Alphabet City Workflow - Capture to Output
Capture
I used a Nikon D3500 with a 18-55mm lens.
Import
I used the SD card reader that is built in to my laptop. I selected the folder from my SD card with all the new photographs, and moved it to a new folder on my one drive. I named this folder with the date and place the photographs were taken. I then selected all the images that were part of the Alphabet City project and copied these into a separate folder called Alphabet City. Once in the new folder I named the files according to letter.
Edit (Select)
I looked through all of the images and favourited the ones that I liked and wanted to use. I do not ever delete any of my photographs - I keep them all and go through them various times to ensure I am happy and have picked the best as my final images. At this stage, I rename the final files that I have picked to use in the format: FINALletter.
Optimise
The only optimisation I carried out on these photographs was cropping a few that were difficult to get close to or where there was too much distracting elements in the frame.
Export
I saved all the files on my one drive initially, then at this stage I backed them up on my hard drive. The final images were saved as JPEG files. I then used PowerPoint to create the collage - I added all the photographs in then had to adjust and size them myself.
Output
I submitted the final collage for the Alphabet City project by posting it to this Tumblr blog.
What software did you use?
I used the inbuilt photos app on my laptop and Microsoft PowerPoint.
Was this a good workflow?
I think for the most part that I have a good work flow, using the SD card reader is a quick and effective way to get all of the photographs off of my camera and onto my laptop. Making the collage on PowerPoint was not the most effective method as it was very time consuming.
What would you do next time?
I think next time I would do more at the optimising stage, using software such as Lightroom or Photoshop to enhance my images. I would also use a different method to create the collage.
