He’s fixing up old RVs for families who lost their homes to California’s worst wildfire
Watching the news coverage of California’s Camp Fire, which devastated the town of Paradise back in November, Woody Faircloth saw an enormous need for temporary housing. So, he created a nonprofit to help. His group has given more than 65 refurbished RVs to Camp Fire survivors.

Mrs. Joann Brown Kidd, age 75 of State Road, died Friday, October 6, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
     Funeral services were held  Monday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Mark Freeman officiating.  Burial was in Scenic Memorial Gardens.  
     Mrs. Kidd was born February 16, 1942 in Wilkes  County, NC to James Howard and Mable Gilbert Brown.  
     She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James Winford Brown.
     She is survived by two daughters, Melena Wilmoth and husband, Andrew, of Thurmond and Gina Chapman of Statesville; two sons, Scott Chapman and Jeff Chapman, both of Stony Point; four grandchildren, Samantha Norman, Grace Norman, John Chapman and Scooter Chapman; one sister, Janet Sprinkle of Millers Creek; and three brothers, Dale Brown of Oklahoma City, OK, Danny Brown of Millers Creek and Roger Brown of North Wilkesboro.
     Flowers will be accepted.

Jimmie Presley McCarter, age 97, of North Wilkesboro, went home to heaven on Friday, October 6, 2017. He was born September 11, 1920 in Wilkes County to William Lee and Lollie Mae Waddell McCarter. He was a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church for the last few years. Mr. McCarter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel Lena Flinchem McCarter; a son, David Alan Seldom; a daughter, Jacqueline Barbara McCarter; son-in-law, David Neal Johnson; daughter's-in-law, Carol Owens McCarter, Jewell Dean Church McCarter and Janet Leigh Fox McCarter.
     Surviving are his children, Ella Mae Sparks and husband Linvel of Traphill, Jimmie W.D. McCarter, Sr. of Mooresville, Steven Lee McCarter, Regina Doretta Woodie and husband Charles, Debbie M. Johnson all of North Wilkesboro, Richard Marvin McCarter of Taylorsville, Vicki Roxanne Torrence and husband Dennis, Rita Starr Shepherd and husband Michael all of Wilkesboro; sister, Erie McDaniels of Burlington; grandchildren, Darlene Colbert, Curtis Lee Sparks, Carol Ann Faircloth, Jimmie W.D. McCarter, Jr., Renee McCarter-Dancy, Tammie Starr Shumate, Matthew Charles Woodie, Richard Marvin McCarter, Jr., Wendy McGrady, Joshua McCarter, Nathan Torrence, Jennifer Shepherd; and great grandchildren, Zach Faircloth, Ali Sparks, Lakyn Sparks, Jewels Dean Maria McCarter, Malana Dancy, Ashton Dancy, Steven Clark Dancy, Andrew McCarter, Addison McCarter, Courtney McGrady, Christina McGrady, Riley Sipes, Trenton Shepherd, Kayden Shepherd, William Shepherd, Christopher Shumate, Catherine Matherly.
     Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Kent Wood and Chris Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Mt. Zion Baptist Church from 2:00 until 3:00 on Wednesday, prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted.
     Miller Funeral Service is charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Clayton Henry Faw, age 83 of Millers Creek, husband of Edna Rash Faw, died Friday, October 6, 2017 at Senior Villages of Wilkes.
     Funeral services were held  at Mountain Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Church, the Rev. Joey Moore, and the Rev. Mike Church officiating.  
     Mr. Faw was born February 2, 1934 in Wilkes  County, NC to Vincent Troy and Lula Mae Mastin Faw.  He retired from Coca-Cola after 34 years and from Wilkes Power Equipment.  Mr. Faw played guitar and was lead singer for the Stone Mountain Travelers.
     He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Sherry Lee.
     He is survived by his wife, Edna Rash Faw, of the home; two daughters, Kathy Nichols of Wilkesboro and Carolyn Killen of Millers Creek; one grandson, Derek Nichols and wife, Amanda, of Davidson; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Keegan Nichols; one sister, Ruby Faw Roten of Millers Creek; and one brother, Albert Faw and wife, Becky; one niece, Janine Faw Cannon; and three nephews, Leslie Roten, Tim Faw, and Stephen Faw.

Grace Delores Felts Johnson, age 84, of Hays, died Friday, October 6, 2017 at her home. She was born May 12, 1933 in Wilkes County to Earl and Vestie Holbrook Felts. She was a member of Little Mtn. Baptist Church. She was known for her love of cooking for her family and friends. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents; two children, David and Danny Johnson; and brothers, Johnny, Troy, and Charlie Felts.
     Surviving are her husband, Rev. Cheslie Johnson; her children, Doug Johnson and wife Shirley, North Wilkesboro, Diane Spears and husband Mike of Millers Creek, Rev. Ricky Johnson and wife Pam of Hays; daughter-in-law, Debbie M. Johnson; brothers, Austin Felts and wife Linda of Millers Creek, Roy Felts and wife Betty, Leon Felts and wife Darlene, Larry Felts and wife Alena all of McGrady; sisters, Faye Teague of Hays, Pansy Osborne and husband Gene, Katie Broyhill and husband Larry all of Moravian Falls, Kathy Faw and husband Larry of Millers Creek; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
     Funeral service was  October 9,   at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ronnie McManus, Rev. Steve Shumate and Rev. Bennie Roten officiating. Burial  followed in Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Hays.

 Fonda Cox, 76
Mrs. Fonda Lee Cox, 76, of Millers Creek, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017.
Fonda was born Thursday, January 1, 1941 to the late Granville Charlie Hincher and Osie Lee Teague Hincher.
     Fonda is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, James Miles and sister, Wanda Hincher Garwood.
     Fonda is survived by her husband, Tommy Cox of North Wilkesboro; sons, Keith Miles and wife, Linda, of Millers Creek, Jeff Miles and wife, Lori, of Las Vegas; daughter, Karen Bergquist and husband, Bryce, also of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Brandon Miles, Jason Milam, Michael Combs, Alexis Miles Desanta, Emily Miles, Becca Bergquist, Brooke Bergquist, Bailey Bergquist; 9 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.  
     The funeral service will be held at Peace Haven Baptist Church on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 2 p.m.  Burial will follow the service at Mt Lawn cemetery in North Wilkesboro. Visitation will be 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Rev. Craig Clayton will be officiating. Flowers will be accepted.

Troy Vaughn Metz, age 51, of Wilkesboro, died Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born June 4, 1966 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to Barry and Karin Gossard Metz. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro and employed with Lowe's Companies in the IT Department. Mr. Metz was preceded in death by a son, Aaron Thomas Metz.
     Surviving are his wife, Robin Metz; two sons, Chandler Metz of Cullowee, N.C., Quinton Metz of Wilkesboro; his father, Barry Metz of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; and his mother, Karin Gossard Cannon of Rocky Mount.
     Memorial service will be held at a later date.
     Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
 Mary Hudson, 66

Mrs. Mary Diane Hudson, 66, of Ferguson, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017.
     Mary was born on Sunday, June 24, 1951 in Mecklenburg County to the late Therlow Gooden and Margaret Bridges Gooden.
     Mary proceeded in death by her parents.
     Mary is survived by her son James Hudson, wife, Paula King Hudson of Wilkesboro, sister, Linda Herlein and husband, John, of Florence S.C. brother, Richard Gooden, of Lincolnton and 3 grandchildren.
     A grave side service was held  October 10,   at Full Gospel Tabernacle in Ferguson.  
     Rev.  Allen Bouchelle will be officiating.

Mr. David Allen Sheets, age 60 of McGrady, died Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
     Funeral services were  held  Tuesday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Kerry Nichols officiating.  Burial was in the Sheets Family Cemetery.  
     Mr. Sheets was born February 19, 1957 to Fred Landon and Connie Royal Sheets. He was a member of Parkway Garden Baptist Church and was plant superintendent at Johnston Casuals.  
     He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Maxie Sheets Hart, and four brothers, twins Billy and Bobby and John and Roy.
     He is survived by his daughter, Whitney Sheets and Josh Sturgill of McGrady; three grandchildren, Tommy Sturgill, Baye Sturgill and Jade Sturgill; three sisters, Betty Kilby, Peggy Royster and husband, William, and Mary Sheets, all of North Wilkesboro;  two brothers, Mike Sheets and wife, Lisa, of Hays, and Tony Sheets and wife, Donna, of North Wilkesboro; and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Sheets of Climax and Sue Sheets of Alamance.
     In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society - Relay for Life, P.O. Box 9, North Wilkesboro NC 28659.
 Edward Coleman, 80

Mr. Edward Donald Coleman, age 80 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, October 4th, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center.
     Funeral services were   October 8th,  at Shady Grove Baptist Church in the Windy Gap Community,  with Rev. Benny Romans and Rev. J.B. Parker, Jr. officiating. Burial was   in the church cemetery.      Mr. Coleman was born December 29th, 1936 in Wilkes County to Dana and Addie Grace Johnson Coleman. He was retired from Gulistan Carpet and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Dorothy Prevette, Cledus Somers, and infant sister, Nancy Coleman; and one brother in law, Clifford Cook.
     Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife, Ruby J. Coleman of the home; a son, Michael Edward Coleman and wife, Tori of North Wilkesboro; one grandson, Camden Edward Dean Coleman; four sisters, Gearldean Cook of Greensboro, Ruth Gaither and husband, Mickey of Statesville, Paulette Osborne and husband, Jerry of Union Grove and Diane Little and husband, Worth of China Grove; two brothers, Paul Coleman and wife, Priscilla of North Wilkesboro and Roger Coleman and wife, Irene of Harmony.
     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2781 S. Windy Gap Road,  North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Lee Roy Benge , age 72, of Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehab in Burnsville. He was born June 14, 1945 in Wilkes County to William H. and Alma Lee Transou Benge. Mr. Benge was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert Lee Benge.
     Surviving are his brother, Junior Benge of Millers Creek; sisters, Susie Trivette of Hickory, Mary Miller of Wilkesboro.
     Funeral service was held October 8,  at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Baptist Church Cemetery.   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600  Park Road, #250 Charlotte, NC 28209.

Mrs. Eugenia "Gene" Somers Byrd, age 85 of Wilkesboro widow of James "Bill" Dewey Byrd, Jr. passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving famiily.
     Gene was born September 1, 1932 to James Harvey Somers and Margaret Wilkins Somers, and was a lifelong resident of Wilkesboro. She was retired from the Town of Wilkesboro as Assistant Town Clerk and had previously been employed with the Northwest Regional Education Center.  She was artistic in needleport, decoupage, beaded flowers and was an avid bridge player. Gene loved her family, friends, her church and the Town of Wilkesboro.
     In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Mickey Emerson.   Survivors include her children; Frances "Lisa" Byrd Lentz of Ronda, Melodie Ann Byrd of Wilkesboro and son; James "Jim" Somers Byrd of North Wilkesboro, two grandchildren; Chris Moran and Sean Moran of Olin, NC, five grandchildren; Skylar, Damien, Lennon, Elana and Jude Moran, two sisters; Susanne Somers Quilici of Hickory, Jane Somers Gantt of Morganton and caregiv

Mr. Paul Jackson Griffin, age 82 of Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, September 25th, 2017 at Avante of Wilkesboro.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, October 6, 2017 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Fred Staley officiating.  Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery on Hwy. 16 in Millers Creek.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 PM prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Mr. Griffin was born June 7, 1935 in Wilkes County to Harley and Anna Lou Church Griffin. He worked in the sawmill business.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son; Melvin Griffin and a sister; Coleen Griffin.
He is survived by his wife; Rosie Spears Griffin of the home, five daughters; Brenda Griffin and husband, Wayne of Wilkesboro, Betty Taylor and husband Richard of Millers Creek, Geraldine Limon of Wilkesboro, Patricia Griffin and husband, John of North Wilkesboro and Ellena Griffin of Wilkesboro, two sons; Mickel Griffin and wife, Sharon of Hays and Billy Griffin of Wilkesboro, twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one brother; Bobby Griffin.
