I once saw a post talking about DNIs on fanfic, and I'm pretty sure that fanfic DNIs originate from people getting harassed over the ships in their fics, which has led to people saying if you ship X (say it's a popular ship for the fandom that you don't ship) then DNI; which, based on my interpretation of the meaning of DNI, means "Don't talk about X on my fic" because of the amount of people who will harass creators over ships
Let me bring up Fl*werfell. For those in the Undertale AU fandom, you may have heard of it. You may think of it as the Fr*ns (au and ship censored so as to not show up when people are looking for content on those things). That's not true. The original FF never had Fr*ns. The original creator got harassed over this, and people would even re-upload the whole au but edited to be Fr*ns, which also led to them being harassed for "having" that ship in it.
Tl;dr: DNIs on fanfic most likely began as a way to mitigate harassment over ships. And if you don't like, don't read and just leave.
