You didn’t mean to say it, the sentence just sort of slipped out of your mouth. It was dark and it was late- memories of Eugene Victor Tooms, Duane Barry, Donnie Pfaster flood your brain. Monsters that stalk in the shadows and come out to play at night. Once she was out of this office she would be gone from your protective sight. You simply needed to know that she was okay.

“Call me when you get home,” you had said.

She pulls a face. You aren’t her father or her boyfriend, your care for her shouldn’t extend past the field.

But it does.

“Or don’t,” you say, shaking the request off. “It’s up to you.”

Later, you try your best to ignore the phone. It’s no use, this show doesn’t interest you and you are hoping for that phone call regardless.

The phone does ring. You almost fall over the coffee table in your haste to answer it.

There is no hello in greeting, simply her voice and the words I’m home. Relieve spreads through you, tension falling away from your body.

That voicemail still haunts you. Your nightmares always have those screams, those words, the sound of that window smashing.

You keep her on the phone- listen out for any abnormal noises coming from the other end.

You’ll never abandon her like you did that night ever again.

Ummm in terms of XF4 and Wolverine? I can speak for the Cuckoos, they flirted with Quentin so Wolverine would set them up with Cable (gag)

In Kitty's case, Doom manipulated her powers somehow and made her heavier than stone, the opposite extreme of lighter than air, because he "knows" her powers well. This might be a tie into "Kitty isn't a mutant" which would make me sad

Don't Worry About Me.

She falls to the ground and in a split second you decide to go against the book. The suspect escapes down the alley while you run towards Scully. You’re in a panic, your only concern is her. She’s ill! You never should have allowed her to accompany you.

You kneel down next to her, rolling her over, pulling her towards you, her name a worried breath falling from your lips.

“Are you okay?” you ask.

Scully coughs a little and winces are she sits up. You check her over for signs of blood loss, a cut, even a bump or a scratch could be bad.

“I’m fine,” she says, pulling your hands off herself. “Don’t worry about me.” Her new favourite line.

Her eyes widen when she looks up at you, however, hands coming up to touch your temple.

“Mulder, you’re bleeding,” she tells you. Her fingers pull away and you see your blood on them. Your head starts to throb at the sight but you don’t care about that- you’re not the one with cancer.

“Don’t worry about me,” you parrot back to her. You help her stand and she looks around.

“Where did the suspect go?”

You shrug, smiling sheepishly.

“I let him go,” you admit, waiting for the lecture but you continue before she can even utter the first letter. “You were more important.”

Scully sighs, dropping anything she was about to say.

“We’ll get him next time,” she says, letting it go. She grabs you gently by the arm. “Come on, I want to check that wound out before we drive back.”
