Rays characters + Names
Most names in Rays seem to stem from either Irish origin or Norse mythology, so I wanted to try listing out some potential origins/meanings for everyone's names. Please note that none of these have official confirmation and are purely speculation/me just reading into things too much. I'm also not an expert on any of this by any means and my source is mainly Wikipedia.
イクス・ネーヴェ (Ickx Neve/Ix Nieves) "Neve" is Gaelic/Irish. It's a spelling of "Niamh," who was a queen of Tir Na Nog. The name itself means "bright" or "radiant." ミリーナ・ヴァイス (Mileena Weiss) "Mileena" is Czech, and is a popular name in Italy. It means "love," "warmth" and "grace." "Weiss" is German, and means "white." It sometimes refers to people of light perplexion/blond hair, and in Old High German also means "bright" or "shining."
カーリャ・ネヴァン(Karya/Karia Nevan/Neamhain) "Karia" is English. It means "pure" or "chaste." "Nemain" is Irish. It refers to a goddess associated with war and one of the sisters of the Morrigan in Irish mythology. It's pronounced "Nevan," and the modern spelling of this is "Neamhain." コーキス (Kocis) "Kocis" is Hungarian, and refers to a coach/driver of a carriage. It's derived from "Kocsis." マーク・グランプ (Mark Grump/Marcus Grimm) "Mart-kos" is Latin, and refers to someone related to war. Both Mark and Marcus are derived from this, though Marcus refers more to Roman lore and relates to the god Mars. "Grimm" is Germanic, coming from Old Norse. It means "a person wearing a mask." It's derives from "grima/grimr." ロウズ・アウトソロウ (Garows Outsorrow/Gareth Outrigger) "Gareth" is Welsh/English. It possibly stems from gwaredd, which means "gentleness." An outrigger refers to the "legs" of a ship that are pulled out to stabilize the structure. ゲフィオン (Gefion) "Gefjon" is a Norse goddess associated with ploughing and once took residence in Odense. Gefion is an alternate spelling of this. デミトリアス (Demitrius) "Demetrius" is Greek, and refers to someone who worships Demeter, the goddess of harvest and sacred law. フィリップ・ビクエ・レストン (Biqe Phillip Reston) "Philip" is Greek, refering to someone who loves horses, and "Reston" is English. Phillip's nickname, "Phil," is likely a reference to "Fir Bolg," a group of people from medieval Ireland. They were overthrown by the Tuatha De Danann, led by Nuada. ファントム (Phantom) AKA リーパ (Reaper) A phantom is a ghost, shadow, or figment of one's imagination. Going along with this, "reaper" likely references the Grim Reaper rather than someone who harvests crops. [フィリップ]ジュニア ([Phillip] Junior) A younger Phillip. :) メルクリア (Mercuria) "Mercuria" might be a reference to "Mercury," the Roman god of finances, communication, travelers, trickery and luck, and who served to guide souls to the underworld. "Mercurius" is Latin for "Mercury." Could potentially be a pun on the word "mercurial," referring to Mercuria's moodswings. ナーザ (Nuadha) AKA ウォーデン・ロート・ニーベルング (Woden Rot Nibelung) "Nuadha" is Irish, and refers to the king of the Tuatha De Danann, Nuada Airgetlam. His surname means "silver arm," and he is known for losing his arm in a war (in which he opposed the Fir Bolg for the island of Ireland) and later has it replaced with a metal one after being removed from his throne. Nuadha can be pronounced "nuaza," which is similar to his Japanese name. "Woden" is the Old English spelling of "Odin," a god from Norse Mythology. He was someone who knew what Gefjon was capable of, and was the one who sent her away from Odense. He is frequently associated with the god Mercury. His middle name is potentially "Roth," which can refer to German warriors spilling blood, or derives from the ancient Danish word "roe" to signify kings. "Nibelung" (spelled "Niflung" in Old Norse) refers to a clan from Germanic legend associated with kingdoms. In Norse mythology, "Nibelungs" dwelled in the northern kingdom ruled by Giuki. セシリィ (Cecily) "Cecily" is Latin. It comes from "Cecilia," which means "blind." バルド (Baldr) "Baldr" is a god from Norse mythology, and was a son of Odin. He was destined to be brought back to life after death. チーグル (Sigurd) AKA トルステン・ドンナー (Thorsten Donner) "Sigurd" is a mythological Germanic hero whose tale is told in "The Ring of Nibelung," and he's associated with Nibelungenlied. "Thorsten" is Scandinavian, and is compound for "Thor," a Greek god, and "sten" which means "stone." "Donner" is a Germanic version of "Thor." The name appears in "The Ring of Nibelung." シドニー・ミラー (Sidney Mirror) "Sidney" is a common English name, possibly associated with the Latin "Sidonia," meaning "linen." ローゲ (Loge) "Loge" is a Germanic name for "Loki," a god from Norse mythology known for mischief, who instigated Baldr's death and made enemies with Gefjon despite Odin's warnings. The name appears in "The Ring of Nibelung." グラスティン・ライサンダー (Glastein/Glastian Lysander) "Glastian" is the name of a Scottish saint. "Lysander" is a Greek name, which means "liberator." ヨーランド・ビクエ・オーデンセ (Biqe Yalanda Odanse) "Odense" comes from Norse legend, and means "Odin's sanctuary." It once got burned down by Abel of Denmark and had to be rebuilt. ダーナ (Dana) "Dana" comes from Tuatha De Danann, which was a race consisting of deities in Irish mythology who dwelled in the Otherworld. The Morrigan and Nuada were members, who were frequently depicted as kings and queens. エルダ (Erda) "Erda" is a Germanic name for "Uror," a Norn from Norse mythology who decided the fates of people. She resided with the other Norns beneath the Yggdrasil tree in Asgard. The name appears in "The Ring of Nibelung."
