But the details of Sinwar's death also tell us a lot about the state of Hamas. Much like when U.S. forces discovered Saddam Hussein cowering in a hole, the myth about Sinwar has been busted. He was not found looking defiant and capable, surrounded by an elite bodyguard force in one of the luxury bunkers discovered in areas of Gaza like Khan Yunis. Sinwar was killed looking desperate, dirty, and disheveled, living in fear, running from tunnel to tunnel, rubbled house to rubbled house, with only a couple other men, in a district he had hidden in because the world told the IDF they could not go there.
He was not commanding a military force with any capability. He oversaw nothing.
He had the pocket litter of a bum: a pack of mentos, tissues, some money, and a fake passport with the occupation listed as employee of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Hamas is clearly broken. It clearly is operating without leadership, on autopilot and functioning as separate, disconnected guerrilla gangs completely unable to do organized acts.
Yes, Hamas could nominally elect and announce new leaders to replace Ismail Haniyeh, the Qatar based Hamas political leader killed last month, with another terrorist, someone like Khalil al-Hayya, who currently leads the hostage negotiations outside of Gaza. They could ceremonially announce a leader to run shadow operations inside Gaza, perhaps Yayha's brother, Mohammed Sinwar. Fanatical member of Hamas may still believe they can survive and one day win the war against Israel.
But peace for Israel and Gaza only ultimately comes if Hamas if prevented from regaining political or military power in the Gaza Strip.
Still, this could be the beginning of the end, though there is still a lot that must happen. If Hamas refuses to let the remaining 101 hostages go, the war will continue. If Hamas still has the guns and coercive power to include primary control of humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, the war will continue. If Hamas believes they can survive as a political or military power in Gaza the war will continue.

Hezbollah on Friday said it will "move to a new and escalating phase with Israel", following the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, in the Gaza Strip on Thursday by the Israeli military.
The Lebanese group, who did not mention Sinwar by name in their statement, said discussions on their new approach will take place in "the coming days" as it continues to engage in combat with Israeli troops amid an invasion of Lebanon.
It said the group had confronted Israeli forces in the vicinity and inside some Lebanese villages, including Qaouzah and Rab Thalatheen, by targeting the paths of progress, and "luring these forces into some advanced ambushes inside some border villages".
"Hezbollah continues to confront the Israeli aggression on Lebanon, inflicting significant losses on the Israeli army in terms of personnel and equipment, including both officers and soldiers, across all engagement fronts from the forward lines in southern Lebanon to positions deep within occupied Palestine."
The group said it has already introduced new weapons to its arsenal, adding that its fighters have used new types of precision-guided missiles and explosive drones for the first time.

@sombraluna I’m also a Jew. So your point about commenting to you as another Jewish person is bizarre, as if your tokenization makes you more reliable.
Also, your source of AJ is completely unreliable, as it’s a “news organization” completely controlled by and funded by the government of Qatar- who also happens to host the leaders of Hamas.
Now, to provide some counterpoints to your arguments:
Hamas completely does have distinct leaders! Have you heard of Yayha Sinwar? How about Ismail Haniyeh, Moussa Abu Marzuk and Khaled Mashal? Come on. Literally ONE Google search.
Also, Hamas was elected into Gaza, as a political and military entity.
As for the graves, that sucks man- but this has nothing to do with Jews as far as we are aware. There isn’t proof as to what group or who vandalized the graves, and the right wingers of a Germany have no issue defacing graves of Jews or Muslims, hence the picture of the grave defaced with a swastica- not exactly something Jewish people tend to deface anything with. Your use of it is an implication that you think Jews did it. Why would we a) draw a swastica, or b) draw a Star of David within the same cemetery, thus making the two symbols equivocal within the grafiti? Outside of that, Neo-Nazis in Germany would utilize the swatica to deface (and often do), and would use the Star of David as a double insult, as they view it as a degrading thing to be associated with.
Furthermore, the attack occurred late Friday, or early Saturday- during Shabbat, when no work is permitted for Jews. Your accusations without evidence are crazy and lean into antisemitism, when as far as I could find, the German police are still looking for the perpetrators.
Also, Jewish graves were also defaced in Germany-swastica present for that too.
Not to mention the crimes committed against Jews and non-Muslims in the name of “anti-Zionism”, which has really proven to be the dogwhistle of the year:
- pro-Palestinian group vandalizing US war cemetery in LA
- crowd swarming a plane to hunt Jews
- map of Jewish businesses to target published by BDS (hint: they got their inspiration from the Nazis, surprise surprise!)
- Hamas plotted a terror attack in Germany to attack Jewish sites
- false bomb threats used to purposefully prevent Jewish practice on Shabbat in the US (200 different locations)
- A 337% increase in antisemitic events since Hamas committed the terrorist attack of October 7th, starting the current war.
- 1 in 4 hiring managers admitting to discriminating against Jewish candidates
- etc
Now, as for ceasefires- Hamas attacked during a ceasefire (October 7th was during a ceasefire), and has in their charter that the murder of Jews as part of their goal in article 7, beyond just the >80% of Jews that are Zionists (don’t we LOVE a dogwhistle!)
Speaking of the atrocities of October 7th, here is a description of the actions of your “freedoms fighters” GoPro footage. And 75% of Palestinians agree with what occurred on October 7th. More information about the sheer scale of terrorism committed by Hamas can be found here with statistics ( per capital and otherwise) to further my point.
Also, why on EARTH should Gaza be governed by Abbas anyway? His approval rating in the West Bank is >20% and the man wrote a disertación on Holocaust denial. Not a good choice for either Jews or Muslims, according to the evidence.
And Hamas isn’t wanting to see a ceasefire, they want to remain in control, hence their rejection of Egypts offer towards a deal that would lead to a permanent ceasefire and their breaking of ceasefire rules through immediate rocket fires after the ceasefire was announced.
Hamas also steals aid from their own population, use rape as a weapon of war, branded child hostages, atook a 10 month old baby as a hostage, block the evacuation of Gazans by force, and purposefully builds military infrastructure in civilian areas.
As for war, it’s not peaceful. It’s not pretty. And no, war isn’t going to be proportional- because it’s war. It’s not a tit for tat schoolyard fight. Remember that Nazi Germany had more civilian casualties than Britain, did that make the Nazis the one in the right to you? It’s not that simple.
As for Netanyahu, he doesn’t make the best choices. But the difference here is that the civilians of Israel are calling for a new govt. with less than 10% of the population trusting him. The same can’t be said for Palestinians, per the aforementioned links of their approval of the terrorist group.
For more information on the Simcha Torah War between Hamas and Israel and some Israeli history check out the shorts and videos from Oren and if you decide you can’t trust the “filthy Jews” that you dogwhistle as “Zionists”, then may I provide you with some information from the son of one of the leaders of Hamas on their intentions.
seeing the symbol i wear around my neck as a sign of resistance now used as a sign of terror. this cannot continue. cease fire now.

Hamas Seeks "Moderate" Image As Leader Calls for Israel's Demise
Hamas Seeks “Moderate” Image As Leader Calls for Israel’s Demise
Gaza’s Hamas chief Yayha Sinwar said Wednesday that his terrorist organization will continue its campaign to fight Israel until it secures “the liberation of all of Palestine,” despite recent reports of Hamas seeking to moderate its outlook. “Hamas will continue in the path of Yassin for the liberation of all of Palestine — we will not surrender even a morsel [of the land]”, said Sinwar at an…

Switzerland: Israel bans Swiss diplomats from visiting Gaza over Hamas meetings
Via The Jerusalem Post:
Israeli authorities announced on Thursday that Swiss diplomats will not be allowed to access the Gaza Strip because of their ongoing contacts with the EU and US-classified terrorist group Hamas. Switzerland, a non-EU country, does not recognize Hamas or Hezbollah as terrorist organizations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon told The Jerusalem Post on Saturday that Israel declines to comment on the ban. A photograph of Hamas leader Yayha Sinwar and Swiss diplomat and representative for the Palestinian Authority, Julien Thöni, at a joint Tuesday meeting sparked irritation from Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, according to a report in the Swiss daily Basler Zeitung.
