King of Prism SSS Episode 9 commentary (Alexander)
FINALLY!!!!! Finally I can talk about a few big things from this series I have been dying to talk about....
...............What did I sign myself up for.
A quick rundown of what it says here: More and more people are becoming interested in the street-style and choosing to be street-style stars since the Prism King Cup. In the graph, the gold portion is academy-style and the silver is street-style, before -> after the Prism King Cup. Below it points out that Kazuki and Hiro’s “sparking” scores from the Prism King Cup (the Prism Watch data) were equal and suggests Schwartz Rose needs to step up their game in the street category.
Every time I laugh at this.
Every time I feel kinda bad afterwards.
But
So Ace was entered as an official participant. It says “reserve”, but still. I guess that may have helped to make Joji’s score possible and not break the system.
(In between writing my episode 5 commentary post and now, I got to read the interview with the director in spoon2Di where he confirmed that Joji’s high score was only because Ace joined in what was supposed to be a solo show.)
Flashy, huh. We’re going with flashy this time for “charachara”.... Okay. (Better than gaudy I guess.)
I love this so much. Kakeru coming outside just to watch Taiga exercise and get all sweaty and all that. I wonder how long he stood there. Or rather I wonder how long he watched with binoculars after heading back inside.
I’m such a dumbass. After episode 3 aired someone pointed out that this is Taiga’s mom vs. Alec’s mom, and my excuse for not noticing then was that it’s in the background and such. (Can’t pause the movie in the theater and didn’t think to check it afterwards.) But here the camera actually pans over them slowly, so yeah I have no excuse.
But regardless. Amazing!!
Another thing I didn’t catch in the theater. But I have never had a reason to know the Japanese word for asthma before. I’m glad that gave him an actual reason for being sickly instead of just.... sickly child syndrome.
As long as you’re happy, Victoria.
But really though, their relationship is pretty damn interesting.
I wonder if she knows he borrowed her clothes.
No I don’t know why these grown-ass men have nothing better to do than pick on an actual seven year old child...............
So uh. This line confused me for the longest time. The way he says it, I really thought he was giving “Daikokuno” as another last name and I thought it was some kind of DJ KOO reference I didn’t get or something.
But thanks to Crunchyroll I finally realized.... ITS A PLACE. He’s just saying where he’s from, and that’s how Alexander is able to find him. GOOD LORD IM SUCH A DUMBASS.......... Another point for Crunchyroll.
HE BIKED ALL THE WAY FROM YOKOSUKA TO YOKOHAMA
Okay so now that I have the luxury to pause this, as soon as I did I opened up Google Maps in another window, zoomed in and....
WELL THEN
At least I finally know where it is
BUT DAAAAAMN
Fuck asthma am I right
It wouldn’t give me the cycling time, but yeah, you can imagine.
They only have this one image of Rei doing a jump and gosh darn they are gonna use it to the fullest.
So during this scene and the next people cheer for Rei in the theater, but nobody really knows what color he is. There was a whole lot of variation at the beginning before people (in Nagoya at least) finally settled on red. (For the flames maybe? I don’t know if it’s official.....)
Alexander actually had a flashback to this moment on Prism Rush during the Road to SSS 9 event. I reblogged it recently on my @prism-rush blog trying to disguise it as part of my Alexander birthday spam. (It wasn’t.)
YEAHHHHHHHHHHH BOY
So if you have no idea where the heck this egg came from and what it is..... Rainbow Live.
But anyway.
I can finally FINALLY talk about this!!! Even though I knew it would probably be all over Twitter, I really wanted to protect this spoiler on Tumblr if I could. It was such a big deal to me when I saw it in the theater and I really wanted you guys to have the opportunity to be as blown away as I was. I could not possibly think of anything to say about it that wouldn’t be a hint, so all I could say all this time was just that Alexander’s episode has “a surprise” in it.... SURPRISE!!!
But yeah, when I saw this for the first time I thought it just came out of NOWHERE. Total shock! I thought this was not predictable at all!
But then it hit me. All of a sudden I remembered something. Something important.
Again, in Road to SSS event 9....
So, for folks who follow my @prism-rush blog, remember that one Alexander PR where he was looking into a box? And nobody knew what was in the box? But there was something weird following him? I even mentioned it and my confusion over it in my summary of that event. WELL GUESS WHAT.
We finally know what was in the box don’t we.
I asked a friend to see the card story to fill in the blanks and see if there were any obvious hints to what was going on at the time, and it’s just mentioned as a strange animal he picked up. Alexander struggles with what to do and not really wanting to take care of it, but then he asks himself what Rei would do..... (Whether he could see Momo at that time, I do not know ahah....)
So in the beginning after seeing Part 1 in theaters I said on Tumblr that the Road to SSS events from Prism Rush didn’t have much to do with the SSS anime, and most of them didn’t and still don’t. All of course except for Road to SSS 9, just that one, which ended up being way more important than I would have ever imagined. And this isn’t even the only reason either, there is also--
SO UH anyway Road to SSS 9 took place in June, so this flashback is taking place in June DURING Road to SSS 9. A very roundabout way to dating the episode, but really cool. I like how Road to SSS was significant after all.
And another surprise for me. In the theatrical version he’s not glowing here. They wanted to emphasize that he’s powering up I suppose eheh. I was really freaking out about this in the stream chat. SO COOL.
To the right of his little dragon house you’ll see some “dorayaki” because.....
Although they never actually mention it in the anime, his name is Dorachi. (Confirmed on Twitter.)
(Note: Dorayaki is also the favorite food of classic Japanese character Doraemon.)
Even though Dorachi doesn’t talk in this episode, in the theatrical special video for Alexander he talks A LOT. An UNFAIR amount. So much I do not remember most of what he said since I only saw it once and it went by so fast.
But his real name is very long (like the manager names from PriPara) and he talks about spreading the prism sparkle. I’m sorry, that’s honestly all I remember right now.
Will he show up again in the main anime before the end?
(Okay yes.)
And at least they gave you guys was a bit of original(??) art of him in the new ending.
WHATEVER THEY MAKE OF THIS CHARACTER I WILL BUY IT
Okay moving on.......
Urrgh..... okay so.............. When I first was watching this with you guys in the stream I was like UGH because I don’t think “flashy” fits here at all. I really wished they had stuck with “playboy” since it would work better with this scene.
But then when I watched it again, I realized they already used “flashy” once in this episode to describe Kazuki’s sweater, and it did kinda work there.
If we go back to my episode 3 commentary, my main complaint with Crunchyroll’s translation of “charachara” was actually less about the words they used, and more about how it just wasn’t consistent.
This episode..... is consistent.
..................
................................
Another point for Crunchyroll.
I officially cannot complain about the subs in this episode.
Another little thing in SSS I have spent way too much time thinking over is how Joji got here.
In every episode up until now, it’s always been Louis seen walking beside Jin like his pet. But in this episode. JUST THIS EPISODE.... it’s Joji instead.
I think the reason is because Louis is performing next, so he has to rest (since he’s not exactly in the condition he once was.....) So Joji scooped up the opportunity.
Whatever the reason, I find it really interesting.
HERE IT IS
My all time favorite Alexander face
In a weird way I actually think he’s cuter here than in the Prism King Cup
This song.... was not quite what I was expecting for Alec, but I love it. No part of me anticipated he’d just launch into a ballad but WOW. I just love how they picked something that really shows off his beautiful voice like this. Alexander is in my top three singing voices in King of Prism (1: Hiro, 2: Taiga, 3: Alexander) so I loved hearing him belting this out.
Now time for my like.... 4th(?) embarrassing confession in this post.... I had no idea this song was a cover until like AN HOUR before this episode aired. You guys were playing TRF songs in the stream, the original came on, and while y’all were like “what should we watch next” I was sitting there like “!!!!!!!!FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF”
Well, it’s a new song to me. And I think it’s perfect for him.
Poor Joji and his inconveniently timed fruit.
He finally gets to spend time with Jin, and he just can’t get a break.
I love the generation gap here. Kazuki’s existence has been so big to Taiga he can only think of Kazuki. But Kazuki and Hijiri are able notice the subtle differences that make this an OG Rei move.
I could certainly spend a whole lot of text speculating why Alexander did not change into his battle suit, but I won’t waste your time and just admit I have no idea. I’m glad he doesn’t, since it keeps the spotlight on Alexander since HE CAN’T PERFORM ONE GODDAMN SHOW WITHOUT TAIGA BARGING IN ON HIM BUT MMMRGGHGHG
TAIGA YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER
Yeah I was SO MAD about this when I first saw it at the midnight showing.
A lot of people change to green when Taiga comes out, but I do not. This is the only battle where I cheer for Alexander the whole time.
Not only was I mad at Taiga for being so dumb, but just mad at the whole concept of Taiga barging into Alexander’s one show to do basically the same jumps we saw in Pride the Hero again.....
But.....
Nowadays I forgive my idiot son. And I hope you do too.
This wasn’t the moment I forgave him. No, that’s coming later. I was mad at him for an entire month. But yeah.
He’s just so confident and everyone believes in him................................
So Alexander breaks the street-style curse and gets a damn good score. Higher than Taiga’s original score.
But just like Joji’s score was due to Ace, I can’t help but think Alexander’s score was a good deal due to Taiga.........
I had a feeling this would happen.
I knew long before Part 3.
Even back when I had only just seen Part 1.... I just knew the tables would turn in this episode.
Maybe it would be difficult to guess by watching week-to-week, but for me having Alexander’s episode as the last episode of the theatrical Part 3 just seemed like it would be WAAAAAY too much of a coincidence otherwise. So I had a strong feeling Schwarz would come out ahead at the end of this one. (I didn’t guess the reason would be because Taiga would get a penalty, but yeah.) And especially because the performances are kind of out of order to make this work? Up until now I thought all of the Schwarz Rose boys performed first, but Yu was up before Alec? And Louis is up next. Maybe it wasn’t a guaranteed thing that the Schwarz Boys always go first, but I noticed it.
So up until now score has not mattered much as Edel Rose has just sailed on though. But now it does. It matters a lot.
So this is the second surprise of this episode, and why I was saying it’s the beginning of the chain of events that lead to the end.
But about score mattering now, one of the reasons I have been questioning Taiga’s score the whole time is because I knew this was going to happen. So I just.... I just hope Taiga’s score wasn’t lower to begin with on purpose for mathematical reasons so they could get their desired progression of the overall score or something. IDK.
I don’t blame Rei for not figuring it out right away. Even though I KNOW this is Alexander, I still have trouble connecting his younger and older selves. I mean, getting muscular doesn’t make your eye shape completely change does it....?
Poor Kazuki. He doesn’t care.
So if I interpreted this episode correctly....
This was Alexander’s official transition from an antagonist to a protagonist. (Or just to a normal rival at least.)
During the first two movies and for a good long time of Prism Rush, he always played the part of the villain. But once Road to SSS started that began to change. We saw him reminiscing about Rei, making awkward conversation with Louis, struggling over forming a duo with Joji, etc. So I had a strong feeling they were taking his character in this direction, but this right here was the official turning point I believe.
No more destroying stadiums. From now on he’ll be spreading the prism sparkle with Dorachi.
And still trying to beat Kazuki but you know.
So I don’t have a source handy (if someone challenges me to find one I’ll dig it up) but I remember I read one time that Alexander was actually originally a character that was only created for the first movie. But then they realized they had to keep him on when he was just so popular.
So if you have ever supported Alexander, this episode was for you. Fans make King of Prism possible.
So.... one more thing I guess. Something I learned from the Minato episode was that even if I ignore controversy and specifically state I don’t want to talk about it, it still finds its way into my inbox anyhow. So I might as well get this over with I guess.
After Young of Prism Alexander was revealed to have light skin, someone told me a theory that mixed race children are sometimes born with lighter skin which darkens as they grow older. So up until her design was revealed, I had always imagined Alexander’s mother as a black woman.
So yeah. I don’t know the reason for his darker skin color now.
But I’d like to point out that in this episode being pale was associated with being weak and unhealthy, while darker skin was associated with being healthy and strong and just leave it at that.
And thus ends Part 3.
Next week begins.................. what I have been dreading for a long time............
So...................
So up until now I have been pretty tight-lipped about spoilers. But once episode 10 airs, the floodgates will pretty much be open. Episode 10 and episode 11 are so connected it’s really hard to talk about one without the other. I mean, once you know about episode 10, I seriously might as well. So after episode 10 airs, at the bottom of my commentary post and after a warning I plan to share some episode 11 spoilers.
Because I have been through this......
And I know how it’s gonna make you guys feel......
And since I was lucky enough to get some answers right away, I’m going to give you guys those same answers for those who want them so you don’t have to just sit on episode 10 for a week. I am not that kind of a monster. I won’t put you guys through that.
So after episode 10 ends, take a deep breath, cry it out if you need to, and get some tea.
I know how you’re gonna be feeling. I know. Don’t send me a panicked anon ask right away. Give me a little time. Hold on.

Military projects gutted to fund wall

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The US Department of Defense is diverting an estimated $3.6 billion in military construction funds to help build President Donald Trump’s wall on the US-Mexico border.
The Pentagon on Wednesday released the full list of 127 military construction projects that will lose funds in order to help construct 175 miles of southern border wall.
The projects range from building training and ammunition storage facilities to fixing access roads to construction on a middle school in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, along with a subway station entrance facility at the Pentagon.
Just under $1.8 billion meant for US and US territory projects will be reallocated to the border wall. The US is also pulling funds from several overseas projects, more than $1.8 billion, including from construction at air bases in ally nations like the United Kingdom and Germany.

Pope Francis Names Two New Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS)
Fathers William (Bill) Muhm, CAPT, CHC, USN (Ret.), and Joseph L. Coffey, CAPT (Sel), CHC, USN, to be ordained bishops by Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio on March 25
The Holy See announced January 22, 2019, that Pope Francis has named two new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS). His Holiness elected Father William (Bill) Muhm, Captain, Navy Chaplain Corps, titular Bishop-elect of Capsus, and Father Joseph L. Coffey, Captain (Select), Navy Chaplain Corps, titular Bishop-elect of Arsacalitan.
Fathers Muhm and Coffey will replace Auxiliary Bishops Richard B. Higgins, who is retiring this year, and Robert J. Coyle, who was transferred last year as an Auxiliary to the diocese of Rockville Centre, NY. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, will ordain the two priests bishops in a solemn Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.
Commenting on the appointments, Archbishop Broglio said: “The Bishop of Rome has once again looked with pastoral solicitude on the global Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and recognized the need to assure adequate care of the 1.8 million faithful entrusted to her. I am delighted that both candidates have accepted to serve in a new way. They bring vast experience and deep pastoral solicitude to their new role.”
Father Muhm said: “I’m greatly honored and humbled to be chosen by our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Father to be a bishop of the Universal Church and an auxiliary bishop of the AMS, which provides Catholic ministry and spiritual services to VERY important Americans: service members, members of their families, cadets and midshipmen, civilians stationed overseas, and veterans at VA Hospitals.”
Father Coffey said: “I am humbled and honored to have been chosen by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to assist Archbishop Broglio in his duties as the chief shepherd for the AMS. I am extremely grateful to my three shepherds from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, Justin Cardinal Rigali, and Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, who have given me the necessary permission to serve on active duty in the US Navy Chaplain Corps for these last 17 years.”
Here follows additional background information on the two bishops-elect.
Bishop-Elect William (Bill) Muhm
Bishop-Elect William (Bill) Muhm, son of the late James and Anne Muhm, was born in Billings, MT, in 1957 and raised in Denver, CO. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Business Administration from Colorado State University in 1980. He attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, RI, and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Supply Corps in July 1981. After graduating from Navy Supply Corps School, he served aboard USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA-3), making two Western Pacific (WESTPAC) deployments, and an assignment to the Naval Air Engineering Station in Lakehurst, NJ. After release from active duty, he worked as an accountant. From 1986-1989, he also served as a Navy Reserve Supply Corps Officer.
In 1989, Father Muhm entered the minor seminary for the Archdiocese of New York, under the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program (CSP), a vocations partnership between the AMS and participating U.S. dioceses and religious communities. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, NY, and was ordained a priest in 1995 by John Cardinal O’Connor. Father Muhm served in the Archdiocese of New York at parishes in Ossining and Staten Island. From 1996 to 1998, he served as a Navy Reserve Chaplain with Fleet Hospital 22.
In 1998, Father Muhm returned to active duty as a Navy chaplain. His assignments included Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan; USS WASP (LHD-1), making an extended post-9/11 deployment in the Arabian Sea; postgraduate studies at Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, CA; Training Support Center Great Lakes, IL; 1st Marine Division, deploying to Anbar Province, Iraq; U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD-6)/CTF-76, homeported in Sasebo, Japan; 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Camp Lejeune, NC; and II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune. Father Muhm retired from the Navy on May 1, 2018.
Bishop-Elect Joseph L. Coffey
Bishop-elect Joseph L. Coffey, son of the late Dr. William F. X Coffey, M.D., and Roseanita Schubert Coffey was born in Rochester, MN, on May 31, 1960. He is the fifth of nine children and the proud uncle of 46 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews. He was raised in Philadelphia and is a life-long fan of all the Philly sports teams.
Father Coffey graduated from La Salle University in 1982 with a double major in English/French which included a year of study at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. After college, Father Coffey worked as a grade school teacher, a ski instructor in Switzerland, and in the automobile industry in Germany and Belgium for five years.
Heeding a call to the priesthood, he attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree (MDiv) and was ordained in 1996 by Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) in Moral Theology, also from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in 2000.
While still in seminary, Father Coffey was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua to enter the U.S. Navy Chaplain Candidate Program in May of 1992 with the rank of Ensign. He stayed in the Navy Reserve for the next nine years.
Following ordination in 1996, Father Coffey was assigned as an Associate Pastor to St. Katherine of Siena parish in Philadelphia, PA. After five years in parish ministry, he was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua for full-time active duty as a Navy Chaplain in September of 2001.
Chaplain Coffey’s duty assignments have included: Combat Assault Battalion, Okinawa,Japan; Division Officer and Command Chaplain onboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON(CVN 73), homeported in Norfolk, VA, with a 6 month deployment to the ArabianGulf; Command Chaplain at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May, NJ; MarineAir Group 39, Camp Pendleton, CA, an assignment that included a seven-month month deployment to Camp Leatherneck, Helmand Provence, Afghanistan; U.S. Navy Recruiting Command, St. Louis, MO; Command Chaplain on USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, with a six-month deployment to the South Pacific Ocean; and his current assignment is Assistant Chief of Staff for Religious Ministry, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA.

Top Stories 2018: Navy Operations - USNI News

USNI News polled its writers, naval analysts and service members on what they consider the most important military and maritime stories in 2018.
If 2018 made anything clear, it’s that the U.S. Navy noticed the increased Russian submarine activity in the Atlantic and won’t let it go unaddressed.
Much of the U.S. Navy’s major activities this year were focused on the Atlantic Ocean, on NATO allies and partners, and on boosting training and capabilities for great power competition.
This focus on Atlantic operations to push back against Russia was exemplified in the standup of U.S. 2nd Fleet. This Cold War-era command was disestablished in 2011, during a relatively good period of U.S./Russian relations and just ahead of the Obama Administration’s Pivot to the Pacific. Now, though, it’s clear the relationship has gone cold again, and much of the Navy is focused on the Northern Atlantic, the Arctic Circle and other waters not regularly patrolled since the 1990s.

The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group was the first to venture north of the Arctic Circle in nearly three decades, and it also spent more time in the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (GIUK) Gap than any recent CSG has. (CVN-75) and its escorts visited Iceland, U.K. and Norway and patrolled the North Sea and Norwegian Sea in the first “Dynamic Force Employment” deployment meant to keep adversaries on their heels by shaking up when and where strike groups deploy.
Part of Truman’s High North operations was the NATO exercise Trident Juncture 2018, which simulated a Russian invasion of Norwegian sovereign territory and the NATO Article 5 response that would follow.
Though much has been made of Russia’s increasing submarine threat in the region, 2018 also showed Russia’s willingness to challenge international law on maritime and territorial claims through their aggression against Ukraine in the Sea of Azov. Though the U.S. Navy cannot patrol the Sea of Azov, it has kept up its routine destroyer and aircraft patrols of the Black Sea – leading to a handful of times when Russian fighters attempted to intercept or buzz American planes.
Less talked about in 2018 was the Pacific or the Middle East.
Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Decatur, left, and Chinese warship PRC 170, right, during what the US Navy called an unsafe and unprofessional incident in the South China Sea on Sept. 30, 2018. After the Chinese ship came within 45 yards of Decatur, the US destroyer maneuvered to avoid a collision. US Navy photo, obtained by gCaptain.
China continued its aggression in the South China Sea, (DDG-73) and (L14). It also continued a push to install weapons and sensors onto artificial islands in the South China Sea, leading the Navy to disinvite China from the Rim of the Pacific 2018 international exercise.
Though the Pentagon said it would conduct more freedom of navigation operations (FONOPS) to push back against aggression and excessive maritime claims – including one this year aimed at Russia in Peter the Great Bay – military leaders also sought to downplay the FONOPS as routine and not worth drawing attention to.
On multiple occasions, the U.S. Navy sent a pair of ships through the Taiwan Strait. The Navy also sent (DDG-89) to sail near Mischief Reef, and (DDG-76) sailed near the Paracel Island chain.
In the Middle East, the Navy operated the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group in the Persian Gulf for the first three months of the year, but the CSG chopped out in late March and another carrier did not arrive until last week.

Despite the lack of carriers in the Gulf, the Navy still played a major role in the April 13 missile attack on Syrian targets related to researching, storing and employing chemical weapons. Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG-61) and Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Laboon (DDG-58) launched a combined 37 Tomahawk missiles from the Red Sea, while USS Higgins (DDG-76) fired 23 Tomahawks from the Persian Gulf and Virginia-class attack submarine USS John Warner (SSN-785) launched six Tomahawks from the Eastern Mediterranean. Joining the attack were U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps aircraft, as well as aircraft and ships from France and the U.K. The strike was the first time a Virginia-class sub had fired a shot “in anger,” or at an enemy target rather than a training target.
Readiness Recovery

Another major theme of 2018 was rebuilding readiness in the surface navy, after 2017’s pair of collisions in U.S. 7th Fleet that killed 17 sailors and highlighted major training, maintenance and personnel management shortfalls.
The Senate Armed Services Committee drafted a list of surface navy reforms that were ultimately included in the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act. Among the changes implemented were a requirement for surface warfare officers (SWOs) to use logbooks to record their time at sea, much like aviators do to ensure training across all times, weather, types of maneuvers and other factors. The Navy began issuing logbooks and requiring their use in September.
A study this year showed junior SWOs had major gaps in knowledge about basic ship handling and navigation, which led the surface force community to look at changing the SWO career path to include more at-sea time to build proficiency. The fleet continued to implement its own recommendations and those in the FY 2019 NDAA, requesting funds for schoolhouses, training tools and other reforms.

The Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center was active in 2018, pushing the Navy towards preparedness for higher-end warfare. SMWDC conducted the first surface warfare advanced tactical training (SWATT) exercise on the East Coast with the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, bringing the high-end training to the Atlantic fleet for the first time, as well as the first SWATT on the East Coast for carrier strike group escorts. Additionally, the Navy looked for time at sea to conduct other high-end training, such as leveraging the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group’s transit from San Diego to Hawaii as an opportunity to conduct a “Fleet Problems” open-ended live exercise against U.S. submarines and aircraft playing the red force.
Despite the gains made in some readiness areas, ship and aircraft readiness continued to be a challenge. Outgoing Defense Secretary James Mattis set an aggressive goal for the military to achieve an 80-percent mission-capable rate for fighters by the end of Fiscal Year 2019, and while the Navy began to look at what it would take to modernize its depots and its maintenance practices, carrier deployments were at a 25-year low as the force reset. Ship readiness challenges were also on display during RIMPAC 2018, when two amphibious assault ships – one in the main Hawaii exercise and one in the California portion – suffered engineering casualties and had to back out of the exercise. And the entire Littoral Combat Ship fleet remained at home in 2018 despite a plan for four ships to deploy to hubs in Singapore and Bahrain.
The readiness challenges throughout the fleet may have contributed to several fatal mishaps this year, including an ensign who was killed during small boat operations in the Red Sea, a young airman apprentice who was killed aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) when he was struck by the propeller of an E-2C Hawkeye, and two aviators who died in an F/A-18F crash off Key West after their jet was flying on a single engine.
The Navy’s top enlisted sailor stepped down in June in the midst of a workplace misconduct investigation. After the Navy first announced that Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Steven Giordano would be taking leave during the investigation, Giordano announced later that day he would retire. Russell Smith, a fleet master chief who was serving as the senior enlisted advisor on manpower, personnel, training, and education issues, was named temporary MCPON; two months later he was given the job permanently.
Around the globe, Adm. Phil Davidson became the new U.S. Indo-Pacific Fleet Command commander, Adm. John Aquilino became the new U.S. Pacific Fleet commander, and Vice Adm. Scott Stearney relieved Aquilino as the U.S. 5th Fleet commander. Stearney died Dec. 1 in an apparent suicide, and Vice Adm. James Malloy was quickly confirmed as the new 5th Fleet commander.
Sailors move the casket of the late Senator John McCain to a horse-drawn caisson after his funeral service at the United States Naval Academy Chapel on Sept. 2, 2018. US Navy Photo
The Navy also mourned the loss of naval aviator legends and influential lawmakers President George H.W. Bush and Sen. John McCain, who both had lasting impacts on the Navy and are both honored as namesakes of current commissioned warships – with McCain officially being added as a namesake this year alongside his father and his grandfather, who are honored by the USS John McCain (DDG-56).
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson kicked off the year with the introduction of his six-pronged approach for creating a “whole” naval fleet, and he ended the year by releasing an updated Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority 2.0 that outlines a plan to achieve that whole fleet.

U.S. Navy to christen newest Expeditionary Fast Transport Newport
The U.S. Navy has announced that it will christen its newest Expeditionary Fast Transport, the future USNS Newport (T-EPF 12) on 9 November.
Ceremonial practices for christening ships in the United States are one of the most important traditions of the Navy. The ceremony of christening new ships began in the distant past, and have their roots in Europe. Today, the christening of ships became great public events, with large crowds assembled to witness the ceremony with sparkling wine.
According to a news release, Navy will hold the christening ceremony of the future USNS Newport on Saturday, November 9, at the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.
The principal speaker is Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, President of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Mrs. Charlotte Marshall, a Newport native, will serve as the ship’s sponsor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, she will christen the ship by breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow.
“This ship honors the city of Newport, Rhode Island, and serves as a reminder of the contributions the community has and continues to make to our Navy,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. “Newport is a Navy town where many officers begin their careers and then return later for strategic training. It is right that a fourth ship will bear the name Newport to continue our long relationship, and provide our commanders high-speed sealift mobility and agility in the fight to defend our nation.”
The first Newport (Gunboat No. 12) was commissioned October 5, 1897. During the Spanish-American War, she received credit for assisting in the capture of nine Spanish vessels. The ship was decommissioned in 1898, but recommissioned in 1900 to serve as a training ship at the Naval Academy and at the Naval Training Station at Newport, R.I., until decommissioning in Boston in 1902.
The second Newport (PF-27) was commissioned Sept. 8, 1944 and decommissioned in September 1945 and loaned to the U.S.S.R. under Lend-Lease and returned to United States custody at Yokosuka, Japan, in November 1949. Recommissioned in July 1950, Newport patrolled off Inchon, Korea, screening during the landings. Decommissioned at Yokosuka in April 1952, she was loaned to Japan in 1953, and commissioned as Kaede (PF-13). She was then reclassified PF-293 and transferred to the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force outright in August 1962.
The third Newport (LST-1179) was commissioned on June 7, 1969. Assigned to the Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Newport alternated amphibious training operations along the east coast of the United States with extended deployments to the Caribbean and Mediterranean. She was decommissioned in October 1992, and transferred to the government of Mexico in 2001.
EPF class ships are designed to transport 600 short tons of military cargo 1,200 nautical miles at an average speed of 35 knots. The ship is capable of operating in shallow-draft ports and waterways, interfacing with roll-on/roll-off discharge facilities, and on/off-loading a combat-loaded Abrams main battle tank (M1A2).
The EPF includes a flight deck for helicopter operations and an off-load ramp that will allow vehicles to quickly drive off the ship. EPF’s shallow draft (less than 15 feet) further enhances littoral operations and port access. This makes the EPF an extremely flexible asset for support of a wide range of operations including maneuver and sustainment, relief operations in small or damaged ports, flexible logistics support, or as the key enabler for rapid transport.

What Is the US Coast Guard’s Role in the Indo-Pacific Strategy?
The involvement of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy is remarkably producing headlines. For the initially time, the USCG cutter Bertholf joined a U.S. Navy destroyer in crossing the Taiwan Strait previous March to demonstrate U.S. motivation for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Relatedly, the same USCG vessel also done a maritime work out with Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels in the vicinity of Scarborough Shoal last thirty day period. Yet another vessel, USCGC Stratton, which is also of the exact same dimensions and ability, is now deployed with the 7th Fleet primarily based in Yokosuka, Japan.
A lot of maritime safety students have attempted to describe why U.S. white hulls are now acquiring their way together the seas and shores of Southeast Asia. The most considerable argument is that Washington has to distribute its operations with other branches of its army assistance, the U.S. coast guard provided. Other individuals have described this in the context of proficiently countering the 3 sea forces of China — the navy, the coastline guard, and the maritime militia. Furthermore, U.S. Coastline Guard Pacific Spot Commander Vice Admiral Linda Fagan claimed that Washington intends to actively guidance the location via “law enforcement and potential-making in the fisheries enforcement realm.”
In analyzing every single rationalization to comprehend the character of the USCG’s deployment in the Pacific, it can be argued that these answers do not thoroughly capture the essence why the United States is now employing its white hulls. The idea of the distribution of procedure amongst its other navy services like the coast guard does not feel to benefit the id of the stated establishment, but rather oversimplify what it is necessary for. It is also important to spotlight that it is not just the U.S. Navy that carries the stress on your own in asserting freedom of navigation in the South China Sea many nations have by now despatched their navy ships and patrolled the stated waters as properly. Furthermore, to declare that the USCG will be made use of for maritime regulation enforcement is not a resounding inform-all rationale, due to the fact even in advance of China turned assertive, the location experienced been plagued with nontraditional security threats like piracy, armed theft, illegal fishing, and even drug trafficking, but the USCG ships did not make a daring and considerable contribution to addressing such threats.

That’s why, the question that needs to be answered is why Washington is bringing the USCG into the South China Sea, even with its current powerful naval capacity and the strong help of Western nations to its initiative of guaranteeing cost-free and open Indo-Pacific?
Japan’s Coastline Guard Model
As a backgrounder, it is worthy of noting that the exterior help for the advancement of coastline guards in the region is not a thing new. Thanks to Japan’s pacifist structure and imperialist earlier, it had been modern in using the Japan Coastline Guard (JCG) in developing maritime cooperation in Southeast Asia for much more than 5 decades now. Notably, considering that the JCG was to start with projected as a maritime company focused on security and environmental security, Tokyo had been prosperous in setting up secure maritime cooperation with littoral states along wherever its sea trade routes move. Notably, most of its projects did not just support the pursuits of Japan, but also benefited the region extra broadly. Likewise, in the context of maritime regulation enforcement, the JCG supported the establishment of coast guards in the region via ability creating steps, sponsoring ASEAN coast guards for training and seminars in Japan, and deploying JCG gurus in Southeast Asia. Last but not least, in reaction to China’s rise and intense conduct, Japan used white ships in the disputed Senkakus to illustrate that militarization in a territorial row would exacerbate the scenario and not be a remedy. This strategy has the moment once more set the normal for the claimant states in the South China Sea in making use of white ships as a substitute (other than for the Philippines in 2012 through the Scarborough Shoal stand-off).
It is in this context that Japan demonstrates how a coastline guard corporation — very low-vital but pertinent, effective in policing however not aggressive, and lightly armed but not provocative — can perform a protection part but remain open for cooperation. Thanks to this influence, individuals nations around the world found along Tokyo’s sea trade routes recognized the worth of white hulls and the very important part they can participate in in establishing maritime buy. Southeast Asian nations regarded that a coast guard’s functions are limited in guaranteeing protection, guarding trade routes against nontraditional security threats, shielding the marine setting, and preserving the maritime purchase.
The U.S. Naval Technique and ASEAN’s Reaction
In the circumstance of the United States, considering that it does not have the similar handicap as Japan, the Americans have embraced Mahan’s doctrine of the value of getting a powerful navy. The United States usually takes satisfaction in having the most formidable naval fleet in the total environment. Therefore, their cooperation with Southeast Asian nations around the world, especially with allies, is always tied to naval routines that mostly contain the United States Navy, like Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Teaching (Work out CARAT) and the Rim of the Pacific Exercising (RIMPAC).
Offered the U.S. position as the victor of Planet War II and the ruling hegemon following the conclude of the Cold War, the the vast majority of international locations in the area have been supportive of these naval war game titles. Having said that, because of to the increase of China economically and militarily, most of the Southeast Asian countries experienced been hesitant to pursue the very same degree of support for these pursuits. In 2016, Philippine President Rodgridgo Duterte even warned the United States that the Philippine-U.S. war video games that calendar year would be the previous, considering that it was dragging Manila into conflict with Beijing.
As expected, when Washington began conducting much more frequent flexibility of navigation functions (FONOPs) in the region, ASEAN customers expressed misgivings. These countries are worried that FONOPs could guide to an armed conflict with China. Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in certain expressed his unease with the existence of warships in the South China Sea he has usually underlined that slight error at sea could lead to war. In the scenario of the Philippines, irrespective of the frequent existence of China’s paramilitary forces in its occupied Thitu Island and its spot as Washington’s oldest ally, Manila right up until now has not expressed its entire help to the FONOPs.
With these responses from the leaders of the claimant states in the South China Sea, it can be perceived that the thought of FONOPs is tough for them to settle for because they have interpreted it as a direct realignment with the U.S. desire. Also, any routines that involve military companies are a little something these nations around the world fear could offend their important investing associate and huge expense spender, China. A 2nd possible factor is that the sovereignty sensitive countries of Southeast Asia really do not essentially have faith in the intentions of the Us residents however. In 2003, the U.S.-led method Regional Maritime Protection Initiative (RMSI) to safeguard the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS) strait was criticized by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore because of to the concern of sovereignty and hesitation to enable Washington to have the freedom to patrols and police their backyard.
Adopting Japan’s Coastline Guard Diplomacy Template
Understanding from Japan’s coastline guard diplomacy, the United States is now replicating what Tokyo has carried out. The USCG by now started off developing maritime cooperation with Southeast Asian coast guards, even ahead of its cutters ended up deployed this yr. In the circumstance of the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, their coast guard officers and enlisted personnel in latest years experienced been taking part in quick teaching classes in U.S. Coast Guard education facilities. What’s more, the United States Coastline Guard Academy accommodated cadets from the Philippines and Malaysia to sign up for its corps in 2011 and 2015, respectively.
In the Philippines alone, since Duterte came into office, there was a great upsurge of the quantity of coast guard personnel becoming sent to the United States to participate in coast guard linked teaching. According to Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) records, the typical selection of PCG personnel who have been funded by the United States for foreign instruction is roughly 60 in the previous three a long time. This is a significant jump from 2015, when only six PCG officers went to the U.S. for coast guard courses. Additionally, yet another bit of staggering information is that Washington, via its U.S. Protection Danger Reduction Agency and the Joint United States Military services Aid Group, was equipped to train far more than 1,500 PCG staff in diverse places in the Philippines given that 2016. USCG personnel taught and trained the PCG in different programs relevant to their roles as sailors in different capacities, as legislation enforcers, and even as crisis supervisors. Relatedly, it is also value noting that PCG just not too long ago inaugurated a $3 million legislation enforcement schooling facility funded by the U.S. govt.
Summary
Washington’s litmus exam for its borrowed coastline guard diplomacy was the maritime exercising concerning the PCG and USCG. By the mere reality that it was not disapproved of or criticized by the Duterte govt, it can be presumed that the white hulls and coastline guard functions are both equally acknowledged as a significantly much better option in courting the approval and support of other Southeast Asian leaders. The willingness of Southeast Asian countries to take this kind of cooperation has very long been built by the JCG and is now becoming extended to USCG as nicely.
Nonetheless, it is crucial to spotlight that in spite of the entrenched perception of the region with regards to coastline guards, these types of heat acceptance and have confidence in to the USCG would not be extended if Washington did not cautiously adapt Japan’s technique. The United States warrants to be counseled given that they did not just considerably assimilate the white hull method it took them yrs to crack the barrier of suspicion and eventually get believe in. And lastly, the most powerful motive for the cordial welcome to USCG vessels in the region is for the reason that Southeast Asian leaders have occur to take the idea proven by Japan that a white hull has additional leeway for beneficial cooperation that can’t be equated to aggression.
Jay Tristan Tarriela is a commissioned officer of the Philippine Coast Guard with the rank of Lieutenant Commander and is currently a Ph.D. prospect and a Japan Global Cooperation Agency (JICA) scholar at the Countrywide Graduate Institute for Plan Scientific tests (GRIPS) underneath the GRIPS World Governance (G-cube) Method in Tokyo, Japan. He is also a Younger Chief with Pacific Forum, Honolulu.

Attended yet another friend’s retirement ceremony...Gee, we must be getting old when we’re invited to more retirements than baby showers! We will miss the Merrys since we were also together at our previous duty station in Yokosuka, Japan and we’ve done the same swim teams and Boy Scout troops in both locations. Today Ben was one of the sideboys (It’s a faraway shot...I should have picked a closer seat). I also took a pic of the Seabee chocolate coin and mint. (at United States Naval Academy)

Incredible 'Spirited Away' Bath House Modeled by Japanese Sculptor
Now you can explore one of Hayao Miyazaki's iconic set pieces as an incredibly detailed model, thanks to self-taught Japanese sculptor Hiroshi Ito. The model depicts Yubaba's bath house, the centerpiece of Studio Ghibli's Academy Award-winning Spirited Away. The self-taught, Yokosuka-based artist made a wondrous recreation of the structure—entirely by hand—to show his love of the film. "Most importantly, I am a fan of Hayao Miyazaki's movies," he tells Creators.
The 42-year-old, who goes by Sorakio on Twitter, made the stunning 3D rendition with putty, plaster, and parts salvaged from model warships. The incredible detail comes from his own etchings, as well as these repurposed parts, which together make up 90% of the models. He then hand-paints each sculpture to bring it to life. He tells us this work unfortunately isn't for sale, but occasionally goes on display at anime fan exhibitions. He is currently working on another ode to Studio Ghibli, the antique shop from the Miyazaki-written Whisper of the Heart.
Check Ito's bath house below:
Ito also made an amazing palm-sized sculpture of Howl's Moving Castle.
