Indian startups explore forming an alliance and alternative app store to fight Google’s ‘monopoly’
Google, which reaches more internet users than any other firm in India and commands 99% of the nation’s smartphone market, has stumbled upon an odd challenge in the world’s second largest internet market: Scores of top local entrepreneurs.
Dozens of top startups and firms in India are working to form an alliance and toying with the idea of launching an app store to cut their reliance on Google, five people familiar with the matter told TechCrunch.
The list of entrepreneurs include high-profile names such as Vijay Shekhar Sharma, co-founder and chief executive of Paytm (India’s most valuable startup), Deep Kalra of travel ticketing firm MakeMyTrip, and executives from PolicyBazaar, Sharechat and many other firms.
The growing list of founders expressed deep concerns about Google’s “monopolistic” hold on India, and discussed what they alleged was unfair and inconsistent enforcement of Play Store’s guidelines in the country.
The conversations, which began in recent weeks, escalated on Tuesday after Google said that starting next year developers with an app on Google Play Store must give the company a cut of as much as 30% of several app-related payments.
Dozens of executives “from nearly every top startup and firm” in India attended a call on Tuesday to discuss the way forward, some of the people said, requesting anonymity. A 30% cut to Google is simply unfeasible, people on the call unanimously agreed.
Vishal Gondal, the founder of fitness startup GOQii, confirmed the talks to TechCrunch and said that an alternative app store would immensely help the Indian app ecosystem.
TechCrunch reached out to Paytm on Monday for comment and the startup declined the request.
In recent months, several major startups in India have also expressed disappointment over several of the existing industry bodies, which some say have failed to work on nurturing the local ecosystem.
The tension between some firms and Google became more public than ever late last month after the Android-maker reiterated Play Store’s gambling policy, sending a shockwave to scores of startups in the country that were hoping to cash in on the ongoing season of Indian Premier League cricket tournament.
Google temporarily pulled Paytm’s marquee app from the Play Store citing repeat violation of its Play Store policies. Disappointed by Google’s move, Paytm’s Sharma said in a TV interview, “This is the problem of India’s app ecosystem. So many founders have reached out to us… if we believe this country can build digital business, we must know that it is at somebody else’s hand to bless that business and not this country’s rules and regulations.”
Google has sent notices to several firms in India including Hotstar, TechCrunch reported last month. Indian newspaper Economic Times reported on Wednesday that the Mountain View giant had also sent warnings to food delivery startups Swiggy and Zomato.
Vivek Wadhwa, a Distinguished Fellow at Harvard Law School’s Labor and Worklife Program, lauded the banding of Indian entrepreneurs and likened Silicon Valley giants’ hold on India to the rising days of East India Company, which pillaged India. “Modern day tech companies pose a similar risk,” he told TechCrunch.
Some of the participating members are also hopeful that the government, which has urged the citizens in India to become self-reliant to revive the declining economy, would help their movement.
Other than its reach on Android, Google today also leads the mobile payments market in India, TechCrunch reported earlier this year.
The giant, which has backed a handful of startups in India and is a member of several Indian industry bodies, invested $4.5 billion in Mukesh Ambani’s telecom giant Jio Platforms earlier this year.
India’s richest man Ambani, who runs oil-to-retails giant Reliance Industries, is an ally of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jio Platforms has attracted over $20 billion in investment from Google, Facebook, and 11 other high-profile investors this year.
The voluminous investment in Jio Platforms has puzzled many industry executives. “I see no business case for Facebook investing in Jio beyond saying we need regulatory help,” said Miten Sampat, a high-profile angel-investor on a podcast published Wednesday.
“This is a white-collar way of saying there is corruption involved, and if the government gets upset, I have invested somewhere with some friend of the government. All of us are losing at the benefit of one company,” he said. Sampat’s views are shared by many industry executives, though nobody has said it on record and in such clear terms.
Google said in July that it would work with Jio Platforms on low-cost Android smartphones. Jio Platforms is planning to launch as many as 200 million smartphones in the next three years, according to a pitch the telecom giant has made to several developers. Bloomberg first reported about Jio Platform’s smartphone production plans.
These smartphones, as is the case with nearly 40 million JioPhone feature phones in circulation today, will have an app store with only a few dozen apps, all vetted and approved by Jio, according to one developer who was pitched by Jio Platforms. An industry executive described Jio’s store as a walled-garden.
A possible viable option for startup founders is Indus OS, a Samsung-backed third-party store, which last month said it reaches over 100 million monthly active users. As of earlier this week, Paytm and other firms had not reached out to IndusOS, a person familiar with the matter said.

Coronavirus blow: Firms prepare for slow capital flows, uncertainty
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/coronavirus-blow-firms-prepare-for-slow-capital-flows-uncertainty/
Coronavirus blow: Firms prepare for slow capital flows, uncertainty
Tumblr media
Record capital flows into Indian startups, many of which have been chasing growth at all costs and seen valuations multiply in the past year, are expected to halt in the coming months as coronavirus disrupts economies around the world.
Companies have started preparing for the impact, initiating measures to protect their businesses and workforce. Paytm, Swiggy and Dailyhunt are among the firms which have announced mandatory work from home for employees while trying to maintain business continuity.
But tougher calls lie ahead: reducing cash burn, prioritising monetisation of existing customers over user growth, and adopting a strategy to break even or become profitable in what has been called a “Black Swan” event by Sequoia, the world’s top venture capital firm.
Tumblr media
Online travel company MakeMyTrip’s executive chairman, Deep Kalra, now sees another “tough cycle” and a repeat of the 2008 global financial crisis that followed the collapse of Lehman Brothers. “People will hold back, which means grain gets separated from the chaff. Hunker down is my advice to all founders. Cash is completely the king; change your plans and survive the toughest times,” he said at an event in Delhi last week.
But the coronavirus outbreak and its effects are expected to change the investor mood in the coming months. Sudhir Sethi, founder and chairman of Chirate Ventures, said it would get tougher for both VCs and entrepreneurs, given the uncertainty over the scale of the impact of coronavirus on the global economy.
“Travel has fundamentally stopped. Limited Partners, or LPs, who invest in funds, have stopped travelling. Portfolio companies will really have to buckle down and save cash. Businesses will start getting tighter, spend less and last longer. They have to stay afloat and do well. This applies to both venture capital funds as well as portfolio companies,” said Sethi, whose portfolio companies include vertical e-tailers like Lenskart and Firstcry.
The impact on startups which are have cash reserves for six to 12 months and are looking to raise $15 million to $20 million will be the most significant, according to investors. These companies could face a potential cash crunch as they rely on investors based in the US and China. Travel to and from these countries, especially China, is unlikely to normalise before June or July.
Most of the top investors, like Tiger Global Management, Sequoia Capital India and Lightspeed Venture Partners, are in travel lockdown as venture firms with smaller teams could be at an even higher risk.
Though investors won’t stop evaluating deals, the decision-making cycle will take much longer. “Deals, where decisions have not been taken, could drag on. The consequence will be more internal rounds as it’s a genuine issue. Even companies that are doing well will need more time to raise money,” said Vinod Murali, managing partner at venture debt firm Alteria Capital. Meanwhile, investors are advising startups to rework their projections as a potential fall in top line could decrease the projections of their cash runways.
Supply chain still a concern “Expect companies with significant supply-chain linkages with China to be impacted in the short term,” said Aakash Goel, partner at venture debt firm Trifecta, adding that apart from online retail companies in social commerce and mobility, firms waiting for electric vehicle imports from China could also be affected. “I would suggest that startups focus on business continuity, ensuring safety stock on the supply side and using the crisis as an opportunity to strategically think about supply chain diversification, and even potentially indigenising portions of it.”
Some companies are already doing it. Fitness wearables maker Goqii, whose smartwatches are manufactured in Shenzhen, China, is evaluating alternative facilities in India, Vietnam and Taiwan. “One thing is certain now that we won’t like to rely only on China for our manufacturing,” said Goqii CEO Vishal Gondal. He added the company had deferred its new funding round for a few months and stopped mass media marketing to lower cash burn.
“Luckily our business model has been gross margin positive, so we were not in a rush (to raise money),” he said.

India’s leading fitness startup becomes a Harvard case study
Image: goqii
GOQii, India’s No. 1 health and fitness startup, is now a case study on the famed Harvard Business Publishing platform, a subsidiary of Harvard University that brings out books, magazines and leadership studies for MBA students.
It is only the third Indian startup after Flipkart (India’s largest online retailer and Amazon rival) and Paytm (India’s biggest mobile payments firm backed by China’s Alibaba Group) to feature as a Harvard case study.
SEE ALSO: MIT researchers develop a wearable social coach for people with Asperger’s
On the surface, GOQii is a fitness band that competes with the likes of Fitbit, Xiaomi’s Mi Band, Nike’s FuelBand, Jawbone and so on. But there’s more to it.
GOQii is actually a service on top of a wearable device. The ecosystem consists of personalized health coaches, trainers, nutritionists, behavioral psychologists, etc, who are available 24×7 on the cloud, and help users interpret their body data and make changes to their health and lifestyle.
Most recently, GOQii has also enrolled diagnostic centers and hospital chains on its platform, and will soon tie up with health insurance services too.
Image: GOQII
“Our business model is very different than the traditional hardware companies since we focus on a subscription model with much higher engagement and lifetime value,” Vishal Gondal, founder and CEO, GOQii, tells Mashable.
“Hence, it won’t be fair to compare us to Xiaomi or Fitbit. In fact, our platform integrates with data from multiple wearable and apps,” he says.
The Harvard case study titled Envisioning a New Fitness Future will capture GOQii’s entire evolution from a fitness band to a complete health ecosystem.
The case is divided into two parts:
(1) Part A details GOQii’s journey from its incorporation in 2014 until April 2016.
(2) Part B deals with its broadened service offering that ties doctors, diagnostic centers, hospitals, payments, etc.
Students will obtain lessons on Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneurship, Healthcare and Technology through the GOQii case study.
“It is a proud moment for us that the student community is looking at the success of GOQii as a benchmark for their management program. This case study reinstates our vision of healthy living and preventive healthcare,” says Gondal.
GOQii retails on Amazon in India and the US; the band comes bundled with a 3-month service subscription at $49.

After Akshay Kumar receives Backlash for FAU-G Co-founder says 'The Game Is Not Trying To Copy Or Mimic PUBG'
On the evening of Wednesday, the Central Government of India, banned 118 Chinese mobile apps, including the popular game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, popularly known as PUBG. After the ban on the game, the fans were very heartbroken and Twitter was Flooded with the breakdown of this decision. However, days after the ban Akshay Kumar came up with alternative Made-In-India Version of PUBG name FAU-G abbreviation of Fearless and United-Guards.

Akshay Kumar is backing a Made-in-India PUBG like shooter named ‘FAU-G’
Taking the Aatmanirbhar movement a little too literally, Indian game developers are already starting developments to replace the recently banned wildly (for the lack of a better word) popular PUBG. One of the early movers is a game called ‘FAU-G’, which seems to have already received noted actor Akshay Kumar’s blessings. ‘FAU-G’, or the  “Fearless and United-Guards” app is currently under development, and will make its way to mobile devices pretty soon.
The announcement was made by popular Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who said:
This comes just a few days after PUBG mobile was banned in India, in addition to 117 other Chinese apps.  The ban was sanctioned under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, stating that the apps “are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of State and Public Order.”
Many media houses claimed that this was in retaliation to China’s movements at the Ladakh Border, much like the TikTok ban earlier this year. Today’s announcement further solidifies India’s stand to weed out Chinese influence inside its borders.
As mentioned, FAU-G is a multiplayer action game, which will focus on not just entertainment but educational value as well, said Kumar in an instagram post. Players of the game will learn about the sacrifices of Indian soldiers, with 20% of net revenue being donated to BharatKeVeer Trust, which was set up after the deadly 2019 Pulwama terror attack on Indian soldier camps, sponsored by the Pakistan Army.
The game is being developed by Bengaluru-based nCore games which counts Indian gaming industry veteran Vishal Gondal as an investor. Not much is known about the game, including if it will feature a battle royale mode or not. However, seeing how the announcement came just in time to replace PUBG (not to mention the similar sounding title), it’s fair to assume that the game won’t be very different from the banned app.
While the announcement has created some momentum, FAU-G however will have to rapidly up its development cycle, if it intends to capture the massive market left open after PUBG’s ban. Reports and data suggest that players have quickly moved on to Call of Duty, the mobile version of which is also ironically developed by China’s Tencent gaming subsidiary, TiMi studios. In games such as these, specially with ‘Battle Royale’ modes, it is extremely complicated to get the physics right. PUBG, despite its popularity, was always in the crosshairs for its not-so-accurate game physics. Activision’s Call of Duty however, excels brilliantly in that domain.
PUBG meanwhile has already been removed from Indian versions of Google Play Store and Apple App store, and a move by telecommunication companies may be right around the corner.

FAUG Game : Can it make space in our heart similar to PUBG?
FAUG Game is similar to PUBG? PUBG Mobile was banned in India recently, after which it’s also been excluded from both the Google Play Store and the App Store.
Amongst these numerous PUBG Mobile substitutes, for time being, a new Indian alternative — FAU: G — has been confirmed to satisfy the need to play the Royal Game War, satisfying the goal of depending on Indian applications and goods at the same time.
Vishal Gondal, CEO of GOQii, said through an official tweet that FAU-G was created in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar App campaign.
The specifics of the FAU: G action game and the precise date of release remain undisclosed at the time of publishing. Seeing as PUBG Mobile is a competitor, the game is supposed to be a multiplayer shooter game.
Entrepreneur Vishal Gondal, CEO of GOQii Fitness Tracker Manufacturer, posted a tweet on Friday to announce the creation of FAU-G. Gondal, who created India Games in 1999, that he sold to Disney in 2011, invested an unspecified amount in the nCore Games in March of last year and supports the company as a strategic advisor.

Several Indian game developers are using PUBG Smartphone ban as an incentive to add alternatives to the market. Similar was the case with TikTok when the short video site was banned in the region. There are apps like Chingari, Mitron, Roposo, Moj, and several others that have replaced TikTok in the region.
The core games have yet to share further information about the action game. Speaking of the game, Gondal said that, as the name implies, FAU-G will teach players about the sacrifices of Indian soldiers. He also said that 20% of the net income will be donated to the BharatKeVeer foundation.
