Prompt if you’re interested: “You licked the Liberty Bell when you were a kid? And you’ve been kissing me with that mouth?” 🔔
send me holiday prompts and I might do them x
"Are you kidding? El Paso is like eight hours from San Antonio," Eddie said as Chim looked back at him goading from the couch to their right. "I went to the Alamo one time, everyone always seems to think I just took a visit every other month."
They sat in Chim and Maddie's living room after dinner, the two of them sat side by side on the one couch while Eddie sat on the edge of the other with Buck squeezed up beside him. He always joked that Buck didn't have any sense of personal space, especially when it came to him, but truthfully he enjoyed having his boyfriend pressed up against him or slowly (and absolutely unsubtly) shuffling closer so their thighs would brush or Eddie would be forced to lift an arm up over his shoulder so he could fit under it.
Right now he had it rested on the back of the couch and behind him, his thumb silently and secretly brushing the back of Buck's arm, the other was resting on the edge of the couch and holding a beer.
They tried to have dinner at least once every month, sooner if they could manage, but they never did. Not now that Maddie and Chim had a second kid anyway.
"Bet you never forgot it either," Chim grinned while Maddie rolled her eyes and hid her smile behind her glass of wine and Buck snorted far to close to Eddie's ear.
"I don't know how you live with him Maddie," Buck shook his head but couldn't hide the giant smile that crossed his features.
"He probably thinks we spent our weekends hiking on down to the Washington Monument too," Maddie teased, making Chim eye her with betrayal as she sided with Eddie and her brother, giving him a playful look.
It made Buck laugh even harder and Eddie held tighter to his beer so he wouldn't drop it as Buck's movements jostled him all the same. He locked eyes with Maddie who gave him a sympathetic smile, but had so much adoration in her eyes as she looked back to Buck that it made Eddie's chest feel warm.
"Isn't that what normal families do?" Chim asked. "Go see the historical sights? God knows my father never took us anywhere."
Eddie's turn to snort.
"Are you implying that any of us had a normal family growing up?" he raised an eyebrow.
Chim opened his mouth to protest but instead just nodded, holding his beer out towards Eddie's who let them come together with a little 'clink'.
"Ain't that the truth," Chim agreed before taking a sip.
read on ao3, or;
"Fun fact, our parents once took us to the Liberty Bell because they thought we'd never seen it. They'd actually taken us two years before that and forgotten," Buck leant forward as he spoke, making Eddie sit back into the couch even further to give him the room.
"I remember that," Maddie let out a breathy chuckle. "You spent the whole drive telling them that while they told you that you must have gone on a field trip there."
"Then they were so pissed by the time we got there that they just went for coffee and told us to go read the plaques and come back when we were hungry," he grinned, turning to Eddie who was just watching him with a gentle fondness in his eyes before pointing an accusatory finger towards Maddie. "And you dared me to lick the thing. Got to say, it tasted exactly like you'd think it would."
"Why would you lick the Liberty Bell?" Chim shook his head. "It's got lead in it."
"It's seventy percent copper, I read it on the signs," Buck shrugged. "And I turned out fine."
"Debatable," Chim mumbled into the mouth of his beer bottle.
"Hold on a minute," Eddie raised a brow at him and crinkled his nose. "You've licked the liberty bell and you've been kissing me with that mouth?"
"I mean, I have brushed my teeth once or twice since then," Buck shrugged, looking back to Eddie with a curl on his lips as he took a sip of beer.
"And in my defence, I didn't think you'd do it," Maddie said, giving an almost identical shrug of her shoulders before taking a long sip of her wine.
"Was he different as a child?" Chim asked, eyeing Buck with confusion. "Last week I told him he couldn't fit two cupcakes in his mouth and he nearly choked on four, just to prove a point."
"You're supposed to eat cupcakes," Maddie shook her head at both Chim and Buck. "You're not supposed to lick two hundred year old bells."
"Yeah that's just... gross," Chim shuddered, looking to Eddie. "And you choose to kiss that mouth. Willingly."
"Don't remind me," Eddie teased, not able to hide the smirk on his lips as he and Chim grinned at one another and Buck's eyes snapped to him.
He knew the expression without even needing to look over. But he never quite new what was going to come out of Buck's mouth.
"What? I've licked worse things than the liberty bell," he said.
A cacophony of collective groans rang out in the room as Buck smirked, and Eddie felt his cheeks turning pink as he closed his eyes and shook his head.
"Please stop," he said quietly, turning his head to see Buck giving him a perfectly innocent look in return.
"I didn't specify what those things were," he leant in and murmured in Eddie's ear.
Eddie nudged him in the hip with his own as he gave him a scolding look, letting the hand at the back of the couch slide up over his arm and cup the other side of his face to pull it in close.
"Yeah, yeah," he said with a rough kiss to his temple.
"I'm going to need another glass after that," Maddie got to her feet and gave them both an expectant look. "You guys want another one?"
"I'm good, I'm driving," Eddie said.
Buck just held out his empty bottle with a smile and Maddie took it from him with her own scolding glance.
"I'll give you a hand," Chim got up with a grunt and the two headed off into the kitchen.
"Seeing as we're talking about licking things," Buck mumbled once the two were out of earshot, sliding his hand over Eddie's ribs and nuzzling his nose against his neck.
Even though Chim and Maddie were too far to hear him, Eddie still felt his skin flush and let his fingers pinch at Buck's ear and pull him back with a whiny 'ahh' sound.
"Down boy," he said quietly. "Your sister is in the next room."
"Okay but when we get home..." he trailed of and gave Eddie a suggestive eyebrow raise.
Eddie sighed, shaking his head and leaning in so that his lips were brushing against Buck's ear as he lowered his voice to be barely audible.
"When we get home, I'll give you something better to lick than the damn liberty bell."
He gave Buck's lips a lingering look before he was meeting his eyes again. Eyes that surged with heat for a moment before he was sitting back with a devilish gleam in them instead.
"That's highly inappropriate Eddie," he said, much louder so that his voice would travel to the kitchen. "You'll let me lick what?"
Eddie felt the flush spread and his ears burned hot as he glared back at Buck.
"I hate you," he said, met with an angelic grin from Buck.
"You don't, you love me really."
Eddie sighed, but who the hell was he to deny it?
"Yeah, I guess I do."

Day 6 in Chile: wine tasting tour
A guide took us to 3 different wineries in the Casablanca and San Antonio valleys, and we tasted some nice wines and ate an abundant and delicious lunch at one of the wineries.
It was raining when we left, but it started clearing up at the second winery, and it was beautiful by mid-afternoon when we ate lunch. We had a good view of lawns and a pond from our table, and I spotted a couple of new birds (a grey-hooded Sierra finch, which is mostly yellow!, and my fourth kind of cinclodes: dark-bellied) in addition to several birds we'd seen before. But I definitely overate at lunch and felt a bit uncomfortable afterwards.
However, I think I have a bit of post-nasal drip. It isn't a sore throat (yet?), but my throat feels congested and I have a little of the nausea that sometimes comes with that. That is... not ideal. The conference starts Sunday night and my talk is on Monday. Plus we have to move to the conference hotel tomorrow.

A Little Catch Up on My Life and Travels
My last post was about selling our beloved place in Mexico. I haven't posted since then, but I've been busy, both with closing down the business, and then taking to the road.
I'm writing this from a hotel room in San Antonio, Texas. We have just finished a 5 day vacation with family, and my husband and his brother attended 3 days of the Formula One in Austin. They are very close to each other, and I think they enjoyed everything about their 3 days together. My sister in law and I are also close, and we enjoyed hanging out: there was a day of walking and checking out the River Walk, and a couple of days of relaxing and reading, (things we both enjoy).
Today we parted ways, with my BIL and SIL returning home and Craig and I staying one more night then flying onward to Mexico to meet up with my dad and a friend. We are headed to the town where we have spent 16 happy years, but this time we're not staying at our own place. Instead we are staying with our former property manager who also has rental apartments. While we will be doing many fun things with our local friends, we will NO be painting or fixing things, (a staple of our previous trips). It will be a different trip for sure.
However, I started my travels the last week of August, when my sister invited me to accompany her and my niece back to Ontario, (where my niece attends university). While I've passed through Toronto, both just within the airport, and by vehicle, I've never actually spent any time there, so I jumped at the opportunity. It was a fun and busy 5 days, sightseeing, catching a Blue Jays baseball game, and touring the infamous Kingston penitentiary, as well as getting my niece settled into her new house.
In between the two above trips, we took our travel trailer down the Washington and Oregon coasts, before cutting into more central California to Yosemite National parks. We stayed at both National Parks and State Parks, and boy to do I have a lot to say about those...however, that will be in another post. We had two nights in the San Francisco Bay area, staying in fabulous new regional park in the East Bay, where we spend an unexpected $900+USD when the water pump, followed by the serpentine belt gave out in our truck! Fortunately, we were in a big centre with lots of access to mechanics and parts!
We picked up friends who arrived from Scotland and together the 4 of us made our way back to Canada, via wine tastings and microbreweries!
We loved catching up with family en route, and it was fun to play tour guide to our Scottish friends! We took them out to my favourite place in the world, (the west coast of Vancouver Island), as well as visiting the famous Butchart Gardens, (in the POURING rain), finishing with 2 nights in Vancouver.
So...I've definitely not been lollygagging or wallowing in sorrow over the sale of our place, although when I see it tomorrow evening for the first time since the sale, I may have a wee wallow. Until next time...

Querciabella 2018 Chianti Classico
First sniff and taste suggest a serious Chianti Classico by annata's standards. Not as overt as the ’15 at similar stage: the mood is reticent, its fruit darker, the accent earthier. Black cherry, blackberry, violet and sweet tobacco fill the senses on top of oaky clues such as cedar and coffee, with plush fruit very much clad in soil and leather. Riserva-grade presence and structure here. Tense, austere despite plenty of air time, this has yet to find its red fruit voice should it follow the same trajectory as ’15. — ★★★
Appellation: Chianti Classico Region: Chianti, Toscana, Italy Subzone: Greve, Radda and Gaiole Cépage: 100% Sangiovese Abv: 14.5% Production: 180,000 Élevage: 12 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux (10% new), 3 in bottle Distributor: Asiaeuro
Critic Reviews:
The 2018 Chianti Classico is classy, polished and exceptionally beautiful. Like so many wines in 2018, the Chianti Classico is aromatic and gracious in feel, more finesse than power. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright Sangiovese fruit. From start to finish, the 2018 is all class. Drink: 2022–2033. Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 09/2020) 93
Querciabella Chianti Classico 2018 is fine and expressive on the nose: really focused cherry and plum fruit with fine green notes and lovely aromas. The palate is supremely fresh and balanced with lovely focus to the fresh, elegant red berry fruits, as well as nice herby, slightly spicy complexity. Really bright and expressive. Jamie Goode (Wineanorak.com) 95
This red shows some depth to the black cherry, black currant, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. There is a hint of tar, and the firm structure is well-integrated. Drink now through 2032. Bruce Sanderson (Wine Spectator, 06/2021) 90
Luscious, juicy fruit on the palate and silky tannins that make their mark. Beautiful balance and elegant and concentrated at the same time. Amazing length and focus. Walter Speller (Jancis Robinson) 17.5
Sweet wood nuances lead with cinnamon, clove and a touch of vanilla eventually ceding to wild cherry and wet soil. On the palate, forest berries are laced with chocolate. The fruit is concentrated and plush with ripe, powdery tannins giving effortless support. This is its usual sophisticated and polished self, with lots of juiciness. Yields are a low 30 hl/ha and ageing is in a combination of French oak tonneaux and barriques, 10% new. Give this another year for the wood to integrate. Michaela Morris (Decanter, 03/2021) 91
This wine combines fruit from high-elevation vineyards on three soil types (predominantly sandstone, galestro and limestone) to give flavors of pure red cherry laced with soft notes of tobacco and herbs. Scents of pink petals add lift, and the wine stays integrated through a fresh, vibrant finish. Stephanie Johnson (Wine & Spirits, 04/2021) 92
Remains 100 per cent sangiovese, as it has been since 2012, as a three-commune collection; Ruffoli in Greve (40 per cent), on the Volpaia side and across the valley to Radda (20) and San Polo in Rosso from Gaiole (20), across the ravine from Ama. The totality of the Gaiole fruit is raised on Alberese, the Radda in schisty Galestro and Ruffoli, well Ruffoli is really about elevation. A no extremities vintage following a very cold winter and no climate spikes save for the early August heat. The Querciabella richness is foiled but also optimized by a three-part mineral harmony that does not so much cut but adds three district notes to the wine. The epiphany may or not begin with this 2018 but the textural perception has undergone a transformational alteration, now in defence against the drying effect of sangiovese’s tannin. The winemaking team has moved forward from the experimental stage into a full-on working contract with Piedmontese cappello sommerso, keeping the cap submerged for extended periods (up to 45 days). The high elevation fruit is particularly promising, forging true connectivity with the process. You get it completely, intuit the polish and this Annata just melts straight into inherit structure, again with thanks for a portion that has settled early. The wheel is constantly turning for Querciabella’s wines. Stupendo. Drink 2022-2032. Michael Godel (Wine Align, 05/2021) 94

Grape Escape: Exploring Texas Wineries with Convenient Transportation
Introduction
Texas may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about wine regions, but the state boasts a thriving wine industry with numerous wineries producing award-winning wines. From the picturesque Hill Country to the sprawling vineyards of the Texas High Plains, there are plenty of opportunities for wine enthusiasts to explore. However, navigating these wine regions can be challenging without proper transportation. This guide aims to provide insights into convenient transportation options for exploring Texas Winery Tours transportation, ensuring a memorable and hassle-free wine-tasting experience.
Wine Regions in Texas
Before delving into transportation options, it's essential to understand the diverse wine regions that Texas has to offer. The Texas Hill Country, located just west of Austin and north of San Antonio, is one of the state's most popular wine destinations. Known for its scenic landscapes, rolling hills, and charming small towns, the Hill Country is home to numerous wineries producing a variety of wines, including Tempranillo, Viognier, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Another prominent wine region in Texas is the Texas High Plains, located in the northwest part of the state. This region benefits from high elevation and a dry climate, making it well-suited for grape cultivation. The Texas High Plains produce a significant portion of the state's wine grapes, particularly varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec.
Convenient Transportation Options
Exploring Texas wineries requires reliable transportation to navigate between vineyards and tasting rooms. Fortunately, several convenient transportation options cater to wine enthusiasts looking to embark on a grape escape in the Lone Star State.
Wine Tours
One of the most convenient ways to explore Texas wineries is by joining a wine tour. Many tour operators in the Hill Country and Texas High Plains offer guided wine tours, providing transportation between wineries and knowledgeable guides who offer insights into the region's winemaking process and history. Wine tours typically include visits to multiple wineries, tastings, and sometimes even lunch or dinner options, allowing participants to sample a variety of wines while leaving the driving to the experts.
Private Transportation Services
For those seeking a more personalized wine-tasting experience, private transportation services offer a flexible and convenient option. Many companies in Texas specialize in providing chauffeured transportation for wine tours, allowing groups to customize their itinerary and explore wineries at their own pace. Whether it's a luxury sedan, SUV, or limousine, private transportation services can accommodate groups of various sizes and preferences, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free wine-tasting experience.
Renting a Car
For independent travelers who prefer to chart their own course, renting a car provides the flexibility to explore Texas wineries at their leisure. Renting a car allows travelers to create their own itinerary, visit wineries off the beaten path, and take in the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside. With several rental car agencies operating in major cities like Austin, San Antonio, and Lubbock, obtaining a vehicle for a wine-tasting excursion is both convenient and accessible.
Public Transportation
While public transportation options may be limited in rural wine regions, some wineries in the Texas Hill Country are accessible via public transportation from major cities like Austin and San Antonio. Additionally, some wine tour operators offer shuttle services from designated pickup locations in urban centers to wineries in the surrounding area. While public transportation may not provide as much flexibility as other options, it can be a cost-effective way to visit wineries for travelers without access to a private vehicle.
Conclusion
Exploring Texas wineries offers a delightful opportunity to discover the state's burgeoning wine scene and enjoy the hospitality of local vineyards. Whether you're touring the picturesque landscapes of the Hill Country or exploring the vast vineyards of the Texas High Plains, convenient transportation options are available to enhance your wine-tasting experience. Whether you opt for a guided wine tour, private transportation service, rental car, or public transportation, planning ahead and selecting the right transportation option can ensure a memorable and enjoyable grape escape in the Lone Star State.
