Why now, all of a sudden? Why not during all those years that Miyo suffered with the Saimori family?

My Happy Marriage Second Season Episode 4 Review - Female Stigma
With Miyo’s self-declared daddy Naoshi Usui making his mark as the new antagonist of the season, this makes it so that Miyo and Arata become involved with the military, which is interesting because this means that Miyo will be more involved with the plot and with her husband’s workplace instead of staying home like she usually does.
Introducing Kaoruko to the story makes for an interesting premise. She’s the only female officer in the military and the stigma towards female officers is very rampant. While this is a fictional version of a blended Meiji and Taisho era, sexism was highly rampant during those eras. She is very capable, yet her male coworkers think otherwise, which is why she has to prove herself like beating a man in a sparring match. Her moments with Miyo were cute though. It’s nice to see Miyo finally having a female friend who’s not a family member. Though, with Godou’s reaction about her towards the end, I’m assuming she’s either gay or used to be Kiyoka’s fiancee.
Miyo also gets her fair share of sexism in the office too with some male officers not being friendly towards her presence. Mukadeyama, I think that’s his name, also says his fair share of sexist BS like how the officers don’t like having the presence of women around. Not only that, he’s also wary of Miyo’s powers as an Usuba as her powers are essentially the antithesis of ability-users. Despite that, he does respect Kaoruko as someone who has to work hard to gain respect of others, but it’s still a long way for her to be respected as both a woman and a person.
There’s also some insight with Naoshi via Miyo’s grandpa who seems to know him the best. He was an odd child who had strong powers that he was an outcast. The only person he was attached to was Sumi, Miyo’s mom. I’m assuming that his attachment to Sumi was the reason why he calls himself Miyo’s father, just so he has something to remember Sumi by. Because there’s definitely no way he’s the biological father of Miyo—My Happy Marriage would be a totally different story because Miyo wouldn’t be Miyo if she wasn’t related to Sumi and Mr. Saimori. I’m really curious to see his intents with Miyo.
Godou is not dead, fortunately. He gets a nice moment in the hospital with Kazushi that looks like they’re flirting. He has to be hospitalized for two months. I do like that he’s eager on the idea of being Miyo’s bodyguard because he knows how nice she is—in fact, he’s probably one of the few male military officials who respect women given how the others reacted in this episode. Though, I do wonder why Kazushi is visiting Godou. Will he play some sort of role later on?
Kaoruko is voiced by Haruka Tomatsu. You might know her as Asuna Yuuki from SAO and Hori from Horimiya. Given that this anime is filled with big names, I honestly can’t wait to see how Tomatsu will do in this season. I haven’t heard her in an anime for a while and I think she’s talented, so I’m anticipating her acting. In English, she’s voiced by Kayley Stallings, who is a name I’m not familiar with. Speaking of big names, Mukadeyama is voiced by Tomoaki Maeno. Young Sumi is voiced by Miyuri Shimabukuro and young Naoshi is voiced by Shiki Aoki, who is a name I’m not too familiar with.
The episode is definitely a buildup for what’s to come. I’m just worried when the plot will start to take action. What is Kaoruko’s deal and when will Naoshi make his move? What are your thoughts on this episode?

My Happy Marriage Episode 10 Review - Bringing A Gun To A Supernatural Fight
There was a lot take in for this episode. Everything happened so fast that I’m still trying to process everything. I do feel like the story is trying to take in too much; am I the only one feeling this way? There’s the matter of the Grotesqueries; then there’s Miyo’s nightmares and then the argument she had with Kiyoka. There’s also the matter of what the Usuba clan really is. It’s really hard for me to grasp everything concisely.
Kiyoka finally gets a lead in the elusive Usuba clan. It turns out that Tsuruki is a fake name that the Usuba clan uses to hide their identity; those who use Tsuruki as their surname is actually an Usuba. For example, Arata himself said that Arata Tsuruki is an alias as his real name is Arata Usuba. He takes Miyo to see Arata and that’s where they both learn that Arata is Miyo’s cousin and that she has a maternal grandfather, Yoshiro Usuba.
It turns out that Miyo does have supernatural abilities, but they had been sealed away until recently. Her ability is called Dream-Sight; it allows her to see into the dreams of people and even travel into them. This makes absolute sense with how her nightmares have been like. Her nightmares are definitely her traveling into the dreams of Grotesqueries. It’s also explained that her ability is so strong and rare even for someone of pure Usuba blood and it’s because of this that they want her to stay at the Usuba manor.
This episode made me hate the Usuba family. Seriously, fuck Arata and Yoshiro. Why do you have to be so intrusive? They suddenly ask Kiyoka to relinquish all duties and responsibilities of taking care of Miyo to them. Dude, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN SHE WAS GETTING ABUSED GROWING UP? Don’t you dare tell me you didn’t know because I do have a feeling that they were keeping tabs on Sumi like how the Tatsuishi family were keeping tabs on Miyo and the Saimori family too. Like, the AUDACTIY to want Miyo in their lives now of all times. Why are you only taking action now when you could’ve helped Miyo when she needed it the most in her life. What’s even worse is that Miyo had no say in all of this craziness. She didn’t want them to duel and she didn’t want Kiyoka to get hurt. Now that they’re separated for the time being, I just hope that they’re both able to overcome their flaws individually.
The duel between Arata and Kiyoka was pretty cool, not gonna lie. It’s nice seeing more action and supernatural fights. The way Arata just took out a gun reminded me of Genya from Demon Slayer showing up with one all of a sudden. I hate to say this, but Arata is rather formidable as his powers are much different from Kiyoka’s. Kiyoka relies heavily on power while Arata relies on deceit and trickery; he can make copies of himself and can make illusions of other people. While I do love the fact that Kiyoka dropped his guard when the illusion of Miyo showed up, showing that she is his weakness, it also hurt me because it was because of that weakness that he lost and was forced to quick travel back to the front gates of the manor.
I’m glad that Hazuki of all people is the most sensible in this story. She was the one who berated Kiyoka for going to her after he lost and she also told him that Miyo’s actions were all because of him as he’s the only one she has in terms of immediate family. FINALLY! HAZUKI IS BEST GIRL FOR THIS.
Like I said, this episode did feel like it was trying to amalgamate too much and it felt a bit too fast. Instead of going to Miyo right away, Kiyoka has to deal with grotesquerie problems while Arata will explain about Sumi’s history to Miyo. I just hope there’s a good balance between these two plot points as it’s already the double digits in terms of episode number. What are your thoughts on this episode?

My Happy Marriage Episode 11 Review - Miyo Gets Her Powers Back
What do you mean there’s only one episode left? Will there be time in the last episode for someone to beat the crap out of Arata because he needs one? Will this last episode resolve everything?
Anyways, this penultimate episode explains why Sumi, Miyo’s mother, decided to get married to the Saimori family. It all happened because the Tsuruki Trading business was about to go bankrupt. Sumi decided to accept a marriage proposal, which her father Yoshiro had kept rejecting due to the Usuba Clan’s rules, and the two became estranged after the wedding. When Miyo was born, Sumi learned upon touching her child that she has the rare Dream Sight ability which causes her to worry. Because of this, she decides to seal away Miyo’s ability so that she wouldn’t be used as a tool in the future. With the remaining time she had left, she lived her life as Miyo’s mother.
The Usuba family’s rules are wack. They have to be hidden and can only marry and procreate with the same blood (inbreeding). The fact that they want to keep Miyo in the manor and Arata is making his moves on her out of the Usuba duty and not actually his own feelings is pretty messed up. Like, both Yoshiro and Arata are so annoying. Yoshiro was spewing things about how much he cared about Sumi and Miyo, but if he cared about Sumi, he shouldn’t have gotten angry at her for her decision and should still have contact with her. If he had cared about Miyo, he could’ve shown up when Miyo needed it most. He didn’t contact Sumi at all throughout her marriage; he only contacted Miyo nineteen years after her birth. Is he only caring about her because of her ability and not her as a person? Miyo says it herself: What is family? They say they’re her family, but they’re not behaving like family at all.
Arata was spewing nonsense about how he has to carry out the Usuba family duties and how he and Miyo are similar in terms of them being hollow people looking for a purpose. To be honest, I find that an insult to Miyo. Miyo’s not “hollow” by choice; it was forced onto her due to abuse. He doesn’t care for her as a person; he only cares about her to fill out his purpose. Fortunately, Miyo’s immune to his guilt-tripping, so she’s not succumbing to his words. Arata seems like a very contradictory person from the way he said that Miyo’s abilities have to be kept secret due to his deal with the Emperor, yet he’s revealing her secrets about her Dream-Sight to the people tending to the unconscious Kiyoka. What a way to keep secrets.
Kiyoka was shown to be a powerful ability-user in Episode 6, but the fact that he got caught off-guard and gets knocked out by a Grotesquerie shows that these things are truly a threat. Though, it does seem like an abrupt plot-point so that Miyo can leave the house and find a chance to use her powers for the first time. Though, I’m glad that her first target is her husband-to-be so that they can finally make up.
Lastly, I really like the scenery in this episode. The scenes with Miyo getting her powers back was absolutely stunning. The scenes with Sumi were pretty too! I think that the scenery is one of the strongest aspects of this anime and I can attest to that. Every episode looks pretty and it’s hard to peel my eyes away from them.
I apologize that this review got out late; I was a bit distracted from reviews as the new Pokemon Violet DLC came out on Wednesday, so my time has been occupied with that. I finished the main story today, so I will write a review soon. Anyways, what are your thoughts on this episode and are you ready for the finale next week?
