OK SO I HAVE SO MANY REASONS BUT HERES MY MAIN POINTS FOR THIS THEORY

Ok so like,, hes described as fem, “eyes bright as a lady” “pretty” even in the script he’s described as having fem features mainly his face and eyes

Throughout the whole movie he goes out of his way to call himself a man, even stuff that u don’t need to specify ur gender he still does it like he’ll constantly say “I’m just like any man ___” “I’m a man __” “like other men I ___” like he REALLY wants wake to know he’s a man

He also gets called dog and I feel like this one is a bit of a stretch but I see it as trans ppl being seen as nonhuman, he got called dog all the time by the og winslow and when wake does it it REALLY triggers ephraim.

[theory but probably canon] we see the og winslow for like 5 seconds but he looks a LITTLE too much like winslow, I think that Winslow changed his appearance to look more like him, cutting his hair and growing a stache, speaking of facial hair, he has very patchy stubble, he can barley grow a beard.

When he gets angry his voice gets noticeably higher, he probably forces his voice tbh

And the MAJOR scene, when he’s sitting with wake and he says that he wants to be called winslow is so fucking trans like he says “ephraim winslow. I’d prefer it if you’d call me by my name” and he says it super hesitantly, almost embarrassed about it. Wake laughs a bit at him and says it doesn’t matter to him what name he wants to go by and calls him it. He calls him lad a few times and winlsow is visibly upset and just says “*winslow.*” and there are some lines where wake will pause and correct himself

The scene where winslow spilled his beans and he said “my real name is Thomas, tommy.” “I trust you wake.” It was almost like he was giving him his dead name, because he trusted him with it.

also his whole thing is about identity, Winslow running from his past trying to start a new life only for his old one to haunt him. The lighthouse was just Winslow’s dysphoric breakdown /j
