steps of strife
“I. Don’t. Dance.” Each word was venom against her lips, each syllable ached, each sound was an attack of her heart. I have never danced. I will never dance. Who does he think he is asking me to do so? He knows how I feel.  “That’s a pity.” His fingers fell upon her shoulder, they forged a chilling path down her arm until they reached her hand and took hold of it. “I was considering showing these people what true grace really is.” “Grace? Reid, I’ve told you before and I’ll tell you again, I don’t dance.” “But you know how. You’ve seen them do it a thousand times.” She stilled as his other hand touched the small of her back. He angled his body toward her, lowered his head, and smirked in her face. “So, how about it?” “Reid, I-” “Can’t? Won’t? What if you do? What of it then?” He chuckled menacingly, “What is the worst thing that could happen?” Many things. Dreadful things. Falling on my face, making myself more of a laughing stock amongst the nobility - Many, many things. Reid appeared to see the answer in her eyes, he sighed. “Isolde, either you dance with me, or I do something far worse.” A lump formed in her throat. One of anxiety. Of anger. She did not appreciate being cornered. “Like what? Kill a man? You wouldn’t risk the wrath of the people let alone blowing your precious cover. There is nothing you could do that would convince me to dance with you. Nothing at all.” His smirk deepened. “I could do this.” Reid moved his head forward and her heart leapt in alarm. His lips very nearly brushed against hers until she planted her palms flat against his chest and shoved, moving with him with one hand still intertwined, and onto the dance-floor.  As Reid recovered his stance, stepped slowly into position and ensured his hands were in the right place, she leant forward and murmured into his ear. “The moment this ends, I will wipe the floor with you.”

💖𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗥/𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗💖 Hey there, friends! 👋🏼 It's been a while since I shared my face on here so I thought I'd pop in and say hello. 😊 Despite my busy schedule, I've been making progress on my latest project, Snow White and the Guardians of the Sword. I've had a blast coming up with new story ideas and writing out fresh scenes, and I'm feeling more confident than ever about where this story is headed. I owe a lot of that progress to the Writers Write Snippets prompts challenge, which has helped me add a huge chunk to my manuscript. I can't wait to see what new ideas March will bring. My ultimate goal is to finish this novel and get it out into the world. Here's to a productive month, and a new round of Writers Write Snippets! 🙌🏼 So tell me, what's one writing goal you're determined to achieve this year? Share it in the comments below! ❤️🏼 💖💖💖 #writinggoals #themoonsunandskychallenge #writinggoal #betterwriting #writinglifegoals #becauseilovewriting #writinganovel #creativewritingofinstagram #authorsofinsta #yaauthorsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CpNvTOwr-No/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Between the project I decided to sideline for now, the first draft of my current project, a couple short stories, and a script for a short movie, I’ve written right around 90,000 words since October of last year.
I’m hard on myself sometimes. I wonder if my efforts are justified, if I should be spending my writing time doing something else. Well, it’s therapeutic for me. That’s a major plus. I also see myself improving all the time. There are times when my own writing makes me roll my eyes, and other times when I get a little chill and am proud of a certain section.
Regardless, this is more output from this last year than I had from 2019- 2022 combined. I finally got to a point that allows me to sit down and jump right in, instead of twiddling my thumbs and getting frustrated (Still happens sometimes, just not as much). I’ve had some long sessions, but 30 minutes of being focused on only the writing is what’s been working best for me. 30 minutes of balls to the wall rather than 3 hours of pacing around, writing a little here and there.
Honestly, when I wrote as a kid, I romanticized good prose and wasn’t as much in love with the story telling element. I am now, and over 40k into my first draft of my work in progress, the characters are becoming more and more real the further I get along. It can be overwhelming, and sometimes I have doubts, but I can’t deny my progress this past year.
Thanks for all of you who support my writing endeavors. I appreciate it.

Writing siblings
here are actual things that sibling do:
-make fun of their parents together -make fun of their other siblings -take each other’s clothes -fight over chores -gossip about cousins -watch tv or movies that are appropriate to the youngest sibling -watch tv or movies that are NOT appropriate to the youngest siblings  -help with mean teachers -help cheat on assignments for school  -BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE DO NOT CALL EACH OTHER “BRO” OR “SIS”

have you ever written anything SO honest & SO personal in your story that you LITERALLY HAD TO TAKE A NAP AFTERWARDS to replenish the emotional energy you expended in producing that scene, or is that just me???

alrighty, so being tagged by @katwritesshit means i'm up for a very interesting tag game so here goes
rules: answer as many (or as few) of the questions about your WIP as you can
What was the first part of your WIP that you created? - might be my favourite question of the lot but for me at least, it's pretty simple, i start with an idea - a theme of sorts I suppose, and I wanted to write about a heist, I wanted treachery, danger, and crime (lots and lots of crime), and from there I spun the rest of my story
If your story was a TV show, what would the intro song be? - consulting my many, many Spotify playlists has made answering this one very difficult (shoutout once again to @katwritesshit for The World Ender because I love that song) but I'm going to have to say Dinner and Diatribes by Hozier or As It was, also by Hozier, most likely because I've spent a great majority of this story listening to Hozier along the way, since Wasteland Baby is one of my favourite albums and it fits so so well
Who are your favourite character(s) and why? - I feel as though I'm committing to a betrayal here by not saying the character who is supposed to be the main protagonist but I'm going to go for Fenley, purely because his cynical, overall dark demeanour has been the most entertaining to write (and his POV contains some of my favourite scenes of the novel)
What other pieces of media could share a fan base with your WIP? - now this one is FUN. especially since I draw inspiration from so so many things, Throne of Glass, The Cruel Prince, The Mummy (one of my all time favourite movies), Now You See Me, The Witcher - just to name a few, I'm not even going to mention the inspiration for the combat scenes because action movies are just (insert chef's kiss)
What has been your biggest struggle while writing your WIP? - truth be told, finding the time to write, as this labour of love has taken me a solid four (ish, I think) years to write, a lot has happened, I've grown with my novel which is to me at least, a very heartwarming thing
Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them! - sadly there aren't any major animal characters in my story, my characters use horses for transport most of the time but that's about it
How do your characters get around? - well, when they aren't on horseback they're either walking or sprinting for their lives
What part of your WIP are you working on right now? - edits, dreaded, dreaded edits - just kidding I'm loving getting to dive into the earlier parts of my novel and change bits as I go, I'm falling in love with the story all over again and I'm only editing Chapter 7/40(something, the current number escapes my mind)
What aspects of your WIP do you think will draw people in? - hopefully the sheer and utter chaos of unlikely thieves trying to do an impossible thing, the characters are my favourite sort to read about, and the tropes (not giving too much away I do enjoy a good mystery :) )
and that's about it, this was super fun so thanks for the tag!
and passing the metaphorical torch on, I'm going to tag: @the-ellia-west @somethingclevermahogony @unlikelycreationwasteland @leotheponderer @alwri-tes and of course anyone else that would like to give it a go! (being new at tag games appears to be my fatal flaw since i have very little clue who to tag, but here you go!)
(and as usual in my rambly responses, very, very little read through, but in my defence this is a late night post so I feel as though the grammar-police might cut me some slack :) )

Writing status 1
Well...I intended to use this as a sort of accountability source, but that hasn't happened yet.
So it happens now!
I'm writing a novel. I intend it to have mystery, suspense, fantasy, and romance.
I have completed the structure outline. The cast isn't finished yet. I haven't really started on the main plot. Subplots are in progress...maybe I should create a checklist here...

Hello my fellow writer and authors. How are you all? I would like to pose a question. I've got two stories I'm writing. One of them is dear to my heart because it is the first book I started writing. The second is another book I've started which I think has great potential. So lately I've been thinking that I'd like to merge the second story into the first because I think it would make an amazing read. My question is: has anyone done this and what was your experience with it? The image shows representations of what I see the protagonists from each story as. #writerscommunity #writersofinstagram #writinganovel #writerinlondon #writerthings #creativewriting #plotting #writethebook #writersconnection #writer #authorssupportingauthors #authorscommunity #urbanfantasywriters #writersuniverse #novelist #words #intrigue #plottingandplanning #questionsforwriters #writershelpingwriters https://www.instagram.com/p/CRd1nmur7vd/?utm_medium=tumblr

We can give a character depth by ensuring that not everything is as it appears.
One way to do this is to ensure that the character has a different "status" depending on their social circle. For instance, the character might be the boss at home but may be subservient at work. Or they might be the boss at work but a subordinate in their family. By creating situations in which the character's power dynamic changes based on their social situation, we can explore the differences in how the character acts when they have power and how they act when they don't. This is a powerful way to reveal character.
We can also give a character depth by considering how their behavior might be conditional. In Toy Story, for instance, Woody is generally a good friend and leader. However, if his position as top toy is threatened, he turns into an intensely selfish character. This shift based on context shows us that the character's behavior is multi-faceted depending on the situation.
We can also show that there's more to a character than what appears on the surface by injecting a contradiction into the character. For instance, a hypochondriac might have no sympathy for others who are sick. A rat might have no tolerance for those who are dirty. An assassin might be the sweetest person you've ever met--when they're not on the job.
What techniques do you use to inject depth into your character?
