Disco #178: Amerigo Gazaway - Yassin Gaye: The Departure (Side One)

         He escrito acá acerca de Marvin Gaye (#54) y de Mos Def (#73), pero vale la pena escribir acerca de Amerigo Gazaway, un productor que mezcla a ambos artistas en el estilo llamado Mashup.

        Ahora, ¿cómo se explica el Mashup? Es un género hecho por DJ y productores en donde mezclan canciones o extractos de uno o más artistas entre sí y arman nuevas canciones, normalmente distintas al resultado inicial. Y entre los productores más reconocidos que lo hacen está Amerigo Gazaway, famoso por hacer este disco “Yassin Gaye: The Departure (Side One)” y otros como “Fela Soul” (en donde mezcla a Fela Kuti con De La Soul) o “The Miseducation of Eunice Waymon” (en donde mezcla a Lauryn Hill con Nina Simone), todos muy recomendables.

        Uno casualmente se preguntará ¿de qué me sirve escuchar estas cosas si conozco los artistas por separado? Generalmente, la respuesta es por la expectación (o ansiedad, depende del cómo se mire) de escuchar si el resultado es mejor o peor que el normal, o por la novedad de esas canciones sin expectativa previa, lo que encuentro que es mejor. Y este productor croata logra lo imposible; es decir, que suenen como nuevas canciones pero además no pierdan la esencia de los artistas involucrados.

En el caso de este “Yassin Gaye: The Departure (Side One)”, es la primera de dos partes dedicadas a Marvin Gaye junto con Mos Def, los cuales este productor los llama “almas gemelas”. En este disco aparecen samples de discos perdidos de ellos, más algunas cosas más conocidas.

       En mi caso, cuando escuché esto por primera vez, me cuadró completamente lo que sonaba y, además, me sorprendió por la mezcla tan perfecta entre esos dos mundos. Recomendable es escuchar la obra de ambos por separado, pero si uno no los conoce, también lo disfruta.

        Amerigo Gazaway se hizo un nombre en el estilo Mashup, pero este estilo duró menos de lo que uno piensa, lo más seguro por el bombardeo de información actual. Y cualquiera de los nombrados arriba es un placer auditivo, pero yo me quedo con “Yassin Gaye: The Departure (Side One)”, por ser mi entrada a ese (sub)mundo. Genio por lograr hacer todo esto y que compagine genial.
