#Yellow fuck-off Renaissance turrets

Warning I’m about to get maudlin here folks, but having known Stirling Castle’s royal palace before they restored it, when it was all dingy rooms and scaffolding and the only trace of its former splendour the few surviving Stirling Heads dotted around local museums and shopping centres, and then to see it transformed in such an impressive piece of restoration genuinely gives you a sense of what it must have actually been like to have been alive in the early 1540s when it was being constructed for the first time- the same smells of new wood and fresh paint and all the hopes of the Renaissance- and I get so full of emotion about history and conservation every time I think about it
#I can't even imagine what it must have been like to see the Great Hall transformed in your lifetime#I've only ever known a Stirling where its yellow bulk looms over us at all times#And honestly as a kid I could have happily stayed in the hall all day- genuinely thought I was in Narnia on the dais#Whatever arguments you could have about the benefits of restoration versus preservation#Stirling is such an impressive achievement and I think the whole city has a right to be proud of it#Even if the tourism is a little bit intimidating at time#s#And some may disagree with me about that fantastic yellow lime wash on the hall#But I'm more confused as to why they haven't done the same with the palace- possibly it's to protect original paintwork#Ah if only the forework as constructed on the orders of James IV had survived intact#Now that woluld have been a sight to see#Yellow fuck-off Renaissance turrets#Right up my street#The soaring heights of Robert Carver's wonderful masses that they still play on CD in the Chapel Royal are also a bonus#Anyway#If you ever read any of my history posts and wonder why I'm waxing lyrical about every tiny detail of Stirling Castle#Know that I do it from love and am genuinely in awe of how lucky I was to live so close for so long#I should have visited more#Edit: I just realised bits of this may have made me sound like a massive royalist or some shit but please#I am not I promise I just like big yellow buildings in a Scottish style
