Twickenham Plantation’s history stretches back to Colonial South Carolina when King George II granted the land (20 miles from Beaufort SC) in 1732.
The plantation includes more than 2,500 acres in the ACE Basin west of Yemassee SC.
In 1860, Thomas Middleton Hanckel, a Charleston attorney, owned Twickenham and had 127 slaves. He was a signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession that led to the Civil War. The plantation produced 553,500 pounds of rice that year. Carolina Gold Rice made Charleston the wealthiest city in the nation in the 1800s.

at waffle house in yemassee and the waiter sits in my lap as i eat while nibbling on my ear at 2:46 AM. a serene expression of the acceptance of death washes over my face as i finish my fourth cup of coffee. i politely wipe my mouth with a napkin, pay my bill, and exit the building, immediately producing a gun from my pocket and shooting myself in the head in the parking lot killing me instantly.

Old Sheldon Church, Yemassee SC. A Chapel of Ease style church. So called Chapel of Ease because it was built in an area that made it easier for people who lived in a parish to attend church, but not have to travel to the far off Parish Church. So in a sense most modern churches are a Chapel of Ease.
Anyhoo, the English burned it down in 1779 to stop the “rebels” from using it. Then according to legend, In 1865 Union burned it down to punish the rebels. So basically the church was destroyed the first time because the residents were fighting to form a nation. Then, about one hundred years after the residents formed a nation, their nation punished them for trying to form another nation.
But, recent study and evidence suggests that the church was actually destroyed by recently freed former slaves who gutted and ransacked it for building materials for themselves. And that seems kind of circle of life kinda stuff, so I’m gonna choose to believe it.

Monkey Straight Outta Yemassee T-Shirt
The Monkey Straight Outta Yemassee Shirt brings a humorous twist to the wild situation that unfolded in the S.C. Lowcountry area. After 43 scientific research monkeys escaped in Yemassee, local residents had a lot of fun with the bizarre headlines and media coverage. This shirt features an illustration of a monkey with the phrase "Straight Outta Yemassee," mocking the monkey madness and the attention it drew.
