oh yay!!! first of all i have to admit that over the years i've dipped in and out of omgcp tumblr and therefore have been very bad at staying up to date, so most of these are quite old. they are my favourites for a reason, however! also i did 6 not 5 lol <3

to be alone with you by @alocalband Will and Derek spend their junior year learning how to live together, learning how to be friends, and, eventually, figuring out that they'd like to be more.

i actually only read this fic recently, but it’s instantly one of my new faves. it is SO well written, the characterisations of every single character are perfect, and the story is so beautiful. i’ve reread it a few times already!

in so many words also by alocalband Derek writes a short story. That's his first mistake. His second is getting it published.

idk why but i absolutely live for fics where everyone on the outside knows what nursey and dex are up to except for them, and this one is really good at it. the ‘derek “nursey” nurse is unchill’ tag is very accurate in this case.

in front of the same small bathroom mirror by @geniusorinsanity It's not surprising that sharing a room changes things, but neither of them expect the most important conversations in their strange, awkward friendship to happen in their shared bathroom. (Or: five conversations Dex and Nursey have in a shared bathroom, and one in bed.)

i absolutely adore this story. dex and nursey learning to coexist and care for each other is so special to me and this fic captures it perfectly. honestly, anything by shelly is going to be a must-read, but this one is really really wonderful.

i always come back to this one. it’s just so sweet and funny. i remember reading it years ago and it has stuck with me all this time.

today the sun comes in by @playedwright Will looks beautiful, Derek thinks, and it isn’t fair. Time has done nothing to lessen the extent of his feelings, either. Derek realizes a little too late exactly why he was nervous. It has been four years, three months, and five days since they graduated from Samwell, and Derek is finally facing the undeniable fact that at some time during his college years, he fell in love with William J. Poindexter and never got around to falling out of it.

this is one of those special fics that stays with you. i have never been to seattle, but this story made me homesick for the city. mars is such a gorgeous writer and this fic is a perfect example of it! (also i miss u mars!!!)

Hockey is a superstitious sport.

Captain William J. Poindexter muses on this as he partakes in the newest tradition of the class of 2018 - sitting on the reading room with his two best friends, watching Chris Chow painstakingly fill a cone with weed in an attempt to solidify his next shutout.

“Derek, I have to be the one to do this,” Chowder says after Nursey’s umpteenth time trying to control the process without touching anything. “Dex is absolutely useless when it comes to weed and the last time I let you fill the cone, Buckets wiped out into our own goal. Do you know what it feels like to have a 6’7” teenager, on your own team, nearly give you a concussion?”

“Yes, actually, because that same impossibly tall defenseman accidentally high sticked me in the face during practice literally last week,” Nursey reminds him.

“Shut up.”

Chris finishes the task at hand and passes the joint to Nursey. “Last point gets first hit.”

As they settle into their new routine, Dex feels the familiar haze building in the bridge of his nose and lets himself relax into the high. He doesn’t think about their disastrous preseason, the shocking standoffishness of the freshman backup goalie, the clicking that’s already started in his left shoulder that he hasn’t told anyone about yet - or any of the other pressures of being captain. The anxiety and stress disappears, just for a few hours. He can just exist.

Until Nursey decides to drop a fucking nuclear bomb.

"Caught Up" (1998) is an underrated hood mystery film with many plot twists that will leave you wondering what will happen next. Written and directed by respected film producer Darin Scott, Bokeem Woodbine leads a solid cast with his very appreciated acting skills and screen presence. Mystery films are not often a part of Black Cinema, and they are even more obscure when you add the hood essence to them. However, "Caught Up" represents an underrepresented genre in Black filmmaking, which I believe has more potential than we can envision.

The soundtrack includes various hip-hop and R&B tracks, a decent mix of hot artists, and solid era representation. The movie also features appearances by LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg.

Now... I legitimately love pretty much every character in Check, Please so much, but Bitty is my favorite character. He is my SON okay. He could actually be my child in real life, we look kind of similar. Same face shape and blonde hair 😭 BUT that's not the point of this post.

Dex comes up as a REAL close second favorite. He is also my child. And I just... love him? So much??

Like he goes through so much character development. My view of canon is also a little warped from reading so much NurseyDex fanfiction, but it's founded on canon Dex. Like he starts off so apprehensive of Samwell and of the team and of Bitty and everyone else and can't get along with Nursey.

He's just incredibly closed off and defensive.

But then.

He starts opening up. Communicating. He starts talking with Nursey over their differences and while they still bicker, their relationship becomes a lot better and they learn about each others struggles instead of being ignorant about it, because each has a specific advantage and disadvantage over the other in society. You get to watch their relationship improve over the three years we get to see them. (Technically four, but I think they only appear once Bitty's freshman year)

And he starts baking with Bitty. When we first see Dex, he literally says "That guy? Wow. I thought since Jack Zimmermann played here, guys would be... less good at baking, if you know what I mean." Which is, honestly, judgemental and could be interpreted as a coded homophobic comment. At least that's how I saw it. But I also see Dex as having internalized homophobia because I do not personally see that boy as straight. So he opens himself up to learning the ways of other people. Bitty says he adopts Chowder as his sweet goalie child, but... Bitty really wound up taking Dex under his wing. I think we can all agree Dex continued Bitty's cooking/baking in the Haus. Maybe as MUCH as Bitty, cause Bitty did a lot, but still, it's there.

And Dex grows super fond of Bitty too. He goes from possibly being a bit homophobic, whether internalized or not, at least apprehensive, to not hesitating to slam the hell out of another hockey player for giving Bitty a hard time just because he's gay.

I just love him so much and I think he grows so much as a person in his time in the comic and becomes way more comfortable with himself in the process.

He still doesn't lose his sass though.

Day 4: Free Day

I’ve wanted to make a nurseydex playlist for years and technically started trying to do it years ago but it always felt like an impossible feat. However, I actually got my shit together and cooked something up for this anniversary week! My first headcannon thing (am I doing this right?)

Dex and Nursey (and Whiskey) just chilling at the Haus

Dex and Whisky studying at the kitchen table. They have a friendship built on dry wit and communicating with eyebrows.

Nursey is getting ready to go out to a thing an important thing, and is freaking out a bit about his outfit (only a bit though, cos he's chill)

Nurse come downstairs with big Look-At-Me energy. He huffs and shifts around around until Whiskey gives in and looks at him.

Nurse whines dramatically about how he looks like shit and he needs to look good and nothing looks good. "Whisk, do I look good?" But he's pitiful and whining and doing puppy dog eyes.

Whisky cracks a half smile, Nursey is genuinely amusing. "You look good Nurse"

Nursey is satisfied for a moment, but doubt and super not chill insecurity comes back, he looks to Dex. Because Dex's opinion matters for some fucking reason.

More huffing and trying to get Dex's attention (not successfully), before "Dex, Dex, do I look good?"

Dex knows that tone, the 'i'm losing my chill, make it it better' tone. Dex also knows their friendship is a fine balance, a constant game to see who the upper hand.

Dex doesn't look away from his laptop, he doesn't look at Nurse. He affects a tone of voice that one might use when telling a 11 year old whatever that want to hear so that they'll go away. "You look good, Nurse"

Nurse pauses, then the huffing and melodrama and the heavy shifting of his body in space returns but bigger. Nurse is going full Extra.

He throws his body up the stairs back to his room whining/yelling about how crap he looks and he can't go out now, he'll have to stay home because he's hideous and "nothing looks good!"

Time passes. Nursey doesn't come down again. He should have left by now. Maybe he's not going to his thing. Shit. And Whiskey keeps looking at Dex, talking with his eyebrow. Whisk's eyebrow is saying "you did this"

Dex groans "What?!" (He knows What). Whisky: "He cares what you think." Dex: "I don't know anything about clothes". Whisk is silent, and slowly raises his eyebrows, just in the middle.

Dex turns "fuck" into a drawn out whine as is he pushes his chair back and very not gracefully heads upstairs.

But Dex has a problem; a genuine compliment will give Nurse the upper hand, it'll be like Nurse won something, and therefore Dex lost, is the loser. Luckily as he reaches Nursey's door he has an idea, a fucking brilliant idea. Give Nurse what he wants but not cede any ground. Dex is a damn genius.

Dex knocks "Nurse, Nurse". From behind the closed door he hears "Nothing looks good, it's all shit". Dex assumes this means 'come in'.

Starfished on the floor in a completely different outfit is Derek Nurse. Dex holds in an eye roll, and waits. Nurse lasts 5 seconds before the curiosity is too much.

Nurse: "What?" Dex waits. "Whaaat?" Dex waits, and lets a smile creep up on the corner of his mouth (he has had a great idea after all).

Nurse sees the smile and gives Dex his full attention (Dex knew he would). Dex waits. Nurse pulls himself up to standing, facing Dex. "What?"

It's time. Dex takes a breath and drops all expression from his face. He meets Nursey's eyes, holds the contact and then very slowly moves his gaze lower.

Dex's gaze roves slowly over Nursey's face to his neck. Dex continues down to Nursey's chest. It feels wierd to be looking like this. Looking so slowly, so deliberately. But he's committed now.

Dex is cataloguing all Nursey's body parts 'abs - check, more abs - check. Holy shit, I'm running out of abs, that's his, I'm looking at his, fuck - check, thighs - check'

Once Dex reaches Nursey's bare feet he starts the slow ascent with his eyes, not letting himself think about whether this really was a good idea.

Dex's eyes finally reach Nursey's face. And Nursey's face is... Nursey mouth is open, his head titled down, his eyes are boring a hole in Dex's own with their intestity. Dex holds Nursey's stare though it feels like staring at the sun. Dex is glad his face is still blank, years of practice.

Dex is nothing if not committed to his own now admittedly stupid idea. With a steady voice, a little deeper than intended, Dex slowing and deliberately says "You look good, Nurse".

Before his face muscles try to move of there own accord, Dex turns around and leaves Nurse's room. Behind him he hears an exhale (was Nurse not breathing?) and the words float out on the out breath, barely above a whisper "fuck me".

Dex smiles, pretty fucking pleased himself. No ground ceded, he still has the upper hand, and he's a damn genius.

Dex is about to round into the kitchen when he hears from the top of the stairs "William J Poindexter, did you just EYE FUCK ME?!?"
