part of the reason i think cradle works so well as a book series is that the magic system is tied to character growth and narrative arcs. the cast have to find and define a concrete identity for themselves, overcome their personal roadblocks and issues, and work together to eke out a win.
which means that the high points in the action and the overarching plot are directly tied to the high points in character arcs, which results in effectively double the emotional weight for any given scene.
and it's all sincerity. there's no bathos, no undercutting the emotional impact of any given action.
