THE AFRICAN WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
New Post has been published on http://www.vennomax.com/africa/tourism/the-african-wildebeest-migration/
THE AFRICAN WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
This is one of the most explicit breathtaking nature got it occurrence that is found in the continent Africa in Kenya. Basically, it falls under the 7th wonder of the world as the question still goes why the specific River Mara, The same crossing point full of the water carnivores and the aggressive night herbivores and lastly the time in which these beautiful creatures crosses on either sides of the .
The species falls under the genus Connochaetes ranking down to the family Bovidae; According to the Binomial naming of species, they are known as the Connochaetes gnou/Connochaetes taurinus being the white and blue bearded wildebeest. In the Maasai Mara, the community around which is commonly known as the “Maa” community calls it gnuu. The Maasai Mara (Kenya) –Serengeti (Tanzania) migration is dominated by the blue and the white bearded wildebeest which migrates to Kenya when the pasture in Kenya is high and back to Tanzania on the high pasture season. I would call these kind of movement “transhumance” as you only go to another place when the conditions are favourable. To keep in mind, there are the residential wildebeests on either sides of the country and they had once in their lifetime participated in the migration but probably due to age or adaptability became fond of the either ecosystems.
Over the past years, the migration had declined up to about 63% in Kenya and that implicate some sort of trauma on the hotel and tourism sector. Something probably has to be done to check on the reason as per to why the decline is in place and what are the possible actions that can be taken to reboots the great migration. Could we talk or blame it in the decline in the volume of Mara River or could it be climate change?
I must confess the migration is something that anyone would wish to have a good view of. The manner in which the animals dive into the Mara River is something of mixed experience view as I cannot really explain. An animal of about 300 kilograms dives into the river with the forearms and the head almost on the same level to create some kind of streamlined body and on the other side pops right up like a champion diver. I mean it is more hilarious than I had imagined before having the real experience. Believe you me, you can never miss it with nature as nature thrives where it wants. Make some plan and have a treat for your holidays.
Have imagined for a long time, what is the fate of the wildebeest who constantly does not make it to the either sides during the migration? The kind of experience these herbivores faces during the migration. Of cause the food chain has to be in a continued motion and the fight is real in the water. I guess the frequency and the energy released in a kick from a wildebeest is electrifying to the predator the crocodiles and additionally, a fight is worth it for survival. A number of them dies in the process and the probability for the change in the constituent of the Mara River is high. Maybe some kind of research is ought to be carried out to determine the effect that it might have on the community consuming on the same.
Wildbeast diving to escape a Crocodile
This year was quite a surprise, as all over sudden the number of the wildebeest increased in the August migration. I can estimate it to 5% increase which of cause is a good indication. But what do you think is the sudden cause? Could it be some sort of confusion due to the climate change? Could it be the Kenyan reserve area has improved so much in the pasture content? An ultimate result will be known sooner when the next migration will take place.
The impact of the migration cannot be left behind as the community around complains of some kind of viral infection to their livestock and to a higher percentage it occurs during the migration. Almost 3% of livestock is lost daily on each migration.
