âNo wings, clearly too big for the top of a Christmas tree. Makes you a bit of a shitty angel then, doesnât it?â

any director's cut commentary on the most recent chapter?
đ absolutely delighted to, anon! (and who are you that you remember these!)
i donât know if thereâs any specific part youâre interested in, but i'll scroll through the chapter and comment on anything that pops out to me. if there IS something specific, please ask!
âAct versus status,â she says now, returning to an earlier river, further inland up the delta. âStatus is not a criminal act.â The delta splits into two here, and she follows one of the streams. âFor exampleâŠâ she whispers. âFor example⊠being an addict is a status, not an act.â
this was so fun! this is a scene from my pre-canon fic âa controlled burnâ, but from kimâs perspective.
kim was specific enough on her end of the phone call that i knew iâd picked some piece of real crim law for her to be referencing, so two years later for this scene i had to find it again. and then it turned out to be much more relevant than i realised at the time!
also i do want this to work even if itâs the first fic of mine you read! thankfully (evilly) the show decided to make born yesterday the most traumatic old hollywood film choice of all time, so. there you go.
Sluggish with foreign material and long days and copy machines and coffee breaks and new things.
a little reference to this one shot of mine, âgreenâ! she likes new things.
something v. Texas, or Pressburger v. something
itâs powell v texas, but kimâs brain gives her pressburger here because sheâs a fan of powell and pressburger movies.
âI saw the news,â Kim blurts out, her chest rising and falling between the words. She tries for warm and sympathetic instead: âAnd I thought of you, how are you?â
i love everyoneâs kindly-innocent-phone-voices on this show, and itâs fun trying to capture them in text.
also ever since i first saw the episode iâve been obsessed with the idea of kim calling francesca and making it as far as she can through a conversation, as if she isnât desperate to ask about jimmy from the moment the call connects.
âRobles and Goto Partners,â the receptionist says musically. âHow can I help you today?â
big ups to gina robles from the 410 cold open who is suddenly given a role in my fanfiction, hi gina.
also of course our beloved viola, who witnessed much too much, and who iâm so delighted by. slinging shade about vegan patties. âi, um. good.â an icon. sheâs seen saul goodman in his pajamas. who else could it be.
Lynn has family up in Santa Fe, so when she found us a place here⊠it just seemed meant to be.
even bigger ups to Lynn of deleted scene fame who absolutely made the most of a free trip to the stein eriksen lodge in 2004.
This is a prepaid call fromâand then Jimmyâs own voice clicks in, a hollow recording: âUh, Jimmy McGill?â before it shifts back to the robotâ⊠an inmate at Montrose Federal Correctional Complex.
SHOUTOUT TO SERIAL, WHO HERE LISTENED TO THAT TEN YEARS AGO
âYâknow, itâs a funny thing,â Jimmy says, crackling and hissing at the edges, so far away. âI canât stop thinking about what the weatherâs like out there.â
oh honey
kim heâs thinking now
kim get your man out heâs dreaming again heâs wistful
âNo, I meantââ Jimmy starts, and the tone is suddenly so familiar she can see him clearly, can see him shaking his head and staring at her pleadingly. âWhat about you as the better lawyer?â
jimmy saving up his precious minutes of shitty payphone connection to sow some seeds đ„ș
this next scene with patty is a really interesting one in terms of like... one of the difficulties iâve found writing kim pov is handling the dialogue in the scenes where kim is largely silent. itâs such an important part of the character but it really strains my limited range of action description.
and i didnât even realise specifically how little she did speak here, but she says less than ten words over this entire interaction.
itâs tough because i still want it to feel like two people engaging with each other, like pattyâs bouncing off kim and not just giving a ted talk.
Sheâd forgotten the bar exam, in the months afterwards. By the time she received her score, she had barely remembered what questions sheâd answered, what subjects sheâd written on.
itâs weird and wonderful how like... way back when i was working on the bar exam chapters for "slip and fall seasonâ, i read a bunch of things people had written about their experiences. and i remember people saying afterwards they totally forgot everything they wrote. i dont know if this ever ended up in safs, but itâs so cool how like... that was just sitting in my head, waiting to be useful.
like churning water heading for the shore.
all the best chapter endings are accidentally in iambic pentameter.

Songbirds act as one when they sing together, new study suggests
By Francesca Giuliani-Hoffman
June 14, 2021
The brains of duetting songbirds may be linked together during performances, according to a new study.
Singers performing a duet, jazz players riffing together effortlessly, paired-up dancers never skipping a step: great performers are so coordinated, they become one.
What are the mechanisms that regulate coordination and cooperation? Neurobiologists are learning more from some of nature's foremost musical performers: songbirds. The brains of duetting songbirds are linked together during performances, a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found.
The exchange of auditory feedback between the birds "momentarily inhibits motor circuits used for singing in the listening partner, which helps link the pair's brains and coordinate turn-taking for a seemingly telepathic performance," according to a news release.
It's not telepathy -- but almost, according to study coauthor Eric Fortune, a neurobiologist and associate professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology's department of biological sciences.
"The birds hearing each other links their brains to act as one," he told CNN.
"The male's brain has expectations of what the female brain is going to do. The female brain has expectations of what the male brain is going to do. And when they start operating together, they're tied," Fortune added.
A songbird's brain and a trampolineThe study focuses on what happens in the brains of male and female plain-tailed wrens -- a species native to the Andes region, living in bamboo thickets -- while they sing duets.
Plain-tailed wrens are songbirds that live in bamboo thickets in the Andes region. The duets of Pheugopedius euophrys are frantically paced call-and-response songs, and they take turns singing so rapidly, it sounds as if a single bird is singing, according to the study.Working from the Yanayacu Biological Station's lab in Ecuador, right by the active Antisana volcano, scientists specifically investigated an area of the songbirds' brain known to control singing.Researchers recorded the birds' brain activity during duets using electrodes much thinner than a hair, Fortune explained. The team observed that when a bird sings, the neurons spike in activity, but when a bird hears a partner sing, the neurons quiet down.
The fact that neurons quiet down is especially significant, Fortune explained. "Oftentimes, what happens is after you have inhibition, you have a rebound, and that rebound can change the timing of your own behavior," he said.Fortune compared that effect to that of jumping on a trampoline: "You bounce down, that's kind of slow, but then you shoot off." The scientists hypothesize the release from inhibition could help a bird respond faster when it is its turn to sing. According to Fortune, there are similarities between how the birds take turns singing and how humans do that while they converse. "If you watch your own interactions with people, you'll see that the other person starts talking a nanosecond after you stop uttering your last word -- it's really amazing," he said. What humans and robots can learn from songbirds"Every achievement of humankind is based on cooperation, that is the feature of humans that has allowed us to do the amazing things we do," Fortune said. Learning more about how songbirds stay in sync during their singing performances can help illuminate the mechanics of coordination in humans, a complex phenomenon that involves many different types of information being exchanged among parties.
"A lot of us understand how hard it is to dance, and in part it's because you are exchanging complex sets of information at different times -- touch, vision, acoustic, you have to signal your intent, there has to be some set of variations, and it turns out to be a real mess."Songbirds, on the other hand, take turns in their duets in a more structured fashion, making it easier to analyze how cooperation works, according to Fortune.Furthering our understanding of cooperation in songbirds could also help us build better robots, Fortune explained."Robots are actually more precise and better controlled than a human can control themselves, and yet robots can't cooperate with us," he said.
The brains of duetting songbirds link up to create "a single control system" spanning two individuals, according to Fortune. This could inspire the development of robots that can better form partnerships with humans."It's this linkage of the control systems across individuals that is critical insight for roboticists," Fortune said.

Review: Mechanical Mind
Author: Carme Torras
Genre: sci-fi
Year: 2017Â
Notes: Collection of two short fiction stories and two essays about robotics. I have read the italian translation by Raul Ciannella and Francesca Secci published by Future Fiction (Future Fiction also published an english translation, and there is also a print on demand edition). Read this review in Italian here.
Spain has changed, and is now in post-apocalyptic conditions. Cars are not used anymore (replaced by small personal aircrafts) and the roads have changed too, becoming abandoned places where the remains of cars still litter the roadside. But sometimes the need to visit a service station remains, and this one is unlike the others. It is a teenage girl who notices it first, and then both her parents realize it. There is an unexpected cleanliness in station, and a homeless man seems to be living there and taking care of itâŠ
And what is happening to Ictineu Tercat, operated recently in Thailand, whose heartbeat is behaving weirdly?
The essays are an interesting insight on the future of robotics: what are the characteristics needed in a robot that interacts with people, especially in caring roles, and how can those problems be solved is just one of the questions they raise. And there is also space for the role these robots will have in society, and for how science fiction can help in understanding it.
Carme Torras is a researcher at the Spanish Scientific Research Council and has published hundreds of articles about robotics and AIs, and this makes the two articles/short essays included here quite the compelling read, since they offer a glimpse of what and how is it so complicated to engineer a robot that can perform tasks that arenât the simple, repetitive movements a mechanical arm in a factory performs. Robots that will take care of people in need (children, disabled people, elderly) will need to learn and understand the circumstances, and how to move in a setting in which humans move too. I found the paragraphs about the challenge in teaching robots how to deal with different materials very interesting, and if youâre a sci-fi author you may want to give these articles a read. And letâs face it, even if you arenât, youâre gonna be interested.
The two stories are very fascinating, and I would love to read more by Carme Torras. The first story got my attention pretty quickly, in offering this world that is made fascinating by various hints: it is post-apocalyptic, because car wrecks still litter the roads and tons of people have lost their jobs due to high levels of automatization, but the parents of Ag-Nese, the teenage girl who notices the homeless man first, actually have jobs and she is getting an education, so we havenât reached a âtotal collapse of civilizationâ post-apocalyptic level. I was going to say itâs a sneaky apocalypse, but for those who lost their jobs itâs definitely not so. The second story, called A Life E-Ternal, is a compelling narrative of fear and discovery. Iâm not going to say anything else because of spoilers.
That being said, if you want to give Catalan sci-fi from a robotics researcher a chance, this is a great occasion.

What Will It Take To Unlock AIâs Potential?
The National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show 2018 showcased the trends and technologies to watch going into the new year, and AI was a major part of the conversation. EBay, Cosabella and 1-800-FLOWERS.COM are just three of the brands that have gone public with the benefits they have seen from AI-powered solutions. However, as AIâs use expands, data scientists and algorithm developers must incorporate ethical structures into the technology to ensure shoppers have a trustworthy experience. Â
The RTP editors share what it will take to unlock AIâs potential, as well as what could stand in the way of the technologyâs growth.
Debbie Hauss, Editor-in-Chief: I definitely think there's no stopping AI/machine learning in the future of retail. Retailers and their solution partners are quickly realizing the long-term value of AI in improving 1:1 personalization efforts. Done right, machine learning algorithms can continuously learn, providing more relevant offers and products for shoppers, which in turn will provide better ROI for retailers and brands. Customer service also will get a boost with AI, helping to weed out the basic customer inquiries. What is important for all companies to acknowledge, though, is that they should not plan to completely eliminate human interaction. That will be a quick way to lose brand confidence and loyalty.
Adam Blair, Executive Editor: For AI to reach its optimum potential, retailers are going to need to be crystal clear about who, or rather what, is âspeakingâ to consumers at any given time: Is it a human being, or an AI-powered chatbot? âThis [distinction] should be explicit for creating a trustworthy user experience,â said Francesca Rossi with IBM Research AI, during an NRF 2018 session on AI and ethics. Forresterâs Brendan Witcher gave me a great practical example of the reason why: âThereâs a very high risk if someone thinks a person is talking to them, but then the machine says something insensitive â e.g. if someone is traveling for a funeral and the bot tells them to âHave a good time.â If the consumer thinks itâs a person saying that, he or she will be highly offended.â Donât try to fool consumers into thinking theyâre speaking to a human being if theyâre not â or you might be the one playing the fool.
Marie Griffin, Managing Editor: If your organizationâs core competency is not technology, you will be left behind because machine learning is accelerating software development beyond human capabilities. That is literally the definition of AI. You canât keep trying to justify legacy systems, regardless of how much they cost or how long you thought they would last. You have to pick vendor partners that are the best of the best and are dedicating all their resources to constant improvement of whatever technologies they offer. You have to choose cloud technologies to take advantage of super-rapid software development âand this is likely a more cost-effective option than systems you once bought and owned. And if you donât have the intestinal fortitude to do these things, get your company ready for sale or buy a company that has what you need. Donât fail at a sad, slow pace. Make your move now.
Glenn Taylor, Senior Editor: With mobile used at virtually every point during the shopper journey, one would have to think that AI will truly thrive once retailers fully integrate it into these platforms. That means retailers will have to leverage AI platforms that can collect data from other iOS/Android apps in order to know a consumerâs tendencies beyond shopping â as creepy as that sounds. Of course, the option to âopt-inâ is the key component here, and thereâs no such thing as too much transparency. Company culture is still going to determine the success of AI on a case-by-case basis. Up to 61% of retailers deploying AI still lack in-house knowledge, while 47% lack a clear implementation plan for the technology, according to a survey from Infosys. If retailers donât have a proper grasp of the technology theyâre deploying â or simply arenât buying into it â then there will be fewer use cases that can set the bar for how to improve the technology in the long run.
Klaudia Tirico, Features Editor: Itâs time people realize that AI is here and here to stay, so you either accept it and excel, or donât and get left behind. Based on my research, Iâve learned that accepting AI has proven difficult, as humans are afraid they will lose their jobs to robots. I donât believe thatâs the case. For AI to reach optimum potential, retailers, marketers and organizations in general have to realize that AI will allow them to free up time to tackle big new initiatives, instead of having to worry about the routine tasks of their job. Instead of spending hours analyzing data and figuring out what makes customers tick, AI can help retailers deliver greater experiences in a fraction of the time. This, in turn, will make more time available to focus on additional aspects of the business. Retailers such as Amazon, Loweâs and Cosabella are already leveraging AI in some way, shape or form; itâs time others embrace the machine, or risk losing out.Â

Weak and craven creatures are we || @storiesnotyettoldÂ
Sheâs not sure if Connor will be in sleep mode or not - sheâs not entirely sure how to wake him up if he is - but all she knows is that she needs him - not Luca, not Hilda... It has to be Connor. So making as much noise as possible as she runs up the stairs to the attic - where he spends his downtime (which, honestly, is beyond weird and creepy) - she calls his name out, as soon as sheâs through the door. âConnor? Connor, you in here?âÂ

@thiriumdxd wants the d (and by âdâ I mean disturbing content)
Since the news broke on Friday - Francesca was waiting for something to happen. And by something - she meant a termination of her employment. And the time between finding out and being due back gave her imagination plenty of time to conjure up scenarios. Sheâd get a phone call Saturday night. Or sheâd wake up to an email Sunday morning. A text as she walked out the door on Monday. Her card wouldnât work when she got to the office. Security would escort her out of the building. Sheâd be called into HR after lunch for a chat. Or arrive and find a slip on her desk.
With Elijah Kamski back at the helm - her days were numbered. Last in, first out. Heâd solve the companies deviancy problem one handed and she would be superfluous. And after all, the board had made such poor choices in his absence and Mr. Kamski was working hard to rectify them.
Attempting to circumvent a scene, she showed up nearly a full hour early (with coffee). But her stuff wasnât in a box on the sidewalk, she wasnât denied entry, klaxons didnât start wailing as she scanned her keycard.Â
No. None of the things she expected happened.
Instead - as she approached her office walking past a row of silent desks - thanks to the glass walls, she was aware that her terminal was on, and someone was sat at her desk. Sheâs not sure who - or why - but sheâs still certain of what it means, as she pulls her earbuds out with one hand, entering her office, frowning just slightly, not greeting the stranger, but not making her entrance quiet either.

@rkunwiired made fleeting eye contactÂ
Everything had settled down - it would be a lie to say it had gone back to normal - but the new normal was emerging and programmes were being put in place to manage the after effects - to try to ease the transition. The scramble to find people to help - to find people willing, competent and qualified - had meant that Frankie had, as yet, not had to make excuses as to why she had volunteered. After all, rates of deviancy were low in IRIS androids - something only aided by the fact theyâd not been on the main commercial market for some time... And the same buy out that caused that, as much as the company had been facing collapse at the time, meant that her financial future was not reliant on working.Â
But the influx of work was too mountainous for anyone to really question her motives - not that they were illicit. But she couldnât have people thinking she was some sort of bleeding heart, could she?
Gently steering Marina from her office she cast a brief glance around the androids dotted around the hastily thrown together waiting room. A swipe of her finger across a tablet brings up the next in line and she lifts her gaze, and her voice - âChester?â

@tenaciously-dysfunctional from here
There were some things that one shouldnât hear and that just happened. Tony had a lot of problems and not even one of them was anyoneâs business. And there was that woman.
He didnât even want to know what he spoke in his dream. Moments like these made Tony religious. But he can just play it off, right?
âWell, I hope I was saying how amazing you are because that is whatâs on my mind now even now.â
Frankie turns to eye him over her shoulder - sheâs noticed the way heâs tensed like a rabbit in the headlights at her statement. Maybe she shouldâve just gone with âgood morningâ? She flicks her gaze over him when he speaks.
âMmhmm.â The tone of noise she makes suggests that he was most certainly not saying anything of the like, nor does she believe his attempt at misdirection. But she presses no further, turning away from him, sweeping her hair from her shoulders as she struggles slightly to do up the zip on the back of her dress.

@storiesnotyettold  Gave me blanket permission to love them - what a fool! 4 Kamski?? Maybe? Or anyone?
The party - she had felt - had been in especially poor taste. She had suffered it though because playing the gracious wet-eyed conquest suited for all of five seconds as she - and a man she had once thought of as family - signed their respective shares in IRIS over to Fancourt Enterprises. With that done, however, unable to drink and distinctly alienated by the men in suits who ran the boardrooms but probably couldnât change the time on the dashboard of their cars - she had decided that given there was little to celebrate for her here.
Expected, of course, to look a certain way - she had made some poor choices. Her body had barely recovered from her accident - high heels and tight fabric were doing her no good. The car journey here had shredded her nerves raw and almost caused a breakdown - and she refused to do it again.Â
Her date - her companion for the night - one of her fatherâs androids had thought better than to press the point and had taken off running to get her something more suitable to walk home in. Even at top speed, it would take him some time - and so, she had eased herself onto the steps outside of... Whomeverâs house, happy to leave the party behind. She hears the door open, maybe - subconsciously - but it is the light washing over her that makes her lift her head, although she doesnât turn it towards the source, hoping that whoever it is will sense her need for solitude and stay away.Â

Connor hesitated before saying quietly, âThere is a 12% chance they wonâtâŠâ He kept his hands stuffed into his pockets to hide their twitching and tried to meet the otherâs eyes but didnât quite succeed, instead looking at their chin. âBut I have to do something! I⊠I canât just sit here and do nothing!âÂ
âTwelve per cent? Twelve per cent?!â She canât help it - canât keep her voice calm. âItâs not good enough, Connor. You canât go there.â She grabs his wrists - and now - sheâs struggling to look at him herself, shaking, just slightly. Anger is the easiest emotion - anything else risks vulnerability and when sheâs already hurting she doesnât want to expose herself - to present an easy target. âPlease, Connor, please donât go.â

The sudden pressure of his weight is a little⊠Unexpected - but not entirely unwelcome. At least - until she remembers to pretend otherwise. âYou doing okay there? Batteries running low or something?â She asks quietly, turning her head to look at him.Â

âIâm not surprised.â She says, using her hands to free her hair from under the jacket sheâs just pulled on. âIâm complicated, Iâm an enigma, wrapped in a mystery. Try to enjoy the feeling of not being completely in control of everything, huh? Youâll only hurt yourself trying otherwise.â Because she runs hot and cold quicker than a faulty boiler and trying to figure it out will likely only bend him all out of shape.

đ©outside in a terrible storm -for Francesca
Hi welcome to chilliâs || @detrtcnnr || Still Accepting
The rain has long plastered her clothes against her skin - but sitting with an umbrella in a thunderstorm just seems like an invitation to death - and of the two getting a little wet and cold seems far more preferable. Sat on a bench, overlooking the bay she is entirely unaware that she is not actually alone - fully enthralled by the indigo sky above the water and the lightning breaking through the clouds at regular intervals. The storm is really close, maybe two and a half miles out and itâs truly stunning so close - if a little humbling. A flash of lightning throws a shadow, and frowning, she twists to identify the source.
