We caught up with Xiao-Long Zhao to discuss Alexander's return in Young Royals Season 2, including his motivations, friendships and the masquerade ball, acknowledging his own gender identity and boundaries between fiction and an actor's personal life, and music studies in Gotland.

The actor’s name is Xiao-Long Rathje Zhao, and I for one hope Alexander Brage (his character) is cisgender. Because I imagine it’s hard to be an openly trans actor and find work. So if he can get cast as a cis male character on a TV show, that sends a message to other casting directors that you don’t have to pigeonhole trans actors as trans characters.

Which means more trans actors can actually make a living at their profession. Because there are a lot more roles available for cisgender characters than trans characters.

I was so happy to find out that the actor who plays Alexander is trans! I mean, it's his private life and he didn't have to make it known, but it looks like he's always been pretty open about it. I am torn between wanting Alexander to also be trans, because it's always nice to include trans characters, and not wanting it, because I also think it's cool to have a trans character play an assumed-cis character. And it's also nice not to touch the subject at all, because it shouldn't matter. Anyway, regardless of what happens, it's really nice!
