Pchem never ends... I have to start revising phase equilibria today which might be my most loathed least favorite chapter. I don't know, the diagrams just never clicked, but hopefully that'll change - there's still time.
ft. a new book! I've been really craving science fiction lately + I've heard great things about this one, so I'm pretty excited to dig into it :)

Is all queer sf/f YA, or does queer sf/f just get shelved as YA because it's queer sf/f, regardless of content 🤔

"I hate stories unkilling characters and have been firm on never doing it in my own sci fi series" do you mean that you're writing a sci-fi series other than your fic? If so, I'd love to know more about it! You're an incredible writer.
Yes and no and yes and no. I have two major projects I've taken as far as multiple drafts of novels. But whether either one counts as sci fi... Hm.
Project 1 is probably more fantasy — I always describe it as Chronicles of Narnia by way of Stephen King's It. It definitely has sci fi elements in that it's more interested in commenting on the contemporary U.S. than on the fantasy world — one character flees the U.S. for OtherWorld, one character flees OtherWorld for the U.S., one character only goes to OtherWorld so he can earn a place in U.S. society, and one character only leaves the U.S. so she can earn a place in OtherWorld. It also has that sci fi sensibility of wanting to know how things work, why different societies are different for good and bad reasons. That said, it's also a portal fantasy about characters using magic to travel between universes, so... marginal.
Project 2 is more like X-Men, in that it's more concerned with how teenagers would (mis)use the ability to shoot lasers than how the lasers work. It's largely about forming an identity and fighting real estate developers on behalf of one's family co-op, so urban fantasy if it's fantasy or low sci fi if it's sci fi. The relative sci-fi-ness of the universe is literally a minor point of contention between two characters (one's a science tutor who believes in experimenting with the chaos energy to understand it better; one's a devout believer who has Seen Some Shit and knows better than to futz around with these things) and I deliberately never resolve it. The superpower stuff is important and fun and influences the characters a lot, but unlike X-Men it's not a magic-school story and doesn't want to be.
Sorry that's kind of a non-answer. But I think stressing too hard over how a book will be marketed while you're still drafting it is like buying wallpaper for a house you haven't built, and that genres are just made-up marketing categories anyway.

Exit Plans for Teenage Freaks
YA contemporary + a little sff
follows a boy who suddenly finds himself able to teleport when he walks through doors, often against his will
and has to figure that out while dealing with a new crush, the end of high school and the queer club, and figuring out whether he definitely wants to train to be an ASL interpreter like his father

Occasionally I wonder if I fit the lit-fic bogeyman of the contemptible intellectual weaklings who only read SF/F, and it actually takes a moment to remember that I'm writing a dissertation on 17- and 18th-century British literature that has very little in common w/ SF/F.

Okay, so I complain about Webby getting Cain’d all the time, but it turns out he has the worst run support of any pitcher in the majors. Do better, Giants offense.

My SF novel finalist at the Trillium Book Award!
My recent SF novel, Le secret de Paloma is a Trillum Book Award finalist, in the children's books category.
I learned that my SF novel is a finalist in the prestigious Trillium Book Awards, an Ontario distinction. It is a very media-covered prize, so that brought a lot of distractions. My SF novel, Le secret de Paloma (Paloma’s Secret) is finalist in the children’s books category. As the three books are aimed at teenagers/YA, the name children’s book can be a misnomer. The Trillium Book Awards are…

Was Principal Chapman named after Mark David Chapman, or is it more like "we need a boring name for our Controller character, he's Mr GuyBloke"

that inevitable victorian thing: 3.25 out of 5 things
this one has me torn.
as a reader for pleasure, this is great. it's well-written y.a. fiction with great extras: polyamory! super gay! tons of shiny goodness things!
as a politically conscious reader: this is a book about rich people getting horny and getting away with marginal romantic/sexual living as if they discovered it. frustrating.
some spoilers:
i loved reading this book. a royal heir and two middle-upper-class heirs get romantically involved and end up inventing polyamory. as a reading experience, it's accessible, paced well, and you can root for the characters; they're decent people. politically, though, you can't ignore that they're a bunch of rich kids getting away with romantic/sexual hijinks as if they were inventing it from scratch . . . is polyamory an affectation of the rich? are ordinary people not worth exploring? it's fun, and it's a great scifi exploration of a novel setting (what if the British enpire didn't fall apart and embraced ethnic diversity instead of remaining super racist?), but i can't ignore that it's about the pleasure exploits of the rich and high-class. there's a brief flirtation with "lower-class" experience, but those characters are not at all central.
the book does capture its setting beautifully -- the experience of the north of canada, the anxiety-provoking experience of high society -- and its emotional and sensual scenes are expertly written. if you are a horny teenager, this book for sure has what you're looking for. again, super gay, a big plus. but ultimately it's about rich people and rich people problems. a toss-up. it has the vibe of desiring to be radical but falling short of what that would actually require. enjoy it if you are so inclined.
