“Women… are not yet all that they might be. Their full day is not yet come.” These words, spoken by the female protagonist of the eponymous novel “Hertha,” still resonate more than 160 years after Swedish writer Fredrika Bremer wrote them. Although the novel is now mostly forgotten outside Scandinavia, "Hertha" was well-known internationally when it was published in 1856, and became tightly woven into the fabric of legal and social progress for Swedish women. Today, the spirit of Bremer and “Hertha” live on in the work of the world’s oldest feminist magazine, also called Hertha, and Sweden’s oldest women’s rights organization, @fredrikabremerforbundet . Find out why you should add this historically-important novel and author to your repertoire in my latest article, published in Viva (@vocal_creators): https://viva.media/the-19th-century-swedish-novel-missing-from-the-feminist-literary-canon #FemaleFriday #FredrikaBremer #Hertha #Sweden #WomenNovelists #Equality #Feminism #History #Women #Literature #HiddenFigures
