circumstances change.
The selfie album below is comprised of some of the photos I took to document my transition. The ones I’m sharing here represent only the best ones taken over roughly the span of one year. I know that they are pretty pathetic, which illustrates how beneficial Echo Look could have been, had it been available to me at the time I took these.

Question for My Readers
There’s one more thing I need to do before I overwhelm you with ‘additional resource links.’ I have one important question for my readers. Do you think if I sent this post to the Amazon Echo department that then they’d send me an invitation? As I mentioned above, in talking to them they explained that they aren’t privy to this secret selection process either. Because it’s not for sale yet, Echo Look is outside the realm of their department currently. They were unclear who actually does have jurisdiction over beta testing…but they seemed to think it was occurring currently. So please leave me a comment if you have an opinion on this…especially if you have any knowledge about the inner workings of the beta selection process…I’d be forever grateful.
