WhatsApp adds new privacy features to protect ‘last seen’, ‘online’ status
Tumblr media
WhatsApp Privacy Policy: According to a report by online blog WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has added new privacy features that change who can see a user’s ‘last seen’ and ‘online’ status. The new changes will prevent unknown contacts, whom WhatsApp users have never had a conversation with, from seeing their ‘last seen’ or ‘online’ status.
WhatsApp new privacy features
WABetaInfo received an email from WhatsApp customer support, confirming the new changes. The email states that WhatsApp made these privacy changes to improve the privacy and security of their users. They also said that this will not change anything for a user’s friends, family, and businesses which they know or have previously messaged.
The new privacy features are not available to toggle in the settings, but have come into effect automatically.
The report says that WhatsApp could have seen the need to make this change as there are many apps on the App Store and Play Store which log the ‘last seen’ or ‘online’ status of a user, thus enabling unknown contacts to track their online activity. This will now no longer be possible.

WhatsApp share menu revamp
An earlier report had indicated that WhatsApp may be working on a revamp of their share menu, which will let users edit recipients before they send out media. Users can add other recipients, even members from another group, while sending an image, video, audio, or document. This functionality will be similar to the share menu seen on apps like Instagram and Twitter.
The feature is still in development, and thus could be altered before seeing eventual release on iOS or Android smartphones. It may be available to a select few WhatsApp beta users.

According to reports, WhatsApp will make agreeing to its terms of service optional
Ever since WhatsApp made changes to its privacy policy, many people have been advocating for it. This is because, at some point, users who do not accept the changes will find that their use of the app will be restricted and they will even lose access to some features. But now according to reports, Whatsapp will make agreeing to its terms of service optional soon.
However, according to a new report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp seems to be changing. The report claims that WhatsApp could soon agree to these optional terms of service. This means that there is no need if you have not agreed to the new terms of use.
However, if you are trying to talk to a business account, you must read and accept these terms. That means if you only use WhatsApp for personal use and never talk to a business account, it won’t have any impact on you. But if you plan to talk to a business account, you have no choice.
In defense of WhatsApp, the issues and controversies surrounding the change will primarily affect chats with business accounts, not personal accounts. Therefore, it makes sense to agree if you want to communicate with the company. However, the way companies deal with the situation could be better and clearer than what they have been trying to do in recent months.

WhatsApp puts ‘take it or leave it’ privacy policy on hold in India: Timeline of events surrounding the controversial update

WhatsApp: A hotbed for scammers
Criminals are taking advantage of longstanding global supply chain and supply chain problems to lure victims into identity theft scams, experts warn. But now whatsapp has considered to become a hotbed for scammers. A fraudulent campaign has launched that took advantage of recent changes in WhatsApp’s privacy policy. The policy to share information with Facebook. Users have invited to chat with “beautiful strangers” on WhatsApp. But when they clicked on the link, they have instead redirected to a fake Facebook login page where their login details have stolen.
A report from Kaspersky calls on the public to be vigilant when opening and interacting with messages. Those messages suspected of being sent by delivery companies – especially when shopping online.
But the company is also reporting a growing number of scams using WhatsApp to scam users without money. As well as others running fake apps and online love sites.
Shipping Scam
Kaspersky said there had been a significant spike in fraud, capitalizing on the tremendous growth in online offerings fueled by the pandemic.
In increasingly localized campaigns, criminals send invoices in multiple languages and demand payment to cover import or shipping duties. However, if you click on the link or attachment, the victim will take to a fake website where their banking or card details have stolen.
Criminals have also reportedly launched a website that claims to offer a lottery program. So they can buy packages that recipients can’t get. Such websites offering mysterious packages accept offers. But victims find that even if they “win” the prize, it will never arrive.
Web-Content researchers at Kaspersky report that attackers are taking advantage of new trends and diversions to steal money and identity data. Tatiana Shterbakova says attackers are taking advantage of increased messenger usage and email delivery issues during pandemics. All the messaging apps like email, messenger, whatsapp etc are all hotbed for scammers.
Due to the fact that they play on human emotions, spam and phishing tactics are still among the most efficient means of launching successful attacks. The best thing users can do is be careful of unexpected emails. And when they click on attachments or be very careful with email link – go directly to the site.”
As always, Kaspersky recommends that you always check all links in messages or emails before clicking on them. And that you have a complete security solution to ensure you are protected against the latest threats.
