how would you improve every okami boss fight [except yami it's already perfect]
i was thinking for ninetails they would plagirize more brush techniques than just galestorm, cherry bomb and icestorm, as well as be able to use their infernal brush without your input of bringing up the celestial canvas, maybe also let them use the fox rods against you as it's own rosary which would fire off like a minigun unless you bring flame to it causing the flame to spread all over ninetails and split them like thunderstorm to ninestrike
Ohhhhh interesting. Hmmm. I'll throw my thoughts under a cut
The Spider Queen...I don't know? I think she fits her role as a tutorial boss pretty well. She's obviously super easy, so much so she basically gets demoted to mini boss later. But I don't think that's really a bad thing, for most games the tutorial boss SHOULD be easy. They're just the player's first experience with enemies with a larger pool of health and a puzzle or gimmick to defeating them.
I can't remember if it's possible to two-cycle her or not? I feel like it is, but if not, then I guess that would be an improvement. Just something to make her less of a pain for returning players or new players who get the hang of her flower puzzle right away.
Crimson Helm, I'm not sure how I'd change them, but I think it'd be neat if the canine warriors played a bigger roll. Maybe have them fight along with you, even if it's mostly just for show.
Orochi, to the surprise of no one, just shows up too many times. His fight is kind of tedious to begin with. I don't think it's bad the first time. The fight is a fairly cinematic moment, and is posed as a final boss (sort of. Not so much in the fight itself, but you spend the first 3rd or so of the game just hearing about Orochi, feeling his effects on the world, and building to his fight, and there's been no mention of Yami iirc). So the length of the fight works. But then you fight him again. And then again. Honestly just cutting him from the rematch gauntlet would probably be enough, or finding some way to streamline the following fights.
Blight just. Man I'm not sure what it is but I do not like their fight. Least fav by far. I think it might just be that it's not very engaging. Blight really only has two attacks they do (the sword spin, and the little teleport dash thing) and they both lead straight to an opening to damage them. So if you're good at the mist timing, then they're piss easy, and it just becomes a slog waiting to drain Blight's hp. If you're not, then it's a pain in the ass, but it's a boring pain in the ass. It probably doesn't help that I don't find the mist technique all that interesting in a combat setting.
I don't know how I'd fix the fight necessarily. Some variety to their attacks would be a good start I think (they're the 4th boss!! You can give them more than two moves!!). I also think it'd be cool if you could make more use of Issun in the fight! He gets to play more of a roll in this dungeon, it's a shame we don't get to DO anything with him in the fight really!
Ninetails, my beloved, I don't really have many issues with. Love their concept, the fight is fairly fun, a good mix of being on the defensive before switching to offense. I love combat with a sort of ebb and flow to it. Ninetails is agile enough to keep you on your toes, but not bullshit hard either. Like you say, I think giving them more brush techniques to use could be neat. Feels a little odd to have fire in their arena, not to mention a fucking lava moat around the island, but they never use fire! Even power slash could work as a low-damage-but-quick attack to use when you pull up the canvas (making it harder to stop them, but not being too punishing in exchange). Don't know if you're the same anon as the previous Ninetails ask I just answered, hi hello I've been busy but I do think them being able to force the canvas open would be cool, but only if used sparingly, otherwise I think it'd get annoying.
Lechku and Nechku...hrmmmmm. Only really counting them as a unit, because the solo fight with Lechku(? Is that the twin we solo?) is more a story beat, and Shiranui makes it a quick run. Really cool tho!
Anyway, I'm really not sure! Next to Yami I've probably fought them the least. I think they do a good job forcing you to juggle two threats at once. I think it'd be fun if you could turn their attacks against each other more often. Like, it's funny to make Nechku's bomb blow up on its head, but it'd be more funny to redirect it to blow up on Lechku's instead. A lot of twin boss fights in rpgs have you directly use one twin to hurt the other (like a fire/ice type situation. Shoutout Twinrova OoT). Not very inventive of course, and I don't think it's really necessary, but I suppose if I were to change them, maybe that way?
Or the real - completely unbiased - answer of Let Oki Do More In The Fight.
