After the USAF canceled the YF-12 interceptor, the two remaining planes were loaned to NASA to support various test programs. One such program, known as COLDWALL, supported by NASA's Langley Research Center, consisted of a stainless steel tube equipped with thermocouples and pressure sensors. The cameras used to film launches of the AIM-47s were retained, while the folding ventral fin was replaced by a smaller unit fitted with sensors. A special insulating coating covered the tube, which was chilled with liquid nitrogen. At Mach 3, the insulation could be pyrotechnically blown away from the tube, instantly exposing it to the thermal environment.
The first YF-12, tail number 935, became the workhorse of the program with 146 flights between Dec. 11 1969 and Nov. 7 1979, while the second YF-12A, 936, made 62 flights before it was lost in a non-fatal crash on Jun. 24 1971. The plane was replaced by SR-71A 61-7951, given a bogus tail number 06937 and called the YF-12C to disguise the still-secret Blackbird.

New addition to the grim reaper family!
- 61 years old
- YF-12
- Aeros, Rikers, and Ballistics brother
- He has a shimmery look to him and often looks a lot brighter and more red
- He's supposed to have markings that resemble feathers on his wingtips, but I'm unsure of how well I pulled that off
- A lot more mischievous than planes in the Blackbird family tend to be
- Favorite activities are annoying Ballistic and racing Riker
- He never was grim reaper, but he worked for NASA
And I need help naming him! Suggestions are appreciated /not forced
#he initially was going to be an A-12 but i decided that it looked too similar to the SR-71#the YF-12 still looks really similar (which i want) but it doesn't look too similar#disney planes#planes#planes oc

A mockup of would have been the operational F-12B:
The data collected during the flight test program allowed Lockheed's engineers to remodel the forward fuselage and nose, adding a partial chine to the radome and better fairing the infrared search-and-track sensors. These changes would have meant the F-12B could dispense with the folding ventral fin of the YF-12, though the fins under the engine nacelles would remain.
An early version of the Lockheed YF-12 in bare metal.

NASA-F104 "811" flying chase with YF-12A SN 60-6935. This was only YF-12A to survive the Air Force and later the NASA flight-test program. It is displayed at the National Museum of the USAF, Wright Patterson AFB, OH.

NASA Center Boosted YF-12 Supersonic Engine Research
Supersonic flight became a reality in October 1947, when the Bell X-1 rocket plane broke the sound barrier. NASA’s Lewis Research Center in Cleveland (now, NASA Glenn), which had served as the agency’s aeropropulsion leader since it was established in the 1940s, subsequently helped NASA advance the technology needed to make longer supersonic flights possible.
