I'm usually pretty boyfriend/male love interest critical so it catches me by surprise that despite only having seen the 25th anniversary edition, I don't think very ill of Raoul while a lot of other people really seem to hate him.

In fairness some of that has to be because of Love Never Dies.

#I guess I think about it as sort of. I love Christine. And she is off her gourd. In a fascinating way! But you know.#she's still mad with the grief of her father. Has clearly always been an imaginative (perhaps superstitious) girl and Raoul knows this #and she keeps going on about an Opera Ghost and an Angel sent by her father #and Raoul is half correct when he says it's just in her mind. When he thinks that it's just Christine's grief and fear talking #The Phantom is real and he is manipulating Christine's fear and grief and imaginative mind #presenting himself as an otherworldly avatar of her father. Which is an insane scenario.#While it's true that Christine refers to him as a man she also partly believes - or allows herself to believe; or wills herself to believe #that he is an angel or a ghost or something supernatural #And Raoul is like I'm going to love you so hard none of that is going to bother you anymore.
