~~~~~
You were stood in the school playground waiting for your 4 year old daughter Molly to finish class. Tonight was the performance of her class’s play they’d been rehearsing for the last couple of months. It would be Molly’s first school performance as she was only in her first year at school. You were extremely proud of your little girl and couldn’t wait to watch her shine on stage.
“Are you all ready for the show tonight?” asked Kim, the mum of another child in your daughter’s class.
“Just about! Molly’s costume is all ready; we’ve got to pick it up from my sisters on the way home. How about you guys? Is Jack excited?” you asked in return.
“Yeah Jack is really excited! He couldn’t wait to get to school this morning for their final rehearsals! I think he’s even more excited because his dad is able to make it. The whole family are coming to watch him!” she smiled excitedly.
“Will Douglas be back in time to watch the performance?” she asked.
You looked away from her, facing the classroom as the doors opened and the children began to make their way towards their parents. Each one of them greeting their dads with huge smiles on their faces and embracing them with hugs. It was hard to watch the relationship some of the children had with their fathers knowing Douglas couldn’t always be around to see his daughter. You knew he loved her dearly, she knew he did too.
It was difficult when Douglas had to leave for months on end due to work. This time he’d been away for 3 months. It meant he’d missed out on Molly’s first parents evening and a school disco. Although Molly seemed to understand her father had to work away, you knew she missed him dearly, often walking in on her talking to her toys about him and crying at night where she missed him.
“He’s not due back until tomorrow… Molly doesn’t know yet” you sighed, worried as to how you would break the news to your little girl.
Your thoughts were soon interrupted as molly came running over to you, her book bag in hand. You couldn’t help but smile at how her dark brown hair, which had been in perfect pigtails this morning, was now messy from her antics of the day. As she handed her bag over for you to carry, she smiled big at you. Her smile reflecting that of her fathers perfectly.
“Is daddy going to be home for my play?” she asked excitedly, her deep brown eyes looking up at you in hope.
You felt your heart sink as you shook your head and bent down to her level, stroking her soft hair and touching her cheek.
“I’m sorry sweetie, Daddy can’t make it tonight. He should be home tomorrow though. Then you can do your own little play for him, how does that sound?” you smiled, trying to put a positive spin on the situation for her.
Molly didn’t say anything and stayed completely quiet. She held your hand as you walked to the car in silence, shuffling her feet across the floor as she walked. During the drive to your sisters she stared out of the window at the passing cars, not once saying a word. The constant silence a sure sign as to how upset she was Douglas wouldn’t make it to her play. You picked up Molly’s costume and drove home.
“There’s some juice in the fridge for you sweetie, I’ll make a start on dinner” you said gently, hanging up both your coat and Molly’s on the hanger as she made her way into the kitchen to get her juice.
“DADDY!” you heard her shout in excitement.
You were confused. Douglas wasn’t due home until tomorrow and you couldn’t see his duffel bag in the hallway where he usually left it after arriving home. Frowning in confusion you made your way into the kitchen.
“Hey babygirl! Daddy missed you!” Douglas grinned, lifting Molly up off the floor as she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
Douglas tightly wrapped his arms tightly around his little girl, holding her close to him. He ran his fingers through her pigtail and rocked her gently, closing his eyes to take in the moment.
You stood in the doorway and smiled, your heart melting at the scene in front of you. Your two favourite people sharing a magical moment.
“Mummy! Daddy’s home!” Molly grinned excitedly as she wriggled in Douglas’s arms before hugging him again.
“He sure is!” you smiled, still confused as to Douglas’s sudden appearance.
“Daddy, will you come and watch my play later?” Molly asked him, her eyes once again full of hope.
“Of course! That’s why I’m here. I couldn’t miss my little princess’ first play now, could I!?” he smiled at her, kissing her forehead.
Molly grinned again as she hugged her father again tightly.
“Right then Miss Molly-Moo! You need to go get ready as daddy is going to take you and mummy out for dinner before your play!” he stated as he gently placed molly on the floor in front of him.
Molly immediately did as she had been told and ran straight past you, full of excitement towards her bedroom.
“I thought you weren’t due home until tomorrow?” you finally asked your husband now Molly was out of the way.
“I got an earlier flight so I could watch our little princess tonight. Besides, I missed my wife too much to wait any longer” he explained as he walked towards you and wrapped his arms tightly around your waist.
You smiled and placed your arms around his shoulders and played with his hair. Douglas looked deep into your eyes and pulled you slightly closer towards him.
“I swear you’ve got more beautiful since I last saw you…” he almost whispered as he gently brushed part of your hair away from your face before gently pressing his lips on yours.
Pulling away you rest your forehead on his, looking into his eyes again. The reality of how much you’d missed him suddenly hitting you.
“Welcome home baby” you whispered as you leaned forward to kiss him
again.
