REMEMBER THE PINK CADILLACS?
Business leader and entrepreneur Mary Kathlyn Wagner was born on May 12, 1918, in Hot Wells, Texas.
Ash was a pioneer for women in business, building a substantial cosmetics empire.
In 1939, Ash became a salesperson for Stanley Home Products, hosting parties to encourage people to buy household items.
She was so good at making the sale that she was hired away by another company, World Gifts, in 1952.
Ash spent a little more than a decade at the company, but she quit in protest after watching yet another man that she had trained get promoted above her and earn a much higher salary than hers.
Ash wanted everyone in the organization to have the opportunity to benefit from their successes.
Sales representatives—Ash called them consultants—bought the products from May Kay at wholesale prices and then sold them at retail price to their customers.
They could also earn commissions from new consultants that they had recruited.
Commercial Success
All of her marketing skills and people savvy helped make Mary Kay Cosmetics a very lucrative business.
The company went public in 1968, but it was bought back by Ash and her family in 1985 when the stock price took a hit.
The business itself remained successful and now annual sales exceed $2.2 billion, according to the company's website.
At the heart of this profitable organization was Ash's enthusiastic personality.
She was known for her love of the color pink and it could be found everywhere, from the product packaging to the Cadillacs she gave away to top-earning consultants each year.
She seemed to sincerely value her consultants, and once said "People are a company's greatest asset."
Entrepreneurial Venture
After her bad experiences in the traditional workplace, Ash set out to create her own business at the age of 45.
She started with an initial investment of $5,000 in 1963.
She purchased the formulas for skin lotions from the family of a tanner who created the products while he worked on hides.
With her son, Richard Rogers, she opened a small store in Dallas and had nine salespeople working for her.
Today there are more than 1.6 million salespeople working for Mary Kay Inc. around the world.
The company turned a profit in its first year and sold close to $1 million in products by the end of its second year driven by Ash's business acumen and philosophy.
The basic premise was much like the products she sold earlier in her career. Her cosmetics were sold through at-home parties and other events.
But Ash strove to make her business different by employing incentive programs and not having sales territories for her representatives.
She believed in the golden rule "treat others as you want to be treated," and operated by the motto: God first, family second and career third.
Personal Life
While she stepped down from her position as CEO of the company in 1987, Ash remained an active part of the business. She established the Mary Kay Charitable Foundation in 1996.
The foundation supports cancer research and efforts to end domestic violence.
In 2000, she was named the most outstanding woman in business in the 20th century by Lifetime Television.
The cosmetics mogul died on November 22, 2001, in Dallas, Texas.
By this time, the company she created had become a worldwide enterprise with representatives in more than 30 markets.
She will be best remembered for building a profitable business from scratch that created new opportunities for women to achieve financial success.
Married three times, Ash had three children—Richard, Ben and Marylyn—by her first husband, J. Ben Rogers.
The two divorced after Rogers returned from serving in World War II. Her second marriage to a chemist was brief; he died of a heart attack in 1963, just one month after the two had gotten married.
She married her third husband, Mel Ash, in 1966, and the couple stayed together until Mel's death in 1980.

5 Business Trends to Expect in 2022
It was just less than two years ago when our whole world changed. No matter how different we think we are from the people we meet, the events that began in early 2020 intrinsically connect us all as the global pandemic has become a cultural touchstone and forever changed who we are as people and how we do business.
As we all shake off the debris of these tumultuous times, let’s take a look at what we can expect as we march forward into 2022.
The Gig Economy. For years employees worked long hours with a growth in income far below that of the 20th century. When the pandemic hit, businesses had varied reactions as to what to do with their employees, which left a good portion of the workforce feeling jaded and revaluating their career choices. Enter the great resignation. The Gig Economy was already on the uptick, but the pandemic really put a spotlight on the benefits of this kind of work. Meaning the economy has opened a window for companies that offer gig work opportunities, management, and support.
Going digital is no longer optional, it’s a necessity. Millennials and Gen Z combined make up over half the US population. And while Millennials in particular have less wealth than their parents, they are still an economic powerhouse for buying and influence. Both generations are digital natives, companies without websites, apps, and other ways to digitally conduct business will be left behind and in some cases be seen as illegitimate or less trust-worthy to Millennial and Gen Z buyers.

USPTO launches the Expanding Innovation Hub, a new online platform to encourage greater participation in the patent system

Today, as part of Women’s History Month, the USPTO has officially launched the Expanding Innovation Hub (“the Hub”), an online platform available on the USPTO website that provides resources for inventors and practitioners to encourage greater participation in the patent system. The new platform is yet another step the USPTO has taken to broaden the innovation ecosphere, to inspire novel inventions, to accelerate growth, and to drive America’s global competitive edge. It builds on our SUCCESS Act report to Congress of 2019, as well as our Progress and Potential report on women inventors.
“Expanding Innovation” is part of the USPTO’s effort to inspire more women, minorities, veterans, and geographically and socioeconomically diverse applicants to join the innovation economy. Important pillars of that effort include education and mentorship. On the Hub, you will find the new Demystifying the Patent System Toolkit, designed to help innovators understand the process of obtaining a patent. Additional resources on the Hub include the Mentoring Toolkit, intended to assist organizations in establishing an infrastructure to connect experienced innovators with the next generation in their organization; and Community Group Resources, designed to help organizations establish an infrastructure to connect groups of employees with shared characteristics, interests, and goals.
These new tools are in addition to many other efforts at the USPTO to help expand the innovation ecosystem. We will continue to host a wide variety of events to amplify this message, such as Invention-Con and the Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium. We have a pro se assistance program to help inventors who are not represented by counsel apply for patents. We have a pro bono network, and we also work with 60 participating law school clinics, all to help inventors and entrepreneurs secure free or discounted legal services. We provide a host of other online resources to help guide and educate inventors as well.
We also continue to expand our reach geographically. In addition to our headquarters in Alexandria, we have four regional offices in Detroit, Denver, San Jose, and Dallas, and 83 Patent and Trademark Resource Centers located in public, state, and academic libraries across the country. These centers not only offer a physical connection to valuable government resources, but they also offer regular programming, office hours, and staff trained to assist inventors and entrepreneurs with intellectual property (IP) research.
The USPTO also supports dozens of STEM-related programs that provide education about IP to young men and women. These include programs in partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, such as Camp Invention, which is offered in school districts in every state, and the Collegiate Inventors Competition, which takes place each year at the USPTO; the National Summer Teacher Institute, which brings invention and IP into the nation’s classrooms; collaborations with historically black colleges and universities; the Girl Scout IP patch, which is available to Girl Scout troops across the nation; and so much more.
Now, with the new Expanding Innovation Hub on our website, inventors will have a central location to find information about all of our programs and resources.
America’s economic prosperity and technological leadership depend on a strong and inclusive innovation ecosystem. The world of entrepreneurship once evolved among the masculine and the brave has now become a common place among both men and women.
We have seen the tides change and it is already far too long since we last heard that this thing is for men and another thing is for women. There no longer is a separation of opportunities; all of us are already playing on the same terrain.
The sad thought though is that there are too few funding resources and help groups for women entrepreneurs. Good funding resources are very crucial especially for women who are just starting out with business. These are rare indeed that is why women tend to resort to using their credit cards, family loans and assistance from friends, which in most cases are hardly ever helpful.
However, you see, funding for a business is only one of the many problems among women entrepreneurs. They may also be having troubles in building websites, juggling with researches and making press releases for promotions of enterprise. In addition, there are problems in selling one or two of their products and in contacting clients. Though all that may sound difficult, they surely are worth the time of woman entrepreneur.
After all, she is building in here her business.
Various organizations and the government has seen all the hardships a woman entrepreneur has to undergo to be able to make it to the supposedly men’s world. This is why they have provided programs for minority businesses to see what it is like being among the greats in the businesses, or at least experience some of their glories.
If you are a woman entrepreneur and is interested in getting grants, the first thing you would want to do is to identify if you are qualified for being given a grant.
The most common qualifications are:
Obviously, you should be a female or depending on the program, must come from the minority sector
You must own the majority share in your business
In addition, your business must show lucrative opportunities for growth
There are a number of government and private agencies that provide grants for women entrepreneurs at various levels.
For the federal level, women can undergo self-certification and apply for the Central Contracting Registry database from which many government and private contractors gather to search for small business.
Other programs may be seen on local level where advantages are presented and benefits are granted. It is just the matter of finding them and apply for one that you think you can create your real potentials from.
In addition, because of their own commitment to provide diversified services and opportunities, large corporations are creating grants for women entrepreneurs. Normally, the federal government to create further services to improve their employment base and to create equal allocations for small business owners mandated these large companies.
Well, if you cannot be reached by these options you may always turn to your previous employer and create a market for him, make him your first client. Only, you need to be very careful and see if this would actually pass to your previous boss. If you are not tactful enough, you might find yourself facing resignation or losing your job. This might be risky but do not be too afraid. Most former employers do make outsourcing for their previous workers to help them start create their own businesses. After all, this will provide them with an extra chance to leverage their compliance to their set-aside goals.
Be warned though that the application process for grants may be time consuming and very demanding. Oftentimes, the providers set specific time for waiting periods about the processing of the grants for women entrepreneurs. In addition, sometimes, bureaucracies may even take the toll of having you wait for several months before your certification is released.
Small-business grants for women entrepreneurs are essentially free financing, as opposed to business credit cards or small-business loans that you must pay back. Understandably, the competition for small-business grants is fierce, and it takes considerable time and effort to win them. But if you’re up for the challenge, the payoff can be worth it.

Office of Women’s Business Ownership (OWBO)
The Office of Women’s Business Ownership helps women entrepreneurs through programs coordinated by SBA district offices. Programs include business training, counseling, federal contracts, and access to credit and capital.
The OWBO oversees Women’s Business Centers (WBCs). These centers seek to level the playing field for all women entrepreneurs, who still face unique obstacles in the business world.
Businesses receiving assistance from WBCs see a significantly better success rate than those without similar support. Find your nearest center.
Funding for women-owned small businesses
The 8(a) Business Development program helps small, disadvantaged businesses compete in the marketplace. Check with WBCs and local assistance resources for guidance, and our Lender Match tool for finding capital.
Women-owned small businesses can also take advantage of SBA loan programs. Our partners offer advice and counseling to help choose the right path for your company.
Women-Owned Small Businesses (WOSB) Federal Contracting program
This program helps women-owned small businesses compete for federal contracts. Understand the eligibility requirements before applying.
The SBA also works with federal agencies to increase contracting opportunities and achieve the government’s five-percent contracting goal for women-owned small businesses. Keep an eye out for matchmaking events targeting both the federal and private procurement.

DreamBuilder introduces participants to all areas of business ownership through a carefully crafted and engaging curriculum, featured in English and Spanish. At the conclusion of the program, women leave with a business plan to start their own business or develop an existing one.
