Snake River Overlook in Winter
One question that repeatedly gets asked on my tours this time of year is "How did people survive the winters here, especially without our modern equipment?"
It is always a fun question to consider because, let's be honest 3 feet of snow on the ground and -6 degree afternoons do make us grateful for modern materials and tools.
In reality though, most people didnt survive these winters. Many of the native american populations were smarter than the early european settlers and simply moved away during the coldest months.
Those that did stay, and the european settlers that moved in, lived life differently than we do today, working and existing around the challenges of the cold. Many would collect and fashion the fur of local animals into weatherproof clothing or insulation for their homes.
Many would also spend their time exerting energy during the day to keep warm by splitting firewood, hunting, gathering, and doing what they could to prepare for nights or the days when storms kept them inside.

I guess it's our 150th anniversary of being the equality state! According to the sticker December 10, 1869 Wyoming passed the first law securing women's right to vote. Unconditionally. 💘 September 6,1870 the first woman voted in a general election. Her name was Louisa Swain. Pop on in to your local Chamber of Commerce and ask for some stickers! I'm emassing a collection I take pride in! #LOOKATMYSTICKERITSREALLYCOOL #ThatsWYWomen #ThatsWY #GoGoshen #Wyoming #Stickers #StickerCollection #WyomingPride #WomenofWyoming #Cowgirls #WyomingTough #WyomingStrong #WyomingNative #explorewyoming #visitwyoming #wyomingexplored #wildwyoming #WildWildWest #cowgirl #cowgirlup #cowgirlforever #CowgirlAtHeart #AndIHaveTheBraceletToProveIt (at Goshen County, Wyoming) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByEWrOyguKf/?igshid=1794ssu4qt6mt

4am comes early. It's sometimes painful to hear the alarm go off and then try to get out of bed. As much as I couldn't wait to see the morning light on the peaks of the Tetons, it's just never easy to get out of a warm bed. But on this morning, it was worth it. @kristenwilkinsonphotography and I headed to Schwabacher Landing in what would be a frenzied morning racing the gorgeous morning light to get as many spots as possible before we had to get back on the road. When I found this patch of goldenrod on the banks of the Snake River, I knew we'd chosen our spot well and immediately went about making some images. I liked this composition best because it had everything- the reflection, the soft mist dancing over the river, and the flowers bringing some bright color to the scene. Somehow, starting my day with these moments of peace and quite seem to set the tone for the rest of the day. • • • • #tetons #jacksonhole #idaho #wyoming #grandtetonnationalpark #tetonvalley #mountains #tetonsnationalpark #gtnp #grandtetons #wyominglife #wyomingsky #wyomingexplored #wyomingbound #findyourpark #nps #optoutside #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkgeek #betteroutside #goparks #raw_community_member #raw_allnature #raw_reflection #sonyalpha (at Grand Teton National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDgu8oKM-Ez/?igshid=1bacvyvj90bkm

🌿Wildflower Wednesday: Wasatch Beardtongue🌿 . Penstemon cyananthus . These beautiful blue flowers bloomed a few days ago, appearing almost overnight here in the Tetons with the beginning of our local summer season. Commonly called beardtongue for the shape of their flowers, these perennial plants are vibrant throughout the mountain hills. . Preferring the dry soils of the rocky mountain hills and our own sage flats, these sun loving flowers bloom for only about a month each year. . Penstemons are largely considered some of the most strikingly attractive native flowers in North America. Several species have also served Native tribes in medicinal purposes. ·https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Bw3TIF6mb/?igshid=wnps7x8hngd2
