Princess Crepe is feeling better, and is ready to leave! But before she does so, she needs to tie up loose ends. Let’s dig in.
The Plot
Syrup discovers Princess Crepe is missing from the Rose Pact. She then shows up in Coco's bag at school, surprising everyone.
Bunbee finds Isohgin and Yadokahn are not in their office at Eternal, and really starts to question why he joined this organization.
Crepe reveals to the team that she's fully recovered, and will be returning to her kingdom after she spends a day observing Coco and his teaching style. She still calls him her fiance despite his clear discomfort.
Nozomi and the other girls spend the day planning something that they don't want Coco to know.
Crepe sees Coco giving a lesson to Nozomi after class and becomes sad. She returns to Natts House early and mopes.
Crepe gets sad but puts on a front in front of Nuts, talking about how she's excited to get back home and work on the Palmier-Crepe Kingdom merger. He sees through her facade and asks if she's told Coco how she feels, rather than strongarming him with politics. He says Coco will respond to straightforwardness with straightforwardness.
Everyone comes home and the girls declare they're having a going away party for Crepe, and hand her a gift. As she tries to unwrap it, Isohgin and Yadokahn show up and turn the bow into a Hoshiina, as well as transforming themselves.
The girls transform and fight the Hoshiina, but get caught in the ribbons. Rose tries to protect Coco, Nuts, Syrup, and Crepe but can't hold the monster off. Crepe and Syrup are captured and I&Y take the Rose Pact.
The villains start to leave with the Pact, but Dream insists that they release Crepe, declaring that she's going home today. Everyone fights some more but gets captured again.
Coco stumbles towards the duo, demanding they let go of Crepe. He says Nozomi taught him to never run away, never give up. He wants to save Crepe and Precure and retrieve the pact.
Dream breaks free and protects Coco, saying she learned from him to be kind to everyone. Everyone kicks I&Y back and retrieves the pact. Rose saves Crepe from the Hoshiina. Coco and the Cures perform Rainbow Rose Explosion. I&Y flee.
At twilight, everyone is having a party, but Crepe watches from the balcony instead, afraid to join in. Coco approaches her and reminds her she's the guest of honor. She finally tells him she loves him, and loves how hard he works for his goal. But he rejects her, saying he can't be with her, as he still has things to do and he wants to stay with Nozomi and help her dream come true. Crepe is devastated and says through tears that their relationship going forward is purely political.... But admits that if he needs anything, she'll help however she can.
Later that evening, Crepe hands off her calling card and leaves, warning Nozomi that if she doesn't treat Coco well, she'll return. Nozomi is confused why she's being called out.
As she heads back to her kingdom, Crepe finally looks at the gift she got: it’s a portrait of her made of leaves, flowers, and gems that says “Take care and see you again!” (元気でまたおうネ), and the episode closes on her disappearing into the portal.
The Analysis
What I Liked
Look, I’ve been transparent about my disdain for Crepe so I’m leading with: I’m glad she’s gone. I also liked Coco giving her a clear rejection, and stating his feelings for Nozomi more explicitly.
If I ignore my disdain for Crepe, I can acknowledge that the structure of this episode and setting up a farewell for her is fun. But I’ll address the other side of this in the next section.
We continue to build up Bunbee’s conflicted feelings about remaining at Eternal, and this will be explored more thoroughly next episode.
Coco’s speech about never running away is a bit cliche but it does land.
Kurumi has some great facial expressions in this episoe when she’s trying to sweeet talk Coco.
What I Didn’t Like
Nuts’s lecture to Crepe about being honest about her feelings seems disingenuous to me, because she’s been extremely transparent about her feelings for Coco all along. She loves him and believes they are betrothed. He said when she first showed up that he didn’t recall this, and certainly didn’t intend to propose to her. Everything since then has just been her ignoring his clear and obvious discomfort and disinterest, to the point of attempting to manipulate him politically to get her way, and the show has not addressed this clear abuse of power at all.
Isohgin and Yadokahn are more useless than normal. They’ve never had much going for them, they always just stand around somewhere remarking on the situation they currently find themselves in, but this time they didn’t even have a reason to antagonize the Cures except for plot. Give me more of Mucardia, who is actively trying to learn about and manipulate the girls to get the Rose Pact.
Miscellaneous
Masuko Mika appears for the first time in a while.
Milk does not appear in her fairy form in this episode.
Rainbow Rose Explosion is used as a finisher for the second episode in a row.
The girls are back in their fall/winter school uniforms, with the lavender dress and the violet coat. The passage of time in this series remains an enigma.
In the end we never actually saw Crepe having fun at her own party. Whether this is good or bad is highly subjective, so I’m leaving it in this category.
Conclusion
It's a weak conclusion to a weak monarch's arc. King Doughnuts had a good arc and was a good mentor, especially to Nuts. Queen Bavarois may have been a blabbermouth, but she had genuinely good advice once in a while and aided Syrup. What does Princess Crepe bring to the mix? Nothing in particular. I said in episode 28 that “Perhaps this will be a case where the monarch has more to learn from the team.“ So how did that shake out? She technically helped with the Milky Mirror and gave a little bit of coaching to Kurumi to help her balance her responsibilities, but she had no character arc of learning how to manage her feelings for Coco and the misunderstanding from their youth, or how to separate her personal and political affairs. She was just an annoying piece of plot baggage up until the end. She felt like an obligation. We’ve got a few episodes of downtime before King Montblanc appears, and I vaguely recall him being a decent character, so we’ll see how he shakes out. With that aside, the episode is fine. It’s nice to see how they’re making Bunbee question his future, and while the conflict is extremely weak, we do see Coco exemplify his strengths as a teacher and leader.
Next time on Precure Daily, Nozomi has a heart-to-heart with someone unexpected. Look forward to it!
