Maria Mitchell In Her Own Words

Dec. 9. I worked on Saturn last evening. It was the 15th evening on Saturn. I mean at some time to collect the “peculiarities” of Saturn and to publish them on a sheet of paper and scatter them around . . . . I find one record in Dawes on a star seen between ball and ring.
Apparently, Dawes – or William Rutter Dawes (1799 – 1868, England) – was known for his “meticulous planetary observations.” I am assuming this is to whom she is referring. He apparently discovered a “crepe ring” around Saturn and focused on studying the planets. When Maria writes “publish” and “scatter them around” – she likely means placing what she discovers into the hands of those she knows. Maria was never keen on publishing but I could see her wanting to share her discoveries with others in a larger way – she did as obviously was necessary in her field. But rather than writing people in long letters, she could have this information printed and ready to go, disseminating it when she saw people but also by mailing it perhaps with pre-printed salutations.

I noticed when the zoomed-in version of this paper appeared that it looked like most articles were fully written out, so then I got very curious about what they said! I can read the titles on the bottom half here, but we never get to see the articles more fully: "Public Health Report", "Lost Cat", and "Retrospective". The top does get more detail, however.

Ruffians Aim to Intimidate a Man of Justice London's top prosecutor Barok van Zieks's life came under threat again as a group of heavily-armed assailants, brandishing large knives and pistols, ambushed him last night. The sight of the Reaper of the Bailey and his companion valiantly keeping the mob of blackguards at bay was captured by this reporter, who then rushed straight away to the police to report this most heinous of crimes. As host of the Great Exhibition, the city of London can ill afford to have such brutal acts of violence occurring in its streets, and the Lord Chief Justice's Office is sure to have a response to this latest incident. As to Lord van Zieks and his condition? All will be revealed in tomorrow's morning edition!

French Court Hears Glass Eye Case The judge de paix of Neuilly was presented today with a most curious case of a lady who refused to pay her dues for the purchase of one glass eyes. The whole affair began when Madame Pluyette, the defendant, ordered the eye as a replacement for the natural one she has lost. Upon its arrival, she found that she could see no more with it than she could before, and became incensed at the thought of paying for a deficient product. King Christian VIII Reverses Ruling, Awards Prize to Mitchells In a rather unexpected fashion, King Christian VIII of Denmark issued a proclamation today announcing the results of his careful reconsideration as to who the rightful winner of the prize his father, Frederick VI, offered for the first man to discover any new comet with the aid of a telescope should be. It appears that the winner will not even be a man at all, but rather a young American lady by the name Maria Mitchell of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Though there were multiple competing claims of the new comet's discovery from all nations, including one by British astronomer Mr. William Rutter Dawes, King Christian was swayed by the fervent petition of Harvard president Edward Everett, who urged the Charge d'Affaires of the United States at Copenhagen, "as the fact of Miss Mitchell's prior discovery is undoubted, and recognized throughout Europe, it would be a pity that she should lose the medal on a mere technical punctilio".

Maria Mitchell did in fact see the comet and receive the award in October 1847, and was awarded by the King of Denmark in October 1848. I believe this case is set in September, and I know liberties were pretty freely taken with other dates, such as the length of Natsume's stay in London, which was originally from 1900 to early 1903. I doubt the game has committed to any particular year, but it's surely set closer to then rather than the 1840s.
The suffragist group seems like the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, founded in 1897. Of course, that timeline also doesn't match up, but I still love the historical easter eggs. As well as just the amusing stories under some of the other headlines.
(@dance-of-deduction you might enjoy this if you didn't already notice it!)

Welcome to my “The Holidays Aren’t Always Happy” collection because I tend to get a bit salty around this time of year. Also, most of the best winter/winter related songs are moody as hell (in my tastes anyway).
So this first one is John Rutter’s setting of Shakespeare’s “Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind,” one of my favorite choral songs I’ve had the pleasure to sing like...ever. Send this to someone who did you dirty this season. Come on, you deserve to be petty!
I’m not sure I did the song justice, but as one person with a DAW, I think it could’ve turned out worse, so I’m pretty happy with it. I might go back and live record the piano part one of these days if I stop being lazy...there’s not much I can do about the choral parts unless there’s an SSAA arrangement of the song I could use I don’t know about unfortunately (my range is not THAT good...but that would be cool if it was!). Also if someone knows where I can find a better choral VST plugin, let me know because while the one I have now isn’t bad, it doesn’t match up as well as I would like with the other plugins I bought (and SoniVox doesn’t have a choral track for...some reason?) So I did it as an accompanied solo, it works out okay.
Anyway, so ‘tis the season to be salty, next up is Tundra if I can get a hold of some sheet music for it (because that’s also an incredible piece and I can actually do all the parts!) Enjoy!
(PS: I know heigh is supposed to be pronounced like “hey” but I don’t like how that sounds so I just go with “high” instead...it’s my cover leave me alone!)
Lyrics:
Blow, blow thou winter wind Blow, blow thou winter wind Thou art not so unkind as man’s ingratitude As man’s ingratitude
Thy tooth is not so keen Because thou art unseen Although thy breath be rude Although thy breath be rude
Heigh ho! Sing heigh ho! Unto the green holly Most friendship is feigning Most loving mere folly
Then heigh ho, the holly This life is most jolly
Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky That dost not bite so nigh as benefits forgot As benefits forgot
Though thou the waters warp, Thy sting is not so sharp As friend remembered not As friend remembered not
Heigh ho! Sing heigh ho! Unto the green holly Most friendship is feigning Most loving mere folly
Then heigh ho, the holly This life is most jolly
