What Does The Deck Say? July 22, 2024
"You thought you had settled the matter for good and had worked out a compromise that was agreeable to all parties. But did you consider that not everyone was acting in good faith? What was supposed to be the start of recovery has turned into the salting of the fields, and now recovery looks even further away. Or, it would be, if you continued working with those that do not have your personal state at heart. You are going to have to cut away that which does not serve you and that which actively hurts you, which will be very painful in the moment. Do it anyway, as the healing that this action begins will reveal how you can continue bettering yourself and your circumstances."
Bryan Lahr’s Wyzard of Odd tarot deck is a work of art featuring carefully crafted images of literal smoke and mirrors. The deck is based on the Thoth and the margins are lined with correspondences from various esoteric practices. The slightly oversize deck works well for contemplation as the images fold onto themselves and unfolds upon the viewer. In following with the tradition set by the Thoth deck, Wyzard Princes are equivalent to Waite’s Knights, and Wyzard Knights are equivalent to Waite’s Kings. The Wyzard of Odd tarot deck is ©Bryan Lahr.
“What Does The Deck Say” is a weekday series of 3 card pulls from a cartomancy deck. No context or query is given to frame what the cards say as the posts are reading samples and not personal instruction. The result is sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, and usually surprising. All readers are invited to leave a comment about what they perceive in the random spread as each person will interact with the cards in their own way.
Personalized, direct, and private cartomancy readings are available via Ko-Fi: Noxporium.

I was reading some of your much older stuff on Three Different Ways.
And you mentioned that you have commissioned bags for tarot cards.
Im still currently on the fence about bags, and I was wondering what kind of fit you ask for in your commissioned bags.
Like are the cards snug in the bag? If they came in a box, does the box fit in the bag?
Why bags?
-Sunlight
For the "standard" size decks (think Waite-Smith and equivalents), I ordered a snug fit that permitted very little movement in the bag. The thing about cloth anything that that the cloth will relax over time, and the more the cloth is manipulated, the more the cloth will stretch. So a cloth bag (even layered) that is snug and tight at first, will eventually relax into a comfy fit that holds all the cards together without abrasion, while still allowing for the cards to literally breathe as the latent humidity does what it does.
For the Wyzard of Odd deck which is large, I ordered a padded cloth bag with a snug fit instead of the usual lined. I anticipated rightly that the odd size would make it a knock magnet as I either knocked it on everything else or everything else knocked on it as I moved things around in storage and transit. The padding has barely compacted over these years but the interior lining did relax some so the cards move around within the bag a little.
I'm murder on boxes, which is why I ordered the bags in the first place. Many of the boxes had already disintegrated, and some decks didn't come with a box at all. I did check the decks I still have boxes for against the well loved bags, and the boxes do fit now. They did not when the bags were new. However, the bag crafter I ordered from did have options at the time to size the bags to fit the deck box. You could also order custom sizes like I did for the Wyzard of Odd (large) and the Enchanted Lenormand (small) decks which were sized to fit the deck only, or a custom size like I did for the Dust II Onyx Travel Deck with book.
I had ordered all of my tarot bags through Wyldechilde Creations on Etsy, but their shop doesn't seem to be active right now. I don't know if they are taking custom orders only. I do know that while their bag flap design is unique to them, the premise is that of a lined bag.
A few years ago, I did make a basic lined bag for another box-less deck of unusual size and dimensions. I was too exact with the measurements and the resulting bag was super tight against the cards, to the point that I considered scrapping it and trying again. However, in the intervening years, the fabrics of the bag have relaxed such that the deck still fits quite snug but there is no difficulty extracting or inserting the deck and I could fit extra cards in there now if needed.
Why bags? My hands are rough. No lotion, cream, or oil will tame them because I'm always doing something with my hands. There are no such things as collector decks with me, because my hands will ruin the resale/collector value of any paper, cardboard, or laminate they get ahold of. (Long term readers will remember the fate of Red Magician Tarot #86/100. A precious deck to me because of all that happened. Zero collector value because of all that happened.)
And bags just feel better to me. I'm watching the exterior laminate separate and peel off my (Atanassov's) Bosch Tarot. The tabs have already detached for both the Bosch Tarot and the Fey Tarot. These hands slap fascists destroy boxes and wear down cards.

What Does The Deck Say? June 18, 2024
"Before you get started, have a moment to check with yourself. What do you think you are going to get from all this? Is this what you really wanted? Are you really okay with what you are about to do to get the end result? What are you willing to give up along the way and are you prepared to go even further? If you have faced these questions and their answers, and are still willing to proceed, then go. If you have any hesitancy, then put it aside for another day and find something mentally safer for you to do. The thing you want to pursue is not something to feint at. Either you go all in, or you go back to bed."

What Does The Deck Say? November 5, 2024
"You started out with everything, so how did it come to this? By not paying attention to what you had and paying too much attention to what others are doing with their resources. But, for all the pain of loss that you are carrying, there is a way to transform this into a victory: Turn your attention back to what you still have. What is still in your hands that you can use today to make things better for yourself, no matter how “trivial” or “ugly”?"

What Does The Deck Say? October 3, 2024
"If you were waiting for a sign to get started, here it is. That thing that you have been cultivating and preparing is ready to proceed once you are ready. If you are not ready to proceed, then hold back and examine what is holding you back. You want to remove as many obstacles as you can before the endeavor begins. Once it does, there is no starting over, there is only making corrections along the way."

What Does The Deck Say? August 27, 2024
"It is going to take much more than bluster for you to get your way, today. It is going to take an honest acknowledgement that there is something that you can not take by force or manipulation, that there is someone you are going to have to humble yourself before and ask like everyone else that approaches them. This is going to burn your hide like nothing else. Tell your pride to sit in the corner with some ice. If you are going to accomplish your goals today, it will be one step at a time and with no bravado or trumpets to announce your progression."

What Does The Deck Say? April 1, 2024
"It would be tempting to dismiss what happened as a consequence of the calendar, but turning your face away will only make things worse. Confront the reality of the situation, painful as it may be, and focus your will on making this better for yourself one way or the other. It will mean foregoing making everyone else happy, but when you think about it, isn’t the process of making everyone else happy that got you in this trouble in the first place?"

What Does The Deck Say? June 27, 2023
Short Reading: "Make the lemonade the way you like it. If they wanted some, they should have made their own."
Not So Short Reading:
"Of course it’s not enough for it to be a lot to deal with. Of course it had to be dumped on your shoulders as well. You might not be able to throw any of it back onto those whose business it is in the first place, but you can take these burdens and make personal assets of them. It will take work and it will anger those who thought to benefit from it but it will give you what you will need to handle things later."

Free Cartomancy Readings – July 23, 2024
Nom de Plume: Kayja
Deck Used: Wyzard of Odd Tarot
Request: how do I unstick myself?
Card: 9 of Wands.
Answer: By examining where and how you got stuck in the first place. At first, the answer appears to be the use of overwhelming force to pop you out of the stuck place and back onto the road you were traveling. But as many a mud-stricken traveler will tell you, that’s really just a good way to dig yourself even deeper. What was it that made you stop in the first place? You may have the raw strength to pull yourself out, but do you need help coordinating your actions so you’re pulling in the right direction? Did you need help with something, but that help never showed so you stalled until staying put felt easier than trying without help? What is it about where you are stuck that is quietly appealing? Is there a wound that needs tending but your pride won’t let you admit there is a problem there? Why here? Why now? Examine that, and it will reveal what needs to be resolved before you can continue on again.

What Does The Deck Say? January 13, 2023
Short Reading: "You can either be moved by other people's expectations of you, or you can move yourself on your timing and get it done right the first time."
Not So Short Reading: "You can’t avoid being part of the situation. You can choose what part you are going to play in the drama. Will you be the person that knows with complete certainty that they are in the right no matter what? Or will you be the person who tries to enact a mutually acceptable solution even if the others aren’t ready to accept it yet? Or will you go off and do your own thing, which was the right thing to do from the start, but everyone else is too busy in their egos to realize it yet? No matter what you choose, someone is going to be upset with your decision, and sometimes that upset person will be you. What matters is doing the right thing as soon as possible as that is what will bring this drama to its end."

What Does The Deck Say? May 2, 2024
"Having to answer to someone else (and of all people, that one person in particular) is going to grate your sense of pride. Put a salve on it, swallow the spiteful words you have already begun to prepare, and realize this person is not here to lord over you, but to help you help yourself to get back on your feet. It will be a hard series of tasks, but look back to what you came through to get here and let that refreshed perspective inform you to the doom that you avoided."

What Does The Deck Say? January 23, 2024
"Why are you so worried about the things that could possibly happen when you still have it in yourself to do something about the things that are still in your hands? Fire will burn in an open field with the same gusto as it does in the fireplace, so stop allowing your fire to be subject to other people’s whims and start controlling where you apply yourself. If where you attempt to kindle a flame is dampening your enthusiasm, then take your spark elsewhere and try again there."

"Remember that time you worked hard, got recognized, and everyone clapped when you received your due? Yea, neither does anyone else. Using the past to help you navigate the present doesn’t work when you are so busy retconning the past that the future becomes unobtainable. Don’t discard your memories of what happened back then, but use them to help you create a better outcome for yourself now."

What Does The Deck Say? November 9, 2023
"You ran the odds for everything you thought possible, only for the impossible to make itself manifest against each and every one of those same odds. This puts you on the backfoot, but it doesn’t put you out of the running. While everyone else is so sure that you are done for, take advantage of the surprise to reappraise the game. You won’t get the goal you had been working towards but it is possible to pivot towards a goal that will benefit you more in the long run. It will take patience to rework your efforts, but doing so in silence means you’re more likely to succeed."

What Does The Deck Say? December 5, 2023
"When they told you that you might feel something, you weren’t prepared for feeling everything, and that those feelings would fold into an encompassing experience. Well, here you are with an increasing wealth of sensations that are almost overwhelming. Don’t try to deal with them all at once. Pick one or two that you can touch without flinching and settle into them like a homemade shawl. As you learn how to let them flow without harm, you will learn how to handle the others you can’t yet touch as well. In time, what felt like an abyssal drowning maelstrom will become a comfortable lounging pool where you can be safe with yourself."

What Does The Deck Say? September 11, 2023
"So sure that you were going to get your way that you dismissed concerns about your methods. Well, your engine’s fire has burnt up the very thing you were trying to achieve and here you are in the ashes of your making. There is a way through, but you will not be the one to spearhead it. It will not be achieved by force of will or by force of strength. You are going to have to cooperate with others for strategic and mutual gain and just let your pride quietly burn from productive restraint."
