Luxury Travel Trailers Under 5000 Lbs Best Quality
Luxury Travel Trailers Under 5000 Lbs Best Quality Luxury Travel Trailers Under 5000 Lbs. There are people who are interested in our series on lightweight travel trailers because they want the ideal balance of full-size travel trailer features with the benefits of fuel efficiency and lower costs. The best travel trailers for this group of buyers are those that weigh less than 5,000 pounds. They can find what they're looking for from numerous large brands and independent producers. The length of these RVs is between 23 and 28 feet. They can have slideouts or not. The amenities are full-size or nearly so. The top 5,000-pound-and-under travel trailers for the 2020 RV market are shown in the examples below. To demonstrate how diverse this sub-group is, we'll show you a variety of floorplans. Let's look at some reliable towing vehicles for this category of travel trailers before we proceed. image of Luxury Travel Trailers Under 5000 Lbs Selecting The Correct Suv These compact, SUV-friendly travel trailers must be pulled by a vehicle with a towing capacity greater than the RV's unloaded vehicle weight (UVW). Even if your tow vehicle has a 5,000 pound towing capacity, once you start loading up these coaches, you risk going over that weight limit. For the following reasons, you require a tow vehicle with at least 1,000 additional pounds of capacity: - 400â600 pounds of camping equipment and supplies are typical. - Holding tanks: It's always a good idea to bring some freshwater with you when you travel. You might need to use the restroom en route. - Weight of your passengers: Veteran RVers estimate that each passenger in the tow vehicle weighs between 170-200 pounds. It's always better to estimate too highly. - Strength for road conditions: Your tow vehicle's ability to handle hills, mountains, and other driving obstacles will decrease based on how much weight it must tow. - Fuel economy and other X-factors: Your SUV or truck will require less fuel the less power it needs to tow. X-factors can be any additional circumstances that come to mind. The shrewd RVer anticipates the unexpected and works to prevent it from happening. These are some SUVs that fit this description as examples. Pickup trucks are excluded from the list because they can tow more than what is required. The tow package models with the most powerful engines are included in these towing capacities. Company Model Tow Capacity, lb Ford Explorer 5.600 BMW X7 5.940 Nissan Pathfinder 6.000 Chevy Suburban 6.300 Chevy Tahoe 6.600 Mercedes G-Class 7.000 Jeep Grand 7.200 Cherokee Jeep 4.500 Toyota Sequoia 7.400 Mercedes GLS 7.500  You should read our articles on the lighter travel trailers under 3,000 and 2,000 pounds if your truck can't tow as much. A Range Of Travel Trailers Under 5,000 Pounds With The Best Quality 20 Fb Airstream Caravel - Weight when dry: 4,300 UVW - Outside Dimensions: 20.8 feet - sleeping space: up to 4 individuals - MSRP: $62,234 After the Sport was discontinued, this light-weight travel trailer series was revived and named after Spanish fleet ships of the 1500s. The 20FB, the heaviest of the four versions, is available in lengths ranging from 16 to 22 feet. With this lineup, Airstream customers can expect large unit features in a lightweight coach with upscale class accents. The hand-painted hitch is the first feature of the Caravel that you'll notice. To guarantee that your travel trailer maintains its hold on your towing vehicle, a new hitch coupler and other components have been redesigned. A full-size spare tire and a power tongue jack are additional standard features of the RV. Moen faucets, an all-electric refrigerator, and mounted LED TVs at both ends of the coach are among the features that are visible. Subtle details include frosted white slider doors on the overhead cabinets, touch dimmer switches for the lighting, and non-slip cushions on the seating. Even more incredible is what you can't see. A dual gas/electric water heater and ducted air conditioning are both features of the Caravel. You can use your own solar panels or the optional 90-watt solar panel for dry camping by connecting them to the pre-wire port. In any case, the coach also includes a 1,000-watt inverter as standard equipment. You can also request that all of the side and rear windows have the optional awnings installed to help regulate the temperature. The tinted rock guards that serve as awnings for the front panoramic window that Airstreams are famous for. There are many windows throughout the coach, so you can let nature regulate your climate on windy days. The Coleman Light Lx 2125bh - UVW: 4,554 pounds when dry - Dimensions: 25.8 feet - 5 to 6 people can sleep here. - Cost-basis: $24,328 RV buyers once reserved their purchases for models with slideouts. Those times have long passed. A fantastic entry-level travel trailer under 5,000 lbs. is the Light LX 2125BH. This bunkhouse unit is suitable for families and SUVs, weighing less than 4,600 pounds UVW. With their light solid wood interior and dĂŠcor, Coleman does a fantastic job of maintaining the interior's brightness. Deep storage is located thoughtfully throughout the RV. Your largest items can be stored underneath the front sofa and the lower double bunk. The master bed is a murphy bed that folds over the daytime sofa to save space. The mattress for this portable bed is kept incredibly comfortable by Coleman. For all of your mobile devices, there are nightstands with charging ports on either side of the bed or sofa. The kitchen's countertops are seamless, and the stove's cover for the recessed, two-burner stove is flush with the counter. Larger pots and pans might be difficult to fit on the burners, but the outdoor kitchen's stoves can accommodate almost any size. Additionally, there is a small refrigerator and utensil storage in the outdoor area to keep you away from the indoor kitchen. Even without the slideout, the bathroom has plenty of legroom. The tub-style shower does not have a skylight, which would provide more headroom, but it does help to maintain a steady temperature inside. Small children or children with four legs can wash off after a romp in the mud and dirt in the tub. The sealed underbelly of the Coleman contributes to maintaining temperatures as well. Additionally, they have sealed-frame windows. This avoids the 13,500 air conditioners and heaters having to run longer than necessary due to leak problems. Expandable Palomino Solare 185 Hybrid - 4,134 pounds UVW in dry weight - Dimensions: 25.9 feet - sleeping space: up to 8 individuals - $19,500- $23,200 Many people overlook the benefits of hybrid trailers when looking for the highest-quality travel trailers under 5,000 lbs. Like all hybrids, a comparable-sized traditional travel trailer won't be able to sleep as many people or offer as much interior walking space. More information on the numerous advantages of hybrids can be found in our feature article. Three expandable beds and a fold-down U-shaped dinette are features of the Palomino SolAire 185X. The beds can be expanded to queen-size size. For large families, this lightweight RV strikes the ideal balance between affordability and comfort. A separate table with two stools that can be used as a workspace or entertainment center is located opposite the dinette. There is a ton of counter space in the kitchen to work with the sink and stove cover. To ensure you have enough space for food storage, they placed a large pantry and an 8 cubic foot refrigerator opposite the kitchen. With the outdoor kitchen, you can eat outside. It has a small refrigerator, a two-burner stove, and utensil storage. While you're outside, take advantage of the power awning with LED lighting and all-weather outdoor speakers to enjoy the evening while listening to your favorite music. Trailmaster Light 238RK for the Gulf Stream - UVW: 4,830 pounds dry weight - Dimensions: 28.6 feet - sleeping space: up to 6 individuals - $17,000-$22,000 This travel trailer with a rear kitchen is fantastic for relaxing with a partner. The two of you can move around freely without encroaching on each other's personal space. There are also comfortable places where you can talk when you want. The master bedroom makes it possible for the person who sleeps on the opposite side of the bed to get to their side of the bed without having to "crab-walk" against the wall or bump their head against an additional TV. Front access to the master bedroom is provided by the second door. You can rest easy knowing that this is a better emergency exit than the majority of other coaches, which use the windows as exits. A six cubic foot double-door refrigerator is in the kitchen. There is a large pantry next to the full-sized sofa that can hold a week's worth of dry goods. You will have plenty of counter space and large appliances to prepare any type of meal because the RV's kitchen takes up the entire back of the vehicle. The off-door slideout is mounted on the chassis by Gulf Stream, giving it real stability and dependability. The ducted air conditioning is kept from escaping through their framed windows. They use a crowned roof and drip rails to direct rain and moisture away from your travel trailer in order to stop water from settling or finding leaks. Compared to some RVs on the market, the front exterior pass-through storage isn't as large. Tents, fishing poles, and other equipment should fit without any issues. If you need to bring something really large with you, it might fit nicely in the master bedroom, just inside the back door. Base Keystone Hideout 172lhs - 3,700 pounds UVW in dry weight - Dimensions: 21.4 feet - sleeping space: up to 4 individuals - $15,000- $18,5000 The Hideout 172LHS is the best lightweight toy hauler for you if you want a toy hauler but don't want one of those really long units. It has a six and a half foot garage that can accommodate most dirt bikes and ATVs and is towable up to 5,000 pounds. It's far from a basic toy hauler and is in keeping with Keystone's standards and quality. You can refuel yourself by cooking your meal on a two-burner stove and microwave after a day of outdoor exploration. You can bring a wide variety of food with you because the unit has a six cubic foot refrigerator. On the fold-out couch and table in the garage section, you can relax and enjoy your meal once it is prepared. The RV has pre-wired TV and input sources, so you can watch while you're sitting there. Watch the big game or your favorite programs all at once. The residential-sized queen bed up front can accommodate you and your partner when you're ready to retire. The media hub includes a Bluetooth DVD/CD/MP3 stereo. To charge your mobile devices for tomorrow's adventures, there are charging ports and electrical outlets all over the coach. The all-weather speakers allow you to play your music while seated under the power awning. You are not limited to civilization for those true adventure trips. The solar panels on this Hideout toy hauler are already wired. Rainwater is directed away from your trailer by a gutter system on the edges of the sturdy walk-on roof. The framed windows also aid in maintaining the indoor temperature at the desired low level. Falcon Travel Lite 27bhk - 4,200 pounds UVW in dry weight - Dimensions: 27.4 feet - sleeping space: up to 6 individuals - $18,000 It's not necessary for your best travel trailer under 5,000 lbs to blend in just because you have one. When you pull into the campground, everyone in the campground will notice you thanks to the Travel Lite Falcon series. Even before you put the tongue jack down, you'll be answering questions thanks to its slick design and wide range of colors. With their striking lightweight travel trailers and truck campers, independent RV manufacturer Travel Lite slammed into the 2020 market like a tidal wave. Their flagship Falcon is available in matte black, white, charcoal, or red. Even the front end's extreme aerodynamics are designed to draw attention to these RVs. The exterior also has a few minor variations. To increase the trailer's protection from road debris, the diamond plate is raised above that of their competitors. Additionally, they increased the standard propane capacity by twofold, giving RVers longer between refills. The all-weather speakers are great for people who are serious about their music or the audio quality of their outdoor TV viewing. To improve the sound quality with those deep tones, Travel Lite comes with a kicker. Before turning it up, just make sure your neighbors are okay with it. The master bedroom at Travel Lite has a TV arm, and there are TV holders both inside and outside. Although you are free to purchase any TV you like, they offer the brackets and pre-installed female connectors. They simplify the setup for your indoor and outdoor entertainment by doing this. When designing their cabinetry, the company used a different strategy. All the cabinet doors now have windows. This not only allows you to see inside, but the colored LED lights also add to the ambiance of your coach. The Gran Turismo (GT), Nordic, or Extreme packages are available for their coaches. Their all-weather model is the Nordic. The Extreme upgrade is their top of the line, all-inclusive option, while GT is their mid-level upgrade. They install a larger refrigerator and other features when you select the GT or the Extreme. Their RVs' wheel placement is one of their best features. They don't sit directly underneath the coach; they sit outside of it. As a result, there is more stability and less sway. A model of bunkhouse with an outdoor kitchen is the F-27BHK. A guest on the fold-down dinette and a family of four will have plenty of room to enjoy this area. Everyone has enough space to store everything they need for their camping trip in the large pantry, six cubic foot refrigerator, and numerous storage compartments. Future SUVs: Coming Soon to a Dealer Near You
Whether itâs cheap gas, perceived safety, or just collective preference, SUVs and crossovers are the fastest-growing segment of the vehicle market, mostly at the expense of cars. American shoppers canât get enough of âem, and automakers are happy to design as many of these higher-profit margin vehicles as they can to meet the demand.
Much as cars used to offer a wide variety of body styles and functions appealing to all sorts of buyers, SUVs and crossovers today come in seemingly endless shapes, sizes, and powertrains. From EVs to rock crawlers, thereâs something for everyone coming to your local showroom soon.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Whatâs New: The latest addition to the Mustang model line is a battery-electric crossover four-door SUV. Really. Although the Mach-E looks nothing like any Mustang before it, the Blue Ovalâs EV certainly packs the straight-line punch to woo pony car fans. The most powerful modelâthe nearly 460-hp Mach-E GTâaims to scoot from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The slinky crossover relies on one of two available battery packs to power its standard rear-axle motor and optional front-axle motor: a 76-kW-hr Standard Range pack or a 99-kW-hr Extended Range setup. Ford estimates a maximum driving range of 300 miles between charges for rear-drive Mach-Es equipped with the Extended Range battery, though a heavy right foot will surely drag down that distance.
Whatâs Not: Save for its Mustang nomenclature, the Mach-E shares little else with any Ford before it.
When: Late 2020
How Much: $44,995
Genesis GV80
Whatâs New: At long last, the Genesis brandâs first SUV is launching for the 2021 model year. The GV80 is a midsize, rear-drive-based SUV with seating for five. The GV80 will be plenty luxurious in base form, offering extra-posh features such as diamond-stitched leather, ash wood trim, augmented reality navigation, and more at a competitive price. Engine choices for the U.S. will include a 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4 making 300 hp and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 good for 375 hp. Both engines will come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Whatâs Not: The GV80 is all-new from the ground up, but the design hasnât changed much from the excellent concept we first saw in 2017.
When: Summer 2020
How Much: $49,925
Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV
Whatâs New: Cadillac shares its stretched, independently suspended architecture, 6.2-liter V-8 and I-6 diesel engines, and 10-speed transmission with the Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon. It justifies its hefty price premium with such tech treasures as 38 inches of curved OLED display screen, augmented reality navigation, Super Cruise, night vision, and AKG Studio Reference 36-speaker sound. New for 2021, a Sport model features blackout trim. Cadillac offers eight interior color themes that can be decorated with myriad woods and leather sew patterns. Standard-wheelbase versions will launch late this year, with the Suburban-size ESV following in early 2021.
Whatâs Not: Platinum remains the ne plus ultra trim grade.
When: Late 2020 (ESV early 2021)
How Much: $77,500â$102,000 (est)
Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban
Whatâs New: Nearly everything, but most important: an independent rear suspension. This change, plus the addition of 4.9 and 6.8 inches to the Tahoeâs wheelbase and length (Suburban adds 4.1 and 1.3 inches) aims to again wrest dimensional and ride/handling superiority from Fordâs Expedition/Max. Fourth-gen magnetic ride control shocks are optional, with the upper trims getting MR plus height-adjustable air suspension. Thereâs a new 270-hp, 460-lb-ft 3.0-liter I-6 diesel option, and all models get a 10-speed automatic. The fancier High Country trim helps keep the Chevy faithful from straying to Yukon Denalis.
Whatâs Not: The 5.3- and 6.2-liter V-8s continue, adding DFM cylinder deactivation; 2500 and 3500 variants are dropped.
When: Mid-2020
How Much: $50,295â$70,895 (Tahoe), $52,995â$73,595 (Suburban)
GMC Yukon/Yukon XL
Whatâs New: To everything mentioned in Chevyâs Tahoe/Suburban entry, add GMCâs AT4 off-road-optimized package, which builds on Chevyâs Z71 hardware, for both Yukons. It adds Active Response 4WD electronics plus an electric-locking limited-slip differential, red tow hooks, and more luxurious interior trim. Denali models (60 percent of sales) get a unique dash with integrated touchscreenârather than one perched on top. There are also real wood inserts, a 15-inch color head-up display, four color themes, and a GMC-exclusive power-sliding center console with a âsafe drawer.â
Whatâs Not: The level of exterior bling on Denali models.
When: Early Summer 2020
How Much: $51,995â$54,595 (Yukon), $54,695â$75,395 (XL)
Ford Bronco Sport
Whatâs New: The Ford Bronco Sport is the rugged cousin to the Ford Escape, which it shares underpinnings with. The off-road-focused compact SUV is unibody and front-wheel-drive based, but Ford considers it part of the Bronco family, and as such it shares some styling cues with the larger, body-on-frame Bronco. The Bronco Sport is expected to have the 180-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder as its base engine and an optional 250-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, both mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive will likely be standard. The look is boxier and more upright than the rounded, urban Escapeâwith shorter overhangs, underbody protection, a two-piece liftgate, chunky roof rails, and black plastic fenders. In keeping with Fordâs overall plans, there will be a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version.
Whatâs Not: It shares its front-wheel-drive platform and its engines with the Ford Escape.
When: late 2020
How Much: $30,000 (est)
Nissan Rogue
Whatâs New: Nissanâs best-seller is moving to a new platform shared with Renault and Mitsubishi alliance to keep it among the top 10 best-selling vehicles in America. What youâll see and touch has been brought into line with Nissanâs latest styling language inside and out. We expect Nissanâs latest 2.5-liter inline-four under the hood driving the front (or all four) wheels, and thereâs also the possibility Nissan will put its clever VC-Turbo inline-four under the hood of a sporty model. No matter what, expect a continuously variable transmission. Inside, look for an optional digital dash and a 9.0-inch infotainment screen borrowed from the new Titan.
Whatâs Not: We expect the new Rogue to ride on the same platform as before, and a number of its parts and features will be shared from other Nissan products.
When: Late 2020
How Much: $27,000 (est)
Volkswagen Tiguan
Whatâs New: Volkswagenâs global best-seller is due up for a refresh, and youâll recognize it right away with its sportier nose job and all-LED external lighting front and back. Inside, the Tiguan gets a sportier steering wheel, borrowed from the larger Atlas Cross Sport, and VWâs latest infotainment system with over-the-air update capability. Also available: multicolor interior ambient lighting to set the mood.
Whatâs Not: Everything else. Volkswagen is considering a plug-in hybrid drivetrain option for the next-generation Tiguan, but for now, it sticks with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic.
When: Fall 2021
How Much: $26,000 (est)
Alfa Romeo Tonale
Whatâs New: Alfa needs to expand its lineup, and fast. SUVs are hot, so next up is the subcompact Tonale to slot under the compact Stelvio. We expect it to be front-drive based with the option of all-wheel drive, and it will use FCAâs small SUV architecture. The Tonale Concept was powered by an unspecified plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which we think could be the 1.3-liter turbo-four in front and electric motor in the rear used by the Europe-only Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid, which makes 240 hp total. We also think the Alfa will get a non-hybrid option, probably a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4.
Whatâs Not: The Tonale will share a platform and likely powertrains with other FCA small crossovers, such as the Jeep Renegade.
When: Early 2021
How Much: $35,000 (est)
Audi E-Tron Sportback
Whatâs New: Although itâs essentially a fastback version of the E-Tron SUV, with a new roof, new rear quarter panels, and a new tailgate, the E-Tron Sportback has a more carlike presence, like a tall hatchback rather than an SUV trying to look sporty. The Sportback will benefit from a number of technical upgrades from Audi designed to boost range. The front motor will disengage under normal driving, the 95-kW-hr batteryâs thermal management system has been made more efficient, and the batteryâs usable capacity has been increased to 86.5 kW-hr. As with the regular E-Tron, the well-equipped Sportback will be available in Premium Plus and Prestige trim levels.
Whatâs Not: The powertrain is the same as the regular E-Tron, with a 187-hp, 231-lb-ft motor at the rear axle and a 168-hp, 182-lb-ft motor up front. Total system output is 355 hp and 413 lb-ft, and an overboost mode gives 402 hp and 490 lb-ft for 8 seconds.
When: 2021
How Much: $80,000 (est)
Kia Sorento
Whatâs New: Completely redesigned, the Sorento receives a new windswept exterior design. Kia also upgrades the interior with a large screen and sleek controls. Expect ride quality to improve now that the SUV sits on a new platform. New engine options should give the Sorento an extra pep in its step. A 1.6-liter turbo-four works with an electric motor to produce 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.5-liter turbo-four makes 277 hp and 311 lb-ft.
Whatâs Not: Some styling cues reference the Telluride, including the vertical taillights.
When: Late 2020
How Much: $30,000 (est)
Volkswagen ID 4
Whatâs New: Volkswagen has learned Americans arenât much interested in hatchbacks, which is why the first of its all-electric MEB-platform vehicles to arrive stateside will be an SUV. The ID 4 is about the size of Tiguan, but the interior is much roomier. The MEB architecture follows the now-familiar skateboard platform, with a large battery pack between the wheels and motors at the axles. The base ID 4 is likely to be a single-motor rear-drive model, with a GTX version offering two motors, all-wheel drive, and more performance. Top-end ID 4s are expected to have a range of close to 300 miles.
Whatâs Not: The interior hardware is shared with the ID 3 hatch recently launched in Europe, with a compact digital instrument panel in front of the driver and a large centrally mounted touchscreen for infotainment and HVAC functions.
When: 2021
How Much: $35,000 (est)
Volvo XC40 Recharge
Whatâs New: The XC40 Recharge marks the debut of Volvoâs first-ever all-electric powertrain. The Recharge shares Volvoâs Compact Modular Architecture with the regular XC40, but thereâs a liquid-cooled 78-kW-hr battery pack under the floor and a motor on each axle. Volvo claims 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque and a 0â60 time of 4.9 seconds. As with all new Volvos, top speed will be limited to 112 mph. Volvo does its own battery research and development in-house and says the available capacity of the battery pack will be 75 kW-hr, which should easily give the XC40 Recharge a range of 240 miles or more.
Whatâs Not: Apart from the blanked-off grille, the XC40 Recharge looks just like a regular XC40. Thatâs no bad thing, as Volvoâs entry-level SUV is one of the most stylish in the segment.
When: 2021
How Much: $55,000 (est)
Polestar 2
Whatâs New: Polestar 2 is the second model for the Scandinavian brand spun off from Volvo to concentrate on performance electric vehicles. Polestar 1 was a plug-in hybrid, but Polestar 2 is a mainstream all-electric premium four-door sedan to battle the Tesla Model 3. The 2 will have a range of about 275 miles with the 78-kW-hr battery in the floor. Front and rear motors provide a combined output of 400 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. A vegan interior is optional, the infotainment system uses an Android operating system to run Google automotive services, and the advanced tech allows the car to try to anticipate the occupantsâ needs.
Whatâs Not: It features an adaptation of the Volvo CMA architecture used by the Volvo XC40 and the Volvo 11-inch Sensus infotainment screen.
When: Summer 2020
How Much: $63,000 (est)
Fisker Ocean
Whatâs New: Longtime BMW and Aston Martin designerâand creator of the ill-fated Fisker KarmaâHenrik Fisker has bounced back with a green-friendly, five-passenger EV crossover called the Ocean. The Ocean checks all the contemporary EV boxesâup to 300 miles of range, battery capacity north of 80 kW-hr, base 2WD and available AWD, a cool 16-inch center-mounted touchscreen with a haptic touchpad, and a charging partnership with Electrify America. Fun features? A novel multilink rear suspension, a roll-down rear-hatch window for carrying long objects, and karaoke words displayed on the head-up display. The Ocean will be significantly composed of recycled materials such as retrieved ocean plastics and old fishing net.
Whatâs Not: Although the Fisker name is familiar, everything about the Ocean is new, including the company behind the name.

10 Justifiably Discontinued Cars (and 10 SUVs Weâd Love to See Back)
Itâs Never Nice to See a Car Go â Unless itâs Garbage, Of Course
Every year, automakers are faced with the decision as to which models will be built during the upcoming model years. A lot of things go into such decisions, but profitability and sales volume are huge determiners. If a vehicle isnât performing well enough in its market and re-styling wonât save it, itâs bound to find itself in the company of countless discontinued cars which grows year in â year out.
Itâs an annual dance that automotive manufacturers go through trying to determine what in their lineup will yield the most profit and what is dragging them down. Actually itâs not even that clear cut.
The ultimate objective is to maximize profit and the easiest part of that is to dump a dog. However there are riskier decisions that may involve discontinuing a solid performer in order to promote a newcomer with great potential or dropping an up and comer from the brand altogether to give it a chance to stand on its own. These are mega dollar decisions and the reason for so many empty Maalox bottles in the executive suites.
But, what does that mean for the average consumer? Usually, it means that the models to be discontinued will be discounted. Dealers will be having fire sales to clear their lots and make room for new inventory. The later in the calendar year, the steeper the discounts will become.
First off, weâll start with a list of long or recently discontinued SUVs that most people would like to see back, and then weâll move on to some relatively recently discontinued cars, trucks, and SUVs that we might see again after a while or might not see ever again depending on myriad of factors.
10 Discontinued SUVs Everyone Wants to See Back
Reuters and other sources have suggested that Ford, for instance, sees U.S. car marketâs future stacked with SUVs. According to them, SUVs will amount to 40 percent of the entire market by 2020, and they see it as perfect opportunity to expand their SUV portfolio.
Of course, first thing that comes to mind when crossing Blue Oval and SUV is the good old Bronco. It really didnât take a genius to put two and two together and figure out this was the prime time to do so. But, while the iconic nameplate is getting ready to rise and shine again, others arenât as lucky.
Considering how SUVs seem to be the future of the car markets for foreseeable time, itâs a no-brainer to take a look at some iconic SUV nameplates that were either discontinued a long time ago or relatively recently. Some of them exhibit a serious potential for making a comeback soon (some have already been announced), while others are just wishful thinking but who knows what the future might bring.
10. Hummer
Let us start with one of the more obvious choices. H1, H2, H3 -it doesnât really matter. All three generations of the Hummer were highly sturdy and capable, and more or less intertwined. One didnât simply end for another to take swing. The Hummer H1 was available since 1992 and the H3 bowed down in 2010 after the global recession did its part.
This is one of the reasons the Hummer was so special. But everyone that knows about these cumbersome beasts, also knows that they used to offer much more than simply special. Plus, since global recession is more or less behind us, there are no more genuine reasons for them not to be produced.
09. Mitsubishi Pajero
The current Mitsubishi SUV lineup (or Mitsubishi lineup in general) is nowhere near that from 10 or 20 years ago. They are, however, heading in green direction at least â Iâll give them that.
Regardless, the Mitsubishi Pajero (badged as Montero in the States) is still regarded as one of the best vehicles that Japanese manufacturer has managed to assemble. Of course, the Montero had been gone from the U.S. for over a decade now (being discontinued in 2006), but we havenât forgotten it. Have you?
The Pajero is still alive overseas where itâs still selling better than it ever did in the U.S. Incidentally, low sales (1,609 units in 2006 compared to 24,802 units in 2001) were exactly the reason for its discontinuation.
08. Land Rover Defender
Itâs unrealistic to expect the Land Rover returning to their roots with the Defender, but that doesnât mean we wouldnât like that. It wasnât that long they discontinued it, but letâs face it â newer models werenât the true Defenders for years now anyway.
Their current lineup of SUVs is highly capable and correspondingly luxurious, and thereâs simply no place for a bare-bone SUV of old. But, imagine if they actually made one. Of course, it would have been stacked with all the necessary tech, but it wouldnât have to be as plush as the others. That would help lowering the cost one has to pay in order to drive a Landy. Itâs a win win situation in my book.
The next-gen Defender has been announced for model year 2020 and, more importantly, will finally again be available stateside. How the old school sturdiness and new age technology fuse in it, remains to be seen. The last time Defender was available on the U.S. market, Bill Clinton was still in the office. Its short stint on the U.S. market (between 1993 and 1997) was cut due to low profitability.
07. Nissan Xterra
Itâs only been a few years without the Nissan Xterra in the markets, but people looking for extreme sturdiness and reliability (at relatively affordable prices) are already missing that SUV. Most of its current or former owners will attest to its indestructibility and capability alike, and there were many who bought it between 1999 and 2015.
Xterra, however, was simply outdated in 2015 when it finally got the axe and that severely affected its sales. Itâs not the only Nissanâs vehicle to suffer from the same negligence, but while the Frontier still soldiers on, the SUV is now gone. Given the fact SUV craze is still in its full swing (or yet to take the full swing), we wouldnât be surprised to see it return. And we certainly wouldnât mind.
06. Jeep Wagoneer
The Jeep Wagoneer rumors arenât that scarce or strange. They have been circulating for a while now, and they make sense. Jeep still lacks the true flagship three-row SUV, and the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer would be the perfect choice to fill that slot.
Of course, it would probably look much different than we remember it, but the nameplate is what matters. That and exterior wooden panels. Of course, the latter has very slim chance of returning, but itâs our right to dream, isnât it? The Wagoneer first appeared in 1963 and finally got retired in 1991, making it the longest-running domestic vehicle to be built on the same platform. Being a gas-guzzler (11 mpg combined) during the Gulf War oil shock is the main reason behind its discontinuation.
Although still not official, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates have been confirmed for a comeback sometime beyond 2020. Thatâs great news indeed, but letâs not get ahead of ourselves.
05. Willys Jeep CJ
Itâs been a while since this one was discontinued, but itâs impossible to forget an icon, and Willys Jeep certainly was one. A 42 year long stint of production between 1944 and 1986 only bolsters that statement. Jeep finally discontinued the offspring of the WWII veteran in order to make way for a more contemporary YJ Wrangler.
Of course, itâs impossible to expect the old school bare-boned SUV in a modern era where safety regulations play such an important role. Still, if Wrangler manages, why wouldnât one slightly rougher version do the same? Moreover, thereâs some empty space in Jeepâs portfolio since the Patriot has been discontinued and the Compass might not be long for this world.
04. Chevrolet Blazer
Also known as GMC Jimmy, the Chevy Blazer is one of the best known U.S.-made SUVs to date. Sadly, it hasnât been around for quite some time. The Blazer first appeared in 1969 and finally got axed in 1995 when it was renamed Tahoe. It was simply a victim of a new corporate strategy which is an anti-climactic end for such a beloved nameplate.
Of course, we now have the Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon, but the second generation Blazer which lasted for almost 20 years is still sorely missed. The Blazer simply had that X factor which its successors lack. Itâs similar with Blue Ovalâs Bronco and Expedition comparison.
Now, I know that Blazer has made its comeback for MY 2019, but thatâs not the Blazer I was referring to above. The new model might be sporty and plushy, but aside from name, doesnât have anything to do with its iconic predecessor.
03. Toyota FJ Cruiser
Yet again, a car which was axed not so long ago. The Toyota FJ cruiser retired in 2014 (2016 overseas), and left Wrangler as the only rugged, old school off-road SUV on the U.S. market (until the new Bronco finally arrives, that is). Slow sales which never recuperated after the global recession of 2008-09 were the main reason for its discontinuation.
The Japanese are still selling Land Cruisers, but they simply canât be compared with the compact FJ Cruiser. The FJ had that X factor. That something that made it special. Maybe it were the circular headlamps, or the overall boxy appearance, but I sure wish it was still here.
02. GMC Typhoon
The GMC Typhoon was always different than the rest of SUVs marketed at the time. Two year long production (between 1991 and 1993) and fewer than 5,000 units produced wasnât exactly the lifespan youâd wish to a car, but the Typhoon was actually meant to be limited. Being a special-edition vehicle, the Typhoonâs life was naturally short and there were no particular reasons for its discontinuation other than that.
It was a performer, and performance-oriented SUVs werenât really a thing back in early nineties. They are becoming that now, and GMC has something to think about. Itâs an expensive process introducing a new SUV to the market â especially a performance-oriented one â but at least they have the name standing ready.
01. Bronco
Considering all the fuss surrounding it, the Bronco is arguably the most wanted comeback vehicle out there. The Expedition is nice and tough, but the Bronco nameplate has some backbone to it that rarely any other SUV nameplate has. Whether itâs the compact models (1965 to 1977) or full-size units (1977 to 1996), the Broncos were highly appreciated among the U.S. buyers. It was a sad day when the Bronco was finally discontinued in favor of a 4-door Expedition which was Blue Ovalâs answer to competition â mainly that from GM.
Ford doesnât have to sell it in white if thatâs their problem with the car, but showing some love would be appreciated by everyone â especially by buyers. Come to think of it, a white-exclusive OJ Edition wouldnât necessarily have to be a bad thing. Just saying.
Anyway, that was my state of mind a few years back and now that the Bronco is finally making a comeback, thereâs a sense of nervousness permeating the air around it. What if they screw it up?! Hopefully, the new Bronco will be a different sort of SUV than the new Blazer.
Relatively Recently Discontinued Cars We Might or Might Not See Again
Letâs now focus on some recently discontinued models that we probably wonât be seeing ever again. Some of them, however, have already had a similar stint so not all is lost in their cases. So, say your goodbyes to the ones that are gone and say your prayers for the ones that still might appear.
Volkswagen Touareg
The Volkswagen Touareg was introduced for the 2004 model year. It arrived on an early wave of the craze for upscale crossovers. The Touareg is sportier and more luxurious than most mainstream SUVs, but doesnât really standout from the other upscale models.
Unfortunately for the Touaregâs future, the added luxury priced it out of many buyersâ range. VW is not going to abandon the segment altogether, though. The company is introducing the Atlas for 2018. The Atlas is being manufactured in North America and is more affordably priced than the Touareg.
While we probably wonât be seeing Touareg in the U.S. any more, it needs to be noted that the nameplate is still very much alive in the rest of the World.
Buick Verano
The life of the Buick Verano has been short (less than 5 years). The first Veranos hit dealerships for the 2012 model year. True to the basic nature of Buick, the Verano was a very comfortable entry-level luxury sedan.
The Verano, unfortunately, is but one victim of the ever-changing tastes of car buyers. Small car sales are down across the North American market. Instead of offering another sedan, Buick plans to fill the niche with the Encore compact crossover SUV, a model that is already popular among buyers and made its debut alongside the now-discontinued sedan back in 2012.
Itâs also worth mentioning that the Verano name is still very much active in China.
Chevrolet SS
The Chevy SS is another car with a short life span. Introduced in 2014, the full-size SS crossed the ocean from Australia. GM subsidiary Holden designed the SS as a sporty rear-wheel-drive alternative to the Impala.
The SS offered 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque and was fun drive in spite of its size. Sadly, it wasnât marketed particularly well. Very few people even knew of its existence, let alone wanted to pay the $50,000 sticker price.
Around 13,000 units have been sold over almost five years of sleeperâs tenure on the market. Still, if there was any car that deserved to remain being offered as a niche vehicle, this would be the one. In Australia, the Holden Commodore SS was downsized and is still being offered (continually since 1978).
Volkswagen CC
Introduced in 2009, the Volkswagen CC was a stylish and well-equipped entry-level luxury sedan. Despite its wide array of equipment and solid dependability, the four-door CC was also VWâs lowest-volume car.
Sales started declining rapidly after 2011 and never showed any signs of recuperating, hence the upscale sedan was axed in 2017. They were actually so bad that, at one point, VW sold 40 Jettas for every CC that left a dealerâs lot. VW remains hopeful that it can gain a foothold in the near-luxury four-door market, however.
The Germans will be replacing the CC with the Arteon, but even that business didnât go down without complications as the new car missed its intended U.S. market train due to complications with emissions testings.
Chrysler 200
All that can be said about the demise of the Chrysler 200 is: âit was about time!â This lackluster replacement for the equally lackluster Chrysler Sebring has needed to be axed since its inception in 2011. This finally happened in 2017.
Sales were decent, but many owners and potential buyers felt the cheap feeling interior and boring styling were disappointing. The sedan segment was just too crowded for poor styling and cheap interiors. Fiat Chrysler had the common sense to put this donkey to bed and add production capability to meet demands for its truck and SUV lines.
However, this move has left the Chrysler lineup seriously shallow with only the Pacifica minivan and the 300 sedan still on the books.
Smart Fortwo
Mercedes-Benz dabbled in the small economy car niche with the Smart Fortwo. These strange-looking cars hit the roads in 2008 and immediately began disappointing buyers. Tiny, unstable-looking, and short on fuel economy, the Smart Fortwo proved to be short on smart and barely able to fit two.
Mercedes-Benz has decided to drop the gasoline versions after the 2017 model year, but will keep the Electric Drive version. Maybe as an all-electric, this urban crawler will finally find its niche. On the other hand, itâll require some serious progression in terms of its own electric technology if itâs to avoid the gasoline modelâs fate.
Infiniti QX70
When the Infiniti QX70 hit the market in 2003 as the Infiniti FX, sales went wild. The QX70 was a radically curvaceous temptress when everything around her was boxy and staid. Unfortunately, sales have been sagging since the 2005 model year and the mid-size luxury SUV was finally dropped in 2018.
To be fair, there was a bit of an economic downturn between 2008 and 2012 to contend with, but sales have never hit an uptick. Infiniti is replacing the QX70 with a totally restyled QX50. With the crossover and SUV fever that has been sweeping the globe for several years, we may be seeing a retooled version of the QX70 in the not-too-distant future.
Dodge Viper
The loss of the Dodge Viper is the saddest thing we have ever had to type. Chrysler introduced the Dodge Viper in 1992 when its lineup contained more junk than a scrap yard. The only thing Chrysler was selling in 1992 were minivans and a few boxy, underwhelming cars. Then, all of a sudden and completely out of nowhere, the V10 Viper hit the pavement.
Buyers started to get excited about a Chrysler product for the first time in decades. Unfortunately, profits per unit have always been minimal. Fiat Chrysler is in need of every dollar of profit possible, so the Viper is being axed.
Even worse, there are no plans to replace it with another car of note and itâs already been a while since the FCA discontinued the Viper in 2017. So with that, we say goodbye to one of the most iconic American sports cars to date. Of all the cars to be discontinued in recent years, this one definitely breaks our hearts the most.
Jeep Patriot
The Jeep Patriot and the Jeep Compass debuted side-by-side as part of the 2007 model year lineup. The Patriot has stuck around for a decade with very few changes or upgrades. Tired and dated are about the only things that can be said about it. It was finally dropped in 2017 in order to make way fro the new Renegade.
When it debuted, the Patriot was the only compact crossover that sported bona fide off-road skills when equipped with the âTrail Ratedâ 4Ă4 system. Jeep has made a terrible waste of a potential sales monster by allowing it to lament in near stagnation. Oh, about the Jeep CompassâŚit gets a major redesign and a fresh marketing campaign to ensure its continued success.
Cadillac ELR
Just because your badge is upscale does not mean you can take a low end vehicle, dress it up, slap a badge on it and make it an upscale vehicle that people will buy. Unfortunately thatâs what Cadillac did with its version of the Chevy Volt (remember Cimarron?).
Not only was the all-electric poorly conceived, it was also launched when Tesla introduced its spectacularly successful Model S. The $75,000 price tag for the ELR put a real blanket on potential sales. On the plus side, so few were manufactured that they may become a collectible based on rarity.
The ELR was only available between 2014 and 2016 and the company managed to sell close to 3,000 units during that time.
FCA Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country
Soccer Moms and car pool drivers are going to have to find another mode of transport when their existing Caravans and Town & Country vans need to be replaced. These seven passenger minivans with not so great fuel efficiency are the victims of a general reduction in demand and FCAâs shrinking share of the market that is there.
The hope was that the redesigned Chrysler Pacifica will fill the minivan needs of both Dodge and Chrysler customers and so far the Pacifica has delivered.
Dodge versions, as you remember, debuted back in late 1983 and are still being sold for the time being, while the Chrysler Town & Country arrived in late 1989 and disappeared in 2016.
And so ends our list of inglorious discontinued cars from recent years. We bid a fond adieu to a couple and wonder why a few others arenât listed as well? Oh well, something to look forward to in coming years! Speaking of which, this list will be constantly updated with new discontinued models so donât forget to check back and reminisce about them.

Car of the Month: 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe
Back when the first full-size Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility appeared for the 1995 model year, American SUVs were mostly bare bones carryalls hastily assembled on truck ladder-style frames. At that time, creature comforts way down the list of priorities. Much has changed since, and in the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe has as well. Â
We first tested a Tahoe when it replaced the K5 Blazer in their lineup. Just as now, it was a shortened version of Chevroletâs Suburban. We praised its great ride, and noted it was then the only player in its market.
Well, thatâs no longer the case, though truck-based SUVs are becoming rarer. Still, it continues to have a great ride, ever smoother and more compliant over rough pavement than before. Thatâs largely due to a new independent rear suspension with Magnetic Ride Control.
Overall length is up 6.7-inches. Thereâs also no denying Tahoe looks more imposing and sleeker than ever. While still based on a Silverado pickup frame, Tahoe benefits from nearly 5-inches added wheelbase over last year. That, along with the new irs, enabled Chevy to really boost interior space.Â
You have to look to minivans if you want more cargo room. There is 25.5 cubic-ft. behind the 3rd row is 66% more than before; 72.6 behind the second row, and a max capacity of 122.9 cubic-ft with a nice flat load floor. Of course, thereâs still the Suburban if you need more.Â
Chevrolet wanted to boost passenger space too, and there is indeed more for both rows; 3-more inches of legroom for the 2nd row, and a whopping 10-additional inches for 3rd row users.
Nothing pleases buyers more these days than lots of easy to use tech; here, a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, and an 8-inch digital instrument cluster is available, as is a Head-Up display. Now, some may find the multitude of big physical controls in the center stack a step backwards, but we appreciate their familiarity and ease of use.Â
Chevy went untraditional for the transmission shifter; a push/pull gear selector by the center stack. Not a bad approach; and certainly, well located. All Tahoes come with a 10-speed automatic.
Engine choices are the Silveradoâs 355-horsepower 5.3-liter and 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8s, and even the delightful 277-horsepower 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel. Max towing is actually with the lighter 5.3-liter at 8,400-lbs.
Automatic Emergency Braking is standard with a wide range of advance safety features available. The top High Country trim sports HD Surround Vision with a host of cameras with up to 9-different views.
For our complete road test of the all-new Chevrolet Tahoe, be sure to catch MotorWeek episode #4002 that begins airing September 18, 2020. For a listing of the public television stations that broadcast MotorWeek, go to motorweek.org and click the âAbout The Showâ tab at the top. MotorWeek is also seen Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons on the MotorTrend cable channel. The show can also be streamed on PBS Living through Amazonâs Prime Video.
Full-size, truck-based SUVs are not for everyone, which explains the explosion in popularity of car-based crossover utilities. But, if you need a truly useful brute, this 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is one you should be sure to check out!

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV, essentially a shorter version of the Chevrolet Suburban. Three rows of seats are standard, with seating options for as many as nine people. The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe comes in three finishes: LS, LT, and Premier. Moving through the three finishes brings more standard features and available options packages, ranging from appearance to power station options. Thanks to a large number of available upgrades, the 2020 Tahoe can be customized to suit different needs, from something more work-oriented to quite luxurious. The rear and four-wheel-drive models are offered, including the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, GMC Yukon, and Toyota Sequoia.

Chevrolet Tahoe 2020 LT
The full-size 2020 Tahoe is a strong candidate for buyers who need a large SUV to tow or transport many people with minimum fuss. The Tahoe has 51.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, though it drops to just 15.3 cubic feet when the third row is up.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Chevy SUV
The Tahoe is also loaded with technical features, such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hotspot, up to seven USB ports and six power points. As far as safety features are concerned, forward collision warning and the low-speed automatic emergency brakes are included on LT and Premier finishes.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Features
Features like engine shutdown, three-zone remote climate control, and front seats make it more than just a large work van. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also here, and the available Enhanced Driver Alert package adds a range of useful driver tools. The LT trim provides leather upholstery and other luxury features inside, but the luxury package further enhances the LT and adds more driver aids. If you want to venture off the highway and off the beaten track, the Z71 off-road package, unique to the LT, is equipped with the Tahoe with off-road suspension and off-road tires and under protection.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior
Inside, the first two rows of the Tahoe are excellent in terms of comfort, space, and access, and even the third row is reasonably accessible. But the back floor is high because of the solid ash suspension that eats up the legroom of the third row. The cargo space is also compromised by the high rear floor to the point where larger or heavier objects may need a helping hand. Fortunately, visibility is quite good in all directions thanks to high windows and relatively thin pillars. The exterior mirrors are simply too small for the Tahoe, but with standard rear parking sensors and a backup camera, itâs not much trouble to park. The climate control always has a handle on the cabin temperature. Outside of temperatures above 100 degrees, the Tahoe or any of its inhabitants did not get annoyed, and although the blower could be a bit loud at full speed, this setting was rarely necessary.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine
Engine choices include a 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter V-8. Both have cylinder deactivation to save fuel when power is not needed. The 5.3-liter V-8 pairs with an automatic six-speed, while the 6.2-liter V-8 gets an automatic 10-speed. The LS is equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine (355 horsepower, 383 pounds of torque) and a six-speed automatic transmission. The Premier trim is at the top of the Tahoe range and is the only way to get the customizable Magnetic Ride Control suspension and even more comforts such as ventilated seats. Itâs also the only way to access the 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp, 460 hp) and the accompanying 10-speed automatic transmission. If you choose the Premier Plus edition, the Tahoe gets dressed to nine and includes the 6.2-liter V8. That powerful V8 is available on other packages, but especially in the 6.2L Performance package, which is new to 2020.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Safety
The Chevrolet Tahoe in 2020 gets mixed results from the federal government but does offer optional active safety features, one leg up from its bakkie siblings. The 2020 Tahoe comes standard with seven airbags, including a central airbag that prevents front-seat occupants from crashing into an accident. Locking brakes and stability control are also standard, while the LT and Premier finishes are standard as active safety features and the 2020 Tahoe LS trim is optional. These include automatic emergency braking, active lane control, automatic headlights and an alert system for the driver. Customizable cruise control is also available on the Premier trim. The Tahoe receives four stars overall from the NHTSA, with benefits and side effects reaching five stars. However, a three-star overload rating keeps the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe from being the fifth overall star.

2021 Chevrolet Suburban Prices: $265 Per Extra Inch of SUV
Need a full-size SUV thatâs as big as or bigger than a Manhattan studio apartment? Great newsâthe 2021 Chevrolet Suburban starts at $52,995 in base LS trim, which is both exactly the same price as the pre-update 2020 Suburban and far cheaper than any New York City apartment. Chevroletâs pricing for the new âBurban (get the full picture here)Â isnât official quite yet. The prices included here were highlighted by researchers at CarsDirect.com, who acquired an early dealer order guide for the 2021 Suburban.
The site also reports that the next-level-up LT trim starts at $57,795, the âsportyâ RST starts at $61,095, the off-road-prepped Z71 at $63,195, and the fancy Premier will run $66,595. Four-wheel drive adds $3,000 to every Suburban price listed here. A trusty 5.3-liter V-8 that offers 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque is standard. A 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel inline-six option is in the works, but you canât have that now and will have to wait it out for the price. All powertrains are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
But wait, thereâs more! If you are looking for a top-shelf people and stuff hauler with a bow-tie badge, the 2021 Chevy Suburban High Country starts at $76,595. It trades the 5.3-liter used elsewhere in the lineup for a standard 6.2-liter V-8 thatâs good for 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. As with the smaller, also redesigned Tahoe (the Suburbanâs shorter-wheelbase sibling), the Suburbanâs pricing is essentially the same as before. Also as with the Tahoe, the Suburbanâs MSRPs place it nearly in luxury vehicle territory, at least on the high end of the lineupâeven though itâs larger than similarly priced SUVs such as Mercedes-Benzâs GLS-Class and BMWâs X7.
Like the smaller Tahoe, the 2021 Suburban receives a thorough update that includes an independent multilink rear suspension, a longer wheelbase, and most importantlyâmore room for passengers. The Suburban increases by 5.8 cubic feet to 181.9 cubes for a roomier ride. The cargo space behind the third-row seats grows 1.8 cubic feet to a total of 41.1 cubes for all your loot.
Inside, all trims get a standard 10-inch infotainment screen and twin 12.6-inch media displays are available for the massive rear seats to keep the kids happy. If you like what you see, Chevy is discounting the 2020 models now or you can wait for a shiny new 2021 model to arrive this summer. Either way, weâll be updating this page in the future with final prices when Chevrolet reveals them officially.

2019 Dodge Durango Pursuit: Testing Dodgeâs V-8 Police SUV
Letâs cut to the chase: No, people around you donât automatically slow down and drive like saints when youâre driving a cop car. Youâd be forgiven for thinking so, because letâs be honest: Every one of us does exactly that when we see a cop. But seeing them is the key, and most people donât.
You can certainly argue the 2019 Dodge Durango Pursuit demonstration vehicle I was driving is subtle for a police car, and it doesnât actually say policeâ anywhere on it. But donât take it from me; take it from a California Highway Patrol officer.
Read about the new 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility here
âNo,â he said with a laugh when I asked if he thought the then-new Ford Explorerâbased Police Interceptors CHP had just bought would allow him to catch more speeders. âI can park on the side of I-5 in broad daylight in one of our old Crown Vics with the big, giant globe lights on the roof, and people will blow right by me at 90 mph without seeing me.â
Dodge only lent us the Durango Pursuit for a week, but it was more than enough time to drive his point home. I saw it all: People running stop signs right in front of me, people speeding and weaving dangerously through traffic, people on their phones wandering within their lanes like drunks, even a woman reading an iPad as she drove in stop-and-go traffic directly behind me.
My favorites were the two speeding BMWs, about 10 minutes apart. I always sort of assumed, or maybe âhopedâ is a better word, that people who weave through traffic on the freeway at 90 mph are paying extra close attention so they donât kill someone or end up in prison. Wrong. I was already cruising above the speed limit on I-10, and both came flying up on me fast. The first was in another lane, but the second flew up on my bumper, tailgated me with extreme prejudice, then cranked it over two lanes and floored it. Both realized it was a cop car just as they were passing me, and both slammed on the brakes and tried to hide by changing lanes and getting behind other vehicles. Sorry guys, but if I had been a real cop, it was way too late to disappear.
The Durango Pursuit has an intimidating presence. Part of that is the more aggressive front fascia on 2019 models, guarded by tusk-like push bars. If weâre honest, it oversells the vehicleâs performance a tad. See, modern police vehicles donât typically get special engines (the Ford Police Interceptorânee Explorerâbeing the notable exception). Under the hood of this angry-looking Durango, the 5.7-liter pushrod V-8 develops the same 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque as a civilian Durango. With more and more departments actively discouraging high-speed pursuits due to the risk involved to the officers, public, and suspect, itâs more than enough.
Armed with an eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive (with an honest-to-goodness two-speed transfer case), the Pursuit hits 60 mph from its hiding spot behind the billboard in 6.5 seconds and runs a 14.9-second quarter mile at 93.2 mph.
For context, thatâs almost identical to the performance of a civilian 2018 Durango 4 R/T AWD V-8 we tested (this one trapped traveling 0.2 mph quicker). For more context, a 2018 Toyota Camry V-6 hits 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and will do a 14.3-second quarter mile at 99.6 mph. Before you consider running from the cops, however, you should keep in mind that no matter how fast your car is, you canât outrun the copsâ radio. We strongly recommend against testing that axiom.
The Pursuitâs performance is actually impressive in a way, because itâs been outfitted with all those lights and sirens and whatnot. Despite that, this Pursuit weighed in at 5,351 pounds, about 80 pounds lighter than that civilian Durango we tested. Because the Pursuit starts life as a base trim level, itâs got cloth seats, the smallest infotainment screen available, and a very short list of options, all of which save weight. On top of that, Dodge removes the third-row seat and uses the hole it leaves to mount all the electronic hardware for the lights, siren, two-way radio, etc. Of course, this demonstration vehicle is not fully kitted out. Thereâs no laptop or two-way radio installed, no radar, no gun rack, no rear seat partition, and none of the loose gear cops carry in their cars like flares and such. A fully dressed vehicle with a fully dressed officer aboard is likely to come in a bit heavier than the civilian model, which may affect performance depending on how much heavier it actually ends up being.
Even factoring in equipment weight, you wonât need to worry about the braking. Although modern cop cars donât really get âcop enginesâ anymore, they do still get âcop brakesâ and âcop suspension.â Even with tires that arenât anything special (and only speed-rated to 118 mph, officers), the Durango Pursuit stopped from 60 mph in 122 feet, 12 feet better than Dodge advertises and 5 feet better than the civilian model. More important, itâll do it over and over thanks to Pursuit-only heavy-duty brakes and new cooling ducts integrated into the 2019 fascia. Our instrumented testing is not kind to brakes, especially not those on 5,000-plus-pound vehicles; and although the Pursuitâs got quite stinky, they never faded.
âCop suspensionâ in this case means load-leveling Nivomat shocks and a âperformance-tunedâ suspension setup. In actuality, it handles exactly the same as the civilian model. In numbers, the Pursuit pulls 0.79 average g on a skidpad and runs a 27.5-second lap on our figure eight at 0.63 average g. The civilian Durango managed 0.80 g on the skidpad and a 27.4-second lap at 0.64 g, statistically equal.
In terms of driving dynamics, you wonât notice the difference. There hasnât been enough weight added or the weight balance hasnât been affected enough to make the Pursuit drive any differently than a fresh-off-the-lot consumer model. It defaults to rear-drive to save gas and is already among the best-driving vehicles in its class, with good body control and a pleasant ride. Throw it into corners like youâre filming a chase scene, and the rear end will rotate just a little before the stability control, which can be muted but not defeated, steps in. Then itâs just midcorner understeer followed by decent corner exit as the front axle starts pulling its weight. At the end of the day, itâs still a 5,000-plus-pound SUVââperformance-tunedâ suspension be damnedâbut itâll also drive circles around the Chevy Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle your department bought.
I mentioned saving gas, and for the fleet managers in the audience, Iâll bring it up again. The V-8 Durango Pursuit is rated at all of 14/22 mpg city/highway, so check your departmentâs budget and make sure itâs well funded. If you can live with âonlyâ 293 hp and 260 lb-ft, the also all-wheel-drive 3.6-liter V-6 is rated at a city-council-budget-committee-friendlier 18/25 mpg city/highway. The six-cylinder Durango Pursuit starts at $36,476, with our V-8 loaner coming in at $39,142.
Thereâs really only one other area in which the Durango Pursuit needs improvement, and thatâs the cupholders. The drop-in plastic unit this steel center console comes with just doesnât cut it, good only for holding fast-food to-go cups.

This is an affront to the law enforcement community. Iâm starting a hashtag campaign. #getcopsbettercupholders

Road Tests: 2020 Hyundai Palisade
Vital Statistics
Engine: 3.8 liter
Horsepower: 291
Torque: 262 lb-ft.
EPA: 19 mpg city / 26 mpg highway,
Energy Impact: 15.0 barrels of oil/yr
CO2 Emissions: 6.7 tons/yr
If youâre looking for a big Hyundai SUV for the family and canât keep track of whether the latest Sante Fe has 3-row seating or not; Hyundai has finally cleared things up! You want the new Palisade, the biggest Hyundai ute yet. Indeed, just like it sounds, it offers truly palatial space for up to 8. So letâs see what else it has to offer.
The name Palisade is defined as a type of fence with pointed stakes for protection and defense. So, perhaps with the 2020 Palisade, Hyundai is projecting their 3-row, luxury minded SUV as their best line of defense against the endless barrage of big crossovers these days, and a familyâs best protection from the outside world! Or, maybe, they just thought the name sounded cool!
Though it does truly look like they want to protect you, by making just about every safety system standard; including Forward and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance.Â
Up close and personal, the Palisade is not as big as it appeared when first debuted on the auto show stand; tall for sure, but length is actually just shy of rival Honda Pilot. And, the 114.2-inch wheelbase is the same as the Nissan Pathfinder.Â
For better or worse, looks are what can often make or break a vehicle sale. Needless to say Hyundai is not sneaking around. The Palisade wears a huge face that demands respect. Fender extensions, beefy looking rockers, and a high beltline all hope to portray an air of ruggedness; while signature LED lighting, a panoramic glass roof, and this Limitedâs 20-inch wheels ensure you donât miss the designâs luxury.Â
The Palisade is of course kin to Kiaâs Telluride; though while the Kia is assembled in Georgia, the Palisade is imported from South Korea. Â
They share the same naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter V6 engine partially running on the Atkinson Cycle, and outputting an identical 291-horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque.Â
The transmission is an 8-speed automatic; sending power to the front wheels, or to all four if Hyundaiâs HTRAC all-wheel-drive system is added. Shift-by-wire does away with the traditional shifter and cleans up the console; leaving a row of small selector buttons, and a transmission thatâs slow to respond to them.Â
While HTRAC can certainly handle some light off-roading situations with ease; it also comes with a rear-biased Sport mode to improve on-road handling, as well as a Snow mode for optimized winter traction.Â
Seating for eight is standard, though 2nd row Captainâs Chairs come with Limited trim. 2nd row space is enormous, and comfort level high. One-Touch folding of the 2nd row allows for easy entry into 3rd; where youâll find adequate space for adults in a pinch, but also hard cushions.
Thereâs more cargo space than a Chevy Tahoe behind the 3rd row, 18.0 cubic-ft.; but thatâs 3.0 cubic-ft. less than the Telluride, though it can be power-folded here, a feature not available on the Kia. With the middle row down, thereâs 45.8 cubic-ft.; maxing out at 86.4 with all seats folded.Â
Canât fit it inside? Well, you can tow it behind you with a 5,000 lb limit.Â
Being a Hyundai flagship model, and one aimed at families, means a tech quotient as high as for comfort.Â
Well, if your definition of high-tech is a 10-inch touchscreen for navigation and the like, wireless phone charging, and seven USB ports; then you will be happy.Â
While there are some similarities, the overall theme of the interior, and dash in particular, are quite different than the Telluride. In the Palisade, there seems to be a clear Mercedes-Benz influence. Â
It looks quite luxurious, even if some things feel and respond more Asian than Germanic.Â
Our first drives were around the state of Idaho where we found the Palisade to be quite maneuverable and easy to handle. Similar to the Telluride, it drives much smaller than it is, aided by great visibility all around.Â
It also responds appropriately quick and powerful out of turns; with good amounts of feel from the light steering, to help you find your way through them smoothly and safely.Â
Government Fuel Economy Ratings are good for a big rig; 19-City, 26-Highway, and 22-Combined with 2-wheel drive; 19-City, 24-Highway, and 21-Combined with all-wheel drive. That rates only slightly below all vehicles as to Energy Impact Score; at 15.0-barrels of yearly oil consumption, with 6.7- tons of CO2 emissions.Â
Pricing starts at just $32,595, mid-level SEL is not much more, at $34,545; but itâs a big step up from there to Limited, which starts at $45,745. All-wheel-drive is a $1,700 option for all trims.Â
So, what else is Hyundai trying so hard to protect with this 2020 Hyundai Palisade? Perhaps itâs their secret formula for delivering an amazing amount of luxury, practicality, and comfort in a highly desirable package that remains quite attainable. Thatâs certainly something worth defending and the Palisade easily lives up to its name.Â
