Bone is big enough that we can move to out of the valley. Hopefully wherever we go next won't take our last pup away from us.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 14:
I brought a mule deer fawn for Bone.
- - -
We killed a cow elk on the western hill.
- - -
Our territory is shrinking, but I can't bear to leave Bone again, and I injured my leg on the last hunt. Either Clover will deal with it, or our territory will just disappear out from under us.
- - -
A grizzly attacked in the middle of the night. Clover chased it away, and Bone stayed hidden the entire time.

Day 13:
Coyotes attacked at dawn. We killed one of them, then caught the scent of an elk herd on the wind.
- - -
We took down a cow in the northern hills, inside a stranger pack's territory. We ate our fill and brought what we could back to the pups, then slept for a few hours.
Bone and Snowfall are getting bigger every day.
- - -
Snowfall is dead! They were playing at the edge of the grass and I don't even know how the stranger got so close in the darkness, their coat was so bright. They killed Snowfall before any of us could react.
We killed them, chasing them even after they gave up the fight, their tail tucked between their legs to beg for mercy. How can they kill my pup and then demand mercy? How can they kill my family and then think the smallest submission will forgive everything?
They were from the northern pack, whose territory we killed a cow elk in. That is not an insult. It's not an offense. They have the carcass all to themselves now. We did not go near their den or threaten their pups in any way. Even if I'd known where they were I wouldn't have harmed them.
Bone is all we have left now.
I'm sorry, Snowfall. I'm sorry.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 12:
Snowfall and Bone are enjoying the new area, and in the distance I could see a single cow elk grazing by themselves, so I went out to see if I could find the fawn they were clearly guarding.
What I said earlier, about hoping we would stumble onto one?
Well, I wasn't expecting it to be literal. I stepped on the poor fawn, not expecting it to be so close to our rendezvous spot while the cow was still so far away.
I killed it quickly, not wanting it to suffer knowing what was going to happen. I hope it was too young to know what death was.
The cow charged over to attempt a rescue, but by then I was already carrying the dead fawn, turning to bring it to my family. They saw that it was too late, and skidded to a sudden stop, sending clouds of dust kicking up into the air.
I felt their eyes on me the whole way back to my family.
- - -
Ravens found our rendezvous spot, and are making a game of snatching bits and pieces of the fawn out from Bone and Snowfall's mouths. If I had any more fear for Snowfall's health, I would put a stop to it, but I have to admit it's amusing to watch, and good training for them for the future. They'll have to learn to defend their food if they don't want it to be taken from them. Coyotes, foxes, bears, and eagles are not as playful, or as funny, as ravens. I'd prefer they learn to defend their food from ravens first, rather than coming face to face with another large predator as their first experience.
The cow elk is still out there in the field, as though they're watching us. I don't know if elk can have more than one fawn in a season. Do they have another fawn out there depending on them? Are they somehow hoping this one survived?
I don't like it.
I'm going out to confront them. Maybe they'll leave if they can smell the blood of their fawn on my fur and realize it is too late to save them.
- - -
The cow is dead. They didn't run away, they just stood there watching me approach, just watched me circle them, trying to get them to move, even growling and snarling.
If they decided to come any closer, they could kill Bone or Snowfall just by stepping on them. I couldn't get them to leave, so I had to kill them, to make sure they wouldn't kill my pups in revenge for their fawn.
This at least means there will be plenty of food to go around, including for the ravens.
- - -
Clover and I went out to refresh our territory markings, and ate the very last of the cow elk we killed higher up in the hills. Clover went back ahead of me while I went to refresh the next marker.
- - -
I was greeted by a chorus of howl from Clover, Bone, and Snowfall as I came down the hill back into the valley.
Bone came to cuddle with me, and Snowfall lay down next to Clover, and we slept the heat of the day away and into the night.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 11:
The pups are big enough to start chewing food for themselves, so Clover and I went back to the bull elk and brought some back. Bone was the first to pounce on the chunk, and seemed more exited than I'd ever seen them.
The deer should be giving birth soon, so hopefully we'll be lucky enough to stumble over some of the fawns.
- - -
Clover was right. Even though there's more space for the golden eagles to attack from, the open sky means I saw this one before it got close enough to be a threat, and got Snowfall and Bone inside the den before it was overhead.
I went in to check on them, and realized the three of us could barely fit. They had to climb on top of eachother to get in by themselves.
They're too old for the den, and as nice as this hill is, the lack of ground cover means that there's also nowhere for our pups to hide once they outgrow the den entirely. They aren't big enough to fend for themselves yet, so we'll have to find a spot where they'll have places to run to if danger is near.
- - -
The sun is starting to set, but from up here on our hill, I can see a burnt pine tree not far into the valley, standing out on its own in the field, with plenty of patches of taller brush that the pups could hide in, but few enough surrounding it that nothing could sneak up on us.
If the pups were upset by moving again so soon, they didn't show any sign of it. Just to be on the safe side, I carried Bone, with Snowfall trotting at my heels, and Clover bringing up the rear.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 10:
I spent the day patrolling our territory to make sure no strangers would want to enter. There were no problems at the den when I got back, and I fell asleep immediately.
Soon, the pups will be big enough that we won't need a den at all. I'm sure Bone will enjoy the freedom.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 9:
I killed a cow elk on my own at the edge of our territory.
Snowfall is gaining weight and is almost the same size as Bone now.
A golden eagle attacked. Bone was closest to me, so I grabbed them. Snowfall was too panicked, and the eagle too close, to reach the den, so I crouched over them with Bone in my mouth while Clover circled us. The eagle gave up and flew away.
We'll have to move somewhere with more shelter, further into our territory so there's less opportunity for strangers to intrude.
- - -
Clover doesn't want more tree cover, they said that would give other predators more chance to attack.
Our first den was in a clearing in the woods, with both open sky and some tree cover, as Bone, the adventurer, has always tried to get lost in.
Clover wants to move to a den where we will be able to see in every direction. As long as we are paying attention, we should be able to see the eagles before they get close to pose a threat.
We scouted out a good location, and brought down a mule deer not too far away.
We're going back to the original den to bring the pups over now. The fleas have gotten so bad I almost fell over while chasing the mule deer when they suddenly started biting my leg all at once. I ended up getting hit in the jaw hard enough to bruise. It hurts to eat, but not enough to stop me from eating.
Hopefully moving to a new den will leave most of the fleas behind.
- - -
Bringing the pups over went better than I thought it would. Aside from Bone getting distracted playing in the water at the flooded river, nothing went wrong. Snowfall kept up without any trouble, and Bone seemed to just be happy to be going somewhere new.
Our new den is dug into the side of the sandy slope above the valley, with a view all the way across to where we were before, and to the east and the west. The slope above us to the north is the only weak point, but Clover has volunteered to keep watch up there.
Snowfall immediately went in to explore the new den, then came back out to nap with the rest of us in the hot sun.
- - -
The night sky is clear, without a cloud in sight.
Clover wants to hunt again, so we sent the half-asleep pups inside the den and went down into the valley.
We found a small herd of bull elk – only two of them, both injured already. We brought one of them down with almost no effort, so we'll be eating well for a while.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 5:
Bone started running away, again, but this time I can't be upset. I'm too relieved. Snowfall is eating well, and running and tumbling with their siblings, almost entirely back to normal.
Now that they're getting their strength back, I'm surprised (though I probably shouldn't be) at how bold they are. They don't wander as far as Bone, but it's still further than I like when they're still weak.
- - -
It all happened so fast. I sent the pups into the den, Clover and I planning to go eat as much of the remainder of the elk carcass as we could. And then the grizzly appeared as though from out of nowhere, charging out of the woods downwind so we couldn't smell them, aiming right for the den, where Bone's tail was just disappearing obediently into the shadows.
For a few seconds, I was too shocked to move, frozen in place. Pain erupting across my side as the bear slammed me to the ground as it charged past broke me out of the shock. It took what felt like forever to scrabble back to my feet, and by that time, Clover had their jaws around one of the bear's hind legs, snarling as the grizzley roared in pain and anger. They swung around, one paw aiming for Clover's head, and Clover dodged away just in the nick of time. Then I had my own teeth buried in the bear's thick, musky fur on their other ankle.
We managed to chase them away, hopefully for good.
I went inside the den to make sure the pups were okay, and reassure them that Clover and I were. Clover decided they wanted to stay by the den to watch over the pups, so I set off for the elk carcass alone.
Dark clouds were forming in the distance, but the sky over the den was still bright.
After a while, it started to rain.
When I reached the carcass, I was happy to see that there was still more than enough for me to eat my full, and carry some back to the den. My risk had paid off. But next time, I planned to pick an easier target. There's not much time left before the calves are no longer calves.
I got back to the den with no problem, and by then it was raining there too, with lightning flashing and thunder booming overhead.
I sat down the chunk I'd brought back for Clover, and Snowfall ate their fill of the elk I regurgitated for them, with Bone and Rabbit ate the rest. We all curled up together to sleep.
I dreampt that there were wolves who had antlers like elk, but fought by rearing up onto their hind legs and boxing with their front legs like hares.
Clover frantically woke me up to tell me that Rabbit was sick.
- - -
I stayed with the pups while Clover went to get their own food.
Bone began to wander off as usual, this time dragging a stick bigger than they were, which made it easier to catch up with them, even though I hated to leave Rabbit's side. They were listless, hardly touching any food and ignoring Bone and Snowfall's attempts to play.
I picked up Bone, and to my shock, Snowfall went trotting past me as casually as anything. And then they just kept going. I had to put Bone down and sternly order them both to get back to the den, unable to carry them both at the same time. They went back willingly enough, with me right behind them. Rabbit was sitting in a different spot when we got back, and wagged their tail when they saw us.
I was about to go over to check on them when I realized a golden eagle was circling above.
I barked immediately for the pups to get inside, but Bone glanced up and saw the eagle, and panicked, running off towards the trees instead of towards the safety of the den. I barked again for Rabbit and Snowfall to get inside, unable to see where they were in the growing darkness. I ran for Bone, the only pup I could still see, trying to keep an eye on the eagle above even as I scooped Bone up and ran for the den.
I shoved Bone into the den, then spun around, desperately scanning the trees and grass for any sight of Snowfall or Rabbit, unable to see where the eagle had gone. Where were they? Where were they?
I don't know how long it took me to run panicked circles around the den's clearing, hearing the wingbeats of the eagle threateningly above me, before I realized they might have already gone into the den. I dashed back and shoved inside, to find the three pups huddled in the back together.
I breathed a sigh of relief, and curled up around them, reassuring them, and myself, that they were safe.
- - -
Eventually I went out to make sure it was safe, and found Clover waiting for us. I called the pups out, and, as regular as the sunrise, Bone immediately set off for the treeline like it was home.
So healthy you'd never even know they were sick, Snowfall is almost as bad as Bone now. I don't think I'm ever going to get a moment's rest with these pups.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 4:
The sun has risen, and I've tried to chase the bull elk further into our territory, but they've gone in the opposite direction. I'm going to call Clover to help. It's a risk, but a bull elk will feed us long enough to be worth it. One is limping badly, and I'm sure we can kill it without getting hurt to badly.
- - -
I was too hungry to wait, so I started the hunt without Clover. A lucky blow caught me on the jaw, and it hurts, but it won't slow me down too much. I kept pace with the weakest elk, chasing it over the plains and hills. Twice it stumbled and fell, and twice I took my chance to rip into it as well as I could. But each time it got back up, and I had to jump away. Bull elk can turn on you as quickly as you can blink. Even if they're down, you do not want to mess with those antlers. Not even when they're covered in velvet.
We passed two other herds of elk while we ran. The irony is absurd. I could have stopped to hunt one of the does or calves, but I didn't. This bull was already weak, there was no point giving up this hunt for another that might not even succeed.
Clover caught up to me right at the end, and delivered the killing blow themselves, lunging for is throat with perfect aim.
I've eaten my fill, and picked up a chunk to carry home. Only after taking the first few steps away from the carcass did I realize how exhausted I was. The ravens had flown down before I'd even started eating, and it as a testament to how tired I was that I hadn't noticed them circling overhead the entire hunt. That was how Clover had known where to find me.
It's a long walk back to the den, but I won't risk sleeping away from it. The pups need this food, especially if Snowfall is going to recover.
It's started snowing, and I'm choosing to take that as a good sign. Snow fall for Snowfall.
Please let them survive.
- - -
The snow continued to fall even after we all fell asleep, happy and full, and kept falling even after we woke up. Snowfall is bouncing around with their siblings, still nowhere near as strong as they were before they got sick, but they're nowhere near death's reach anymore.
- - -
I saw the strangers as they were coming down the hill from the south. There was no time to think, or pause, or hesitate. I barked a warning to the cubs, and, startled by my intensity, even Bone ran in without waiting to see what was happening.
And it wasn't a moment too soon, because the next thing I knew, two strangers were slamming out of the brush, and their teeth were ripping at the fur of my neck, trying to kill me like they had a grudge. I'd thought we would have a standoff, that I would be able to intimidate them away wthout a fight. I was wrong.
Then Clover was on top of one of them, tearing at their ears, and they let go. The rest is a blur of snarls and growls, teeth flashing and blood spattering onto the snow to steam in rage.
We chased them away, biting at their tails and ankles whenever they were within reach. If they ever come back again, I won't stop until I kill them.
- - -
I revisited the bull elk carcass. There's still plenty left. I brought some home for the pups and fell asleep as soon as I laid down.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 3:
Snowfall has gotten worse again.
I saw a hare and sent the pups inside the den before I went to catch it. Bone didn't try to sneak away, so that's something to be proud of. The hare didn't really help my hunger, but it's better than nothing, and the pups can play with some of the fur. A golden eagle was circling overhead when I got back to the den, so I made sure the pups wouldn't come back out until it was safe.
I think that was the boldest eagle I've ever seen. It swooped down only a few body lengths above me, and I could see it turning its head to try and see into the den behind me. If I'd known it was going to do that ahead of time, I would have tried jumping for it. I've never eaten eagle before.
It flew away afterward, and good riddance.
Clover regurgitated more food for the pups, and even though they can barely stand to walk, Snowfall came over to eat some with Rabbit.
Bone started to wander away again, this time charging off towards the trees like they were on a mission from the moon itself. Clover almost tripped over Rabbit running to catch them before they got too far.
Thank the moon for Clover, they ate enough food for the pups to eat again. They put it right in front of Snowfall, who ate a little, but doesnt' seem interested. Rabbit ended up eating most of it, while Bone started digging in the sand like they wanted to make their own den. That's preferable to running off and getting lost.
Rabbit and Bone fell asleep, and Snowfall went to curl up with them. They could barely move themselves the single bodylength they needed to to lie down again, and didn't so much as lie down as collapse. I don't think they're going to make it. This isn't fair.
I'm going to keep watch while they sleep.
I think Snowfall is dying. I can barely see their sides moving as they breathe, and it's only by putting my nose in front of theirs that I can feel their breath. I hope if they're dreaming, they're dreaming of nice things.
Rabbit and Bone are still asleep. I don't know if they're old enough to remember Snowfall if they don't make it. Will they remember that they had a third siblings, or will they always just think it was the two of them from the start?
What if something happens to either of them? What if all of my pups die? How did my parents cope with the loss of so many of my siblings? I'm so lucky I survived, I don't want to lose any of mine.
Bone woke up first again, and immediately began to wander off. I brought them back, and almost growled at them in my anxiety. I was terrified that Snowfall would be dead when I went to check on them, but they were still breathing.
They're all awake now, even Snowfall. Bone and Rabbit were playing, and Rabbit tackled Bone and knocked them over on top of Snowfall. I thought my heart was going to stop, but they didn't seem hurt by it. And then of course Bone picked a direction and started running for all thier little legs were worth, and I had to run to catch them before they went down into the valley. This time I did growl at them. I'm so frustrated. They're too young to know why running off on their own is dangerous, and they won't understand why I'm upset with them either. I carried them back and sat them right in front of the den. They have to learn to stay nearby. I can't watch over Snowfall and be running off after them every two seconds.
When I turned around again to go back to Snowfall and Rabbit, I was shocked to see that Snowfall was actually playing with Rabbit. They were still lying down, but Rabbit had brought over a peice of bone, and both of them were chewing on it and tugging at it. I was almost worried Rabbit would be too rough, but they're the smallest of the three, and...I guess they do know they need to be gentle with Snowfall.
Bone seems dejected, and I feel guilty for growling at them. They came over to cuddle against my side, and I did my best to reassure them that I wasn't angry anymore.
Snowfall's gone back into the den, walking so slowly I almost wanted to pick them up and carry them just so they wouldn't have to expend the energy. But if they're looking for somewhere safe and alone to die, I can't take that away from them, as much as I might want to keep them by my side as long as I can. Everyone has to die someday. I just wish my pup would have gotten a few more days to explore the world before they had to leave it.
- - -
Rabbit and Bone both ran off together, and I picked up Bone, assuming Rabbit would follow us back. They like to stay with their siblings or with me. They were following for a little while, but the next time I looked back they were gone. I had to drop Bone off at the den and frantically run back, hoping that this time Bone would just stay still long enough for me to find Rabbit.
I did find them, and ran back to the den as fast as I could. Bone was just sitting there waiting for me as though nothing was wrong at all. I don't know what I'm going to do with them.
I've howled to call Clover back. I need to eat before I won't have the energy to walk, let alone chase anything. The stress is getting to me, and I need a break.
Bone and rabbit seem to have finally tired themselves out, thank the moon, so while I wait for Clover to return, they're taking a nap on a softer patch of grass above the den.
I'm going to join them, at least until Clover gets back. Maybe the sleep will do me good.
- - -
Snowfall is alive! The sound of the pups begging Clover for food woke me up, and I was shocked to see Snowfall begging for food along with the other two, wagging their tail and whining with less strength than their siblings, but more than they had before they went into the den. They're alive.
I almost can't believe it. I'm so glad.
Clover couldn't find anything to eat on their own, but they're going to stay and watch the pups while I take my turn. They said the territory strength is good, but they caught the scent of strangers on the western side. I'll head there first.
- - -
I startled a rabbit out of hiding not that far from the den, and snapped my teeth around it before I'd even fully comprehended what was happening. There was hardly any meat to be worth it, and I almost felt bad to have killed it without even trying.
Then Clover emerged out of the same brush in front of me and almost scared me half to death. They wanted to come with me to help hunt, but I insisted they return to the den to watch over the pups. We can't risk leaving them alone when Snowfall is still so sick, and who knows how far Bone would get with no one to keep them near the den.
They went, back, and I continued west.
- - -
I saw two mule deer, a doe and her fawn, now almost an adult, as I was coming down the hills. They're in flower now, with tall pink flowers whose name I never can remember. The mule deer were tempting in my hunger, but I've never had much luck catching them.
I'll wait to find an elk herd, where they'll be more chance of finding a weak one that I can take down by myself. I'll eat my fill, then bring some back for the pups and Clover.
I wonder if the elk mourn their dead the way we do.
- - -
I saw a boar grizzly, but they weren't looking for a fight, and ran off as soon as they saw me.
- - -
It almost seems like the bears are the only ones out tonight. The only scent I can pick up on the wind is grizzley, the flowers, and our own pack markings. All I want to catch is the scent of elk. I'm so hungry I could probably eat a whole calf all by myself.
- - -
I finally caught the scent of an elk herd, coming from up north. That's in another pack's territory, and the smell of strangers is stronger than the scent of the elk. But I think I'm going to have to risk it.
- - -
The elk herd is in the same direction as this pack's territory markings. Maybe I can sneak in and claim it for us.
- - -
Had a close call with a stranger, and they chased me almost right into a herd of dispersal elk. The herd began to stamepede, and I ran with them, not wanting to pick a fight with a stranger when I was so far from the den.
Normally I wouldn't risk trying to take down a bull elk, but their antlers are still covered in velvet, and there's a lot of them. Maybe one is weak enough that I can take it down.

Wolf Quest Novelization Day 2:
Snowfall is sick. Bone got excited by a butterfly and wandered away from the den, but I found them and brought them back quickly enough they didn't even realize they should be afraid. We'll have to teach the pups to be more cautious. It's hard when this is only their second day of being outside the den. They don't know what anything is, they don't know what the word 'fear' means yet. I wish they didn't, but they'll have to learn. Otherwise we might lose them. Bone certainly has learned nothing, because even after Clover carried them back to the den again, they were already wandering off again. Clover and I are both too anxious to leave Snowfall to hunt or patrol the territory, so we're going to take a nap with the pups and hope the sleep does Snowfall some good.
I woke up before Bone, fortunately, because as soon as they were on their feet again, they were climbing up the hill again. Snowfall has only gotten worse. They're staying where they went to sleep, sitting up, but not moving around or even playing with their siblings. I lost one of my siblings to sickness, but it wasn't this fast. They went on for days before they succumbed, with our parents fretting over us the entire time. It was snowing when they finally died. I hope we haven't cursed Snowfall to the same fate because of their name.
Clover has gone off on their own, to look for food, or to patrol, I'm not sure. I hope they find food, everyone's starting to get hungry, including me.
Snowfall at least doesn't seem upset. I don't think they understand what being sick means. They are at least happy enough to roll around on the ground and howl along with us, but they still aren't really playing with their siblings. I don't know why this is happening. They're so young, this is only their second day outside of the den. How could they have gotten sick?
Bone is clearly a loner at heart. They seem impatient every time I bring them back closer to the den, and Rabbit tries to play with them. It would be fine, if only they'd stay near the den. If something happens, it'll be harder to keep them safe if they're further away.
The sun is starting to set now, and Bone seems to have finally figured out that they're supposed to stay where I can see them. Which is good, because of the three, they have the darkest coat, and would be the most difficult one to find in the dark.
We all fell asleep together, and a little while later Clover returned, excitedly waking up the pups for food. Bone and Rabbit both ate the first pile without hesitation, but Snowfall didn't seem interested. But they ate the second, so I hope that means they're going to get better. A wolf that doesn't eat is a wolf that doesn't live.
I'm still hungry, but it's nothing that can't wait a day.
