I hate chemistry...

Any suggestions/inspiration for a STEM-focused, dark academia aesthetic? I'm something of a reformed humanities student finishing an engineering degree this time around.
I think STEM in Dark Academia is an underappreciated aesthetic. The humanities seek to understand what it is to be human, and this is a complex venture indeed. But studying STEM means you seek to understand the world around you. And my God, are there mysteries to be uncovered. Let’s go down the list together, shall we?
SCIENCE.
Latin words fall from your lips as easily as a prayer, and isn’t there piety in this? Devotion, worship? There must be, for you to be able to dig your hands into the breathing body of the world around you and have it speak back. Messily scrawled chemical equations are practically tattooed onto your arms and hands, and sometimes you wake with the molecular structure of a human red blood cell drawn carefully on your heart with no memory of putting it there, but it moves with the pulse of your heart. Bubbling beakers and plumes of emerald, cobalt, violet flame. Faded lab coats. Hair cut short or pulled back neatly, not a single tendril hanging down. Dirt under fingernails, sleeves rolled up and out of the way. You know poisons, toxins, you know the pump of blood through arteries, you know how close we are to death, and you know how it feels to hold the hand of human long dead, still cold from the cooler. Death hates you, because you are helping humanity evade it.
TECHNOLOGY.
Lines and lines of code stare back at you from the over-bright screen of your monitor. You know, you know that we could be more, that the future is a few keystrokes away if only you can organize your tumbling thoughts and the wall of symbols in front of you. You like the way robots move; tiny, carefully planned, yet oh so jerky motions that can’t help but remind you of when a baby deer takes its first quivering steps. You think humans were like this once, in the beginning. You think the movement in a motor resembles the inner workings of a human heart. You imagine the veins that pump blood through your body as wires on a circuit board delivering electricity from one place to another. Leather shoes laced as tightly as possible, tiny blueprints doodled on the soles. Bronze bells hanging from a bedroom window, a crumbled silk shirt. How far can you push at the boundaries of what is possible before something breaks? Will it be you or reality that gives first?
ENGINEERING.
What is it about the smoothing of clay into shapes that makes humanity stop and say, “This must be what it feels like to be God”? How much more can you feel it, with the power in your fingertips and in the corners of your mind to make things humans could never do? To push civilization past its breaking point and remake it anew, better, stronger, more than God ever did? What is the difference between man and machine, and should you even care in the first place? You are like God alright, you are participating in something divine, something holy. You double check every equation and think about what it means to be alive. You decide that, in the ever moving cogs of this great clock, you will be the first piece that moves, the one that pushes the others to succeed. Pencils stabbed into messy buns, lipstick stains on pale coffee cup rims. Your eyes are sharp and focused, but your thoughts are ever moving and desperate with desire to create, to bound forward into the future you are oh so carefully envisioning, every piece laid out and pinned down within an inch of its life. Children are starving, the world is burning, and you can do something, you can fix this, because if you don't, who else can? Who else will?
MATHEMATICS.
What is math? A meaningless formal game. Above the door at Plato’s Academy were inscribed the words, “Let no one enter here who is ignorant of geometry.” How can it be that both are true? A secret language exists that no one is born into, but is available to all willing to learn. Astronomy, the constant ever cycling of the universe around us, our own home a puzzle piece in a cosmic dance. Meandering lines of equations that are beautiful, beautiful, because you know what they mean and they speak to you, they sing. You write them with calligraphy pens and hang them above your desk, they are as much an expression of the human condition as a Picasso; show our creativity more than a Monet. Hands dirty from dragging them over cramped pages of numbers and graphite dust, equations traced into the foggy glass of your favorite coffee shop, messy hair and bitten down nails, math pun t-shirts under tweed blazers, the theory of relativity scrawled sloppily on your knee, the world around you the sum of shapes and numbers and you can see it, you can hear it.
STEM in Dark Academia is nonstop in its restlessness. There is always more to be discovered, further to push, limits that can and will be broken. There is a darkness to that beauty, a madness that permeates the cracks of every field. A historian could have told you not to make the atom bomb. A scientist can’t help themself from seeing how much destruction is possible.

| treasured | a david/genya fic
my participation to the mini-bang for @grishaversebigbang ♡ This was so fun to write, and a million thank you to my two wonderful materialki! Please check out their amazing work:
@nuclearnik [link] @zemenipearls [link]
Rating: General Audiences Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Trauma, proposal, set between Ruin and Rising and King of Scars, Canon Compliant, david is a nerd and he loves his soul mate very very much, cw: nerdy descriptions of rocks, Grishaverse Minibang Summary:
“David, you didn’t have to…”
He frowned and cocked his head. “Yes, I did. It’s customary to gift a ring when asking someone’s hand in marriage.”
He was never good at understanding social norms, but he was pretty sure he’d gotten that one right.
David pressed the button on the side of his microscope goggles, switching the lens to a more magnifying glass. In the palm of his gloved hand, a crystal gleamed, like sparks of purple fire trapped in stone. The light hit each of its faces in slightly different ways, creating an explosion of colours and geometrical shapes. It was even more beautiful seen up close, when David could not only admire the beauty of the thing, but also the elegant laws of science that made the light refract just so.
Crystals were complicated to work with. Their beauty was due to a highly specific geometry at the molecular level, and any careless alteration could damage their inner core, breaking the stone or making it duller. Even if some were strong enough to cut glass, crystals were precious; they needed to be handled with the utmost care.
David loved working on crystals.
His quiet work was interrupted by anguished sobs coming from the bed.
Quickly, he slipped the stone in a bit of fabric and rushed from his desk. Genya was having another nightmare. Throwing off his glasses and gloves, he hurried to find her on the bed. He took her in a protective embrace as she sobbed, screamed, legs jerking in panic. She clawed at the air around, desperately chasing off a horde of invisible nichevo'ya.
“Stop,” she begged. She wasn’t talking to him.
David held her tighter. Every time he saw her this way, so anguished and pained, helpless to her inner demons, a bitter guilt settled in him, consigned in a single thought: I should have protected her.
Then the guilt faded into hot-white anger — at the Darkling, who had done this to her, who had known how much it would hurt and keep hurting her — until David discarded that emotion, too. Rage and regret were not useful feelings to linger on. Helping Genya get through this, making her pain more bearable — these were the only things that mattered.
Eventually her movements calmed, her hiccupping sobs turning into shallow breaths and silent tears. David caressed her hair, the auburn locks softer than any silk he’d ever felt, and dropped feather-light kisses on her forehead. Genya nestled closer to him, burying her face in his neck. He could feel the wetness of her tears trickling on his skin.
“You’re safe, dear,” he whispered, knowing that he would do everything in his power to make sure this would always be true, from now on. “You’re safe.”
Her grip tightened on his shirt.
“W-were you awake?” she said, her voice still shaken.
David recognized the change of topic as her way to distract herself from the nightmares that lingered in her wakefulness. He played along.
“Yes,” he said, kissing her hair. “I was working late.”
“It’s almost morning,” she murmured. “You work late a lot lately.”
“I’m working on a project.”
“What project?”
David hesitated; Tamar had said he was supposed to keep it a secret. Keeping anything from Genya was hard enough normally, but when she was vulnerable like this, it was downright impossible.
He got up to get the piece of fabric — Genya followed him out of bed, not wanting to let go of his embrace, and he smiled, endeared. Gently, he led her back to the bed, sat next to her, and put his creation in her open palms.
“It’s not finished,” he warned.
Genya carefully unwrapped the silk. Her eyes widened at the sight of the ring, a glistening band of grisha steel wrapping like branches around a rose-shaped stone. When she turned it to get a better look, the candlelight shining through the crystal switched its colour from red, to purple, to blue.
“I altered the refracting index at different levels of the structure to make the crystal polychromatic,” David explained, excited in spite of himself. “I’ve done this with metals before, but never with crystal. It still needs polishing before I can give it to you, though.”
Genya’s eyebrow shot up, looking shocked. “This is for me?”
“Of course.” He admired the ring against Genya’s hand, as beautiful as he’d expected. It would be perfect once she wore it. Silver and red always complemented her pale, rosy skin, the way gold and purple complemented the bronze colour of his own.
“David, you didn’t have to…”
He frowned and cocked his head. “Yes, I did. It’s customary to gift a ring when asking someone’s hand in marriage.”
He was never good at understanding social norms, but he was pretty sure he’d gotten that one right.
“Y-you’re—” Genya croaked, her skin visibly flushed, “you’re proposing to me?”
“Not right now,” David corrected. “Tamar told me it had to be a special moment, so I’m still working on the details of that.”
He’d been thinking of doing it at sunset, for one. The fiery hues of the sky when the sun slipped under the horizon always reminded him of Genya’s hair, and it would look good on the ring. He’d calculated which part of the palace would be the most adequate spot — a corner of the Summoner’s field provided the perfect exposure for the ring to reflect sunrays and shimmer beautifully — but he needed a reason to bring Genya there that wouldn’t alarm her. Tamar had suggested a picnic, which David had found confusing since they never ate on the training grounds, but Genya did enjoy it when he cooked for her.
His thoughts came to a brutal halt when he realized Genya was crying.
David blinked. Had he done something wrong? He was always so bad at this stuff — he couldn’t count how many times he’d offended someone without meaning to, but Genya usually saw past his awkwardness and understood his meaning.
“Genya…” he said, hesitant, “I’m sorry, did I…”
“You’d want to marry me?” she sniffled, eyes cast down, tears gliding down her cheeks.
David was even more confused. Tamar’s advice hadn’t covered that part. “Yes. Of course.” Had that not been clear?
“Why?” Genya met his gaze. “Why would you… We haven’t even been together that long, you can’t know —”
Like the unknotting of a rope, suddenly, David understood. This was just like the imagined nichevo'ya. She was panicked, sure that the worst was yet to come, that she couldn’t be safe in her own home.
Softly, he cupped her cheeks, bringing her closer. He wished he could take some of the burden that weighed on her, carry it on his shoulders instead of hers, for once; wished he knew the right words to make her feel better, the perfect formula to soothe her fear. But this burden was Genya’s, and David was never good with words. All he could say was the truth.
“I agree that our romantic relationship has not been exceedingly long,” he admitted. A year only accounted for a twentieth of their age so far. Five percent of a life, and some change. “But I have been in love with you for seven years, five months, and twelve days. Our friendship is even older than that,” he pressed his forehead against hers, “and I’ve wanted to marry you from the first time you kissed me.”
His lips brushed hers, an echo of that day at the Spinning Wheel, when the bravest woman in the world had first chosen him.
“I realized at the time that this wasn’t a rational impulse,” he conceded, “so I waited to see how our companionship would grow. I believe I’ve now waited long enough to know. I feel at peace in your company, and I want to make you as happy as you make me.” He pulled back a little, retreating his hands. “Unless you do not want that, in which case I will respect—”
Before he could finish, Genya pulled him into a kiss — the dizzying, head-spinning kind of kiss he’d only ever experienced with her. When she kissed him like that, arms wrapped tightly around his shoulders, lips flush and panting, David’s usually overworking mind would quiet, snuffed out like the wick of a candle, replaced only by her . Soft hair, delicate skin, lips scarred and still wonderful, her scent a unique aroma he’d come to associate with peace, with home.
“Of course I want to,” she whispered against his lips, smiling coyly.
David kissed that smile, then her cheek, then her temple. “I’m relieved to hear that,” he sighed. “I’ll keep working on that proposal, then.”
Genya laughed, sweet and bright — David didn’t care much for music, but he could have listened to Genya’s laugh for hours. He tucked the ring back in the fabric and put it on the nightstand, where it wouldn’t get lost in the sheets, then took off his shoes and his shirt.
They lied together, Genya’s body half on top of his, snuggling close, as though any space between them might bring in the cold.
Genya brushed her fingers on David’s chest, tracing some patterns.
“So,” she said, her voice now clearer, more sure of herself — Genya in daylight, where the monsters couldn’t touch her. “What was that about seven years, five months, and twelve days?”
“Oh, hm…” David said. He could feel his face heat up, and felt irrationally glad for the brown of his skin, unlikely to show any hint of a blush.
Still, he told her the story of that day. Genya had visited the Fabrikator’s laboratory to make a new cosmetic for the queen. She’d been thirteen years old, and already so creative with her powers. At the time David had only reproduced what his masters had taught him as perfectly as he could, never trying to invent, to create.
But there had been Genya Safin, the first of her kind, inventing everything she did.
It wasn’t the first time they’d met, not even the first time they’d enjoyed each other’s company, but it was the first time David had watched her work. He hadn't even bothered saying hi (which he now realized had been rather rude), too eager to ask her question about her experiment. They’d talked, and when David had gone on a long tangent about his favourite way to colour glass, Genya hadn’t been bored or made fun of his enthusiasm, the way the other students usually did if they bothered to listen to him at all.
She’d listened with care and attention, and then she’d given him her opinion — smart, succinct. Perfect.
“How do you even remember the day this happened?” Genya laughed. “It was so long ago.”
David caressed her shoulder, a soothing, circular motion. “I remember everything, when it comes to you.”
“Cheesy,” she grinned.
“Maybe.” He felt his lips quirk in a smile of his own. “But it’s true.”
She rose up to look at him, her expression turning serious.
“I love you,” she said, the words like a promise. “For even longer than that.”
Gently, David took her wrist, and kissed her palm. “Now, let’s not make it a competition.”
“Wise. You know I’d win.”
“My dear,” he smiled against her hand, “I think I share this victory with you.”

Arctic Rose
It always is the same on these cold, clear nights. The Angel of Sky spreads his luminous wings, painting the aethers with shimmering tapestries of color. The creatures below pause their activities. The angel glimpses their smiles of wonder, hears their hushed whispers and sees their fingers point skyward. This is good. It gladdens him to see them looking up, even if the artistry he creates was never for them.
Some of them might know him as Sahaquiel, but that is not his name. It is merely his title. In prior epochs there were other Sahaquiels, other Angels of Sky. He is merely the latest to hold this office, and he prefers another, far older name for himself.
A name now spoken only by one.
He flies north, following Polaris. Below, the human settlements become fewer and farther between. The roads narrow and finally disappear as the horizon opens before him, crystalline beneath the blazing corona of verdant flame which fills the sky. The angel has outdone himself, he thinks. His lover cannot fail to appear tonight.
But patience is required, and the angel wishes he had more of it. Celestial entities should have little care for the passage of time, he thinks, yet he cannot force himself to settle. He fidgets under the weight of lost aeons until at last, in the far, far distance, a figure appears.
The Angel of Sky would have recognized him even without the battered sword he grips in his bloodied hand. Would have recognized him even without the trail of spent gray feathers that drift from his wings like wind-blown ashes. Would have recognized him even if the pristine snow beneath his feet did not turn blood-red with every step he takes.
This angel is known to humankind as Simikiel. They speak of him in whispers, scrawling his name in Enochian script using their own blood for ink, hoping that their self-inflicted pain might serve to appease him. They summon him to their causes, petitioning him to right the wrongs they believe they’ve been dealt, and Simikiel obliges—for a price.
A terrible price, for Simikiel is the Angel of Vengeance, and his sword cuts both ways.
But the Angel of Sky does not call him Simikiel, nor does he summon him for any purpose other than himself. He hurries across the ice, no longer caring about the supposed virtues of patience, and meets his visitor halfway. He extends both hands, palms empty, and waits. His visitor pauses with a few steps between them.
"Nice work," he says, nodding toward the dancing curtains of light. "Looks like you've been busy."
His voice—which humans describe as 'resonant,' 'cutting' and 'bleak,' likening it to an Arctic wind or a surgeon's knife—carries a faint lift, as if the speaker truly is amused. He seems to be looking at the sky, but it is hard to know what he sees with the upper half of his face being an empty void. Rare is the mortal who can look upon that void without cowering in abject terror. But the Angel of Sky relaxes, certain now that he has been recognized.
“It seems you have been busy, too,” he murmurs with sorrow, noting that the blood-caked hands have yet to clasp his own.
“They've been keeping me occupied, yes.” The Angel of Vengeance runs an index-digit along his sword-edge as if testing it. A drop of scarlet falls to the snow, and a single barbed rose unfurls, blooming in the frozen air with unexpected sweetness. “Humankind finds no end of reasons to summon me.”
It is a rote greeting by now; a script they have followed on countless nights.
"If only they would change," the Angel of Sky muses. "If only we could inspire them to evolve beyond their petty cruelties..." He trails off as the Angel of Vengeance smiles.
It is a terrible sight, one that could freeze the blood of mortals and send them scurrying, but the Angel of Sky does not flinch. He knows the other far too well. Recognizes his gestures, his mannerisms—and yes, his beauty—even in his current form. The office to which he has been assigned as punishment for his rebellion might have twisted his outward appearance, but inside he remains himself, his grace and majesty unchanged.
"What if they did evolve?" the Angel of Vengeance queries. "Do you imagine anything would change for us?"
"Surely it would have to," the Angel of Sky responds. "Our work here would be done."
"Yours, maybe. But you are bound to this mud-ball by choice. Not as a punishment for..." the Angel of Vengeance pauses, thin lips curling in a bitter smirk, "bad behavior."
“It has been too long!” the Angel of Sky exclaims in sudden anger. “You have been punished long enough.”
"Careful," the Angel of Vengeance chides. "Daring to question the wisdom of Primus or his minions can get you in, shall we say, a world of trouble." He chuckles coldly. "But you could return. I'm sure he'd take you back."
True enough. The Thirteen who guarded the throne of Primus had made that more than clear. If the Angel of Sky were to return to their bosom, they would see it as a form of repentance. But he could not repent his love.
"I will not leave without you. You know that."
"All too well, my love." The Angel of Vengeance wraps his scarlet fingers around the hilt of his sword, leaning on it as a sage might upon a staff. A gust of wind lifts the snow, frosting the rose's thorns as the two of them fall silent.
It is always the same on these cold, clear nights, a stalemate they've reached many times. The Angel of Sky suspects they've had this debate so often that it has reshaped the crystalline structure of the snow itself, and that if its geometry could be translated to sound, the sound that would emerge would be that of two angels arguing. The Angel of Sky does not wish to argue tonight, and so he plucks the rose, allowing its bittersweet perfume to waft between them.
“This," he says. "This is the essence of your truth. Not what they say it is, and not this false image that the duties of your office have imprinted upon you."
“And you can still see that?”
“Of course. I will always see your truth.”
This earns him another smile. A softer smile, and one which the Angel of Sky is certain no one else has ever seen. It transforms the face of Simikiel into that which he remembers from time long past. “I will not bow," the Angel of Vengeance warns. "I will not go to Primus begging for mercy or forgiveness, nor will I play Unicron's games anymore. If that means I remain earthbound, so be it."
“Yes," the Angel of Sky replies, hearing in those words an echo of his own truth. "I know."
"I cannot change what I am, even for you," the Angel of Vengeance adds, his tone softening.
The Angel of Sky lowers his gaze. "And I would not want you to."
This is only part of the terrible price he must pay for his love, and yet. When bloodied fingers curl between his own, he knows it is worth it. Their hands mesh, locking tight. The rose is crushed between their joined palms, a blood oath made and remade without need for words, and the snow beneath them erupts in a riot of night-blooming flowers.
It is then that the feathers fall from both sets of wings, luminous and ashen swirling together in the dark. As they settle together in their fragrant, living berth, they are both transformed. Armored frames gleam in the starlight as they move together, relearning and remembering.
We are not truly angels. Our kind only seems as such in the eyes of mortals, but we are a people like any other, a people with loves and sorrows and follies, only on a grander scale than humankind could possibly imagine.
In the long contentment that follows, the Angel of Vengeance whispers his lover’s name—his true name. Skyfire.
And the Angel of Sky whispers back. Starscream.
"There is another way," Skyfire adds, perhaps an eternity later. "A third way."
"Conquest?" Starscream rolls lazily to stretch across Skyfire's chest, his sharp chin pillowed on Skyfire's canopy. "It's been tried. I can report firsthand that it's the kind of rebellion that can get you kicked out of both hell and heaven.”
“I am aware.”
“So what are you suggesting?"
Skyfire studies the sky above, observing its shifting veils of color. The yellow and green indicate oxygen; atomic nitrogen makes blue, while purple is created by molecular nitrogen. He knows all of this, somehow, as if remembering it from some distant world long past, and something shifts. Solidifies, as if time itself has been reshaped.
"Humanity," he says, sensing the opening of a gate. It is as if their loving has altered the fabric of reality itself. "Their dreams and imagination." Skyfire pauses to absorb this sudden understanding. "That is a world to which we could escape, and neither the above nor the below would be able to reach us. We would remain earthbound, yes. But we would also be free."
Scarlet optics study him narrowly. "Nice thought, but—" A curl of wind-driven snow materializes into a scroll, which a bloodied hand snatches from midair. "Saved by a summons," Simikiel says, reading it over with a smirk. "Humans are marvelously imaginative where it comes to dreaming up ways to do each other in. Would you like to hear what this one says?"
Skyfire shakes his head. "I know they're not perfect, but—"
"They're little monsters." Simikiel rises. “But this was fun. Let's do it again soon.”
The gate is closing, and Skyfire… Sahaquiel… can feel it. He scrambles up, recapturing Simikiel's hand. "I have seen another side of them. When I paint the skies and they look up to glimpse something beyond their earthly concerns, I see light in them, and wonder. We could find the ones who are like that. We could…"
"Could what, Skyfire?" Simikiel's tone is challenging, yet he gazes at Skyfire as if seeing him for the first time. As if he really wants to hear his answer.
"Rather than merely entertaining them, as I do," Skyfire says carefully, "or helping them to destroy each other, as you do, wouldn't it be better for us to teach them?"
Simikiel shrugs. "Someone else will do our jobs if we don't. There will always be an Angel of Vengeance."
"Of course there will, but it doesn't have to be you. And it doesn't mean they can't learn." Skyfire is certain that his love would see them differently if he could meet the ones who are not simply trying to use him. "Please." His hand tightens. "Trust me."
Scarlet optics meet his. There is the faintest hint of a nod, a returning pressure of fingers squeezing his own, and then they are gone. They vanish in a swirl of brilliance and darkness in the cold air. All that remains is a scarlet trail across the snow which ends, very suddenly, in a bed of impossible roses.
* * *
A young woman sits up in bed, hands gripping her comforter. The dream had been so resonant. She still feels it in every sinew, every cell of her body. Its lingering sweetness hums in her veins, and although she is aware that it was only a dream, she also knows it was so much more. That something has changed, and she is not quite the person she was the night before when she fell asleep.
Her dream-diary is beside her bed, along with a pen. She opens the book to a fresh page and writes the date: July 28, 1987. Below, she begins: I dreamed about my dear friend Starscream last night…
She fills page after page, knowing there are few people she will ever be able to tell. When every last detail has been recorded, she gets up and goes to her desk. The typewriter is an ancient, cast-iron behemoth, the kind that shakes the table when you type. She finds a sheet of paper and loads it into the machine.
Then sits, fingers poised trembling above the keys.
She speaks his name in a whisper, half afraid to commit it to paper. It feels like an evocation, except she is the one who has been summoned. The task before her, if she chooses to accept it, is to put right the wrongs she believes he's been dealt. And so, at last, she writes his name, answering the call. The story begins.
Written for SkyStarWeek 2020. This story is for Day Five: AU of Choice. I chose angels. Many thanks to my editor, Biting Moopie, for emergency beta services, and to @overlordraax for organizing this wonderful (and much needed) celebration of my OTP!

Chemical Potential (9/11)
Summary: Slightly homesick and stressed about her abysmal chemistry grade, Rose Tyler meets quirky James Smith, the boy who sits in front of her in their chemistry class. They become fast friends as James makes it his personal mission to help Rose get through the semester.
Ten x Rose University AU
This chapter: ~5800 words, teen
Notes: This was written for the lovely @thegreenfairy13 as part of the @dwsecretsanta gift exchange. Also tagging @doctorroseprompts.
There’e going to be one more chapter and an epilogue after this one :)

Rose woke up in the middle of the night to something solid landing on her chest. Heart hammering, she jolted upright and blinked wildly, batting at the thing on top of her. Her fingers met with sleek fur as an annoyed mrrrp sounded from her stomach and two luminous eyes glared at her accusingly.
“Jesus,” Rose sighed. “You scared me, Pip.”
Pippin crawled back onto her chest and began the process of finding a comfortable spot. More than once, his arse was shoved into her face and she leaned away from it. He eventually plopped down and began purring contentedly, the vibrations of his body making Rose drowsy.
Until she remembered where she was, and that she’d invited herself to sleep over at James’s house without his permission.
Her gaze shot to the couch, but it was empty. Rose plopped her head back against the recliner. Well, at least he hadn’t woken her up to toss her out of his house. Though he was far too polite to do that anyway.
Rose sighed, but settled back into her chair. She was tired and it was still dark out. She might as well try to get a bit more sleep before having to see James and give him an awkward apology.
She reached up to rub Pippin’s soft little head, then pulled her blanket closer around her shoulders. No. Not blanket. Blankets. Plural.
Glancing down, Rose realized that she had somehow become covered by the blanket James had been sleeping under mere hours earlier. Something twisted inside of her at the thought that James had covered her with a blanket.
She inhaled deeply and hummed when she realized her new blanket smelled like him. She tucked her hands under her chin, bringing the blanket with them, and she fell back to sleep surrounded by James’s comforting scent.
When she awoke again, the sky outside was a light gray color. While the recliner wasn’t the most comfortable place to sleep, Rose felt well enough rested that the day wouldn’t be a sleepy struggle.
She froze when she realized she’d awoken because she’d heard footsteps. She closed her eyes and stilled, pretending to sleep. Moments later, James paused at the entrance to the living room. Slowly, she cracked open one eyelid. Through her lashes, she saw him standing a few feet away, just looking at her.
A thrill of… something shot through her. She was a little self-conscious, but at the same time, she’d watched James sleep the previous night, so turnabout was fair play. (Never mind the fact that he didn’t know she’d been watching him. Then again, James didn’t know that she knew he was watching her now either.)
He began to move closer, and she shut her eye. Her body was far too tense to pass as sleeping, but she hoped James didn’t notice. She was hyper-aware of him so that when he rested his hand on her arm, she wasn’t entirely surprised.
“Rose.” His voice was soft and gruff from sleep. His hand rubbed up and down from her shoulder to her elbow. Even though their skin was separated by two blankets and her sweatshirt, goosebumps still prickled across her body. “Rose. Wake up. Ro-oooose.”
Her heart clenched at the way he crooned her name, his lilting voice turning it into two syllables. A pang of longing went through her as she wished she could wake up every morning like this. Well, perhaps not exactly like this—she’d prefer a bed to a recliner—but she wanted to wake up with him.
She made a show of slowly beginning to stir, and she was pleased when he kept rubbing her arm. She never wanted him to stop.
When she cracked open her eyes, all coherent thought left her mind. His face was inches away; her eyes skated across the freckles that speckled his cheeks and nose. Then they darted down his lips, which were pulled in a lovely little smile that made her tingle all over.
She smiled sleepily. “Morning.”
“Morning.”
But soon embarrassment cleared her head and warmed her ears and cheeks. “Sorry for sort of inviting myself to spend the night. But you were asleep and I didn’t want to wake you, and I didn’t want you to wake up alone, so I just sort of…” She broke off with a shrug.
“I don’t mind. I…” His cheeks pinkened. “I’m glad you stayed.”
They looked at each other shyly for a minute before James stood up.
“We should get moving. Want breakfast first, or would you prefer me to take you back to your flat right away?”
“Oh, it’s okay. I can call for an Uber.”
James shook his head. “Please. I insist. After all you did for me yesterday… Please?”
Rose nodded, then said, “Breakfast would be great.” She rooted around on the floor where she’d set her phone last night. “What time is it?”
“Seven,” he answered, right as she hit the home button and saw 06:58 flash on the screen. “You’ve still got some time until you need to be at the school for your Shakespeare class.”
Silly though it was, Rose was pleased that James remembered when she had classes. And that he was thoughtful enough to wake her with plenty of time to spare so she could go back to her flat for a shower and a change of clothes first. She hadn’t relished the idea of spending the day in the same clothes as yesterday.
“Toast and eggs all right?” James asked as Rose lowered the footrest of the recliner.
“Yep.”
She followed him into the kitchen, where Pippin and Merry were crunching over their bowls of food. James moved around the space, gathering a frying pan, eggs, and butter.
“I’ll mind the toast,” Rose offered when he grabbed a loaf of bread from the pantry.
Together, they worked to make a nice but simple breakfast. Rose slathered butter and raspberry jam over their toast while James expertly fried and flipped the eggs, not breaking the yolks as Rose often accidentally did.
The conversation was sparse as they ate, though it was by no means uncomfortable. On the contrary, Rose was perfectly at ease as she sopped up the remnants of the runny egg yolk with the last bit of her toast, not caring that her fingers got messy.
James had left the crusts on his plate and was cradling his nearly-empty mug of coffee in his long fingers.
“I’ll cut the crusts off for you next time like my cousin does for her five-year-old,” Rose teased.
James stuck his tongue out at her, but his cheeks had turned pink. He didn’t look embarrassed though—in fact, he was smiling faintly—and Rose shrugged it off.
“When you’ve finished your tea, we can leave,” he said, gulping down the last of his coffee.
He began to clear up their dishes while Rose drank her tea as quickly as possible without scalding her mouth. Then he walked her to his car, his hand on her lower back, and drove her home.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” James promised, idling outside of her building. “Thank you so much, Rose. I—” He hesitated, his mouth working silently for a moment, before he eventually said, “I’m incredibly lucky to have you as my friend.”
Rose wished he was out of his car so she could give him a hug. “I’m lucky to have you as my friend, too. If you’re ever having a bad day and want to talk or just hang out, let me know. I’ll always be here for you, James.”
His responding grin was dazzling, making her breath catch. With a cheerful wave and a two-fingered half-salute, James pulled away from her building and drove off.
oOoOo
After that, something shifted almost imperceptibly between herself and James. Rose couldn’t put her finger on what had changed; all she knew is that things seemed more intimate between them.
They used the impending approach of the third exam and finals week as an excuse to study more often, but their study sessions frequently found them talking about non-chemistry-related things.
They shared pieces of their pasts and talked about their futures. Rose’s heart raced with delight and anxiety when they both talked about the following semester and the rest of their time at the university as though it was set in stone that she would be around to see it. And as though they planned to still spend time together.
She appreciated his confidence, and used it to attempt to kindle her own fledgling optimism. Rose was doing superbly on all of her assignments and lab work; any time she showed James a new score that was near-perfect, he beamed at her as though she was holding a winning lottery ticket and scooped her in for a congratulatory hug.
It was hard to not feel hopeful, especially when the Excel spreadsheet of her chemistry grades kept changing, projecting that she needed a lower and lower score on her final exam to get a passing grade in the class.
“You are doing so well with this unit, Rose,” James praised on their last study session before the Thanksgiving break. “You’re amazing! Look at this!” He took her quiz from her and waved it in front of her nose, as though she hadn’t been staring at the circled 95% at the top. “Amazing!”
“Finally some of this seems to be making sense,” Rose said, still grinning with pride. They were in the final few chapters of the class, learning about molecular geometries and shapes and how things were bonded together, something she’d been worried about until she realized her artistic background would help her immensely with visualizing three-dimensional orientations of molecules.
“This is more than making sense. This is understanding. You’re getting it, Rose. You’re truly understanding what’s going on.” He then pulled a sour expression and whined, “You’re rendering me obsolete!”
Rose rolled her eyes and nudged her elbow into his ribs. “Oh shut up. I’m still going to need your amazing brain to help me get that 62% I need on the final. Besides, I’ve grown quite fond of you; you’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
James blushed, but smiled.
“Right, so I think that’s enough studying for today,” Rose said. “It’s a holiday, which means no thinking at all for the next few days.”
“I’m not sure that’s exactly what’s supposed to happen during break,” James argued.
“Is too. What time should I get to yours on Thursday?”
James pressed the tip of his tongue to the backs of his teeth as he gazed at a point above and beyond her shoulder. “Hmm… It’s gonna be more of a late lunch than an actual dinner. So probably around two or three?”
“D’you want help cooking?” Rose asked, remembering past Christmases where her mother and various relatives all worked nearly-nonstop in the kitchen before the meal. “I can get there earlier. I don’t mind. I’d be eager to see the whole process of Thanksgiving.”
“Really, it’s just like Christmas,” James said. “Turkey goes in first, then the sides are made at different times.”
Rose tried not to let her disappointment show as she forced a nod. James’s eyes went a bit wide.
“But it’d be really nice to have some help,” he said quickly. “I’d love for you to come earlier. It’d be nice to have an extra set of hands.”
“If you don’t want me there…”
“I do,” he said firmly. “Come by in the morning. Say… nine or ten?”
“Sounds good,” Rose said, and she gathered her school bags and headed to her flat.
The university had closed for the holiday beginning on Wednesday, and Rose spent the day catching up on all of the chores and errands she had been putting off. She cleaned every inch of her home and began to browse the Internet for Christmas gift ideas.
As the evening approached, Rose sent James a text. “Need/want me to bring anything tomorrow?”
His reply came back immediately.
Just yourself.
Btw, want me to pick you up?
Bus routes are few and far between on holidays. And Uber rates are expensive.
Rose chewed on her lip, trying to decide. On one hand, he was right; using public transportation tomorrow would be a hassle. But on the other, she didn’t want to inconvenience James by having him drive all the way to her flat only to turn right around and go back home again.
Seriously, I don’t mind. What are best mates for, anyway?
“For living vicariously through your cat babies,” she teased.
Rose Tyler, you wound me.
“Oh, you know I love you.” Rose froze at the natural response, then quickly deleted the words before she could accidentally send the text. Instead, she typed, “You know I’m kidding. And yeah, if you really don’t mind, getting a lift from you would be great.”
Excellent. I shall see you tomorrow around nine-ish.
Also. It’s gonna be a long day tomorrow. And as we’ve just established, Uber rates are insane.
So if you want to spend the night at mine, you’re more than welcome to.
If you want.
“Mate-date sleepover?” Rose hesitated, then added the winking emoji and sent the message.
Small dots popped up on her phone, but they disappeared seconds later. Then they reappeared. This happened half a dozen times, and Rose was about to reboot her phone, thinking it was glitching, when it buzzed in her hand.
Exactly! He’d added a grinning emoji.
She would have traded her soul to know what he’d been typing and deleting for a full minute.
“Sounds great. See you tomorrow!”
oOoOo
Preparing dinner with James was magical. They worked seamlessly around each other, checking on the turkey and basting it, boiling potatoes, cooking veggies, and occasionally stealing pieces of the various fruit pies to sample.
It was as though they were always meant to be doing this. Hosting holidays together.
James was in a tight pair of jeans and a snug t-shirt that showed off his lithe body. Rose stared openly at the flex and ripple of his muscles as he worked. His forearms. His pecs. His shoulders. His back.
Her body ached to touch him, to wrap her arms around him and press herself against him until there was not even the slightest sliver of space between them. She wanted to know how his body moved with hers. She wanted to know where her hands would settle as they kissed. She wanted to know where his would settle.
“I’m sure the potatoes aren’t that interesting,” James said, bumping his hip into hers. That made the heat in her belly flare sharply. “Thinking deep thoughts?”
Only about how much I want to snog you. And maybe shag you.
“I truly am as dull as you said. Boiling potatoes are the height of fascination,” she said dryly.
He giggled, a giddy sound from high in his throat. She loved that sound. She wanted to hear it every day, wanted to be the person who made him make that sound.
He stepped closer to her and stabbed a fork into the potatoes. The warmth from his body radiated into hers, sending a delicious shiver down her spine.
“Still needs some time,” he murmured, his mouth right beside her ear. His breath was hot and he was so, so close now.
And before she could respond, his lips landed on the side of her neck. She hummed low in her throat and tilted her head to the side, giving him more room. He took advantage of it and began pressing delicate kisses along the arch of her jaw. She lifted her hand and threaded her fingers through his hair to hold him in place. Not that he was going anywhere.
“James,” she breathed.
“Rose,” he replied. She felt him smirk against her, then his teeth scraped across her skin.
She shuddered in his arms, then turned. A cocky grin was on his lips, but it slipped when she lifted herself onto her toes and yanked him down for a kiss. A real, proper, full-on kiss. He sighed into her mouth and melted into her.
Rose wrapped her arms around his shoulders to hold him close. Finally, she thought. Oh, God, finally. His lips were soft and a little dry, and they moved perfectly with hers. They found a slow, lazy rhythm and kept it, unhurried.
His arms draped loosely around her waist, hugging her gently to him. One of her hands went to his jaw, his cheek, holding his face tenderly while her other hand fisted into his hair. She enjoyed the motions of his jaw as they kissed.
When she scraped her nails across his scalp, he let out a knee-weakening groan that made her core begin to throb.
With a noise that was a cross between a growl and a hiss, Rose walked him backwards a few steps until he collided against the wall. He smiled beneath her mouth, but let her pin him to the wall.
His hands dipped under the hem of her shirt so his fingers could map out the expanse of her back. She shuddered as his fingers caressed her skin, then settled at the base of her spine. His fingers clenched and released, mirroring the motion of his mouth against hers.
He was a fantastic kissing partner. His lips pulled and gave way, dominated and submitted. His breathing was ragged and he kept letting out tiny, needy noises that made her press herself closer. Their hips were flush, and they were rocking and grinding and writhing together, stoking the fire that was roaring through her veins.
The oven beeped at them, and James faded away from her, taking the solid length of his body away from her touch.
“No,” she whimpered, grasping for him.
He grinned at her, looking entirely put together and composed while she thought she might scream with frustration.
The oven continued blaring.
Only it wasn’t the oven.
Rose’s eyes snapped open. Her body was hot and tense, and an unbearable ache throbbed between her legs.
“Fuck,” she grumbled, then she fumbled for her phone to silence her alarm.
She flopped back down onto her bed and rubbed the heels of her hands into her eyes. That dream had felt so real. Now, not only was she turned on and alone, but her chest twinged with sorrow and longing that she’d never actually kissed James. Or had him kiss her while holding her like she was the most important person in his world.
“Fuck,” she repeated. She swung her legs off the side of her bed and got up to take a long, cold shower.
James arrived a few minutes after nine. Rose carried her overnight bag down to his car, then flung it into the back seat and slid into the passenger’s seat.
When they got to his home, Rose chucked her bag into the spare bedroom that she was desperately trying not to call “hers”. Then they went to the kitchen to begin food preparations.
There wasn’t much to do at first, and Rose boosted herself onto the countertop to watch James season the turkey and pop it into the oven. She took the time to observe him. His jeans weren’t as tight as they’d been in her dream, but they still gave her a very generous view of his arse. He was wearing a jumper though, which, to Rose’s disappointment, hid the movement of his upper body from her. It was probably for the best.
“You all right?”
Rose snapped her gaze up from where she’d been rotating between ogling his bum and his exposed forearms. Her face heated, but she ignored it and instead forced a smile.
“Fine,” she said. “Just a little tired. I didn’t sleep all that well last night.”
“Feel free to make yourself a cuppa tea,” he said. “If that’ll help.”
Her smile turned genuine, and she hopped down from her perch to make tea for the both of them. It was nearly automatic, the way she dumped milk into the mugs then added honey and a lemon wedge to hers and several scoops of sugar to his. But when she turned, he was looking at her with a soft, unreadable expression.
“What?” she asked, self-conscious.
He shook his head faintly. “I… Nothing… It’s just… You remembered how I take my tea.”
Rose frowned. “Well, yeah.” Then she shot him a teasing smirk and said, “It’s milk and half a bag of sugar. Not that hard to remember.”
He giggled her favorite giggle, looking absolutely delighted. Her chest felt warm but slightly hollow, and it took everything in her to not slam him against the wall and snog the breath out of him.
“What time are your other guests going to be arriving?” Rose asked. “And how many people are coming?”
“Anywhere from noon to three,” James said, shrugging. “I gave very loose, vague timelines for today. It’s going to be a low key gathering. And at last count, there were gonna be eight other people, in addition to you and me.”
While they waited for James’s guests, they broke out a board game and passed the time playing Risk. They finished two rounds before the doorbell rang. Rose cleaned up the game pieces while James greeted his guest and let them inside.
“Rose, this is Jack. Jack, this is Rose.”
Rose glanced over and saw a handsome, dark-haired man grinning at her from the entry to the living room. He was quite fit, and Rose took a moment to rake her eyes up and down his toned, muscled body. She flushed when she realized he’d caught her looking and was now giving her a once-over.
“Hi,” he said with a wink and flirtatious smirk. He stuck out his hand for her to shake. “Jack Harkness.”
“Jack,” James said, frowning. “Don’t.”
“I’m just saying hello,” he said innocently.
Rose bit her lip around a chuckle as she walked towards them and grasped Jack’s extended hand. His grip was warm and firm, and after he shook her hand, he brought it to his lips for a kiss.
James glared at Jack’s back, but he turned and stalked to the front door when the bell rang, heralding a new guest.
Over the next hour and a half, all of James’s guests arrived, pulling him in and out of the kitchen to greet them. Rose assured him she didn’t mind; after all, it wasn’t that hard to boil potatoes. Some of the guests entered the kitchen to offer their help (especially Jack), and Rose made idle conversation with them as she worked on the mashed potatoes.
“I feel bad, leaving you to do the cooking. You’re not even the official host,” James said when he realized she’d finished the potatoes and had the veggies heating up.
“I told you, it’s all right,” she said. “Besides, if I didn’t want to help, I wouldn’t have offered.”
James gave her a relieved smile and squeezed her forearm in thanks.
“Though I’m making you carve the turkey. I don’t feel like getting my hands that dirty.”
James stuck his tongue out at her, but conceded.
The ones who hadn’t ventured into the kitchen on their own, James brought to introduce to Rose. She worked hard on remembering everyone’s names and how James knew them, but the information faded fairly quickly.
The meal wasn’t as awkward as Rose had thought it would be. Despite only having met them a couple hours ago, she managed to make easy conversation with everyone.
Everyone but James, that is. She’d initially planned to sit beside him at the table for dinner, and had put her glass of wine next to his to informally reserve her seat. But when she’d disappeared to the kitchen to help James bring the platters of food out, a blonde woman had sat in her place. She remembered this woman’s name: Reinette. She was the French girl who had somehow landed herself in James’s intermediate French class.
Oh well, she thought to herself as she plucked her wine glass from the table.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” the woman said, frowning. “I didn’t realize someone was sitting here.”
“It’s all right,” Rose said brightly, moving to the opposite end of the table.
Minutes later, everyone was seated and passing around the dishes of food. The conversation was steady as everyone worked through the heaps of food on their plate. Jack had ended up sitting beside Rose, and they talked to each other quite a bit.
Rose couldn’t help but notice that Reinette and James were engaged in conversation for the entire meal. He was laughing and beaming at her, angling his body towards her to give her his full attention.
Something hard and uncomfortable dropped into the pit of her stomach as she watched Reinette cover his forearm with her hand, squeezing and rubbing his arm. And James was leaning closer to her touch, which made the feeling worse.
Rose pulled her gaze away from them and tried not to let her hurt show. How had she never seen James interacting with another friend until now? What she’d mistaken for flirting and attraction must have just been his overly-affectionate personality. All the times he’d grabbed her hand or let her take his were normal for him. Nothing special.
She utterly ignored James and his dinner companion for the rest of the meal, choosing instead to throw herself head-first into the conversation around her. Someone had turned the television on and had flipped it to a sports channel, where an American football game was playing.
“Do you have any idea what’s going on?” Jack asked her, nudging his foot against hers.
“Not really,” she admitted. “Er… I know they have to take the ball from one end to the other. And they get different amounts of points depending how they did it. But that’s about it.”
Jack laughed good-naturedly at her, as did a few of the other people sitting around her, and he began explaining the basic rules to her.
Everybody took their plates to the kitchen after the meal was over and stacked their dishes in the sink, per James’s request.
“I’ll load the dishwasher later,” he’d said.
Stuffed and sleepy, Rose joined a few people on the floor of the living room to continue watching the football game. There were cheers and boos at seemingly every play, and Rose found herself joining in the longer she watched.
Meanwhile, James had settled onto the sofa with Reinette plopped beside him. To make room for another two people on the couch, they were pressed so tightly together that Reinette was nearly in James’s lap.
Rose continued to ignore them, just as she ignored the acidic taste in her mouth at the sight of them. Instead, she leaned against Jack and sipped her drink as she continued to watch the game.
Try as she might, Rose couldn’t entirely block out James’s conversation with Reinette. They talked about politics, both American and European, and the places they’d travelled to. Rose hadn’t realized how much of the world James had seen.
“My parents loved to travel,” James told Reinette wistfully. “We vacationed every summer in a different country. When I moved with my aunt to America, we would take vacations to various states.”
“Why did you move with your aunt?” Reinette asked, furrowing her delicate brow.
“Er… my parents passed away,” James said awkwardly.
“Oh!” Reinette clapped her hand to her mouth. “I’m very sorry to hear that.”
She wrapped her arms around one of his, hugging it tightly to her breast before she leaned up to brush a kiss to his cheek.
That was when Rose stood up and stalked into the kitchen under the guise of getting more wine.
Her chest ached as she poured herself her third glass of the afternoon and downed half of it in one go.
Seeing James with Reinette made it so heartbreakingly obvious that she was way below his league. He and Reinette were able to talk about travel and politics and other sophisticated things much more eloquently than she ever could.
Somehow she’d managed to convince herself that James had romantic feelings for her when instead he was simply an affectionate person. She should have realized she wasn’t anything special to James, and she’d been stupid to think she was.
She’d gotten her hopes up that maybe he might be a little bit in love with her. Now her hopes were crashing down and shattering at her feet, and it hurt.
Working on autopilot, Rose set her newly-emptied glass of wine to the side and moved to the pile of dishes in the sink. Trying to convince herself she wasn’t avoiding James, she gave everything a cursory rinse then arranged them neatly into the dishwasher.
It didn’t matter; he found her five minutes later.
“Rose!” He sounded like he was smiling hugely, and she irrationally wanted to throw a spoon at him. “There you are! Thought I’d lost you.”
“Nope,” she said, trying to infuse emotion into her flat voice. “Just washing up. Figured I’d get a load started before the food was too caked on.”
He sidled up beside her and bumped his hip into hers.
“You’re making me feel like a shoddy host,” he teased. “First making all the sides, now doing the washing up.” Then he went over to the opposite side of the dishwasher to help her finish.
“You can go back to your guests,” Rose murmured, carefully arranging the utensils.
“No thanks. I need a break.” He paused, then lowered his voice and admitted, “I’ve only just escaped.”
Rose’s head snapped up to look at him. He was scrubbing his hand at the back of his neck with a sheepish grimace on his face.
“Escaped?”
He loosed a long breath then said carefully, “Reinette’s been… very friendly. She’s been hanging off my arm all day. I’ve barely been able to chat with my other friends. And I’ve tried to hint to her that I’m not interested, but…” He shrugged and turned to root under his sink for dishwasher detergent.
Rose’s heart lifted itself out of her stomach and back into her chest.
“Am I a rubbish host if I hide in here for the rest of the day?” James asked, tossing the detergent pod into the dishwasher.
“Hmmm…” Rose tapped her finger against her chin. “Probably.”
James rolled his eyes, but a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
“You can sometimes be too friendly for your own good,” Rose said.
“How can I politely tell her I’m not interested?” he asked with a sigh. “I thought I’d been obvious.”
“As an observer, it didn’t look like you were uninterested,” Rose supplied.
James’s jaw slackened and a look of horror crossed his face. His cheeks went red as he began to stammer, “Wait… but… she… I… Rose!”
“I’m just sayin’,” Rose laughed.
“Really?” he squeaked. “‘Cos I’m not. Interested, that is. I’m not at all interested in her. Not in the least!”
Rose giggled at him, amused by how flustered he was. But she couldn’t help the happiness and relief bubbling up inside of her.
James pouted. “Well what about you and Jack?” he asked petulantly.
Rose stopped laughing. “What d’you mean, me and Jack?”
“You two have been very… cozy today.”
“He’s a nice guy,” she countered, watching James carefully.
“Yeah, he is. I just… I feel like I should warn you. He goes through women very quickly. Men, too, as it were. Just so you know.”
James had his hands stuffed into his pockets, but Rose could see they were clenched into tight fists.
“Thanks for the warning, but I’m not interested,” she said.
James brightened. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” she said softly.
He beamed at her, and she couldn’t help but return it.
“In that case… I, er, was wondering… Do you… Would you like… I’d like to… Do you wanna maybe…”
“What are you two kids getting up to in here?”
James jumped a little, and he turned to glare at Jack. Rose didn’t know whether to be upset at Jack or to kiss him. While he’d been stuttering his way through fragmented sentences, judging by what they’d been discussing, Rose was fairly certain James was trying to ask her out on a date. If he was, she was thrilled, and hated Jack for interrupting. But a small part of her also wanted to flee from the room. There were still three and a half weeks left before she would know for certain whether or not she could stay at the university. With her luck, she’d start dating James only to find out she’d lost her scholarship.
“Oh, nothing. Cleaning up, that’s all,” Rose said brightly, hating the way James’s face fell then shuttered off.
“I saw your pile of board games, and a group of us wants to play something. There’s too many of us to play individually, so we’re pairing up. Do you two want in?”
“I do,” Rose answered.
“Brilliant! I still need a partner,” Jack said, waggling his eyebrows.
“I think you’d work well with Reinette,” James suggested. “If she still needs a partner.”
“I think she was hoping to pair up with you,” Jack said pointedly.
“No doubt,” James grumbled. But he stepped up beside Rose and rested his hand on her lower back. She nearly rolled her eyes at the possessive motion, but a larger part of her was thrilled. “I’ll be Rose’s partner.”
Jack eyed them both carefully, then winked and left the kitchen. Rose made to follow, but James gently gripped her forearm, stopping her.
“Rose. Before… I wanted to ask…”
“Stop,” she interrupted, her heart galloping. “If you’re asking what I think you’re asking, ask me after finals.”
James’s brow furrowed, confusion and hurt warring on his face.
“Please. Just wait and ask me after finals.” Rose tried to explain with her eyes, because she felt too pathetic to tell him how worried she still was about not being able to stay in school. And she didn’t know how to confess that she was already head-over-heels in love with him, and that it would kill her if she got a taste of a relationship with him only to have it yanked away.
To her eternal relief, a kernel of understanding dawned in his eyes, and his gaze softened. He reached out and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“After finals,” he agreed quietly.
Then he lifted her hands to his lips, planted a sweet, tender kiss to her knuckles, and guided her to the living room.

Start with a simple universe consisting only of two bodies, and the dynamics are easy: The bodies either orbit each other along stable elliptical paths, or they fly hyperbolically apart. Put in a third object, though, and all celestial hell breaks loose. This “three-body problem” was the one that vexed Henri Poincaré, who found that the dynamics of three objects in space (let alone the uncounted billions of hunks of mass making up the rest of the universe) are not described by any simple formula, despite the simplicity of the physical laws that govern them.
That’s only the beginning of dynamics, whose orbit (see what I did there?) now includes essentially any system whose behavior over time is controlled by a simple rule. The system could be a set of billiard balls on a table; the only rules are that a ball in motion tends to remain in motion in the same direction at the same speed, unless it encounters another ball or a wall, in which case it reflects. No friction, no spin, no nothing; and yet billiards displays the same richness and complexity as does the motion of the heavenly bodies.
Mathematicians care about this stuff not so much because we like sharking at the pool hall, but because billiards on a flat table (even more so if the table is three-dimensional) is a pretty decent model for the physics of a gas, each molecule a tiny hard ball whizzing around and bouncing off its fellows. The individual molecular billiards obey Newton’s laws of motion, so in principle we should be able to derive from scratch the way that gases behave. But we just can’t. Not yet. The dynamics are just too complicated. Even the case of one billiard—a gas with one molecule—is hard! (The analysis of one such one-billiard system is one of the remarkable results of Yakov Sinai, a dynamicist who won the $1 million Abel Prize this year.)
Dynamics doesn’t just apply to systems coming from the physical world. Instead of a configuration of billiard balls on a table, your system might be a number between 0 and 1. And the rule for evolution in time is even simpler than the physical ones: With each tick of the clock, you multiply your number by 2, and if what you get is bigger than 1, you subtract 1 to keep yourself within the desired range. Say you start with 0.2. Then the system develops like this:
0.2 0.4 0.8 0.6 0.2
And we’re right back where we started; the dynamics are periodic, tracing out the same path again and again like two bodies orbiting each other in an ellipse. But if you start with an irrational number, the process neverrepeats itself. The dynamics of the system recognize the arithmetic distinction between rational and irrational numbers! Elon Lindenstrauss of Hebrew University won a Fields in 2010 for dynamics of this kind, which has infiltrated the grand old temple of number theory, much to the classicists’ surprise. In fact, there’s hardly any part of math that hasn’t been injected with dynamics.
This brings us back to Mirzakhani, whose work expertly blends dynamics with geometry. Among other things, she studies billiards. But now, in a move very characteristic of modern mathematics, it gets kind of meta: She considers not just one billiard table, but the universe of all possible billiard tables. And the kind of dynamics she studies doesn’t directly concern the motion of the billiards on the table, but instead a transformation of the billiard table itself, which is changing its shape in a rule-governed way; if you like, the table itself moves like a strange planet around the universe of all possible tables.
This isn’t the kind of thing you do to win at pool, but it’s the kind of thing you do to win a Fields Medal. And it’s what you need to do in order to expose the dynamics at the heart of geometry; for there’s no question that they’re there. Dynamical systems have changed the nature of math, and they are here to stay.
RIP Maryam Mirzakhani

Platonic-Fullerene Chemistry and Global Economic Collapse
http://topicsofnote.com/?p=3920&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr
On the 18th of February 2011, the Cornel University Library declared a quantum biological discovery by two Chinese experts from universities in Mongolia. The scientists utilised mathematics to describe why proteins were folded in a weird way inside of DNA, in defiance of the 20th Century's scientific environment-look at.
An extract from the reserve entitled, Science-Artwork and Human Survival Technologies, revealed a 10 years previously by the Science-Art Investigate Centre of Australia, experienced predicted the discovery produced by Liaofu Luo and Jun Lu. An extract from the e book mentioning cellular membrane follows. "Evolutionary direction is delivered by the regularly modifying styles of the evolving protein, which when measured, demonstrates that it is transferring toward common infinity." This concept is in defiance of the Einsteinian entire world-look at.
The houses of the liquid crystal optic development of the mobile membrane, at nano-scale, are considered to perceive the existence of holographic truth. This awareness is transmitted to consciousness as a result of endorphins generating a Golden Signify sample recognition enjoyment, involving an electromagnetic approach (the Greek Wisdom As a result of Beauty principle). The modifying protein patterns are recognized to be expressing features of infinite fractal geometry, which, in historic Mesopotamia was called sacred geometry. The geometry's affiliation with the style of dwelling matters was taught to college students which includes Leonardo da Vinci, during the 15th Century by Fibbonacci and Pacioli, when they released Babylonian arithmetic to European civilisation.
Pacioli summed up this mathematical hyperlink to biology with his well known estimate"Like God, the Divine Proportion is constantly very similar to itself ", this is recognized currently to be an expression of the infinite residence of fractal logic. This sort of design geometry is observed in the design of residing matters, this kind of as pine-cones, sunflowers and pineapples. The Molecule of Emotion, learned in 1972 by Dr Candace Pert, evolves by raising the speed of its molecular motion as an infinite fractal expression. The Mesopotamian mathematics can now be joined to an emotional Platonic Greek science termed The science for ethical finishes. However, that specific science was derived, not from the Babylonian Mystery faculties, but from Mesopotamia's historical Egyptian Secret schools, as was learned by the mathematician, Buckminster Fuller.
Nanotechnology has discovered that the variance among Fuller's conclusions from the Egyptian faculties and the mathematical results by Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein, derived from the Babylonian universities, is critical. As Fuller famous, this change is about generating a choice concerning Utopia or Oblivion. Bertrand Russell's most popular essay, penned in 1904, entitled A Freeman's Worship, insisted we have to endure the continuous reign of chaos and despair affiliated with Einstein's world-perspective. Their shared entire world-look at held that the next legislation of thermodynamics, recognised also as the legislation of universal chaos, should often govern our scientific tradition. That law of program includes the science upholding world-wide financial rationalism.
Russell and Einstein insisted that when the universe ultimately radiated all of its electrical power out into cold place, then all life in the universe have to be destroyed. Russell referred to this depressing close to every little thing, as a "Universe in thermodynamic ruin." On the other hand, this strategy has been confirmed to be incorrect. The latest CERN experiment, published by the journal Character, showed that dying novae in the Milky Way despatched cosmic radiation via millions of yrs of area-time to affect the growth of lifetime on earth. This cosmic radiation from novae in the Milky Way will cause clouds on earth to develop rain. This discovery designed chaos in just the European carbon credit score financial system, which is now on the place of collapse. So much for international economic rationalism.
The loss of life of a dinosaur in historical jasper fields created a fatty acid liquid crystal soap, which, when uncovered to the very same cosmic radiation, commenced to turn into jasper crystals. The sacred geometries can be observed in this approach and mathematicians have released that the crystalline constructions variety infinite fractal logic statements related to ancient mathematical mythologies.
The state of mind of Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein could by no means have imagined that these kinds of a phenomenon could possibly exist. Their scientific environment-look at would never ever have recommended to them the likelihood of employing mathematics to discovery the pertinent physics legal guidelines liable for these a matter. To them, no scientific clarification of how sacred geometry may well account for the human mythical intuition that the dwelling approach proceeded towards infinity, would have been attainable. No versions of existence on earth, becoming affiliated with the workings of an infinite holographic universe, are allowed for beneath their dictum, which held that finally all lifestyle in the universe should be destroyed.
In 1990, the Australian Science-Artwork Investigation Centre's mathematician found the new existence power regulations, which was printed by the world's most significant technological research institute, IEEE-SPIE Milestone Sequence, as getting 1 of the good discoveries from 20th Century literature. The Einsteinian dying-would like legacy, governing Western culture's larger training program, simply prohibited mainstream science from investigating this discovery even further. In 1995 an worldwide peer evaluation evaluation of the discovery, beneath the auspices of the Institute for Essential Research in America, announced the discovery of the Centre's arithmetic as becoming applicable to new physics laws governing optimum organic expansion and progress by place-time. The Einsteinian entire world-check out can for that reason be considered to be cancerous.
We can achieve an perception into why Western lifestyle is destroying by itself, by evaluating the change amongst the worship of dominant religious deities of historical Babylon and of historical Egypt. Western arithmetic and physics connected the use of sacred geometries as belonging to...the mythical worship of the Babylonian Goddess Ishtar, the Goddess of sex and war. Betrand Russell in his autobiography, wrote, that for the duration of his adolescence he was pretty lonely and the only explanation that he did not commit suicide was his would like to understand more about how historical arithmetic have been joined to metaphysical philosophy.
In Russell's A History of Western Philosophy, he does seem to be to elevate the position of the Goddess Ishtar, although the use of sacred geometries to demonstrate her mythical existence are extremely complex. He did however, grow to be the most popular British advocate of 'free love', as was published inside his book entitled 'Marriage and Morals'. His appointment as a professor at the City Faculty of New York in 1940 was annulled under a court docket order, which regarded him morally unfit to train at the college. His 1st three marriages ended in sordid public disgrace, but his attitude to sexual behaviour seemed to be of less relevance through his fourth marriage in his declining yrs.
Bertrand Russell was a brave human being who acquired a Nobel Prize for his contributions towards free believed. His private intercourse life, linked with Babylonian mathematical myth on the other hand, did relate to Western scientific believed. This results in being evident when we examine Russell's conclusions to Buckminster Fuller's discoveries, which ended up related with the worship of ancient Egypt's mythical Goddess Maat.
Maat was the Goddess of truth of the matter and natural beauty who prevented the universe from reverting to chaos. In Russell's most well known essay, entitled A Freeman's Worship, he advocated the opposite, a despairing, soulless worship of chaos by itself, as outlined by Einstein's incorrect definition of universal chaos as becoming the Leading regulation of all science.
A comparison of the effects of intuitive mythology on the heath of Babylonian and historic Egyptian civilisations, reveals the enormity of the Russell-Einstein growth of Western science. A 1995 governmental report entitled Sexual attitudes, preferences and bacterial infections in Historical Egypt by Robert S Morton, reveals why world wide financial rationalism is essentially at the position of collapse. With 'modification', the Fullerene health care science proposed by the 1996 Nobel laureates in chemistry can reverse this threat to international humanity. A United Nations mandate guaranteeing that the administration of governments are to be guided by a Platonic-Fullerene professional medical ethos, would help save the day. Aristotle's idea of an moral professional medical science, for the health and fitness of the universe, would offer for his ennobling federal government developed to avoid the destruction of civilisation, to become a actuality.
Ennobling government, in which persons strove to turn out to be personally dependable for continuous moral steps, judged by an ethical healthcare science, would be capable to obtain the supra-systems that Fuller realised were innate within the Platonic Science for ethical ends. We can thank Pythagoras for his definition of religious liberty, which joined it to the mother nature of mild from his scientific tests at the historical Egyptian Secret educational facilities. Religious liberty is relevant to the electromagnet transmission of holographic recognition from the mobile membrane, the All Observing Eye, guiding human evolution. Thomas Jefferson experienced some intuition of this phenomenon when he depicted the Pythagorean notion of spiritual liberty on the Wonderful Seal of The us.
In the report about ancient Egypt society being guided by worship of Maat, Robert Morton discussed that ancient Egyptian mummy autopsies disclosed that the incidence of sexually transmitted disorders was very low when compared to other Mesopotamian civilisations. Youngsters were schooled in Maat's teachings of truth of the matter and justice up until finally the age of 12-14 a long time, when at puberty they turned grownup. Morton notes "the absence of any recognition of adolescence as we know and outline it". The report uncovered that "the construction functioned properly as a result of Ma'at and the social cement of the loved ones". Family members contentment, legitimate respect for motherhood, and a democratic existence inside their sort of govt, a profitable export sector with taxes compensated by pyramid design perform, and a deficiency of adolescence rebellion, appeared to define a culture that Morton regarded we may well well envy right now.
The sacred geometrical fantasy of the Egyptian intellect-established, fused mercy and compassion into the each day life of the populace, who required to be liable for ethical carry out in get to be judged suit for entry into an afterlife. Subsequent the collapse of the Egyptian 1st Kingdom, thanks to a extended drought, the persons of the second Kingdom fused the ethics of mercy, compassion and justice into the cloth of political regulation. Later Greek mathematicians added the virtue of Platonic like into their Atomistic Science of common really like. This is in contrast to the scientifically unbalanced thought of contemporary Democracy, in which unethical greed by people today, who do not sense any require to be held accountable for their actions, accelerates social chaos.
In the 5th Century Advert, the custodian of the Wonderful Library of Alexandria, the virgin mathematician, Hypatia, was murdered by a rioting Christian mob and the library's scrolls were burnt. St Augustine declared all the Mesopotamian sacred geometry mathematics to be the operate of the Devil, citing the Bible's description of the Excellent Whore of Babylon.
Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein grew up inside of a society ignorant of the reality that the living procedure was an expression of an infinite universal fractal evolutionary course of action. The more quickly that the United Nations establishes the new Platonic-Fullerene healthcare science to tutorial ennobling govt, the faster we can establish the human survival supra-systems from the misplaced Science for moral finishes.

At halfway point, SuperUROP scholars share their research results
MIT undergraduates are rolling up their sleeves to address major problems in the world, conducting research on topics ranging from nursing care to money laundering to the spread of misinformation about climate change — work highlighted at the most recent SuperUROP Showcase.
The event, which took place on the Charles M. Vest Student Street in the Stata Center in December 2019, marked the halfway point in the Advanced Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (better known as “SuperUROP”). The yearlong program gives MIT students firsthand experience in conducting research with close faculty mentorship. Many participants receive scholar titles recognizing the program’s industry sponsors, individual donors, and other contributors.
This year, 102 students participated in SuperUROP, with many of their projects focused on applying computer science technologies, such as machine learning, to challenges in fields ranging from robotics to health care. Almost all presented posters of their work at the December showcase, explaining research to fellow students, faculty members, alumni, sponsors, and other guests.
“Every year, this program gets more and more impressive,” says Anantha P. Chandrakasan, dean of the School of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “What’s especially noteworthy is the incredible breadth of projects and how articulate students are in talking about their work. Their presentation skills seem pretty remarkable.”
SuperUROP, administered by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), includes a two-term course, 6.UAR (Undergraduate Advanced Research), designed to teach students research skills, including how to design an experiment and communicate results.
“What’s different about SuperUROP [compared to other research opportunities offered to undergraduates] is the companion class that guides you through the necessary writing and speaking,” says Anis Ehsani, a senior majoring in EECS and mathematics, whose project centered on the geometry of drawing political districts. “If I want to pursue a research career, it’s nice to have those skills,” adds Ehsani, an MIT EECS/Nutanix SuperUROP scholar.
Beyond the lab and classroom
Participants present their work at showcases in the fall and spring, and they are expected to produce prototypes or publication-worthy results by the end of the year.
“All these presentations help keep us on track with our projects,” says Weitung Chen, an EECS junior whose project focuses on automating excavation for mining applications. He explains that the inspiration for his SuperUROP work was a real-world problem he faced when trying to build a startup in automated food preparation. Scooping tofu, it turns out, is surprisingly difficult to automate. At the showcase, Chen — an MIT EECS/Angle SuperUROP scholar — explained that he is trying to create a simulation than can be used to train machines to scoop materials autonomously. “I feel really accomplished having this poster and presentation,” he said.
Launched by EECS in 2012, SuperUROP has expanded across the Institute over the past several years.
Adam Berinsky, the Mitsui Professor of Political Science, is working with SuperUROP students for the first time this year, an experience he’s enjoying. “What’s really cool is being able to give undergraduates firsthand experience in real research,” he says. He’s been able to tap students for the computer science skills he needs for his work, while providing them with a deep dive into the social sciences.
Madeline Abrahams, an MIT/Tang Family FinTech SuperUROP scholar, says she especially appreciates the program’s flexibility: “I could explore my interdisciplinary interests,” she says. A computer science and engineering major who is also passionate about political science, Abrahams is working with Berinsky to investigate the spread of misinformation related to climate change via algorithmic aggregation platforms.
Nicholas Bonaker also enjoyed the freedom of pursuing his SuperUROP project. “I’ve been able to take the research in the direction I want,” says Bonaker, a junior in EECS, who has developed a new algorithm he hopes will improve an assistive technology developed by his advisor, EECS Associate Professor Tamara Broderick.
Exploring new directions in health care
Bonaker said he particularly values the health-care focus of his project, which centers on creating better communications software for people living with severe motor impairments. “It feels like I’m doing something that can help people — using things I learned in class,” says Bonaker. He is among this year’s MIT EECS/CS+HASS SuperUROP scholars, whose projects combine computer science with the humanities, arts, or social sciences.
Many of this year’s SuperUROP students are working on health-care applications. For example, Fatima Gunter-Rahman, a junior in EECS and biology, is examining Alzheimer’s data, and Sabrina Liu, an EECS junior and MIT EECS/Takeda SUperUROP scholar, is investigating noninvasive ways to monitor the heartrates of dental patients. Justin Lim, a senior math major, is using data analytics to try to determine the optimal treatment for chronic diseases like diabetes. “I like the feeling that my work would have real-world impact,” says Lim, an MIT EECS/Hewlett Foundation SuperUROP scholar. “It’s been very satisfying.”
Dhamanpreet Kaur, a junior majoring in math and computer science and molecular biology, is using machine learning to determine the characteristics of patients who are readmitted to hospitals following their discharge to skilled nursing facilities. The work aims to predict who might benefit most from expensive telehealth systems that enable clinicians to monitor patients remotely. The project has given Kaur the chance to work with a multidisciplinary team of professors and doctors. “I find that aspect fascinating,” says Kaur, also an MIT EECS/Takeda SuperUROP scholar.
As attendees bustled through the two-hour December showcase, some of the most enthusiastic visitors were industry sponsors, including Larry Bair ’84, SM ’86, a director at Advanced Micro Devices. “I’m always amazed at what undergraduates are doing,” he says, noting that his company has been sponsoring SuperUROPs for the last few years.
“It’s always interesting to see what’s going on at MIT,” says Tom O’Dwyer, an MIT research affiliate and the former director of technology at Analog Devices, another industry sponsor. O’Dwyer notes that supporting SuperUROP can help companies with recruitment. “The whole high-tech business runs on smart people,” he says. “SuperUROPs can lead to internships and employment.”
SuperUROP also exposes students to the work of academia, which can underscore a key difference between classwork and research: Research results are unpredictable.
Junior math major Lior Hirschfeld, for example, compared the effectiveness of different machine learning methods used to test molecules for potential in drug development. “None of them performed exceptionally well,” he says.
That might appear to be a poor result, but Hirschfeld notes that it’s important information for those who are using and trusting those tests today. “It shows you may not always know where you are going when you start a project,” says Hirschfeld, also an MIT EECS/Takeda SuperUROP scholar.
EECS senior Kenneth Acquah had a similar experience with his SuperUROP project, which focuses on finding a technological way to combat money laundering with Bitcoin. “We’ve tried a bunch of things but mostly found out what doesn’t work,” he says.
Still, Acquah says, he values the SuperUROP experience, including the chance to work in MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). “I get a lot more supervision, more one-on-one time with my mentor,” the MIT/EECS Tang Family FinTech SuperUROP scholar says. “And working in CSAIL has given me access to state-of-the-art materials.”

The Design Milk 2018 Father’s Day Gift Guide
When it comes to Father’s Day gifts, we believe dads out there deserve a level of careful consideration not only representing an appreciation for everything they do, but also in recognition of their passions and interests, especially if they love design. Our list of gift ideas below sidesteps the tropes of Father’s Day – no socks or ties here – a continuation of last year’s recommendations delivering a heartfelt acknowledgment of both dads and design.
30th Anniversary LA Forum x Modernica Collaboration Chair A three-way collaboration between Modernica, L.A. Forum, and Claret-Cup would make for a unique Father’s Day gift for anyone with an affinity for Eames, mid-century design, and fiberglass. Bonus: each chair comes with a 1-year membership to the LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design.
Escentric Molecule – Molecule 01, 02 + 03 An unusual fragrance gift idea for the gent who wants to smell good without smelling fragrant. Each of aromachologist Geza Schöen’s synthetically formulated scents are unconventionally subtle, imagined for those who don’t normally like wearing fragrances – minimalist, modern, and molecular scents that only come along upon the skin, unique to its wearer.
PRO-JECT Debut Carbon Turntable / PH01 / A2+ Complete Listening Package Whether the dad in your life is a lifelong collector of vinyl or just starting out, this complete package trio comprised of a belt driven turntable, preamp/headphone amp, and set of stereo speakers delivers quality all-around sound without taking up very much room or breaking the bank. Additional customization and accessory upgrade options are also available here.
NJP LED Table Lamp Designed by nendo design studio’s Oki Sato for Louis Poulsen, the NJP LED Table Lamp is a manifestation of a shared appreciation for soft and indirect lighting coveted by both the Japanese and Scandinavians. The lamp’s ingenious “chimney” opening in the back is designed to move heat out and away, while also creating a secondary light source highlighting the lamp’s arm. Any recipient will appreciate this modernized elegant and subtle reinterpretation of the classic architect’s lamp every time they settle in under its glow.
Desgin Gin We’ve been on a gin kick lately, enjoying the refreshing spirit with tonic or mixed as cocktails, but also neat. Desgin Gin caught our eye for its distinct and designer label, an American juniper base gin that won silver medal at San Francisco Spirits for its slightly sweet and light citrus profile delivered in with bold typography. A bottle should make a great gift for any father who enjoys a drink or two, but especially if they work as a graphic designer.
Teak Star Cutting Board + Achilles Chef’s Knife Here’s a gift pairing for the father with a passion for the culinary and appreciation for modern forms. London-based Edge of Belgravia’s wide range of beautiful blades are all gift-worthy, but it’s their new Teak Star cutting board that stands out for its geometric modernity offering kitchen-to-table presentation utility. The sharp geometry pairs well with one of the most ergonomic blades we’ve ever tried – a winner of the German Design Award for 2018 for “Excellent Product Design – Kitchen” – featuring a small finger hole handle that creates a confident grip anytime the user is channeling their inner René Redzepi.
This Is Ground Ritual Wash Kit As someone who travels far and often, I’d be rather pleased to be gifted something as luxe and supremely utilitarian as this travel wash kit. Just like everything else the LA-based company designs, This Is Ground’s compact soft leather dopp kit has been carefully thought out for tidy and secure organization, with leather straps designed to secure a toothbrush, comb, razor, brushes, and other 3oz or smaller essentials in place.
Cloud X Running Shoes There are lightweight shoes and there are cushioned shoes, but rarely do the two ever meet. Here’s the exception. On Running’s CloudTec teethed sole looks rather significant, but pick it up and it reveals itself to be an insignificant burden – a super lightweight running shoe that doesn’t compromise cushioning, delivering a comfortable and soft foot fall. Ideally a gift for runners, these performance sneakers are also excellent for travelers who pack light, but still like to workout wherever they go.
“Pyrite Light Series” by Hamish Robertson Bare walls beg for some art, so may we humbly suggest Los Angeles-based photographer Hamish Robertson’s triptych of fool’s gold – symbolically representing prosperity and good luck – a visual sentiment appropriate to the trials, tribulations, and rewards of fatherhood. Robertson has numerous other prints available via his website to match subject and mood.
Naim For Bentley Mu-so Qb – The Bentley Collection The majority of us won’t be able to buy dad a Bentley, but perhaps budget will permit purchase of a wireless speaker manufactured by the same premier audio brand responsible for outfitting the luxury vehicles emblazoned with the iconic winged “B” logo. The beauty of the Naim Mu-so Qb is its simplicity in connectivity and in deliverance of dependably excellent overall sound. The pared down design looks every part sophisticated in this special edition customized in an exclusive hue and knurling, both nods to the Bentley brand.
Vortecon Kinetic Desk Toy Not every gift has to be significant in size or price. The Vortecon is an object of perpetual movement and amusement designed for the spinning workings of the mind, a gift suited for creative thinkers who require moments of leisure and daydreaming. Note, this kinetic fidget toy won’t be available till July, so place a pre-order now and offer something like this related gift as a prelude while he patiently awaits.
Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design adds their signature sleek minimalist detailing to the Huawei Mate 10 turning an already handsome Android device into something more stylishly sinister. UV disinfection technology – the developing programs
Published by: Gunvinder Bhogal, EngineerLive
“Ultraviolet (UV) technology was at first employed to make sure the adequate disinfection of municipal consuming h2o. Considering the fact that its introduction over 40 years’ back it is now applied globally for disinfection, of h2o in numerous distinct industries, like foods and beverage industries, pharmaceutical manufacturing, aquaculture and transport.
UV kills all identified spoilage microorganisms, like micro organism, viruses, yeasts and moulds (and their spores). It is a low routine maintenance, environmentally welcoming technology which eradicates the need for chemical therapy although guaranteeing superior amounts of disinfection.
How UV disinfection operates
UV is the element of the electromagnetic spectrum involving noticeable light and X-rays. The certain portion of the UV spectrum involving 185-400nm (identified as UV-C) has a robust germicidal effect, with peak efficiency at 265nm. At these wavelengths UV eradicates microorganisms by penetrating their mobile membranes and harming the DNA, making them unable to reproduce and efficiently killing them.
A normal UV disinfection process is made up of a UV lamp housed in a protective quartz sleeve and mounted in a cylindrical stainless metal chamber. The liquid to be taken care of enters at just one close and passes together the whole duration of the chamber prior to exiting at the other close. Nearly any liquid can be efficiently taken care of with UV, like h2o, sugar syrups, beverages and effluent.
There are no microorganisms identified to be resistant to UV – this incorporates pathogenic micro organism these kinds of as Listeria, Legionella and Cryptosporidium (and its spores, which are resistant to chlorination). The UV dose essential for deactivation may differ from just one species to an additional and is calculated in millijoules per sq. centimetre (mJ/cm2). Values for certain microorganisms have been experimentally founded and are employed to identify the variety and sizing of UV process necessary.
The dose been given by an organism in a UV therapy process is dependent on 4 primary factors:
1. The power output of the UV supply
2. The flow fee of the fluid by the therapy chamber
3. The transmission value (potential to transmit UV light) of the fluid staying taken care of
4. The geometry of the therapy chamber
By optimising these conditions, a UV process can be tailored to efficiently take care of huge or little flows, as perfectly as viscous fluids or these made up of dissolved solids and superior amounts of starch or sugar compounds.
There are two primary forms of UV technology dependent on the variety of UV lamps employed: low tension and medium tension. Low tension lamps have a monochromatic UV output (limited to a solitary wavelength at 254nm), whilst medium tension lamps have a polychromatic UV output (with an output involving 185-400nm).
Rewards of UV disinfection
UV disinfection has numerous benefits over different strategies. Contrary to chemical therapy, UV does not introduce contaminants or residues into system h2o and does not alter the chemical composition, flavor, odour or pH of the fluid staying disinfected.
UV therapy can be employed for key h2o disinfection or as a again-up for other h2o purification strategies these kinds of as carbon filtration, reverse osmosis or pasteurisation. Considering the fact that UV disinfection does not depend on a chemical residual, the locale(s) of the models really should be meticulously deemed for ideal functionality.
Food stuff, beverage and brewing industries
Disinfection of immediate call h2o: Although municipal h2o supplies are normally absolutely free from destructive or pathogenic microorganisms, this really should not be assumed. In addition, h2o from private resources these kinds of as pure springs could also be contaminated. Any h2o employed as an ingredient, or coming in immediate call with the solution, can for that reason be a supply of contamination. UV disinfects this h2o without having chemicals or pasteurisation. It also makes it possible for the re-use of system h2o, preserving income and bettering efficiency without having jeopardizing the high quality of the solution.
CIP (Clean up-in-Put) rinse h2o: It is critical that the CIP remaining rinse h2o employed to flush out overseas issue and disinfecting methods is microbiologically risk-free. Entirely automatic UV disinfection devices can be built-in with CIP rinse cycles to make sure remaining rinse h2o does not reintroduce microbiological contaminants. Mainly because of their superior power density, MP lamps are a lot less afflicted by any sudden modifications in the temperature of the CIP h2o than a LP lamp.
Filter disinfection: Reverse osmosis (RO) and granular activated carbon (GAC) are frequently employed to filter system h2o, but can be a breeding ground for micro organism. UV is an efficient way of disinfecting both of those stored RO and GAC filtered h2o and has been employed in the system industries for numerous years.
Cooling media and chiller disinfection: Some meat and dairy products and solutions are matter to contamination soon after warmth therapy or cooking. UV supplies an great way to safeguard meals from contamination by call-cooling fluids.
Sugar syrups: Sugar syrups can be a key breeding ground for microorganisms. Although syrups with incredibly superior sugar material do not assistance microbial development, any dormant spores may grow to be lively soon after the syrup has been diluted. Dealing with the syrup and dilution h2o with UV prior to use will make sure any dormant microorganisms are deactivated.
De-aerated liquor: De-aerated liquor is included as element of a superior gravity brewing system, frequently in the packaging procedure. This liquor is included right to the beer so wants to be kept absolutely free from contamination by gram negative micro organism, which can trigger off-flavours and acidity.
Yeast planning: The issues involved with yeast planning in breweries are perfectly recognised and include things like hazes, altered fermentation and surface area membranes on packaged beer. A solitary mobile of Sacchoromyces (var. Turbidans) in 16 million cells of pitching yeast will trigger detectable hazes. UV destroys all identified yeasts and their spores.
Wastewater: As element of a multi-barrier system, like filtration, UV can damage microorganisms in the effluent from foods and beverage services prior to discharge. As UV lessens reliance on dangerous chemicals, it also assures all discharges meet up with with local environmental regulations.
UV as an different to ozonation
Nongfu Spring Co. Ltd., just one of China’s major producers of bottled h2o and beverages, has lately opted to use UV for its manufacturing crops throughout China. This is a significant milestone in the bottled h2o field – significantly in China – simply because presently in that place pretty much all bottled h2o is disinfected making use of ozone. And about the globe ozone is even now the disinfection technique of alternative for numerous producers.
The decision by Nongfu Spring to opt for UV was driven by a variety of reasons, not least of which was problems about ozonation by-products and solutions these kinds of as bromate. In fact, Hanovia has observed that more and more bottled h2o and tender beverages producers are now wanting for ozone possibilities, and enquiries about UV are on the raise.
Bromide ions come about normally in numerous spring waters and on their possess pose no issue. On the other hand, the existence of ozone can trigger conversion of bromide into bromate, with the consequent prospective for consumer well being issues. The World Wellness Business (WHO) lists bromate as a carcinogenic compound and suggests its highest limit in mineral h2o be set at .01mg/l (10ppb). In July 2008 the Chinese Standard Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), recommended in a revised draft countrywide typical for consuming h2o and mineral h2o that a highest limit for bromate in bottled h2o be in line the WHO suggestions. This limit has now been in drive considering that Oct 2009.
Pharmaceutical field
Disinfection: As in the foods and beverage industries, UV is employed to disinfect h2o employed in the manufacturing system, no matter if it is for immediate solution make-up or for rinsing and washing system equipment.
TOC reduction: Short UV wavelengths (below 200nm) are highly efficient at breaking down organic and natural molecules present in h2o, specifically low molecular excess weight contaminants. The system operates in two techniques: the very first technique is by immediate photolysis, when power from the UV truly breaks down chemical bonds in the organics the 2nd technique is by the photolysis of h2o molecules, splitting them to generate charged OH- radicals, which also assault the organics.
Dechlorination: To day, the two most commonly employed strategies of chlorine removing have been granular activated carbon (GAC) filters or the addition of neutralising chemicals these kinds of as sodium bisulphite and sodium metabisulphite. Both of those of these strategies have their benefits, but they also have a variety of sizeable negatives. GAC filters, simply because of their porous composition and nutrient-rich environment, can grow to be a breeding ground for micro organism. Dechlorination chemicals these kinds of as sodium bisulphite, which are normally injected just in front of RO membranes, can also act as incubators for micro organism, creating biofouling of the membranes. In addition, these chemicals are dangerous to cope with and there is a hazard of over- or beneath-dosing because of to human mistake.
UV is now becoming increasingly common as an efficient different technique of dechlorination. It has none of the negatives of GAC or neutralising chemicals, although efficiently minimizing both of those absolutely free chlorine and merged chlorine compounds (chloramines) into easily eradicated by-products and solutions.
Aquaculture
Greater h2o extraction and decreased h2o high quality can final result in elevated outbreaks of viral and bacterial fish health conditions in the aquaculture field. Owing to the intense character of fish farming, fish stock is also highly vulnerable to infection from pure fish populations in the h2o feeding the farm. To break the infection cycle involving fish farms and pure fish populations, a disinfection process is required to take care of h2o coming into and circulating in fish farms.
UV is ideally suited for these programs as it takes advantage of no chemicals and does not generate by-products and solutions which would harm the fish stock, or other aquatic daily life, on discharge. Contrary to other therapy strategies, UV avoids the expense of elaborate checking devices concerned in adding and getting rid of chemicals prior to the h2o reaches the fish. In addition, it does not alter the pH of the h2o. Indeed, UV is the most economical disinfection approach that can be employed in fish aquaculture. Programs include things like therapy of h2o in hatcheries, shell-fish purging tanks and fry rearing tanks, and recirculation h2o in marine parks and aquaria.
Swimming swimming pools and spas
UV is now a perfectly-founded technique of swimming pool h2o therapy, from hydrotherapy spas to total-sized level of competition swimming pools. This development in level of popularity has been mostly because of to UV’s reliability and simplicity of use. A different significant issue is the decreased reliance on standard chemical solutions it affords, significantly chlorine. UV is also highly efficient at destroying chlorine-resistant microorganisms like Cryptosporidium andGiardia.
Some of the more unpleasant by-products and solutions of chlorination are chloramines, shaped when chlorine reacts with sweat or urine in pool h2o. Trichloramines in distinct are strong irritants which are liable for eye and respiratory issues and the unpleasant smells commonly involved with indoor community swimming pools. They are also corrosive and in time can lead to injury to pool structures and buildings these kinds of as air flow ducts.
A different significant gain of UV is that it drastically lessens the need for backwashing and dilution, preserving hundreds of lbs a month for pool operators.
Backlink involving chloramines and bronchial asthma
A new review identified an elevated incidence of bronchial asthma in small children who swam routinely in chlorinated swimming pools. In some instances the injury was equal to that identified in hefty people who smoke. Even individuals sitting down at the sides of swimming pools, these kinds of as lifeguards and instructors, ended up identified to be at danger.
The signs are triggered, the researchers feel, by chloramines – significantly trichloramines. The issue is perhaps so severe that the study’s authors suggested pool operators really should very seriously look at possibilities to chlorine-dependent disinfection. They also recommended greater air flow to enable take out chloramine-laden air from pool surroundings, enhanced cleanliness techniques by bathers by themselves – these kinds of as showering prior to swimming – and the standard renewal of pool h2o.
While additional investigation is required, these conclusions incorporate additional credence to the significance of minimizing chloramines as significantly as achievable.
Other UV programs
Ship Ballast H2o: All ocean-heading vessels acquire on h2o to provide ballast and steadiness. It is normally taken on in coastal port areas and transported to the following port of connect with, in which it may be discharged. The IMO (Intercontinental Maritime Organisation) sets tough benchmarks to take care of all ballast h2o prior to discharge, and UV disinfection – in conjunction with filtration – is now just one of the accepted strategies of therapy.
Summary
Meeting the increasingly demanding cleanliness benchmarks necessary in the manufacturing of foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals, as perfectly h2o high quality problems in the leisure, aquaculture, transport and oil drilling industries, is a true obstacle. If enhancements need to be produced to plant and equipment, they need to deliver brief returns on the expense and measurable enhancements in solution high quality.
For producers looking for to enhance the high quality of the close solution, UV is an economic, sensible possibility. It is an founded technique of disinfecting consuming h2o all through the globe, and is now obtaining programs in numerous other industries.
UV disinfection devices are effortless to set up, with bare minimum disruption to the plant. They need incredibly very little routine maintenance, the only requirement staying substitution of the UV lamps just about every 9 – 12 months, based on use. This is a simple procedure that will take only a handful of minutes and can be carried out by normal routine maintenance personnel.”
