in celebration of one of my sister's friends admiring my "gamer swag" (all the games i've played that are apparently obscure) i've decided arbitrarily to try to dredge up some obscure games to share with you all in case people are interested in that sort of thing. in terms of determining the obscurity of the game, i think i'm gonna go with less than 1000 reviews, and/or looking at all-time peak concurrent player stats in steam charts. whatever i feel like maybe. Also, if there are absolutely no guides on steam or the internet, then i guess that's for sure obscure.

also these are all games that i've finished. some of them i finished a long time ago so i may not remember much about like. quality. or how good they are. shrug. they're interesting though.

Mini-Game Review: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom was an impulse buy. I bought it, Unruly Heroes, and Windbound at around the same time. Though, Windbound was a game I’d been looking forward to playing after I saw a trailer for it. I haven’t played much of it yet to say too much more and this post is about Monster Boy.

It plays like a standard platformer at times. It does side-scroll but you can backtrack. It’s mostly on a 2D plane with up down and left right movement.

I have terrible platforming skills. I always have. I prefer RPGs almost out of self-defense to platforming. Just kidding, but the fact a platformer needs a lot more precision than I can usually muster is why I, usually, prefer RPGs. 

Now while I call it a platformer, it has a bit of everything in it. There are Adventure RPG style elements, combat, puzzles, and even a few times where it becomes a side-scrolling shoot ‘em up a la Gradius (a game whose name I just had to google because I’ve seen it played but never knew its name). 

This variation in playing styles mostly comes from the forms Monster Boy-whose name is Jin- can take: Pig, Snake, Lion, Dragon, and Human. 

With each new form unlocked, you can then back-track across the game to find things you might have missed before or areas you were previously unable to access.

For instance, there was a chest in a water section that you needed the Snake to access as well as the Pig to shoot a fireball as part of the puzzle solution. 

Each form has its own drawbacks and strengths.

As far as pure platforming the Frog, Human, or Lion are best at that. The Pig and Snake’s jumps leave a lot to be desired and the Dragon can fly making platforming a non-issue. 

Puzzles force you to use both your brain and your timing, which I personally struggled with. 

The controls were frustrating to me-at times-and a few configurations didn’t make much sense to me but I got used to it. There were very few times it felt like the character’s jumps and landing were too slippery and those often involved ice platforms to begin with. 

The Story, as minimal as it was, I found compelling enough that I wanted to know why everyone had gotten cursed and see Jin and his family and friends be free of the spell. 

This game also payed homage to the previous games in the series as this is actually part of the Wonder Boy series. Both with a few 8-bit sections here and there and direct references to some of the previous protagonists. I felt it was a nice touch to honor the past while maintaining its own identity. 

Now on to the aesthetics. I impulse bought this game because I saw footage of it in action and I thought it looked gorgeous. I love games that look like this. It’s not just a nostalgia thing, I just think these games are beautiful. Also, who doesn’t want to play what looks like a cartoon/anime? 

Having beaten the game, I would recommend it, despite how frustrating I found it at times due to my own lack of platforming skills.

It’s wonderful to look at and overall it’s just a good time.

Lair Review for nevvermore #132590

Buckle up, folks, because this review is a doozy! Over 30 dragons, and ALL OF MY LOVE. As is par for the course when we’re talking reviews. ♥

I absolutely had to start with Morrigan, partly because I wrote her lore for you, and partly because I’m such a sucker for that gold/brown aesthetic. Back in 2017, I was this close to moving to Earth instead of Light, if that tells you anything about my aesthetic preferences. But I also really love that little pop of Shadow around her head! It ties in well to her heritage, and sticks out very neatly!

Plus, she’s ambitious as hell and I adore her for that. ♥

Blue-green and brown is another outstanding combo, and Silail wears it so very, very well! I don’t know anything else about her beyond the implications in Morrigan’s lore (yes, I did notice they’re sisters!), but I’m in love with her anyhow. She just has this very fluid grace to her, and I also think you picked a perfect skin. Plus, Imperials can be super hard to dress, but you’ve pulled it off so well here! Great work on this gal!

Akatsuki is a perfect example of a subtle accent taking a dragon to the next level. Without that Trick of the Light skin, I think his mane would look way too flat, making him a lot more dull over all. This skin, though, adds some brightness and depth in a way that works really well! Plus, I love that he looks like a Fire dragon or Fire-adjacent at first glance, but he’s actually got Ice eyes!

First of all, I love this skin so much. I’ve got it slapped on one of my own Water dragons, and I just adore the way it works. More importantly, though, I’m impressed with how you dealt with Neptune’s tert! Normally, I wouldn’t love Thicket paired with Blue and Teal, but the lantern apparel actually does a huge amount of legwork here. It makes it seem like the green of her tert is actually a result of the lantern’s light, a little bit of ambiance on your deep sea friend. Great work dressing her!

What can I say about Felix except that he looks SO HUGGABLE? Seriously, I just wanna give him a big hug. That skin is absolutely adorable, and it’s making me like a male snapper, which I find hard to do a lot of the time. The big boy beans are typically not my favorite. But this boy? Best boy.

I feel like a big chunk of this review is going to be me commenting on your A+ skin and accent usage. Sparkplug is deceptively simple without much apparel, but I really, really like the accent, and the implications it has for a dragon that (I presume) is part of your flight reps. Did she build it herself? What happened that she needed prosthetics? Or is it armor? I’d love to know more!

Also, Lightning unusual eyes are SUCH a pretty shade of blue.

Again, you’ve got another blue dragon here with a green range tert, but I think I’m fixing on the accent. It’s so cute, all those little shells stuck to Terpsichore, and it makes me wonder if they’re decoration, or if she’s just that lovable to shellfish and can’t bring herself to peel them off. 

Unlike Neptune, who you’ve dressed super well and pulled off an odd tert for, I don’t think I care much for Pistachio paired with Periwinkle and Twilight. That said, I love that you managed to make a purple range secondary look blue for cohesiveness!

Turns out Artim is NOT wearing Windbound Plumage, like I thought when I first saw him in your lair. That skin is a solid mimic, though, and I really like it. Plus, it adds a lot of depth and color where Artim would otherwise be a little bit flat and boring, so once again, props for your skin usage! I especially like the way it makes it seem like Artim is growing out of the foliage, rather than the foliage growing off of Artim, if that makes sense. He seems very woodsy and very comfortable.

Sometimes I forget how stinking cute M Faes can be, but Xenon just reminded me PERFECTLY. He’s so swirly and soft and adorable, and I wanna put him in my pocket and take him everywhere! White and Sky make for a classic combo, and that accent makes it look like he’s wayyyyyy up there in the atmosphere, just cruising along. 

Also, the little hints of pink in his wings thanks to Facet add just a touch of extra color and depth. He’s perfect!

Chaorite is wearing a Ravenhearst skin. That alone means she’s looking absolutely beautiful as hell. That is all. ♥

I’ll admit I didn’t care for this accent during last year’s Trickmurk, but you’ve made it look great on Ashrah! I can’t decide whether those little fellas are her minions or if they’re pestering her, but I like the way they look on her nonetheless. It’s a shame that purple in the accent isn’t a touch more pink to complement the rosy tones in her primary and tert, but that’s not exactly something you can control.

Triple Terracotta, especially with PyMorph, is truly *chef’s kiss* and I LOVE HER. Can’t say much else about her, since she doesn’t appear to have lore or apparel or anything, but I love her nonetheless. She’s just prettier than hell.

Brigit is wearing one of my all time favorite festival skins, AND she’s rocking another classic color combo. She’s also worth a mention for her unusual familiar. I’ve noticed you’re normally pretty good at familiar matching, but the Deepwater Traveler you’ve put on her doesn’t match at all. Is there a lore reason for that, or are you just awakening your familiar ASAP?

Ooooh, a primal fella! He’s...so bright you can’t avoid looking at him. Honestly, he actually reminds me a little of a paper kite with that skin, like a kite that gained sentience and flew off on its own (but also just wandered because what’s a kite to do when the wind says “NOPE NOT THAT WAY, THIS WAY”?)

Pretzel is an ABSURDLY cute name for a dragon whose species is known for literally tying themselves in knots out of boredom. And yet again, your skin usage is a blast! Love the blue tones this adds to Pretzel, but it also works awesome with her existing orange colors. She’s very Halloweeny.

See, this is the power of a good skin or accent. I rarely like triples because they can be kind of boring, even with cool genes. But you’ve taken Phobus to the next level with a complementary accent, and I ADORE IT. The tiny horns it gives him are so cute, and I’m a sucker for florals when it comes down to it. Plus, those little butterflies on the wings are extra cute! He’s just soft and sweet all around.

A Ravenhearst skin strikes again! I’m not sure how I feel about black and brown together (Sand seems like a shade too brown, where something lighter and a hair closer to the yellows might be nicer with this skin), but at the end of the day, she’s still a lovely, pretty gal. Plus, all the eyes on the skin are like multigaze but more eldritch horror than site-approved cuteness. There could be a lore goldmine there.

Ahi is SO GOOD. An XYY Bane with complementary colors is no small feat, and I really like how fiery he looks despite being an Ice dragon. Have you considered Skink for him, though? That also has orange accents!

I’ll confess that I’m writing this lair review BEFORE writing your lore, but I couldn’t help but pick Varrick. He looks every inch a bard, and I really like that you’ve given him a Shabby Cane! Since it blends in with his wing, at first glance, it almost looks like it could be a bow. That works doubly well with his familiar being a Ghosthost Viola!

Lethe is giving me UNREAL steampunk ghost vibes. Between the apparel and her tert, she strikes me as a Victorian waif with steampunk enhancements come back to haunt whoever tried to make her more automaton than flesh and blood. And do you have lore plans for her? Is Lethe an intentional name? Can she make dragons forget things? I’d love to know more about her!

Cinder absolutely screams “oh no, sir, it’s such a tragedy my third husband died just like the other two and left me his entire fortune, so terrible, so awful” and it’s making me laugh a little! Not that she’s inherently funny-looking so much as the idea of a murderous widow dragon entertains me A LOT. What are your crimes, Lady Cinder? WHY DID YOU KILL YOUR HUSBANDS...

You have SO MANY PERMABABIES and of all of them, I think I like Banshee the most. But that’s probably because red is my favorite color, and I think baby pearls are honestly such cuties, even if they do have to spend all that time adding to their pearls in...such a gross way. Ew.

Green/brown/yellow range dragons are one of the most powerful forces on this site, and Swamp alone is a color with outstanding power. I said what I said, and I’ll stand by it. It makes Medeni a stellar dragon without any lore or apparel.

I remember when Stained first came out, and I brushed it off as a terrible gene to charge gems for. It was a ripoff, slapping a color overlay on a dragon!

How wrong I was.

Coriolis is a perfect example of how Stained can be used to soften a dragon and given them a lovely, lighter air, and it pairs so well with that accent! She makes me think of that stretch between summer and fall where the colors on the trees are beginning to change, but it’s still warm enough to wear shorts as long as the sun’s out. ♥

Another triple rescued from a dull life by a good skin! Obviously, the point of this skin is to evoke a prisoner in the Fortress of Ends, but what could Raiju have been imprisoned for? What warrants all the chains and ice? Is it a fair punishment?

It feels a tiny bit like cheating to pick another dragon I’ve already written for, but I really do adore branch! All the red accents add some cheer to her, and they make her stand out a little more. I think she’d be maybe a little too green otherwise, but you’ve dressed her perfectly! It also makes her seem approachable and warm, which is great for a healer.

I’m genuinely impressed that you have this little Goat Spiral army, and CiumaObake is my favorite of them all in terms of color. Do you just love baby Spirals with Goat eyes, or is there a lore reason behind this tiny baby army? 

More importantly, is this lair tab just the FR version of corralling a pet or a toddler while yelling “WHAT IS IN YOUR MOUTH”?

I wasn’t part of FR when this skin came out and I am JEALOUS because it looks so nice on Mist! It’s extra frosty and pretty, with that tiny nosy hint on the rose and wings that makes me think she’s looking at a sunrise. She seems very warm and approachable despite the classic Ice aesthetic, and I think she’s outstanding without a drop of apparel.

Plus, you’ve done wonders with yet another triple!

Vedette is getting a mention for that skin alone. It’s so odd-looking in the best way, and I would love to see if you have lore reasons for his appearance! Is he a mutated Gaoler, or is he another creature entirely?

Between that skin and her Speedy familiar, Lusa is really rocking that threateningly pale witch aesthetic. I’m not sure I’d like to meet her in a dark alley. Or even a well-lit alley, to be honest. She’s vaguely menacing in a great way!

I see you, Bill Cipher. I see you.

And last but not least, Mr. Unnamed, living in your projects tab. He’s got some GREAT colors, and I can’t help but see the potential in him! Using Veined with that Sunset tert could really give him a magmatic sort of appearance. I’d love to see what your ultimate plans for him are!

farista is BEAUTIFUL!!! her eerie grasp caught my eye immediately - it matches so well with her runes and roundhorn, and i love how you layered two of them together to get the right color! her apparel overall makes her looks mysterious and weathered, but in an elegant sort of way - a sagely desert-y tundra! and yes!!!!! aesthetic of wood masks and cloaks and runes?? SAME! it suits her so well :D her color scheme is overall super pretty and soft and she seems like the kind of quiet friend you could lean on during hard times

kiva is such a cutie omg??? i love how the voltaic halo and the sage tassel accentuate the lovely blues in her primary and secondary :0 they’re colors that you wouldn’t think would go together but make her look bright and happy and festive! she radiates a sort of colorful, autumnal, vintage aesthetic and i am HERE for it. her colors are so rich and deep and she just gives off really nice, happy vibes!!! the peach plumed apparel makes her look soft and gentle and she just looks so trusting wow- like the kind of friend who would invite you over for tea and hot cocoa and would let you sit there for an hour while you talk casually

i!! love!! eshal!!!! first off, her accent is just STUNNING and contrasts so nicely against her dark colors. the gold and purple color palette she’s got going on gives off the impression of a kind of moody, mysterious royalty aesthetic, which makes sense, considering she’s a demigod- she looks so elegant and haughty and extravagant without going over the top, and her eyes match the glowing clawtips so well too :D and i swear i thought the citrine jewelry you put on her was part of her accent as well; they go so well together! she looks positively ethereal. and all of her art is gorgeous <3

eldridge looks so gentle and elegant with his pastel color scheme ;0 his stained softens his colors so well - i love what it does to the dark spots in orca savannah! pink and gold is always an a+ combo and it’s no exception here. i love love love how well the gladeboughs match his colors, and same with the bowman apparel - which i surprisingly don’t see used much, but it fits perfectly with his colors! the glow from the emblem and halo make him look ethereal too :0 what a sweet-looking boy! and his art is so cool - i love the concept with the hands and how that translates into the sage cover!

nelan is so cool!!!! what a positively RAD accent :0 i love her aesthetic! her apparel makes her seem angry and mysterious, crossing over into eldritch- i love the extra hands given to her by both her accent and the eerie grasp! i also love her autumnal, fiery, woodsy color scheme- the orange in the will o’ the ember contrasts so well against her dark colors but brings out the orange in her pendant and her accent! and i love that pop of color oilslick poison gives her as well :0 what a bright and beautiful and potentially terrifying spiral!

ib!!! what a cool name! and a g1, too :0 i love how well the dark parts in clay ripple go with his secondary! and the raven sylvan apparel matches super well with blood shimmer too <3 he has such a cool aesthetic to him- like an elegant sort of plague?? i love all the bone-themed apparel on him - he looks wonderfully, darkly creepy while still seeming dignified and stylish, especially with the seraph and raven apparel. absolutely has the vibe of a seasoned mercenary- and “stacked and jacked” is an excellent and hilarious description LMAO !! all his art is super impressive too!

omg im dying?? IM DYING??? JESUIT IS LOVELY!!! WOW!!!! her color scheme is so soft and beautiful and elegant thanks to blush stained, and the ethereal flame set goes with her SO WELL!!!! ethereal entourage is one of my fav pieces of apparel and i’m glad to see it used on her because it matches both her and the rest of her apparel! the white mantle and rose thorn collar make her look so pure and innocent and delicate!! i love the layering of the simple pearly bracelets over the desert dynasty cuffs too - they match the darker parts of her highlights in pinstripe so well! what a cutie!! an angel!

i love how soft and colorful and happy hanoi’s color scheme is! what a lovely g1 :D - peacock fits him so well! and it matches the strings in his woodwing as well :0 the windbound plumage matches the accents in skink (and the green hints in peacock, and his eyes, and his emblem) so nicely too! he looks almost like a nature spirit- and his gentle-looking colors and apparel definitely say “healer”! dark sclera looks so cool on him too :0 what a cutie!!

What a spooky looking healer!! I like the muted greens that Sombre brings to the table, but the tiniest detail about her whole outfit that I love is the way her eyes match the snake’s. Out of everything I could possibly notice, that’s what made me the happiest ahah,, But also! Windbound Plumage is one of my favorite apparel pieces, and it really brings her whole outfit together here!

It’s super hard to tell nowadays but when I first joined Flight Rising I was all about mirrors. My custom progen was a mirror and I was happy when my random was one too. Of course they’ve both been breedchanged since then, but Serenity brings out my love for mirrors again. Her colors are incredibly nice (I’m a sucker for neutral colors) and the accent she’s wearing definitely capitalizes on that fact!! Her apparel gives off a somewhat spooky vibe to me; like someone I’d hate to cross but wouldn’t be terribly afraid of??

Ohhhh I love Fauve. I love her. I may just be a sucker for dragons with antlers and also dragons with swords, and she has both. In my opinion, bar, daub, and underbelly are all underrated genes and Fauve really shows this off. Her genes and colors mesh well with the apparel she’s dressed up in, and she looks ready to leap out on the battlefield, or at least give someone a good intimidation!

Ava here immedaitely caught my attention! i couldn't even wait to go through the rest of your lair; i knew she would be one to review! she hits all my favorites; lovely grey/purple kinda shadowy color scheme, female PC, nicely contrasting Ice eyes, simple apparel.. absolutely STUNNING! typically i don't love alloy, but she rocks it! gosh, what a lovely 1st gen, im incredibly jealous!

Nila is such a beautiful swampy guardian lady and i adore her!! she is what (in my own head) every guardian should aspire to be lol. that lovely range of greens is fantastic paired with that hint of purple in her apparel; which covers just enough without being too busy. she doesn't even need a tert to look complete. she does it all on her own!

ooh boy you better watch out before i steal this guy! i loooove when XYZs manage to look like doubles or triples with the right genes, and he just hits the spot! he is so fantastically windy i can't even handle it! the only gripe i have is with the windbound mask, but that's more just because i struggle to like the mask regardless of the dragon its on. i just wish we could see his sweet imp face! though i do feel like its a worthy sacrifice, as the little misty bit the mask adds to the wing area goes perfectly with him!

Thanatos is such a unique and interesting dragon to look at! i adore what the accent adds to his color scheme, and it does so in such a jarring yet satisfying way. especially his neck area, i love that pink fade that skink gives dragons, and it looks lovely with the accent! sometimes i struggle to enjoy dragons wearing mostly silks as i feel like just about any dragon looks good with silks, but Thanatos really does look great in them! they're just far enough from his secondary and tertiary to avoid fading into the dragon and i adore it.

alright, i feel like picking darkly colored PC girls is almost kind of cheating, but gosh you have some beautiful ones and i am weak. Isra is fantastically spooky, and her accent is spectacular! once again i'm impressed at how much i enjoy alloy on this dragon, but how could you not? look how perfectly it matches the silks on her accent! ugh, to die for.

oooooh nooo. this boy is absolutely too precious and sweet. i cant possibly even try to find anything wrong with him. hes just. perfect and soft. he looks like he belongs in my pile of plushies. and hes a shadow dragon to boot? grade A. simply grade A fluff.

now this one is certainly an unusual pick for me, as i typically hate ridgebacks (sorry ;~; i suck i know), but WOW is Kara pretty!! at first i wasnt sure how much i liked how bright her accent was, but as soon as i actually clicked on her page to see her, i changed my mind. you tied it in with her apparel beautifully and it totally works! she gives off some kinda witchy/psychic vibes with her mass amounts of jewelry, her staff, and her herb pouch, and that only makes me love her more.

again.. basically cheating. male fae are my other weakness... but hooooo is this guy good. like, so good. i feel like this is not a color scheme i see often, but i adore it. especially the way that rusty color from his accent looks against that soft yellow of his secondary. what a good desert-y, sunny boy. he’s just what i need only cold, rainy night. 

i’ve come back to this girl twice now, and i still cant decide what it is about her that i love so much. i tend to dislike when apparel kinda just fades into the dragon, but yet in her case... it almost just adds to her aesthetic? i kinda love it? she just kinda looks like shes shimmering, like shifting from one shade of purple to another of redish pink. very shadowy, so i approve.

finally, this SD lady. she intimidates me incredibly, and i feel like she would have zero problems killing me, and yet i find that enchanting somehow lol. she looks like she would be a Plague guard of some kind and i love it. a nice mix of kinda dreary browns/reds and bright bone-white. plus the floral kinda touch gives her just the slightest bit of femininity, which is a nice contrast to the uhh.. ridiculously large and bloody (or is it just rusty) cleaver. regardless, i love her.. but from a distance.
