Meet Leanto, the harmless cult leader
I live like a king. My castle is a modest house and my kingdom a square of land not much larger than the house. I chuckle in spite of myself at the thought of the blades of grass representing my loyal subjects. I let my mind wander further as the calm of my sketching washes over me. My hand curves and drags the charcoal against the textured paper; the first step in materializing what currently exists only in my mind. The subjects are what they are, but the kingdom is mine and mine alone.
The one fallacy in my kingly imaginings is in the nature of the word. Kings are fallible. Human. Weak. By no means do I seek to grasp the false power a king possesses. Power resides not within the confines of mortal bodies. It flows much deeper than that. It has always been laughable to me that a person with fragile skin and bones could be so arrogant as to call himself King.
I run my charcoal-stained hand through my hanging hair and squint at the drawing. It’s not my best work, but it is getting better. I add it to the pile of drawings just like it. Plans for my group, the Concordian Society, that will stand tall one day to appease our Gods. The pounding of hooves sends a jolt through my body and interrupts my thoughts. Wonderful. The Big Hill Brigade must be here to dutifully deliver another royal announcement. As I slide my charcoal back into its bag I can’t help but wonder what the ever so exciting news could be. Perhaps the young princes aced their exams. Or maybe the princess wants to alert everyone of the color of her new dress. I chide myself to be less cynical. I guess some days are more challenging than others.
I push my feet into my torn slippers and trudge outside. I squint at the morning light that wriggles its way past my eyelids. A small group has gathered, as it is law to be present upon the arrival of castle guards. Yet another amusing thought. Who’s to say I’m not home when the guardsmen come through? Would they hold the town in anticipation while they peek through the windows of every home?
“Gather close, for this is important news to share.” The uppity man’s voice boomed. I eye his horse and the way it looks like this is the absolute last place it wants to be.
“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the closing of the castle walls.” The second guard said. His statement sparked a light murmur among us, although it isn’t like this is exactly new information. The Wardviel’s hardly show their faces in Yolksford, let alone in a grimey town like mine. The only time any of them interact with the common folk is when a handful of us are so graciously picked to feast at the palace for Visitation. I look on, anticipating what exactly makes this news so heavy-hearted.
“The palace asks that you take care to find this fugitive,” the first man continues, holding up a wanted poster. Through the sea of heads, I could not make out the face. Yet shocked faces before me keep my interest piqued. The murmurs escalate to conversations I perk my ears up for.
One man shouts at the guards, “Hey, why don’t you tell us what’s going on?” The question gets no response. The guards continue dispersing posters for those of us standing in the back. One of the men’s horses trots my way and the guardsman leans down to give me a copy of the drawing.
I can’t help but smile at the incredible turn of events today. Below the large letters forming “WANTED” was the name Culpa Wardviel. The fucking princess. The future queen-to-be. I grasp the paper and run back inside my house. Allowing my eyes to wander to the reward, I catch my breath in my throat. 24,000 gold. It was more than I had ever seen in my life. Let’s face it; more than I will ever see.
Seeing as the commotion is over, I excuse myself to my home. My pulse is rushing. I scramble to find a nail and my hammer. I don’t have time for this. I sweep my drawings off the table, not really caring about the clunk as my pencils hit the ground. I have more important matters at hand. I turn and grip the thick rope, urging my weak arms to pull. I run outside to make sure I raised the right flag. I always mistake the red flag’s rope for the blue one. I should probably paint the rope, that would be a good way to solve it. No time for that now though. Squinting into the sun, I see the little old reliable red flag, alerting my allies of this momentous moment.
I’ve only raised it twice before. The first was when I thought I saw a spirit guiding me toward them, asking for help in returning their soul to the waking world. Once my allies arrived, we investigated with a lantern and realized the spirit was no more than a linen caught on a branch. I didn’t live that one down for months. The second flag raise is not a memory I often return to.
Before I am able to make it back through the door, I hear a familiar voice.
“Leanto! Leanto, do the stars above spell our names?”
I chuckle at my best and oldest friend, Gregory (probably not his name but it doesn’t really matter) He, being the more charismatic and excitable of us, jumps in the air and spins toward a woman walking with her daughter. He grabbed the young girl’s hand and gave her a brief twirl. I cackle as the woman rips her daughter away from Gregory and knocks him on the head with her bundle of flowers.
“Gregory Aburta! Your mother taught you better than to be so cheerful on this day of sorrow!” “My apologies, madame,” Greg feigns sweeping an imaginary longcoat behind him and leans toward the woman’s hand in a grand gesture of a kiss. She blushes and steps away with a pep in her toes. Gregory, standing half a head above me in height, and sporting bright blue eyes has always given him a certain confidence about interacting with women.
I hiss Greg’s name and call him over. There are more important matters to get to this morning. Standing in my kitchen doubling as a meeting room, I pull the newfound treasure of a wanted poster from my trousers and slowly unfold it toward Gregory. We stare at each other. Our mouths can no longer hold in the smiles we’ve contained. The two of us, grown men I might add, scream in joy and our bodies float around my home. My ceiling is a bit too low for Greg’s height, so his jumping is more muted than he’d like.
“Greg stop, they’re arriving.” I pull him back into reality and straighten my stained shirt and belt.
Gregory stands watch at the front door with a solemn look replacing his wide grin. I take my place standing at the wood column across from the kitchen table. Tucking my arms behind my back, I wait for the visitors to enter. As a stream of young men make their way through the doorway, I nod at each of them. After a few moments, five stand at my table. Greg takes the last spot, and extends his arms toward me.
“Our valiant leader, Leanto of the Western Sea!” Gregory’s hands move to form our group’s symbol; the left hand facing his own face, and the other facing mine, with the two meeting at the fingertips. The rest of the men follow suit.
I clear my throat. “Fellow Concordians, we gather here today to discuss an important development.” My statement is met with a few grunts and eager nods. “As we all know, the palace bestowed a very interesting bit of information on us this morning.”
Gregory slammed the wanted poster onto the tabletop.
“Do we know what became of the queen?” A man named Samuel spoke up.
“I heard the princes and princess all killed her.” Piped Mikael. “No, you muddle-brain. It was the cook. She poisoned the Queen’s meal.” Said Chester.
“We here have no room in our minds for such trivial matters,” I definitively chided. “What is important is that we find the traitor princess. We will return her to her blasphemous parents, and become richer than any of us could dream.” I signal for Gregory to take his turn.
“Finding the princess will not only fund an official Concordian building to call our own. It will also get our name on the map. Endorsement and thanks from the false King will give us the opportunity to find more members.” Greg says, scanning the room for approval.
“Then, we will truly begin our journey to defeat the fuckers in the name of our Gods.” I feel my blood boil from anticipation.
Gregory stands and throws his fists in the air. “Down with the false gods!”
The men all stand and join in, chanting. I look around the table and meet the eyes of each of my members. One of them is a farmhand. Another, an apprentice for a teacher. We do not look like much. None of us have been blessed by the spirits with the powers of Life nor Death. Yet we all speak the truth in the name of true harmony. Of peace for all the land. The royal family is the only hurdle standing in our way. So I have no choice but to pave the road myself. I raise my fist among my men. Down with the false gods.

MOBILE RV REPAIR SERVICE IN IOWA CITY IOWA CITY MOBILE RV REPAIR
Everything You Need to Know About Mobile RV Repair Services Mobile RV Repair Service near Iowa City: One thing we love about RVs is the fact that most repairs can be made quickly and easily by the owner. That said, there are times when you might need a little help with a repair. When these bigger issues arise, many people take their RV into the shop to be fixed. However, some people prefer to turn to mobile RV repair. Wondering what mobile RV repair is, and if it might be a good option for you? This article covers the ins and outs of RV mobile repair, so you can decide with confidence whether or not this is the route you want to take next time your rig is in need of some TLC.
What is a Mobile RV Repair Service? As you might imagine, mobile RV repair service is a type of repair service that comes to you. This might mean that a mobile RV tech visits you in your campground or at your home. In some cases, people choose this service out of necessity because they can’t move the RV due to damage. However, more often than not, a mobile RV mechanic is called out because it is the most convenient option.
Types of Mobile RV Repair Services Many people seem to believe that a mobile RV mechanic is one size fits all. However, this is not actually the case. In fact there are a total of three different types of mobile RV repair service. 1: RV Dealer or Repair Shop House Calls Some RV dealerships and repair shops will make house calls on request. This is typically done only on an emergency basis, and you will likely pay a huge sum to have a tech from one of these places visit you. For this reason, we don’t recommend going this route if it can be helped. 2: Mobile RV Repair Specialists There are some repair techs out there who specialize in a certain type of repair. These specialists often work out of their trucks, and if not that, they tend to be more willing to visit customers due to having a niche customer base. That said, because these repair people are specialists, you can also expect to pay well for their services. 3: General RV Repair Techs Finally, there is the general mobile RV tech. This guy tends to be a jack of all trades, with a bit of experience fixing pretty much everything that can go wrong on an RV. They rarely have a shop to work out of, meaning mobile work is all they do. In most instances, this is the person you want to call in when you want mobile repair work done.
Getting Parts for Mobile RV Repair Mobile RV Repair Service near Iowa City: Unfortunately, because the general mobile tech (option #3) tends to work from his or her truck, you can’t expect them to have every RV part you could possibly need on hand. This means the parts might need to be ordered online or picked up at a local store. In some cases, the tech has connections and is able to get a bit of a discount, making it beneficial to order through them. That said, it often works just as well for you to order or pick up the needed items yourself. You might find that it’s best to talk to the repair person beforehand to find out what you should order, and have it ready to go when they arrive. This will save everyone time and will likely save you some money.
Benefits of a Mobile RV Repair Service Mobile RV Repair Service near Iowa City: The obvious benefit to hiring a mobile RV tech is the fact that you don’t have to move your RV at all. If you’re already all set up at your favorite campground, there is no need for you to unplug and hitch up to have repairs done. Likewise, if your RV is sitting in your yard, calling in a mobile tech removes the need to drive the rig into a shop. Finally, there is the chance that you are unable to move the RV at all. In these cases, this benefit is not just convenient, it’s necessary. Another awesome benefit of choosing an RV repair service that comes to you is the fact that the work can be done in your yard, meaning you may not even have to take off work to get it done. We also appreciate knowing the tech will be focused only on your rig while he or she is at your home or on your site. This means mistakes are less likely to be made due to distraction, and you know you are paying for hours spent focused purely on your RV. Other mobile RV repair services include: ● Window blind and shade repair ● Carpet replacement ● Oil & filter changes ● RV detailing (wash & wax) ● Holding tank clean-out
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Mobile RV Repair Service near Iowa City: In an effort to always provide the highest level of service to our customers, we try to anticipate our customers’ needs in order to be proactive in our service and care. That being said, it’s not out of the ordinary for customers to have questions about our RV services, and so we’ve compiled a list of the questions frequently asked.
How often should I have my RV serviced?
This typically depends on how often you use your RV. If you’re a full-time RV enthusiast, you’re going to want to have certain systems, including your air conditioning and furnace looked at and cleaned at least once a year. You should also have your brakes checked and bearings repacked once a year, or every 10,000 miles whichever comes first. If you’re living in your RV at a park full-time, just make sure you get your brakes and bearings checked and serviced before you set out on the road again. Bearing grease will break down over time, and brake parts will rust-up, so it’s best to be proactive.
There are other items to check routinely, including your RV’s roof and exterior wall sealants, overall roof condition, jack systems, and any other systems that you frequently use. These need to be checked or operated and lubricated every six months or so in order to ensure that they’re functional and keeping the elements out of water is an RV’s WORST enemy!
What RV types do you work on?
Yours! We may not cover every system you have, some motorhomes are more complex than a 747 but we can repair most of it! We’ll be upfront and honest with you about which parts and systems we’ll be able to work on before we begin. We’re not going to waste your time or take any chance of damaging your RV or our reputation by taking on a project that we can’t handle.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Cash, check, Bitcoin, or credit card. I have even worked for food. It was worth it!
What RV manufacturers do you specialize in?
For the most part, all manufacturers build their RVs in a similar way, which makes RV service and repair fairly straightforward for any model. The same systems that are in a Forest River are also in a Highland Ridge or a Coachmen; the RV manufacturer doesn’t matter all that much, and we can repair them all.
What is the turnaround time for repairs?
Our turnaround time depends on several factors, including:
● The extent of the repairs ● The availability of the required parts (if we don’t have them in stock) ● The amount of jobs already in progress or scheduled
Normally, we can get to your RV to at least diagnose the problem within the week you call. We work with all of our customers to ensure timely and efficient service.

May 9 Cemaes Bay
Another rainy start to the day but it was supposed to get better so we set off in total raingear, but the rain mostly stopped after less than an hour. We stopped at the little church that Russ and I walked to last evening, and went inside. It is dedicated to St Patrick, who legend says shipwrecked beneath here and sheltered in a cave. There has been a church here since 440 AD, but this one has parts dating back to the 14th century and was renovated extensively in 1840 by the third Lord Stanley of Alderley. What's extraordinary is that he had married a Moorish woman from Spain and adopted her Muslim faith, so except for a painting of St Patrick, all the windows and other decorations are in colors and styles (abstract, Moorish) that reflect his adopted faith. It's a simple but lovely building.
Our path took us along the coast for about 4 miles, up and down headlands, before heading back inland toake a loop. In one of the little valleys are the remains of a porcelain clay factory, and a sheltered spot to stop for lunch at convenient picnic tables. It has a small natural harbor, and while we were there, a large group of sea kayakers landed and also had their lunch. They were smartly dressed in drysuits.
Further along, on the northernmost point in Wales is a ruined little summerhouse with commanding views. It shares the hill top with an iron age hill fort. Still further up the coast are the remains of an old brick factory. So much industry was here in the past, along with shipbuilding, and all that's left is tourism and agriculture. Not a lot for local kids to look forward to.
We hiked back through the fields and it doesn't take long to get into the lush forested paths. There aren't that many stands of trees out here, as almost everything is cliff or pasture, but without the grazing and plowing the woods would quickly return. The one exception is the decommissioned nuclear power plant just to the west of town - another employer that doesn't exist anymore. There were plans to replace it, but the costs kept increasing and the government balked at funding it. It is fenced off and forces the coast path inland to go around it.
We have loved our time here, though, and are sorry we didn't get to do more hikes, since this area has plenty more to offer. Tomorrow we're off to Chester, back in England, which has Roman walls and a lot of history. We'll be back on a regular train, and spend one more night with Shelley and Dave before they leave for Switzerland on Saturday. The Welsh people have been friendly and very helpful.

She fit into our group so well that I don’t even remember how we first met. We were all so young and naïve – all I wanted to do was sleep, play guitar, and spend my nights at the bar with my friends, playing pinball and smoking cigarettes until the bar owners shooed us away. We’d stay up late getting stoned and planning our next big adventure, even though we all knew we’d just spend the next night doing the same thing as the one before: all of us packed into Crack’s dorm room, sitting on milk crates playing poker and smoking until the air was so hazy I could barely see Big Muck’s goofy grin flashing at me from across our little circle. Sarah was Crack’s little sister, but so feisty and smart we often forgot who was oldest. We shared plenty of laughs, had serious talks and made memories that I’ve forgotten now, but I know I’ll always remember those blue eyes and the feeling that as long as they were focused on me, I was no longer a lost boy, but instead someone worthy, someone strong. A man.
We spent the summer after freshman year stomping through the woods. I taught her to fish and find deer tracks in soft mud. She taught me how to stop searching and start looking. Time slowed that summer as I watched life through her eyes – ants climbing on a log became an insect parade, tadpoles and frogs grumbling at the pond became a swampy orchestra, and every sunrise was a painter’s palette, poised to color each day anew. We sang songs around the campfire and broke into Little Al’s uncle’s bar to steal Bud Light and play pool until 3AM. We threw rocks into the river, night breezes whispering questions in my ear the first time I took her hand.
The carousel of color and sound that was the summer of ’78 came to a screeching halt the morning of August 14. Crack knocked on the door of my mother’s house and I bounded down the stairs, ready to hop in his pickup and head out to the fields for another morning of hunting small game. My heart froze when I saw his face. I watched his mouth moving, unable to comprehend what he was saying.
I ran.
I ran past the truck idling in the driveway, past Uncle Bill’s hayfield, past Mrs. T’s pink house at the end of the road, past the WAWA on Main Street. I didn’t stop until I stood outside room 304A, West Chester Hospital.
There she was. My sweet, sweet girl, always so strong and full of life, with a laugh that filled every room and a smile brighter than a thousand suns. That Sarah was gone, replaced by a small, fragile Sarah who lay on the white hospital bed, tubes encircling her body like the tangled arms of the forsythia bush that hid us from the rest of the world the afternoon we first kissed.
In a story that seemed unending I discovered that it was a drive to my house that ended our carefree summer. As the doctor spoke, I could picture it all: her long brown hair blowing around her face, all the windows down, music blaring, her cat eye sunglasses perched low on her nose… I bet it was some stupid Beatles song we hated playing on the radio that made her look down to turn the radio dial and –WHAM.
That car crash changed everything. Just like that, the sweet, heavy smell of moss after the rain was replaced by an ever-present haze of antiseptic and sanitizer. The chorus of birds chirping and squirrels chattering morphed into the beeping of machines punctuated by the constant drip, drip, drip of an IV, feeding life into Sarah’s feeble body. The gang came around, but instead of telling stories in a circle, eating peanuts and throwing shells on the floor and jamming to The Who, we sat and waited. None of them could look at one another, none of them could look at her. But she was all I could see.
The doctors were kind and helpful, always answering our questions and letting us stay until after visiting hours were over. But they didn’t know when she would wake up – if she would wake up.
Every night around 5 we would leave, one by one. Crack would go home to update his family on how Sarah was that day. Muck and little Al would head to work. Usually, I’d stay until the nurses kicked me out. One night there was a knock at the door. My mom’s head peeked into the room, looking for me even though she knew I wouldn’t be anywhere else. She walked into the room holding my black guitar case, set it down at my feet, and kissed me on the head. As I opened the case, I heard the door click shut. I pulled out my guitar, the familiar strings comforting me with a soft twang. I slowly picked out some chords until James Taylor’s Fire and Rain spilled from my fingers. I looked at Sarah, still as could be as her chest rose and fell with each shallow breath, and wondered if she would ever sing along with me again.
That night, I went home. I hiked up the hill behind my house into the woods, all the way to the spot where we had once howled at the moon like crazy dogs, yelling our frustrations and whispering our secrets. I’m not very religious but I believe there is a balance of things. I sat on the top of the hill for a long time, pleading with the stars to bring Sarah back and wishing the darkness would swallow me up.
I didn’t go back to the hospital for 3 days. On the fourth day, I went to room 304A. I took Sarah’s hand and told her stories. I recounted the time Crack and little Al almost set Cousin Teddy’s barn on fire. I told her about the morning we all went out to the swimming hole instead of taking our Econ final and Muck told us he wanted to be a chef instead of an accountant. I described the winter when I was 7 and got so lost in the snow that it took our dog, Lolli, 30 minutes to find me and bring be back home to a warm fire, hot chocolate from Mom, and a long lecture from Dad. The day went by quickly as I narrated story after story. I stood to leave with a heavy heart. As I pushed on the door, I heard a rustle. Sarah was awake.
The next few hours were a blur as nurses and doctors bustled around Sarah’s room. It seemed like forever before she was sitting up and talking. And with that, it quickly became clear that Sarah would never be the same.
The crash had caused major trauma to Sarah’s brain. The doctors said it was a miracle she had woken up. Her speech would never be the same; her thoughts came quickly but she couldn’t articulate them with the same speed. Her movements were slow and jerky. I could see her sadness and frustration even though she tried to hide it. Finally, she was allowed to go home. Her mom fussed over her, much to Sarah’s chagrin. Everyone was relieved she was safe, awake, and home. But no one could look her in the eye. We knew her life was changed forever.
One night, I came over with my guitar, just as I had hundreds of times before. As I opened the case, she slammed her small fist on the table. I’ve never heard anyone yell the way she did that night. She screamed and cried and wailed. “I don’t want you here!” she shrieked, and those words rang through my head over and over like the tolling of a clock at midnight. My time with Sarah was up.
Her mother called me on the phone the next day. “You’re the reason she woke up,” she said. “And I love you for that. But it’s the same reason she can’t stand you now. Her life is different; her independence is gone. She can’t be with you – with anyone. Let her go.”
So I did. I finished college, moved around, got a job. I locked up my guitar case. I sold my old pickup truck and traded in Bud Light for Jim Beam and milk crates for a dining room table that’s empty more
than not. I met a girl who’s stubborn as hell, spunky and opinionated, supportive and smart. Her smile doesn’t remind me of the sun and her eyes don’t twinkle like the stars in July. She doesn’t laugh much and she sings off-key. I asked her to marry me and she said no. I asked again and she said yes. We had a daughter and for the first time since the summer after my freshman year of college I felt whole again, like I had finally done something right. Like a new man.
I still see my friends once or twice a year at cook-outs and Christmas. One year, Sarah met my wife and they got along like old friends. She sang and played with my daughter. I wonder what it would have been like if things had gone differently. But my job, my home, my family are what they are. I try to appreciate that. I tell myself this is how it was meant to be.
I was sitting in my office when I got the phone call. My heart pounded in my chest. My face felt hot and my eyes stung with tears that wouldn’t fall.
Hearing Crack’s voice took me back all those years to the moment I stood in the doorway of my childhood home and learned about Sarah’s car crash. “Sarah’s dead.” Crack’s voice whispered through the phone. “She went for a walk this morning. She fell on some ice, hit her head. By the time she got to the hospital there was nothing they could do.”
My world stopped that day, but my life didn’t. I still go to work every morning; I still pick my daughter up from school every night. I still make dinner, do laundry, pay bills, call my parents. This time, it’s not a coma. This time it’s real. It’s permanent. It’s forever. This time, she’s not waking up.
It’s been 14 years since that call. There is a sadness in my heart that numbs me; it’s a hollow ache that weighs on me day and night, heavy enough to remind me of the pain but dull enough to let me go on, unable to be erased.
Sometimes, I see Sarah in my daughter – whether it’s really there or in my imagination, I can’t say. I think of Sarah when I hear her singing in the shower, when she comes home late with mud on her feet and flushed cheeks from running in the grass, when I take her out to practice driving and her wild hair flies around her face like a halo.
No music in the car, though, that’s my rule. Because even after all this time, the memories of 1978 are still too fresh.
“This story is about an instance when neither time nor circumstance could lessen the blow of being forced to move on and let go.”
- Aby Sobotka-Briner, University of Pittsburgh Senior

Replacing a Garage Door Window
Garage door windows are prone to get cracked at one time or another. The culprits range from children playing in the driveway to taking tools out to the garden but whacking the door window by accident. Either way replacing the pane is fairly easy but should be done as soon as possible because broken glass is a danger and rain may get in.
The first thing you should do is take measurements for the window and purchase it. A good idea is to buy something more durable like Plexiglas but make sure whatever you choose it's between 1/8th and 1/16th of an inch smaller than the frame. A good idea is to take a piece of the old glass to the store in order to acquire the same type if you don't want to go with something more resilient.
Next, compile the necessary tools: ladder, work gloves, several types of screw drivers including flat head, putty knife, pliers, and a rag. You may need some new nails or wood putty.
Steps:-
Put the door in the down position and secure any remote control. Alert the rest of the household not to use the door or simply disconnect the power chord to prevent it from opening altogether. That's the best option.
Standing inside and wearing work gloves, place the ladder near the broken window and pull out any lose glass.
How is the trim around the window on the door installed? Is it screwed in, nailed in, glued on? You may need a putty knife or a flat head screw driver to remove it and pliers to remove any stubborn nails. NOTE: Newer doors may have an easy snap on/off trim.
Clear any leftover glass out of the frame. If it is being held in place by a solvent you may need to carefully bang it out with a hammer.
Clean the frame with a rag or brush.
Place the new window flush against the frame. Apply some wood putty around the frame to help it stick.
Return the trim to the frame.
Caulk around window on the outside of the door to ensure it's sealed. You may also caulk on the inside.
After you're finished make sure to sweep the garage floor well to remove any fallen shards, nails or other debris that could be harmful to others or cause a flat tire.

Press Release:
The period television series Babylon Berlin takes place in the riotous Berlin of 1929 – a time when the city was reeling from the shameful fallout of the First World War and was, for perhaps the first time, a world capital of culture. The insidious rise of Nazism was already well underway, with Joseph Goebbels directing gangs of brown-shirted thugs to skirmish with communists and harass Jews. The National Socialist party had won 10 seats in the Reichstag the year prior. At the same time, the city’s three opera houses were packed. Artists and writers moved in, flocking to Berlin’s bars and cabarets. Lavish parties were thrown night after night. Cocaine consumption was at a pinnacle.
Babylon Berlin has been shot – at least in part – in the eponymous city, occasionally turning contemporary Berlin’s subway stations and street corners into historical reenactments. The stage dressings perfectly befit a city that has spent the past decade rebuilding the Stadtschloss. The original 18th Century palace was demolished in 1950 and replaced by the seat of the East German parliament – a building that was itself demolished in 2008 to make way for the new, old palace. Rather than housing kings or politicians, the new Stadtschloss will be home to an extensive collection of art and cultural artifacts when it opens in 2019. This process of historical resuscitation, modification and reclamation is already familiar in Berlin, the most notable example being the Reichstag, which sports a glass dome in an ostensible nod to openness and transparency of government. Notably, before its renovation, the entire building was swaddled in white fabric by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude: a kind of born-again christening.
Babylon Berlin’s extras occasionally mill around on the city’s streets, corralled by PAs and prop stylists. Men in Reichswehr uniforms, who would have been demoralized in 1929, fending off putsch attempts and working at the behest of an embattled government, now lounge around, looking somewhat unfamiliar with their rifles. A handful of soldiers are called over and given instructions by people who must be their commanding officers, although they really do not look the type with their neon trainers and fanny packs.
Berlin is once again a global cultural capital with an outsized reputation in the visual arts and music – famous nightclubs and a world-renowned symphony. The city is still home to three operas. Artists have again flocked here. And, once again, social and political dissatisfaction ferments below the veneer of opulence fueled by creativity. Lucie Stahl’s photographs of the cast and crew of Babylon Berlin loafing around between takes on the empty streets of Mitte don’t state this outright, but they certainly intimate.
Intimation, implication in lieu of explicitness, is a hallowed trait of art making – allowing artworks to avoid being too ‘duh’ as well as lending a plausible deniability that could help avoid inviting public outcry or censorship. This is a quality that happens to be shared by advertising, branding, public relations and politics – often for the same reasons. Much of Lucie Stahl’s work doubles this strategy, making a kind of cross-genre mise en abymein which the show-it-don’t-say-it approaches of branding and marketing are framed within an artwork, therefore demanding to be evaluated on exceptional terms. Arguably, when someone is looking at art they are much more willing to be thoughtful and investigative than when looking at a magazine ad.
In her most widely known series, Stahl uses a commercial scanner to build compositions of consumer objects, miniatures of quotidian things, clippings and advertising. Cobbled together and often held by a pair of clay or paint caked hands – as if dredged up from the swamp of pop culture runoff – each object or grouping thereof feels like a talismanic artifact from our short-term memories. Pressed right against the glass, the murky darkness around them threatens to swallow these objects back up if they weren’t somehow being lit from our vantage point as viewers. There are sleeves of Pringles, bags of Cheetos in increasing grades of sun faded-ness and different versions of the bucolic, salt-of-the-earth genre packaging of health food. There are packs of cigarettes and rocks painted to look like packs of cigarettes; beer cans, to-go cups and bottled water. There are also clippings from magazines: ads, bits of op-eds, even glimpses of artworks, as well as the familiar graphic design of the New Yorker, Economist and Spiegel magazines. These scanned presentations are flecked with bits of dust, dirt and pollen, or occasionally smeared with something viscous that looks like it is slowly drying, out of reach behind a layer of glossy polyurethane resin. Every one of Stahl’s photographs that I have seen in person is lacquered with the same glassy resin coating. It is impossible not to equate this material sensation with looking at a screen.
This is not to say that seeing one of Stahl’s photographs is comparable to seeing an ad for Cheetos on your iPhone. It’s more like checking your bank statement on your iPhone and being forced to recount what you spend 38 dollars on at two in the morning last weekend, and remembering that you bought Cheetos, a case of Coors, a pack of American Spirits and a bottle of water for the morning. The muddy, proffering hands are empathetic – they’ve clawed back to the surface of the same swamp we’re all treading water atop. While Stahl’s work is clearly critical of contemporary life, she remains an individual navigating it. This feeling of knowing companionship became clear to me in her series that appropriates the packaging design of an alternative grain: quinoa or something. The central motif is a silhouetted farmer, alone with his scythe, among peaceful hills and a glowing sunset. The thought is absurd – I know that if I buy a bag of grain in Berlin that was harvested in South America it could not possibly be the product of a one-man operation. But pitted against Chester Cheeto, it’s convincing enough to at least give me a leg up to some moral high ground, and so, I guess it kind of works. The same could be said for her series featuring American Spirit and Pueblo cigarette branding, which laughs at the absurd whataboutism of any cigarette company claiming moral superiority, but again – it works. When branding works on us, life’s little exercises of persona-defining consumer choosiness are almost automatic, quickly forgotten and relegated back to the swamp or tossed out of a pickup truck window into the desert. Stahl picks them up and brings them back to us with alacrity.
In the lonely farmer pictures, Stahl has collaged a rough-hewn door into the side of the hill where the farmer is working. Doors and the keys to them show up in other pieces as well. They seem like invitations to step into the dim world of used and discarded things.
This world that Stahl seems to occupy is more than that, though. It is a social subconscious that extends beyond food packaging and into the mechanics of society: the oil business, bad-faith political dealing, insularity and feelings of captivity, environmental decimation and extinction. It’s not actually very inviting, but regardless of whether we enter or not, Stahl will continue to drag things up from the murk and press them against the glass.
Occasionally, things make it past the glass, like a group of ammunition boxes that the artist collaged over with clippings from hobbyist military model making catalogs. Here a bleak reality starts to be overtaken by the fantasies that drive it, although they too are rehashings of things that happened years ago. Half-painted Waffen-SS soldiers sit atop a Panzer tank, obscuring the part of the ammo’s tagline. The macabre words “Power” and “Slug” bleed through.
In another series, Stahl has made versions of Tibetan prayer wheels out of old beer cans and oil drums. The real Tibetan versions are generally inscribed with a mantra and can be held – and spun – by hand. Their Buddhist originators saw each revolution of the cylinder as one repetition of the mantra. As far as I understand, it’s like praying on hyper drive. Stahl’s versions are like nagging reminders that the world’s production/consumption cycle is on hyper drive and we are subsumed in it, so thirsty for more that we don’t care if it’s a dressed up version of something we’ve already had and cast aside. While she takes up both what we’ve discarded and what we think we desire – be they originals, historical reenactments or bootlegs – Stahl picks apart the conventions that are abused to give these things meaning. Instead, she puts them to work in service of her own worldview.
This feeling of cyclical persistence whether we want it or not permeates lots of Stahl’s practice. The play-acting soldiers in her behind the scenes photographs of Babylon Berlin and the frozen, miniature military men pasted onto a box of bullets both feel like an unwelcome return. There is the implication that we should take care before waxing too nostalgic about sitting at the precipice of a world war and unthinkable genocide. Seeing history uncannily transposed onto the present is a charged experience. The unease is only heightened by the fact that we are living in a time where xenophobia, national exceptionalism and outright racism have found a way out of their cages of socially enforced repression, onto the placards of political parties, and into our daily lives.
