And looming over me in a really unnerving predatory manner. I kept trying to squirm away but he had a really good hold on me. I don’t remember where or when this ended but I felt understandably freaked out when I woke up.

The night before last, I had three strange dreams.

The first was that I was in a media store (I say this as a loose descriptor because I don’t know what else it could be referred to as). The store itself was really industrialized with all-white walls (maybe they were brick or cinderblock, too, I don’t remember) and heavy overhead rafters like you’d find in Walmart. There were wire racks everywhere filled with merchandise, namely Disney/Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons stuff. The building itself was supposed to be some sort of media production wing of campus and the lobby of the building was set up like a big mall corridor with glass ceilings and neon signs and a movie theater. There was also a cafe on one of the lower levels that had a sort of old-school pizza joint or diner vibe mixed with the seating setup of Garden Grill in The Land at Epcot. I ran into my grandparents (including my late grandfather) seated at one of the booths who flagged me down to talk. Despite trying to get to class, I didn’t protest especially because my grandpop was there. Seeing him in my dreams always wrenches my heart so even if I’m not lucid dreaming, I always make sure to stop and spend time with him every time he visits in my sleep. This time, he and my grandmother said they’d wait for me to get out of class so I could show them around campus. My grandpa was staring straight ahead almost in a catatonic state and I remember standing there longer than I theoretically needed to just begging in the back of my mind for him to turn around and look at me and smile at me. He did and I nearly cried. After that, I rushed around trying to find my class again but it was no use. I was shit out of luck, and evidently other people were, too. I remember running into an old classmate of mine who had a name that reminded me of a car dealership. He was lost, too, and very encouragingly suggested that we team up to try to find the classroom together. In any normal capacity, he was the type of person who never would’ve looked twice at me but I guess a common need unites even the most indifferent of people. As far as I can remember, we never did find the classroom.

“Yes and no. See…when my brothers started bickering hardcore I hightailed it out of Heaven. I was looking for a place to hide and I ran into Loki in a cave.”

“How do you just run into someone in a cave?!” Ketch wondered as he tried the snickerdoodle flavored dough.

He shrugged. “Fate, maybe? I mean, she never bitched at me about it so it mustn’t have mucked anything up. Or could be dumb luck? Of all the caves in all the world, blah blah blah. But anyway. He was having family drama at the time so he agreed to let me take on his mantle. But part of that meant was acting like him and he has a sweet tooth, so” he shrugged casually. “Sweet tooth.”

Ketch nodded. “Did you enjoy it?”

“Yeah, I did. I didn’t hop on to the gravy train until after the peak of their popularity so it was never too much of a drain on my time. There was an uptick in popularity after those movies came out. I’ve never seen so many disappointed faces when I appeared. It was at least a quick and dirty way to weed out those who were genuine in wanting to worship Loki anyway.”

“Dare I ask what happened to those people?”

Ketch only got a sly grin in return.

“Would you go back to it?” Ketch said. “I mean, now that the cat is kind of out of the bag.”

Gabriel suddenly set down his spoon and pushed the dessert away, suddenly looking not hungry. There was another emotion at play on Gabriel’s face, but Ketch didn’t know the archangel well enough yet to decipher what it was.

“It’s….complicated,” Gabriel finally said.

“I couldn’t possibly accept such a lavish gift,” Ketch protested. “You’ve done more than enough for me over these past few days and I –“

Gabriel cut him off, literally. Ketch found himself temporarily unable to speak.

“Money never has been and never will be an issue for me. Besides, technically, I’m registering it under one of my fake names, so you can think of it as an indefinite loan if it makes you feel better. Saving The Planet With Regenerative Agriculture

I recently discussed the concept of regenerative agriculture in my review of the book Sacred Cow. I have been researching this fascinating topic further and am convinced that regenerative agriculture of both plants and animals (or a combination), is a crucial step environmentally. It can drastically reduce carbon emissions and even remove CO2 from the atmosphere and sequester it in the soil.

I also found that the evidence for regenerative grazing discussed in the previous review is more controversial than I thought. I’ll touch on that below. What does seem to be more universally accepted is that regenerative farming of plants, with and without animals integrated into the mix, is much more sound environmentally than current conventional farming practices.

Reversing Man-made Soil Degradation.

In modern agricultural practice, high-yield monoculture crops are grown. This means an entire field is planted with one commodity crop like wheat, corn, soybeans, etc. Not enough organic matter is put back into the soil, but instead this approach relies on ever increasing use of chemicals (fertilizer, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides). This has led to tremendous loss of topsoil, poorly draining soil, and about half the applied chemicals being wasted as they runoff, polluting waterways. There is now a resulting dead zone near the Mississippi delta in the gulf of Mexico, the size of New Jersey. This has been becoming common practice in modern agriculture since about 1950. On the plus side, it has led to high crop yields, and lauded as “the green revolution”. But it’s starting not to work as well, as crop yields are dropping. All of this can be reversed by regenerative practices like no-till agriculture, and use of diverse crop rotations and cover crops. This is described in detail in the book Growing a Revolution: Bringing Our Soil Back to Life [1] by geologist Dr. David Montgomery. This process does not require the use of grazing animals. For example, “green manure” from legumes plays the same role as animal manure, and a roller-crimper can do some of the work the grazing animals do:

These regenerative measures improve the soil health dramatically, reducing or even eliminating the use of chemicals, and making runoff almost nonexistent. After a season or two when the soil as recovered, crop yields meet or exceed those of conventional farms with heavy use of chemicals. In addition, comparisons that claim that conventional practices have a higher yield than regenerative often are for ideal growing conditions, such as a perfect amount of rainfall. In less than ideal conditions, including droughts, which are becoming more common, regenerative farming often out-performs conventional. So it is a myth that we need unstainable conventional agriculture to “feed the world”.

There is a second, more low-tech way that farmland is degraded in much of the developing world: slash and burn agriculture. Brush and even forests are destroyed by burning, after which crops can be grown. But these fields do not remain fertile for long, so the farmers have to move on and repeat the process in a new area. These slash-and-burn fields do not have high crop yields. It is typically small-family farmers following these practices, and they grow, for example, about 80% of the food in Africa. But regenerative agricultural can come to the rescue here also, restoring the previous soil to good health in previously burned fields, and improving crop yields up to a factor of four, as shown conclusively on a wonderful demonstration farm in Ghana. These small family farmers are often too poor to afford grazing animals, but the plant-based regenerative measures (diversity of crop rotations, use of cover crops, etc.) are inexpensive.

Dr. Montgomery’s book conclusively shows how regenerative agriculture can help solve climate change, heal our soil, and feed the planet. And it saves farmers money! I don’t want to be cynical, but we do live in a capitalistic society. It gives me hope when the right thing to do environmentally also happens to be the best financially. There is an anecdote in the book where Dr. Montgomery is driving across Kansas with a guide who is showing him where regenerative agriculture is being practiced. He notices that in some areas the John Deere tractor dealerships seem to be dilapidated, while in others the dealerships seem to be thriving. His guide points out that the thriving dealerships are in areas where there is more regenerative agriculture is, so the farmers are more profitable and can afford new equipment.

Now to the role of animals in soil regeneration. Some regenerative farmers follow a hybrid technique that use the regenerative measure described above but also involves grazing animals. After cash crops are harvested, cattle or other animals graze the fields. This is often done with the cover crops as well. A chapter is devoted to how this is practiced by Gabe Brown on his farm in North Dakota, which inspired me to read the first-hand account in Gabe’s enjoyable book Dirt to Soil: One Family’s Journey into Regenerative Agriculture. Gabe shows how the integration of cattle plus diversified crop rotation and cover crops (for about 30 years now) has dramatically improved the soil quality, in. The other interesting practice he follows is letting chickens range free in fields the cows were just in. They do further cleanup, including eating fly larvae. And the chickens can also be fed grain screenings which would otherwise be discarded.

Economics of Farming

The number of American farmers and farmworkers decreased dramatically from 1900 to the present, while the size of the average farm grew much larger. This was an intentional government policy intended to lead to economies of scale and higher yields. Earl Butz, secretary of agriculture under presidents Nixon and Ford,(who we can also thank for bringing high-fructose corn syrup into the mainstream), famously told farmers “go big or get out”.

There are many rural communities that were decimated by this. Agriculture has become more and more “agribusiness”, controlled by large multinational corporations. Farmers are caught in the middle, having to buy increasingly expensive chemicals from a few large corporations, and then selling their crops at commodity prices to large corporations. The farmers are just considered a link in the supply chain, and the objective is minimize the cost of the final product. This makes it appear that growing large fields of single crops is the best solution because it maximizes yield. But this does not consider external costs like the damage caused by runoff of agricultural chemicals, or the medical costs to consumers eating a diet of cheaper but poorer quality food. This is all described in detail in the books below (how it similarly unfolded in the UK is described in [2]). Regenerative agriculture is a way to help reverse this trend, and in addition to Gabe Brown’s operation, other inspiring examples of this are in these books: [1,4,5]. It makes smaller farms more viable and provides more farm jobs. Better for the environment, the economies of local communities, and our health.

The Regenerative Grazing Controversy

There has been some criticism of regenerative grazing because descriptions of it can be oversimplified to “meat can save the planet”, so the concern is that the regenerative grazing argument can be used for marketing that “greenwashes” meat, which vegans and advocates for reduced consumption of animal foods understandably object to. But backlash against it can dismiss the whole idea of regenerative agriculture, which throws the baby out with the bathwater. There is a good balanced discussion here that admits some environmental benefits may have been exaggerated (like the effect of carbon sequestering) but still does not dismiss the major role regenerative agriculture can play, I still believe the bottom line is the best solution for the environment (and our health) is reduced consumption of both junk foods and animal products, combined with better farming techniques. As one author puts it “eat less, but better, meat” [2]. and I think we should generalize that to less but better foods of all types. I’ll cover the ins and outs of this topic in more detail in an upcoming post.

Conclusion: Regenerative Agriculture, With or without Animals, Will Help Feed Humanity And Save The Planet

We can argue over to what extent animals fit in the mix, but regardless of the percentage of animals vs plants in our diets, in my opinion regenerative agriculture is a key step. Current practices of conventional plant and animal farming are not sustainable.

I’ve got to say, this is a vehicle that looks much better in person than it does in photos. The front end is a lot more three-dimensional than it appears on a computer monitor or phone screen.

Excluding the plug-in hybrid variant, which is still the previous-generation model (for now, at least), just one drivetrain is offered in the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission. If you’re acquainted with the Rogue, this powertrain combination should be as familiar. The engine delivers 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, which isn’t quite enough. Driven normally, this output is perfectly fine and has no trouble motivating the Outlander, but when you need to hustle or you’re transporting a full load, some more zest would be appreciated. At times, this Mitsubishi feels a step or three behind its turbocharged competitors, which include the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.

As for fuel economy, the top-shelf all-wheel-drive model seen here stickers at 24 miles per gallon city, 30 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. In mixed use, however, I’ve been averaging better than 30, which is pretty remarkable.

Part of the reason this Mitsu is so economical is that it features a CVT. These transmissions are a big point of contention for a lot of enthusiasts these days, and while you may not love them, this one works reasonably well for what it is, responding quickly to throttle inputs and simulating gear changes under heavy acceleration for a somewhat more natural feel.

One classy cabin

The redesigned Outlander may be more attractive on the outside, but that’s only part of the story. Slide inside and about five seconds is all it takes to realize this is a whole new breed of Mitsubishi, and it’s seriously nice. Seriously.

From the clean, elegant dashboard design to the comfortable first- and second-row seats to the high-quality materials liberally employed, this SUV’s cabin is absolutely gorgeous. This SEL model with the Touring Package features real aluminum trim on the center console, beautiful contrast-color stitching and semianiline leather. I also adore the subtle diamond texture designers added to the window switches, a pattern that’s echoed on the air vent sliders, audio dials and driving mode selector. Nothing in this SUV looks cheap or feels flimsy, though the comely piano-black accents incessantly attract dust and smudges, so be aware of that and remember to bring some wet wipes.

The new Outlander’s interior is beautifully done, with loads of premium materials and an attractive design.

The Outlander’s front bucket seats are super comfortable, supple enough to cosset your body yet still plenty supportive as to not cause undue fatigue on long trips. The second row is plenty cushy, too, though a skosh more legroom would be nice. Setting this SUV apart from the competition is its standard third-row seat. This is a great feature to have, on paper at least, but it’s super small, something Mitsu folks acknowledge. Really, it’s intended for children only, so don’t expect to cram your 6-foot, 4-inch uncle back there ’cause it ain’t going to end well.

Making life a little easier, there’s technology aplenty in the Outlander. Apple CarPlay is standard across the board, and on SE models and up it even connects wirelessly. Naturally, Android Auto is supported, too, though you’ll have to bring a cable. If you’re wondering, USB type-A and type-C ports are offered. Lower-end Outlanders feature an 8-inch infotainment screen, but this example is fitted with the fancy 9-inch display, which also comes with embedded navigation and a wireless charging pad. The infotainment system is, for the most part, straightforward and speedy, which is all you can really ask for, so no complaints here. If you need more screens in your life, a 12.3-inch reconfigurable instrument cluster is available, as is a 10.8-inch color head-up display.

Other available tech includes features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic high beams, but the Outlander can be equipped with plenty of other amenities. And one must-have feature is Mi-Pilot Assist, basically Mitsubishi’s version of Nissan’s excellent ProPilot Assist adaptive cruise control system with lane centering. This feature works great, accurately tracking road lines and providing a very firm feel, much more so than competing systems. This practically makes the Outlander seem like a guided missile when you engage the system.

Refined, not sporty

When you’re not living life at redline, this SUV’s interior is impressively hushed, with minimal wind and road noise. In fact, it’s quiet enough to rival some luxury cars, which is pretty shocking for a mainstream SUV.

The Outlander’s steering is smooth and free of kickback, plus I love the thick steering wheel rim which is dressed up with perforated leather in this example. My tester’s 20-inch wheels (18s come standard on the Outlander) also look sharp, yet they don’t degrade the ride quality too much. This machine is reasonably firm but never abusive.

Mitsubishi is keen to bill the Outlander as a sportier alternative to other SUVs, but it isn’t. This vehicle is comfortable, refined and efficient, but it really doesn’t feel any livelier than competing car-based utility vehicles (especially when you bury the accelerator), which is just fine. It drives well for what it is and there’s generally little to complain about.

Pricing and availability

You can look for the 2022 Outlander at Mitsubishi dealerships very soon. The base price for a front-drive ES model is about 27 grand, but with the Touring Package, a couple options and $1,195 in delivery fees, this SEL example checks out for $37,995, which is a chunk of change to be sure. Justifying that price, however, the new Outlander is basically as nice as anything else in its class and when you throw in an excellent five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle guarantee as well as a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, this Mitsubishi becomes all the more appealing.

Sure, I wish the Outlander had a bit more powertrain gusto and I don’t always love that CVT, but its refinement, beautiful interior and loads of user-friendly tech are hard to argue with. In fact, this SUV may be better than the Nissan Rogue it shares so much with, which is a major win for the Mitsubishi brand.
