YOUmedia is a space within the Chicago Public Libraries designed for teens. Teens are able to hangout and create a variation of projects. From visual arts to mixed media and music, teens receive support from skilled mentors. Best of all, all the equipment can be used at no cost with just a library card.
Created by teens at the Harold Washington Library YOUmedia center, this mixtape was released May 12, 2019. Holding a variation of genres throughout it, teens are able to express feelings. While listening to each of the tracks, I am able to come to the conclusion that every teen had to convey a message through their music and put effort into it. Inspired from many of today's artists, teens were able to convey messages through music. Though there are many forms of art like paintings, drawings, and theater, these teens chose to express themselves through music. I like the way that there are different genres of music within the track so that everyone can listen to it.
Through this mixtape, I learned that there are more people out there who have similar interests, thoughts, and ideas like me. This mixtape allowed me to connect with others through music. Though I do not know who these teens are, we are able to share similar interests and similar tastes in music. Music allows us to connect to others even without knowing them. It allows us to express ourselves freely in a form of art. Everyone has heard music at some point in their life. This mixtape has shown me that I can express myself in many ways and that I do not have to be well-known and famous to speak out and make a difference.
Though I liked each and every track in the mixtape, I would have to say that my overall favorite track was Yea OFC by Laelo. I like the way the artist has the back vocals and how their voice changed between low and medium pitched vocals. The beat is fire! I liked the way in which the intro was set leading straight up to the chorus. Though the chorus is a repetition of words, the artist begins with a low pitched voice at the beginning and finishes it off with medium pitched vocals. I like how the artist varied between low and medium pitched vocals to add heat to the song. The beat for each part of the song stayed the same. Simple but good.
Anyone who listens to this mixtape will love it! I would highly recommend it. Check it out yourselves and get a taste of what Chicago teens have to offer.

This year I have been focusing on 2 concepts. In the idea of teamwork, I focus on bringing as many great minds together as possible. In the idea of becoming a more extreme version of myself (Sparklezilla Extreme), I am pushing myself to experiment on aspects of my identity in a deeper way. In “I am Super Tall (sang), Communal Hat Version 1 of 2” I wanted to make something that functions as a sculpture off the body and as a potential communal performance object on the body while incorporating both concepts (Multiple people could wear at the same time (literally putting heads together), and a hat that makes me taller.) In February this year, I worked with a team of youth to make a giant communal hat with a performance score that many people could explore and activate together on the 6th floor at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati OH. This project is an extension of that important idea. I like as much of my work as possible to be an invitation to collaborate and perform. Clint and I only scratched the surface on this as a performance object - I love any opportunities to perform with @cosmicmoustachecomics I made this back in October. I never posted about it because it was part of this year’s Secret Auction for @artworkscincy and we couldn’t reveal ourselves until after the auction. It was hard not to share because I had made some fun videos about working with EVA foam as a sculptural/wearable material for the Radical Fit Tutorials program via YOUmedia social media channels put together by the Chicago Public Library and @rebirthgarments. This hat is the focus of my part 2 video. Radical Fit is an 8 month fashion based program series that embraces craft, making and DIY while providing a safe space for teens to discuss gender equity, and to dream and create through personal expressions of style. The initiative is funded through Project Next Generation, an education technology initiative of the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White. Throughout the mixtape it is clear that there is a lot of feeling that was put into each song. The songs covered many different topics which made the album very unique and diverse. Having a variety of songs allows multiple audiences to enjoy the album rather than only a select few. It is inspirational to see that people my age are making such heartfelt music. Art comes in many different forms and it amazing to see how much creativity can be put into music. My favorite song on the album was “Hole in the Ground” by Maria Lourdes ft. Luis Verdin. This song has a lot of emotion put into it, allowing it to have a deeper and stronger meaning. Overall the album is amazing and I would recommend others to listen to it.

Chance The Rapper is having a very Stevie Wonder birthday
Rap superstar, joyful youngster, and national treasure Chance the Rapper turned 24 years old this weekend and, to no one's surprise, had the kind of fun-filled birthday we all want.
SEE ALSO: Chance the Rapper is donating millions to Chicago public schools—and is asking for your help, too
He's throwing a party, appropriately called "Chance The Birthday," on Sunday night in his hometown of Chicago benefiting Social Works, his non-profit supporting Chicago Public Schools.

He also received toasts on Twitter from a wide-range of folks, from Ellen to Tumblr to the Chicago Public Library.
Happy birthday, @ChancetheRapper! Love, Ellen the Daytime Television Host.

He even got to sing the "Birthday Song," an old tradition for listeners of Chicago radio station WGCI who could call in and receive a birthday shout-out.
Just completed my lifelong goal of doin the birthday song on @WGCI Honestly yall should bring that back. And play mines 15 more times today
— Lil Chano From 79th (@chancetherapper) April 16, 2017
And? He got to top it all off being serenaded by close family and friends who sung the chorus to Stevie Wonder's well known song "Happy Birthday" to him.
Not that we never thought otherwise, but Chance the Rapper is living his best life, and all we can do is stand in admiration.

Childish Gambino performs “This is America” at Chance the Rapper's Open Mike event: Watch
Chance the Rapper and his SocialWorks charity hosted their 30th “Open Mike” on Monday evening. The free event, which encourages youth participation in the arts, was held at the Harold Washington Library Center for anyone with a high school ID. Those in attendance were treated to a big surprise, as Childish Gambino, aka the polymath Donald Glover, delivered a surprise performance of his politically charged smash single, “This is America”.
(Read: When Did We All Start Liking Childish Gambino?)
“My next guest needs no introduction,” Chance said by way of teasing the crowd. “So let's try it.” At the first notes of the track, the kids rushed the stage with phones held high. Gambino came out looking clean as ever and rocked out with the hyped crowd, as you can see in the video below.
thank you @donaldglover for coming to our 30th @socialworks_chi @OpenMikeChicago !!! thank you @chancetherapper for leveraging your celebrity for the youth of Chicago in moments like these. thank you @chipublib @YOUmediaChicago !!! pic.twitter.com/sCMyPVRyF0

Chance and Gambino have been teasing a collaborative mixtape for years, and every time they get together it's another reminder of how incredible the concept could be.
