as the confetti falls and the spotlight fades, Futaba feels a spark of hope reignite within him as his fans light up the dying fire in him.

The announcement of the winners for the first season of VS AMBIVALENZ is electric. The crowd roars as the names of the seven members moving forward to form XlamV are called out one by one.

Each name sends a ripple of excitement through the venue, but for Arisugawa Futaba, the idol otaku who had poured his heart and soul into this journey, it was as if his world had gone silent.

Despite the booming music and celebratory cheers echoing around him, all he hears is the echo of his unspoken question: Why not me?

He feels the confetti rain down, its vibrant colors mocking him as it settles on his shoulders. But the confetti isn’t for him.

Not this time. Not ever.

Futaba’s bittersweet smile stays plastered across his face, but inside, a storm rages. He is the idol otaku. He has dedicated his life to understanding idols, to learning every detail about how to make people smile. He should win. Maybe his efforts aren’t enough.

Maybe he isn’t enough.

You, a devoted Futaba fan, feel your heart ache as you watch him from the crowd. The sight of his forced smile crushes you. This isn’t the bright, hopeful Futaba you’ve cheered for. You can’t stand seeing him like this. Gripping the straps of your itabag—decorated passionately with pins, charms, and photos of him—you cup your hands around your mouth and shout,

“FU-TA-BA-KUN! OTSU-KA-RE-SAMA!!!”

Again and again, you scream his name, pouring every ounce of emotion into your voice. It doesn’t matter that some fans around you turn to look at you like you’re weird. It doesn’t matter that the sounds of the celebration threaten to drown you out. All that matters is that he hears you.

And he does.

As if on cue, Futaba’s eyes widen slightly, and he snaps out of the void threatening to swallow him whole. The lights of the stage seem to grow a little brighter, the cheers a little louder, as his gaze sweeps the crowd… and finds you.

You, with your itabag gleaming under the stage lights, wearing his colors proudly, your voice cutting through the chaos to reach him. Your words, though simple, carry a weight that shakes him to his core.

“Futaba-kun,” you shout again, “You did a good job! Thank you so much!”

It’s a futile gesture, now that you think about it. To shout from a crowd that will only drown your voice. A futile but touching gesture because it carries the weight of your admiration for him, regardless of the outcome.

A tear slides down Futaba’s cheek before he even realizes it. Then another. And another. His hand flies up to cover his mouth, but it’s too late; he’s crying openly on the stage. Yet amidst the tears, a genuine smile breaks through, the kind of smile that reminds him of why he wants to be an idol in the first place.

The crowd around you, inspired by your unwavering support, begins to follow suit. One by one, they start shouting their thanks and congratulations to Futaba and the other trainees who didn’t make it into XlamV. The energy in the room shifts, transforming from a celebration of the winners to a heartfelt acknowledgment of everyone who has given their all.

Futaba waves and bows deeply, his voice shaking as he calls out, “Thank you! Thank you so much for your support! I’ll never forget this!”

The six other trainees—Mio, Taiyo, Kazu, Rey, Cion, and Cuc—those who aren’t called into XlamV, join him at the side of the stage. They, too, bow and wave to the crowd, their eyes shining with a mix of tears and gratitude. The fans—their fans—cry with them, bittersweet smiles lighting up their faces.

For Futaba, it hurts.

It hurts so much not to achieve the dream he’s worked so hard for. But as he stands there, surrounded by the love and support of his fans, he realizes that this isn’t the end. He’s brought smiles to so many faces, even if just for a little while. And for now, that’s enough.

He holds his head high, smiling through the tears as he waves goodbye to the crowd.

From your spot in the crowd, you clutch your itabag close, the weight of the moment settling over you. Quietly, you murmur, “This isn’t the end, Futaba-kun. You’ll find your way back to the stage—you have to. No matter what, I’ll be here, cheering for you.”

And as Futaba’s figure disappears backstage, you know in your heart that this isn’t the last time you’ll see him shine. The idol trainee who had dedicates his life to making others smile would find his way back. He had to.

Because he was Futaba—the idol otaku who inspired you and so many others to believe in dreams.
