Tell us more about trans girl Max au please. That sounds like an interesting take
I just kind of leaned into the gender troubles themes of the original apokatastasis (where Max is undersocialized and therefore develops Special Editions of internalized ideas about gender) and just went. Why not. Lets just lean into it.
There's all these levels of like, the gendered violence in Max's home growing up (and how she and her mother were the biggest recipients of it). The RELIGIOUS elements, because her father was like. An insane apocalyptic psychotic guy. She was punished by her father every time she showed an inkling of femininity and at the minimum discouraged by her mother.
And then there's Daniel, who isn't great and perfect about all of it, but he's queer and he at least understands the alienation. It's like, the mid 2000s, and the only language he's really had for himself is derogatory. So that plays into it. He's a teenager still when she finds him. When she tells him she wishes she was a girl, he thinks, I don't even know how to be a man. How am I supposed to teach you how to be a woman.
