X2 (2003) Review
potential spoilers ahead...
The story is continuation of the first movie, which is to be expected of a sequel, but most of it ends up feeling like its' just further exposition of the characters with a plot clearly made to set up the next movies (X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine). It does introduce you to a couple new characters, but they all remain in the background with little to no character exposition, despite their important roles to come. Nightcrawler, who was introduced and fairly important to the actual plot, gets very little attention or any depth add to his character. His arc, and the movie as a whole, would have benefited greatly from giving him more screen time and detail. While Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X-Men, to the point where just his inclusion definitely gave this movie a 1-2 point boost his story is the kick starter for this movies entire premise and yet once he's found by Storm and Jean, he gets sidelined completely. As much as this movie feels like a precursor to the following movies, and not it's own story, the story you do get is interesting at some points, though it's much more favorable if you already like and enjoy these characters and their stories. Having the entire base team, the one established in the first movie, be almost entirely separated makes it difficult to, you know, build team dynamics. That's a pretty difficult thing to do and expand upon when the team isn't even together.

X-Men rewatch part 1
Watched the first and second X-Men movies this weekend, for perhaps the first time in 15 years. I loved these at the time and have had a soft spot for the X-Men since I grew up watching the cartoon. I remember these being one of the first superhero movies that felt really real and was done seriously and dramatically, unlike the Batman TV series. And felt just a little more plausible than the 80s fantasy movies I'd seen as a kid.
Plus, these were pretty famous here in New Zealand at the time because we were still celebrating Anna Paquin making it in the movie world. Life in a small country. Lol
Anyway, I was surprised by how the first one felt incredibly clunky! I kept getting pulled out of it by sets and props that all looked a little bit too much like sets and props, and some pretty janky Y2K CGI. But even the story seemed to drag in places and then move too quickly in others.
But the second film, X2 from 2003, seems leaps and bounds better. I didn't notice the special effects and it just flowed so much better.
Also, how young they all look! Especially Hugh Jackman. Although I feel like Ian McKellen has barely changed in 25 years.
One thing that really doesn't work for me now, and I don't know if this is because I have more life experience now, or because the times have changed, but the whole Wolverine falls for Jean and keeps trying it on even after she's said no, and the story expects us to be on his side - that all just makes me uncomfortable now. Also, if you want me to be on his side you need to actually show me how he falls in love with her. It's gotta be more than 'ooh, she's pretty'. 🙄 Anywho.....
Looking at the rest of the films I think there's at least three or four I haven't actually seen before, so I'm quite looking forward to making my way through them.

i don't rly care about what's going on with the mcu multiverse or the plot or whatever the only metric of quality wrt deadpool 3 is whether him and wolverine fuck nasty or not. they won't but disney had the potential to make the greatest movie of all time

Magneto was right and it's not funny
It is very sad actually.
//SPOILERS Deadpool and Wolverine
In X-Men 2000 Erik and Charles have this dialogue going on:
Erik: Doesn't it ever wake you up in the middle of the night? The feeling that someday they will pass that foolish law or one just like it and come for you and your children?
Charles: It does indeed.
Erik: What do you do when you wake up to that?
Charles: I feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul who comes to that school looking for trouble.
Tumblr media
Every single time Charles appears he pushes this idea that there's always hope and not all people are as evil as the ones in 1940s.
But the true is that every single movie proves Charles wrong.
For example, Days of Future Past is all about mutant genocide. And even tho in the past they stopped it from happening, every movie comes to the same point of some laws to potentially limit mutants' rights.
From what I've seen at this point going chronologically (even tho this order might be controvercial):
First Class - 1962 - fear towards mutants and the attempt to completely vipe this one Cuba beach to kill all known mutants at the moment;
Days of Future Past - 1973 - political heat about mutants and first mutant-killer machines;
Apocalypse - 1983 - on a lower scale but Erik's family gets killed just because people fear him (shows us apparent society views);
Dark Phoenix - 1991 - very unstable peace and then new political heat about mutants;
X-Men - 2000 - (even tho it's alternate reality) new laws about mutants are about to get passed;
X2 X-Men United - 2003 - attack planned by Striker caused political heat again and a very devastating one. Watching Bobby's parents say "have you tried to not be a mutant" is actually painful;
Days of Future Past - 2023 - complete mutant genocide;
Deadpool and Wolverine - 2024 - (really not sure which timeline is this) ALL the X-Men got killed and Logan couldn't help them, it is stated that "humans came" so we know it wasn't other mutants' job.
And these are only the ones I remember properly (read: rewatched recently).
So with all of this information I came to the conclusion that in the x men universe mutants, unfortunately, will never live in peace.

This is it, thank you for reading.
Edit: added info about X2 X-Men United after watching

Notice the watch Logan's wearing in X2? Notice the stitches on the side are an X? We know he wasn't wearing a watch in the first movie. So he must have been given this by the other X-Men as a gift of becoming a member of their team. How cute is that??

I just saw your description in your bio and I LOVE it!! I love Alan Cumming's Kurt! I'm hoping he will cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine!!
Aww, thank you!! And yes, I just LOVE him. I mean, I get the criticism the movies get and understand it and so, but he was just amazingly casted (debatable if the writers used him properly, not the discussion point now). Also, he's just so incredibly gorgeous?!?!?!
I mean...
