Time to get back on track and moving along through those national parks 🌲🌲🌲 Here's Wind Cave National Park found in South Dakota! The design features the unique honeycomb shaped calcite formations known as boxwork (which is rarely found anywhere else in the world)! It is also one of the longest and most complex cave systems in the world! . . . . . . #nationalparkgeek #windcave #windcavenationalpark #findyourpark #nationalparkart #nationalparkservice (at Wind Cave National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFdGpijlSmj/?igshid=1abjuxnqcay2a

Two Caves and a Haunted Forest . From Shojiko, take the Blue Sightseeing Bus and get off at #51 Wind Cave stop. Take the road to get to the Ice Cave or take the trail in Aokigahara Forest. 🚶‍♀️Walking trail in the forest is about 30-40mins. 🎫 Entrance ticket to both caves is only 600JPY and exploring the caves takes about 15-20mins each. . Aokigahara Forest sounds familiar to some, it has a morbid reputation of being a Suicide Forest. But the name itself means Sea of Trees, minus the stillness and absence of sound, it's pretty much a normal hiking trail. Ok, it's eerie. . #aokigahara #icecave #windcave #lavacave #cave #forest #yamanashi #japan #travelAsia #traveldiaries #traveldestination #travelguide #asia #backpackers #sonya6000 #goprohero7 #goprohero7black (at Aokigahara Forest) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7M788bpjR4/?igshid=5i9mdcz73oao

Pre-Fuji Climb tour. Visited a wind cave and a really old Ice cave that is below freezing when inside, so it was used for storage.

Wind Cave is the first cave national park and currently, the 6th most extensive cave network in the world. It's most famous for its large concentration of a fairly rare cave formation known as boxwork. Boxwork is formed when dissolved calcium carbonate crystallized in cracks in surrounding rock. The surrounding rock then erodes away and leaves the boxlike calcite crystals.
Alvin McDonald would collecting boxwork formations as specimens to sell at the nearby town of Hotsprings,SD.

Notched off my 30th National Park today in Wind Cave NP. Got in a cave tour and did the East Bison Flats trail hike where I photographed several prairie dogs and even a couple bison. ‘ ‘ Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, these lands are wild and historic. The Black Hills are sacred to the native tribes and are believed to be a source of life. Many great warriors including Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse fought the US military to protect these lands and their way of life. #getoutandexplore #outdoors #findyourpark #nationalpark #windcavenationalpark #windcaves #hike #hiking #blackhills #history (at Wind Cave National Park)

04/19/21 - Gaviota Beach, CA - DEFENDING THE PATH - This morning we hiked a couple miles up to the Wind Caves where we had a great view of the wild flower-covered hills, our campground, the railroad bridge and the ocean. On the way back, we ran into two different rattlesnakes trying to cross the gravel hiking path. The first turned around. The second stuck around and decided to sun himself in the middle of the hiking path. We decided to roll a rock towards it hoping to get a reaction. As you can see, we did. After getting our pics, we rolled some more rocks towards it until it finally got the hint to move on. My guess is that the two snakes were pretty young: only a couple feet long and we could barely hear their short chain of rattles. Glad we were able to get by them without incident.
