Modern Backpacking 101: Trip Planning - Finding Great Destinations
Proper trip planning is the single most important aspect of a successful backpacking adventure, and this all begins with finding an inspiring and beautiful destination.
Tumblr media
Finding trails suitable for day-hikes is easy. There are many available - in almost any geographic location - that are suitable for the task at hand.
Locating wilderness areas that are ideally suited for backpacking is decidedly more difficult, as these areas tend to be much more isolated (yet also more rewarding) and as a result are more difficult to locate.
Please Note - This is just one post in a multi-part series, providing information on modern backpacking.  To find out more about this series, including what it is all about, please follow this LINK back to the "master" post - where you will find a compete overview of this series, including an ordered and hyper-linked table of contents (to sections as they are added).
Most people are well aware of the grandeur of Yellowstone, or the beauty of the High Sierras, but what if those wonders are not easily accessible to some?
What if you are located far from these beautiful places, but still hunger for the experience of hiking through the true wilderness? Where can you go on a quick weekend (or longer) trip to experience great time in the outdoors?
Chances are, there are more than a few in close proximity to you - no matter where you live - and here are some resources that can used to find them:
National Forests Almost all the national forest lands in this country (and there are a lot of them) are open to recreational use without permits or fees of any kind.
National forest lands contain vast areas of wilderness - some with marked trails, many trail-less - that make for a great destination of discovery. Due to the lack of any kind of amenities, they are also seldom used. Just the kind of place that attracts most backpackers - those of us who crave the solitude and beauty of a true place in the wild.
These areas are, however, also open to commercial interests.  Lumber is harvested, gas wells drilled, but for the most part they still offer a very good opportunity for plotting your next backpacking adventure.
Please note that the remoteness of most of these areas mean that cell phone coverage will be minimal to non-exisitent (I'm grateful for this!), so proper planning and prior experience becomes very important.
Here is a LINK to the US Forest Service's website, where you can find much more useful information - including rules, regulations and maps.
State Forests Very similar in nature to national forest lands, these state run areas are also open to commercial leasing, but still offer ample opportunity for recreational use. Usually they are overseen by a state’s department of environment conservation.
Restrictions vary wildly from state to state, so please do your research in order to ensure your success.
For example; here in the northeastern US, both the states of New York and Pennsylvania have extremely liberal use policies and ample opportunity. By contrast, New Jersey has very little to offer in terms of either quantity or quality.
Here is a LINK to a federal EPA page which - in turn - contains links to all of the state's various conservation agencies.
National, Regional & Local Trail Organizations National organizations like the Sierra Club and the American Hiking Society, along with regional outfits such as the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and Appalachian Mountain Club, plus numerous other local organizations, are non-profit entities who build and maintain trails for public use. These mostly-marked trails may not offer as remote of an experience as those highlighted above, but are still a great opportunity for extended trips - especially for those who need to gain experience.
They all offer a wealth of resources and information which can give you ideas for planning you next trip.
Here is a LINK to a VERY comprehensive list of these types of organizations.
While you are looking into these, please consider contributing monetarily - or better yet - volunteering your time to one of these worthy organizer, whose tireless toil give so much back to the public.
Internet Based Resources (Web & SmartPhone Apps) One of the nice things about the modern world we live in is that it makes planning of all kinds so much easier.  Most of us have convenient access to the Internet, to say nothing of the technological marvel of having a "super-computer" in your pocket at all times.
There are a wide array of websites and apps out there which can make finding the perfect destination quick and easy. I'll elaborate about two of the best, both of which are an invaluable resource to me.
AllTrails.com is a venture capital backed, web based app which describes itself as "The leading digital network focused on outdoor enthusiasts, providing 1 million people monthly with the information and tools to discover top destinations near them."
I find that this is a VERY accurate description. This resource is powered by one of the most comprehensive databases of outdoor recreation information that you will find anywhere. Its dead simple to use, and provides a wealth invaluable resources.  They even have a free app for your smart phone.  Highly recommended.
Yonder is a free smart phone app from a team based in Woodstock, Vermont.
They bill themselves as "A community of explorers and wanderers, of climbers and bikers, of skiers and hikers, sharing their love of the outdoors everyday".
Think of this as "Facebook for Lovers of the Outdoors"  It's tailor-made for backpackers and hikers, and really is fun to use.
I hope that I have given a good tutorial on how to get started finding great locations for your next outing, please check the table of contents in the "master" post in this series HERE, for more details as they are published.

This is a shot I took of the sunrise that I took the other day along with the time lapse that many of you saw a few days ago. It was quite a magical scene. Don't you agree? 😁 . So, something funny happened the other day. I answered a phone call from an unknown number which is something I don't usually do. The caller was a guy with a British accent. He went on and on with his sales pitch and I let him speak all the way through without interrupting so I can hang up. Next thing you know I had agreed to be on some kind of mailing list and after the call I immediately replied to the email so I can be removed from it. I must admit I was in a weakened state. Lord help me! If anything he could've been a car salesman and I would've bought it! 😂😂 Those accents get me all the time. Now you know, they should hire people with those nice accents to do sales calls. 😂😂😂😂 . #underatedgrams #adayinthelife #all_shots #agameoftones #artofvisuals #createcommune #the_best_shotz #createexplore #deftonysrealm #exklusive_shot #exploreeverything #feedissoclean #fatalframes #fartoodope #heatercentral #inspiring_photography_admired #illgrammers #instagoodmyphoto #instadaily #justgoshoot #master_shots #teamnikon #yonderapp #yonderon #yonderoftheday #landscape_lovers #landscapephotography #landscape_captures #landscapes (at 31st Street Beach)
