Apple and Google to soon release 5G support software updates in India

Apple and Google said Wednesday they will roll out software updates to enable 5G support on their respective handsets in India, the world’s second largest wireless market, just days after local bureaucrats began pushing the phonemakers to expedite their efforts.

Reliance Jio and Airtel, India’s two largest carriers, have started to offer 5G services in select Indian cities in recent weeks, but many popular handsets in the nation currently don’t support the local airwaves. These smartphones have hardware capabilities for 5G, but manufacturers need to work with local network carriers to release software updates to enable support for local airwaves.

To that end, Apple today said that it will issue a software update in December to enable 5G on iPhones used in India. Apple first introduced 5G capabilities with the iPhone 12 in 2020.

“We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” an Apple spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Google has also promised a software update for its devices — though it hasn’t provided a specific timeframe for the rollout.

“Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a are 5G capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. Google launched the Pixel 6a in India in July, and the Pixel 7 series will go on sale soon.

In July, India sold the license to 5G airwaves in an auction for a record sum of $19 billion. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio has purchased most of the spectrum and has committed to spending $25 billion alone in rolling out and broadening its 5G services. The South Asian nation, which is one of the last major markets to adopt 5G, has high hopes about its potentials.

“5G is a knock on the doors of a new era in the country. It is the beginning of an infinite sky of opportunities,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at an event last month.

Both Apple and Google’s devices hold a small percentage in terms of market share in the Indian smartphone market. While Apple commands just 4% of the local smartphone market, Google’s numbers are not available because of comparatively lower sales. According to analyst firm Counterpoint, the total install base of 5G-ready smartphones in India was 50 million in July.

Samsung, India’s second largest smartphone vendor, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. According to a support page by carrier Bharti Airtel, some headsets from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, and OnePlus already support its 5G services.

Notably, Airtel has enabled its 5G services in eight cities and Reliance Jio has enabled them in four cities through an invite-only program. Both these network providers aim to expand the 5G coverage across the country in the coming few years. Airtel’s chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said that the company aims to cover all parts of its eight launch cities by March 2023 and the entire country by 2023. Reliance Jio’s goals are rather ambitious as it plans to roll out its 5G services across the country by 2023.

Cerita HP

HP pertama dibeli pada tahun 2007. Saat itu aku lulus SMA dan beneran butuh hp untuk nyari kerja. Satu-satunya harta yang aku punya adalah cincin warisan mbahuti. Tanpa surat, tanpa apa-apa, cincin dijual laku 500ribu. Habis itu nyari iklan hp di koran dan kebeli hp motorola second termurah.

Selama kerja, hp itu jadi teman. Ya waktu itu tidak bisa buat ngapa-ngapain juga kan, cuma bisa sms aja. Jadul banget pokoknya masih monophonic dan 1 warna doang.

Tahun 2008 kuliah masih pakai hp itu. Lalu suatu hari di bulan juli ikut lomba menulis cerpen. WOW AKU MENANG DONG uang tunai 1 juta. Sebahagia itu dan di bulan Desember 2008 beli hp baru dengan uang itu. Hp nokia 3110 new. Bahagia banget rasanya bisa beli barang yang diinginkan tanpa nodong ortu. Ya kali duit segitu ga punya ortuku. Hp itu yang jadi saksi perjuangan kuliah dan nulis buku. Udah paket komplit, buat aplikasi chat bisa, buka fb, foto, kamera, bisa semua.

Tahun 2012 lulus kuliah, kerja, dan memutuskan beli hp agar tidak ketinggalan jaman. Belinya langsung yang touchscreen dong dengan hasil keringat sendiri. Merk sony xperia tipo. Saat itu xperia terlihat eksklusif dan mahal. Wow pengen beli dan kebeli di bulan desember 2012. Satu-satunya hp touchscreen se sekolahan haha seneng banget.

Tahun 2013 beli lagi hp baru, yaitu nokia 107 waktu di ende. Beli hp karena xperia tidak bisa dipakai di situ, jadi daripada pusing dan stress yaudah mari kita beli hp baru. Beli yang murah dan basic untuk sms dan telfon. You know, ternyata barang BM kayaknya hahahaha ga ada segel nya tapi yauda kan cuma dipakai di bukit aja.

Tahun 2017 beli HP baru lagi, kali ini asus. Karena waktu itu lagi heboh hp asus bagus tapi murah. Saingan sama samsung tapi dompet ga cocok sama samsung. Tapi memang ga suka samsung juga sih. Beli karena merasa xperia udah jadul banget dan minta suami harus beliin. Wow keajaiban, dia dapat proyek dadakan dan dapat uang 3juta cash. 2 hari habis itu langsung beli hp baru. 🤣🤣🤣

Tahun 2019 HP asusnya konslet karena air minumnya tumpah di tas, langsung beli dong hari itu juga 😅😅😅 dan jatuh cinta dengan xiaomi redmi note 7. Sampai detik ini masih pakai xiaomi.

Apakah pengen beli hp baru? Tentu saja.

Oke, summary nya berikut ini:

1. Beli HP sesuai kebutuhan. Belum pumya uang, ya nggak beli.

2. Berpikir jangka menengah, HP dipakai dalam kurun waktu minimal 3 tahun jadi pastikan HP yang dibeli ya fiturnya masih mumpuni untuk 3 tahun ke depan. Makanya kalau beli, ya beneran yang fiturnya terbaru, bukan Hp keluaran tahun lalu, harus tahun ini minimal 6 bulan sebelumnya.

3. Harga masih logis, jangan sampai over budget. Tapi sesuaikan dengan fitur, kalau tambah 200k-500k fitur lebih mumpuni ya kenapa ga kan.

4. Low price, high specifications. Aku bukan pemuja merk tapi tetap merasa bahwa merk indo bukan pilihan. Alih-alih samsung, aku masih cinta dengan xiaomi. 🍎 juga bukan pilihan. Sejauh ini beli 3 hp xiaomi dan tidak rusak, cuma sudah out of fitur saja. Kalau nantinya ada merk yang kualitas bagus tapi low price ya why not.

5. Beli yang original bukan blackmarket dan second. Pertama kali dulu beli hp second dan aku belajar bahwa hp second itu not for sale. Udahlah, museum in aja kalau emang udah ga dipakai.

6. Hati-hati banget dengan urusan hp ini. Jangan samapi hp rusak karena pemakaian. Belilah karena fiturnya sudah ketinggalan jaman hahaha.

7. Kombinasi harus beli hp baru: kebutuhan dan money. Kalau dua-duanya tersedia, oke beli. Jika salah satu tydac, ya sudah bisa sabar. Tapi yang paling utama adalah kebutuhan. I mean, duit 5 juta sudah bisa dapet hp bagus kan, dan 5 juta juga tidak terlalu susah nabungnya.

8. Fitur favorit: mesin yang tahan banting dengan penyimpanan besar, multi tasking, no lola, kamera bagus, koneksi cepat, batere besar. Sudah itu saja. Untuk yang lain, bukan prioritas.

Kapan beli hp baru lagi?

Sudah pengen sih beli yang 5G. Oke, nunggu fitur terbaru lagi yang oke nanti sekitar tahun depan kita beli hp baru hahaha.

Fyi, nanti kapan-kapan aku bikin versi laptop ah.
