10. Tyla - Water

Water sounds like nothing so much as the romance novel version of the last night on a Caribbean holiday; the twitchy afrobeat rhythms feel slightly mischievous while the vibes are relaxed and extremely seductive. There’s plenty of fun to be had singing along to the group chorus but it’s the innocent charm of Tyla’s performance that really carries the song. Though Tik Tok is not really known for producing lasting careers, I’d like to hope she’ll go a long way.

9. GAYLE - Butterflies

It’s fair to say that the abcdefu star has done little of note since her moment in the limelight but Butterflies is a surprise banger and might well be the best song on the already stacked Barbie soundtrack. Yes, it piggybacks on its pilfered Crazytown interpolation but GAYLE’s rapid fire vocal and fierce pop energy carry the day and make a good case for her working more often with this harder edged approach.

8. beabadoobee - The Way Things Go

Bea’s sweet-toothed multigenre world has crept up on me more as the year's gone on but she’s never sounded better than she does on her most recent single. Her farewell to a dying relationship is given life by a delicately resigned vocal and set to an orchestral swirl so otherworldly that it entirely rubbishes her claim to be “not far from the ordinary”. There’s even a bit of a Harriet Wheeler impression on the outro to get the indieheads all teary, proving that beabadoobee is truly a renaissance woman.

7. Tate McRae - Greedy

Always better when she ditches the sadgirl songs, Tate’s swipe at sleazy old men instead rides atop a wonderfully rolling rhythm and sports the kind of sticky hook that will still randomly pop up in yr head in 20 years time. This is played about once every half an hour on the radio at the moment and yet it's never made an unwelcome appearance, in fact it’s the song that I’d rather hear there more than anything else.

6. Doja Cat - Fuck The Girls

While her hits cast a softer tone on what has become a totemic and obsessive personal crusade, Fuck the Girls was perhaps the most strident assault yet in Doja’s ongoing war with her annoying online stans. While the battle itself is probably not that compelling, Doja’s take on it is furious and funny enough to hold my interest and the rattling breaks and twitchy stand-up bass provide a hauntingly austere framework from which to launch her barbs. Truth be told, it just goes incredibly hard: what more can you ask for?

5. Charli XCX/Sam Smith - In The City

In The City feels like Charli moving away from the Crash era, focused anew on 90s club culture and with that hard edged bass synth powering everything along. But more than anything, it’s a glorious shot of light, full of yearning and surprising melodic beauty, and with a happy ending out on the dance floor that - surprisingly for Charli - does not involve a car. And Sam Smith is good! Not bad like you think! Shut up over there!

4. Poppy - The Attic

The Attic represents the cleanest example of Poppy’s pivot back to pop this year, for once ditching the goth adornments and going full on euphoric drum n bass. For someone who’s music often creeps and lurches along, The Attic is a surprising blast of musical weightlessness, full of skittering rhythmic energy and flashing piano chords. The lyrics as ever tell a different (and far more uncomfortable) story but by once more casting aside the idea of what a Poppy song ought to be, she’s made something new that blew me away completely.

3. Mitski - My Love Mine All Mine

The surprise hit of a major artist’s career has always been a tricky area to navigate: for every Walk On The Wild Side there’s tended to be an equal and opposite My Dingaling. However, Mitski has managed to luck out here, with international success neatly falling into the lap of one of her very best singles. My Love Mine All Mine sounds like a sepia tinted 50s ballad, simple and elegant, with each flourish of piano or guitar cutting eerily through the song’s low-key veneer. And Mitski herself has never sounded better, the sombre warmth of her vocal seeming to express all the ambiguity that radiates from the heart of the song.

2. U.S. Girls - Tux

Sounding for all the world like a classic era disco 12” that Meg has just happened to find down the back of the sofa, Tux also profits from an extended lyrical metaphor that’s so complicated and yet catchy that you’ll be singing along to every word before you’ve figured out what any of it means. Rare is the album cycle where U.S. Girls don’t release a top tier single or two and Tux manages to continue that very long winning streak. 

1. Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire

I can’t honestly say that Olivia Rodrigo’s theatrical disco banger stands way above everything else here (do not let anyone tell you that 2023 has been a bad year for music) but Vampire still hits hard all these months on. It’s a song that’s full of breathtaking moments: from the doof doof of the bass drum at the end of the first chorus to the surging harmonies in the second; the full-on sound assault that hits halfway thru to the rousing final step into “the way you sold me for parts” at the end; each one feels like a gut punch and yet they just keep on coming. Despite having listened to it many many times since the middle of this year, it hasn't even started to get old yet and is still perfectly capable of stopping me in my tracks. I’ve already said plenty about Vampire before so I won’t drag this on for too long, but in a year that perhaps for the first time has been more pop than rock for me, It feels fitting to have a record sat atop of it that embodies the best parts of each without ever feeling strained or clumsy, from an artist who spent 2023 truly finding her voice.

It's the final countdown!

It's less than two days until Young Royals Week, so I wanted to give a short overview of how the posting will work. That way, if there are still questions, we have time to hash those out!

For this overview I'll focus on the posting itself - for more general information, take a look at the FAQ (or visit our ask box!)

I have a Tumblr account- how do I post? Make a new tumblr post that either contains what you created, or contains a link to the content on a different platform (e.g. a post with your artwork, a link to a fic on ao3, …) and tag it with #yr week 2023. If you want to, you can also add a day-specific tag (e.g. #yr week 2023: birthday) , but that is for cataloguing purposes only - I will not track those tags.

Small Circle, Big Circle

Friends are the family members you can choose, so choose intentionally.  Most of my life, I’ve been an introvert but because of the nature of my work, I really have to harp on small talks and be comfortable in a big group. UGH. Since I live by MBPT and Enneagram, I exerted all possible social experiments to make my personality more attuned to what the clients and stakeholders and my team mates need. EME. The past years, results have been weird and curious: I’ve been getting E or I and yes, even my Enneagram results are hahahaha. ‘Wag ko na reveal kasi that’s beside the point naman. ‘Di pa uso ambiversion, ‘yun na ang result ko kahit gusto ko na sa introvert side pa rin ako kasi alam ko, introvert talaga ako. Period.  Though I seem to have a big tribe with a vibe (LOL), truth is my circle is very small. Friends who know the real me know I hate small talks and that wala talaga akong pake sa earth sa mga bagay that don’t matter to me. Kahit ano pa ‘yan BUT napansin din nila na I’ve changed for the better and I have been changed for good. Chz.  Sabi nga, the 5 people you spend most of your time determine your future. So, countdown natin ‘yung Mythical 5. Also, a good number of studies validate that you don’t need too many friends para masabing you’ve a well-lived poppin’ life. Actually, 4 real friends lang target ko kasi, ‘pag wala ako sa work, gusto ko lang ng tahimik though mahilig talaga akong mag-absorb ng stories in general, lalo ‘yung mga wala sa grasp and peripheral ko.  My first super friend is YR. We met back in Manila Doctors, freshies in BSN. :D We didn’t really match kasi super geek niya and focused sa acads as a science high school topnotcher. I remember na we started becoming closer kasi both of us are from the toll kingdom, South. Later, when we had another close friend na academically-challenged, siya ‘yung naging kunchaba namin sa pabebe finals cheating para ‘di malaglag ‘yung friend namin. Ako naman taga-distract sa prof. LOL. Sobrang kahihiyan kasi test of friendship and collaboration ito. Since Algebra ‘yung exam, nagdasal na lang ako na since ayoko mag-cheat, sana kahit pasang awa lang, matawid ko ‘yung exam dahil ambilis naming sinagutan ‘yun para may time mangopya ‘tong other friend namin. Not proud of this moment pero I saw that YR is selfless and hindi lang siya grade-conscious. LOL. She merely enjoys sucking in all information as a geeky gamer girl na napaka bilis magbasa and maraming talents.  Since she moved to Cali na, our bond changed. Mas bongga. Parang nasa Gatch pa rin siya since we don’t see each other din naman a lot even nung nasa Pinas siya. We’re too busy and talagang hindi pasok ang sched. She downs triple shifts without remorse. Ako naman noon, akala mo may-ari ng company kung makapag-OTY even on New Year and long holidays.  YR was my mother dragon’s best nurse. Nagkataon or sinadya yata niya ipa-admit si mom sa floor nila during mom’s last mega hospital accoms. During my down time, in a deserted corridor, YR told me to cry naman and that she won’t go near me. Sa opposite side lang siya para near enough, but not too near. She waited for me patiently kahit gulo-gulo na buhok niya sa dami ng tasks sa floor.  I was able to cry with shaky shoulders pa. I asked her a stupid question: How much time does mom have ba talaga? Tell me. Straight up. She literally straightened up and bwelo muna. She said: Death is constant. That’s something that we manager here everyday. Tita dragon’s case is going down soon. You and I know it. DL ka kahit 1 year ka lang sa MaDocs, so, alam mo ito. Gusto mo lang marinig. See? She’s on triple dose na on potassium and sodium; that’s not normal. Alam mo rin ‘yun. Dati, ambilis niya makarecover. Now, almost coma na ulit, ilang days na tayo swero mode. In between uhog and luha, I said: Siguro if I chose the nursing path, I would have been a better one sa quality ng pagaalaga sa nanay ko. She frowned and mocked me: Huy. Badge lang and basic care skills pinag-kaiba natin. You might have left nursing school, pero, you are doing more than enough. Stop blaming yourself. Natural decline si tita dragon. Also, hindi ka bagay sa nursing, bitch ka e. Sungit mo for sure. Ako nga, patient na tao, pero ubos na ubos, sagad na sagad. We laughed. We hugged it out a little.  After years of being a geriatric nurse in SG, nag-shift gears ang accla. She now works for FitBit and Google. Opak. :D She eggs me to give Cali a try kasi raw, it’s my vibe. US was never in my bucket list because even in the neutral Cali, I can’t stomach racism talaga lalo toward Asian and gay hate. First world na feeling progressive lang. LOL. Ako lang ‘to a. Ako lang ‘to.  Recently, she is the half of my palliative care Polaris along with R, my doc cousin in looking after my ina. If it weren’t for YR and our “walang makakapigil sa time difference” selves, seryoso, wala na ako sa ulirat. Since YR knows me too well, alam niya rin how to manage me and my well concealed self. Gago ‘to e. Our Discord channel says #salitan-ng-shit. Hahahahaahahah. Ganti sa akin sa lahat ng shit I took in as far as her love life is concerned. Lasog naman siya sa akin sa mga katanghan niya to the point na my RBF can’t come through. YR and I are four worlds apart sa love life. Siya todo. Ako, non-existent ang pake. Hahahahaha. But, I cry with her and push her to get back on track. Even when all my reasons are laid out, ‘pag may gusto siya itawid as an ultimate fighter in the name of love, enabler ako. HAHAHAAHAHAA.  And when the time came na sabi ko suko na ako kasi I cannot na talaga and that if magka-hubby siya, ok na hindi ko na lang kausapin hub niya, because the leads she is getting, tangina. Puro ugh. So, nung one last push niya, I even convinced her mom na payagan siya even when ako mismo, ayoko siyang ma-hurt na naman. Sooooo, anong ending? Out of all the boys she loved (all the way) before, her hub and I are totes vibin’. As in! Tawang-tawa nga hub niya ‘pag sa harap niya nagpapasalamat kami sa existence niya kasi malamang FOMO na kami kung iba naging hub niya. Syempre as a Gen X tito, the hub just gives us a sly smile and says OK. LOL. Kidding aside, in every shit hole YR had, todo dasal na lang talaga ako for divine intervention kasi eto naman ‘yung pitfall niya.  Hub loves Binondo, sneaker hunts, craft beer, camping out, cooking, reddit and wait for it... biking. Kaso ang lala mag-bike neto. Dirt kung dirt. He’s also a sound engineer so, pasok! :D Though sabi ko rin kay YR, girl, kawawa ka naman sa dream life mong mag-stay home to read books and sa outdoor adventures mo. YR adjusted so much sa lifestyle na outdoors ng hub niya. May one time na nag-message siya sa akin and said thank you and love daw niya ako kasama si R and their pet kid, T. Sabi ko tigilan niya ako. Sabi niya, nasa middle sila ng death-defying sandstorm. Pota. Sabi ko bakit naman kasi andun siya as a klutz and tamad being. Sabi niya all for the hub. Sabi ko, fine. They need to stay alive for T dahil walang ibang pawrents for T except them. And that, pupunta pa ako ng Cali kahit ayaw ko, kaya ‘wag silang aayaw. She teared up daw and signal gone.  Endless hours later, she sent me a photo na puno sila ng dust ni hub. Sabi ko, tangina nila. Hahahaha. At umuwi na sila at ‘wag masyadong slay ang idea of adventure into the unknown PLUS they lived to tell the tale. ‘Di ko ni-call out hub kasi mabait na ako. LOL.  Another test of Cali-Manila friendship na walang makakapigil is when YR’s dad caught COVID. She really wanted to fly back. Hub reached out to me and asked what the real situation in Pinas was. Sabi ko sa hub: Ayusin mo utak ng asawa mo, in full English, because he’s half Jap-half Fil but born and raised in Hawaii (vibe!) so napapa-English po tayo na contextual ‘pag eto kausap ko. He told me that he’d do his best and I told him, please be gentle but super firm since wala sa hulog si YR as a breadwinner unica na love na love ang parents niya.  I assured YR na isipin na lang niya payback time ito nung time na siya naglook after sa mom ko ages ago. Since sobrang ayaw namin ng favors na pakak, ginawa ko na lang ‘yung argument na: If you come here, wala rin chance na makakapasok kayo. Period. Been in touch with my friend from tourism-Red Cross, ang even sila, hindi talaga kaya ibangga borders. Also, flights are off the roof because capitalism is the name of the game. Mahal umuwi plus if the dad’s condition escalates, convert na lang niya flight funds to health funds. She told me that I’m doing something that is out of line since lockdown nga. I told her that ako pa ba? And that since a few villages apart lang naman kami, gagawan ko ng paraan. She cried and I said, basic. LOL. Natawa siya. Wala siyang choice kung ‘di mag-yes. Hub backed me up and told her that kahit ano magangap, triple team kami even if they need to have emergency loan. Since nasa Fintech ako, ems, sabi ko, please veer away from any emergency loan because mortgage in the the time of pandemic = ughhhhh. And makinig sila sa akin because I know the game. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Mhie, atikabong English na naman po tayo pero in the end, pumayag naman.  Syempre, kahit I don’t believe in vaxx, I got them kasi need ko mag-move around and eventually, ‘pag puwede na, mag-travel. LOLOLLOL. Wala na akong paki if ma-alter genes ko kasi gusto ko ring maging mutant in this lifetime. Punta kami ni dad as a damay sa groceries to get loaded. LOL. Then, punta sa house nila. Hiyang-hiya mom ni YR and I joked na: Tita, sorry. I can’t hug you now ha. Iyak-tawa siya. And she thanked me. I then assisted the two parentals sa abot ng kaya namin ni YR + hub during this crazy times. Natawid naman. Naghihintay pa rin now dad ni YR ng apo sa kanila and that bit allowed him to power through the COVID challenge.  As DINKs, YR + hub are unshaken. LOL. Another story to tell ito.  The past month, nag-DM si accla na mag-video call daw kami this 2023. Of course, ayoko. Pero sabi niya, life is short. We are getting older daw and that we ought to spend more screen time with feelings. LOL. So mga once or twice a week, we exert the effort to see each other’s basura faces. Hahahahaha. Been weird pero sige na nga, hayaan na natin ito because wala namang issue. Sanay na kami sa vidcalls ‘pag kailangan so, sige. PUSH.  Also, iniisip kong pa-edit sa kanya mga posts ko kasi matutuwa siyang ibash ako at mag-full on grammar geek ‘yung for sure. Plus, makikita na niya na I’m improving in terms of emotions management na wish niya sa akin since 16 going on 17 kami. LELS. 

------  Friend 02. My best friend. Male. A few years younger than me.  Eto ay super come from behind friendship kasi nag-start lang ‘to nung isabay ko siya umuwi to Las Pinas dahil muntik na siya malaglag sa manhole sa sobrang lasing. Jusq. The night after, kinamusta ko. Sabi oks lang daw siya tapos naging crush na niya ako. Takte. Syempre, wala siyang maasahan sa akin. LOL. At all. Kahit manigas siya.  Even when todo hirit ito noon, we have really good long talks about life kaya mas naging bros before ho*s kami. He eventually moved on kasi nagka-relationship na ako with a girl and sabi niya, hassle kasi masakit pala ma-reject because of a girl. HAHAHAHAHA. And that, more than the heartache, shattered ego daw siya.  I super love our straight up connection talaga kasi with him naman, nakita ko talaga full effort and ayoko sa kanya kasi alam ko lahat ng kagaguhan niya tapos biglang ako naging target? In all fairness, matino siya sa akin kaya nga, nung mga negotiations era namin, dami niyang kuda na ‘wag ko raw gamitin na reason na gago siya kaya siya rejected kasi nag-adjust siya sa akin. Truth naman; however, wala pa rin akong pake kasi sayang friendship namin. As in.  One of the best things na napa-realize niya sa akin is that my default is making people special even when they’re not. Isang hinga lang niya ‘yan sinabi. Sobrang parang sinampal niya ako. I told him na ‘di ko naman ‘yun sinasadya and he said ‘yun na nga. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Alam niya naman daw na wala lang talaga siya sa akin and super dense ko na parang bato sa ilalim ng Mariana Trench so ako raw may problema. Sabi ko ulol siya. Hahahahaha.  His family also adopted me as their unica hija. Opak. As in super spoiled but with stricto super traditional parents sa house. Whenever I miss homecooked meals, either magsasabi lang ako or when may luto sila na alam nila fave ko, DM is the key. As a Tamagochi baby, ‘yun talaga clickbait nila sa akin. Then, sa bahay nila, as in guarded ako na bawal umuwi ng late, mag-siesta, be on time sa lahat, don’t skip meals, soooooo I don’t visit often. LOL.  Our super test of friendship is when we decided to co-parent A. Sobrang bait ng asawa nito. Kasi tanggap niya na kami ng best friend ko, inseparable with no benefits at all. Hindi kami throuple ha. No way. Kadire. Hahahaha. She loves me too much din. LOL. Because, why not?  But, hindi pa natapos doon since namatay ‘yung Kuya niya. Before I left Manila, I specifically told C, A’s kuya na magpa-hospital. UGH. A few months later, A called me and said na A’s condition worsened. Sobrang iyak ko nun kasi I can’t readily fly back but sabi niya, no need. 17% na lang functioning heart ni C that time. Sinabi ko kay A: Tangina ni C (I don’t call him kuya kasi we’re almost the same age). Gago siya talaga. C died at 39 and the parents didn’t take it well but as boomers, they are powering through. Hence, naging official na akong adopted daughter sa G household. And ‘pag nasa Manila ako during Christmas time, I push myself to spend it there kasi C’s birthday is on Christmas Day. UGH.  A is my troubleshooter lalo ang messy ng concept maps ko sa life. He is also my lead auditor sa love life. HAHAHAHAHA. Wala pang pumasa sa kanya. Siya kausap ko ‘pag matindeng timeline ng mga problems kasi parang bullet point yung usapan namin. ‘Pag kasi si YR kausap ko, sobrang daming liko-liko. Etong si A, very detached and very warm din. Anything car-related or deliveries na hindi ko ma-manage kasi nga sobrang ugh ng sched ko, siya ‘yun. More importantly, A reminds me to celebrate how far I’ve gone and how much more ground I need to cover. LOL. We’re not clingy rin kaya sobrang oks neto. But, I super love his wife more than him talaga.  ______ Friend 03. My unexpected ate.  Since alta ito, I didn’t give us a shot noon. Hahahaha. I won’t disclose na lang a lot of her profile kasi she is in the biz of early childhood education. LOL. Lowkey naman ito but, better safe than SS with resibo.  All my life, ate ang role ko borderline mom, too. When we met, she was super unassuming. Then, naging close kami when I spent time sa house nila and woke up na gusto ko ng therapy dog to help me cope sa mom ko. Her mom asked me: Sure ka, hija? You will take care of the dog? It’s a big responsibility ha. Me: Yes, tita. I’m sure. Though wala pa po akong dog talaga na naalagaan, I am sure I can do it. N smiled and said, they’ll help me out. Hindi love life pinag-pray ko nung nawala mom ko. HAHAHAHA. I wanted a dog that does not bark. LOL. I know it’s impossible, but in God and my saltik, all things are possible.  Vici, my firstborn was from the best friend of N’s mom. Actually, ‘yung mga kapatid ni Vici, nasa AAV. Hahahahaha. Sabi ko nga kay Vici when we brought him home sa Bronx: Sorry ha? ‘Yung mga kapatid mo shala, ikaw, shuta. LOL. Pero we will take care of you here. Promise.  Since I met N in the community, I was more open (akala mo naman open talaga) sa feelings ko. Since N is a pre-school teacher, her patience with me is off the roof, to the moon, across the universe pa. We don’t see each other madalas pero when we do, kahit simple coffee lang (without vape or yosi), sobrang solb.  N as a low-key alta makes me see that having a lot does not mean you have it all. She is so grounded talaga tapos magaling mag-Tagalog kaya ‘di ko na need mag-adjust. She also helped me and my dad move on. Her best line: Alam mo ba tawag sa mga namatay na magulang like me? Ulila. She stopped and bwelo: Love your dad. He’s the only parent you’ve got. Damn that alta girl. HAHAHAHAHAH. Walang palag e.  I asked her many times na buti she can take my shit. Sabi niya, she likes how real I can get, something that she does not come across often. So, damong ligaw pala ako. It’s giving Sanchai. LOL.  In my lola’s last chapter, since nadaanan na niya ito on steroids nga lang kasi, mhie, ang grabe nung sa kanya, she held my hand without holding it and told me na I need to prep myself because PTSD is real. She patiently waited for me to open up and gave me lessons na pang-pre-school levels as to how I should take care of myself before taking care of others. OPAK. Very prep po tayo. It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to let go. I’m not a failure na naman in this eerily similar chapter. Thanks, Teach N! Hahahahahahaha.  Syempre, dahil adventure travel mode daw gusto niya slay, mag-Pulag daw kami ulit. hmm this might be a weird answer but it's "we made it here, we're finally here" from the first ers 2017 recap video (wdbwotv sleepers).

it's not just the quote itself but also the circumstances/context that mean a lot to me. that show was their first show back from what was at the time their longest break from touring. back then it felt like forever (we didn't know what we had in store with trench lmao). the excitement we collectively felt for them coming back was palpable. ers 2017 was also going to be the first time i'd see the pilots (i saw them in february that year!) so that video and show marked the beginning of that countdown for me, which was an especially big deal for me since i had been in the clique for over a year at that point and i was getting really antsy to see the boys live. also that year was my senior yr of hs and it was uh..not a good time. so having the pilots and ers in my life really helped to keep me going. ers was one of my favorite times i've had in the clique, and that first 2017 show and that little speech tyler gave in the recap video represent all of that for me.

Hello Fellow Cultists, Well i've been pretty M.I.A for a while, so im not dead and am really excited for The Upcoming Major Update for COTL titled Relics of The Old Faith(with 4 Brand New Structures Coming in it aswell!) and I've been also seeing inspo on Tumblr by searching for cotl AUs and some of them are Amazing & Even Interesting with The Lore of This Game's Characters, Including NPCs aswell! so I've have decided to Plan my own Cult of The Lamb AU(It's Nameless for now) but The Plot is Simply a Epilogue or Possible Prediction for ROTOF's Postgame Story(What If The Bishops can be Resurrected, Reborn as Smol Followers like Narinder has and with Lamberina(My Lambsona OC who's introduce soon) along with Her Faithful & Loyal Followers try their best to Help Nari & His Sibs get along by doing Family Therapy and with Lamberina struggling to Reform each Smol Bishop(or Baby Bishops in this Case) along with Meeting New Friends and Discovering New Locations along her Journey.

This Will Feature Followers in my Own Cult(I have Currently Created 2 Completed Saves both Spared Narinder) and will even have my iwn OCs and Maybe Bring Back Ratuu as a Bonus. I only jotted bad paperwork on the what-to-dos and also widened them into paragraphs. I am very happy with the final result however, In my opinion I may have done better by appearing much more specific. Be sure you have at least 1 clock noticeable in the main room of the get-together for the countdown- You do not want to avoid it!! However, if you have just a few clocks, you can group them collectively and create a feature of it! In case you're concerned individuals will be far too drunk & miss the countdown, set a number of alarms for five minutes to midnight.
